Gumby's Pizza - Columbia, MO I was working in Columbia last week when a few coworkers suggested we stop by Gumby's Pizza for lunch. Located downtown near the Mizzou campus, Gumby's is a well-known local spot that's popular with students and residents alike. As with most downtown areas, parking can be a bit of a challenge, so plan accordingly. At first glance, the restaurant looks small from the outside, but once you step inside, you'll find it surprisingly spacious. When you walk in, you're greeted by specials posted throughout the entrance area. We arrived right around noon and, to our surprise, we were the only group dining at that time. Orders are placed at the counter, where we were helped by a woman who was absolutely fantastic--friendly, patient, and accommodating, especially considering that several people in our group were visiting for the first time. After ordering, you can choose to sit at a booth, high-top table, or at the bar. The atmosphere is casual and inviting, with TVs throughout, a music machine, and even a pool table for entertainment. Since I'm currently following a fasting diet and skip breakfast and lunch, I ordered my meal to go so I could enjoy it for dinner. Having had plenty of pizza the night before at Shakespeare's, I decided to switch things up. I went with a pound of boneless wings--half buffalo, half mango habanero--and added a side of beef toasted ravioli. One of our local coworkers also ordered the XL cheese bread for the table, and I can confidently say, based on both this visit and past experiences, it's easily in my top three for cheese bread anywhere. Everyone in our group was happy with their food, from the pizzas to the other menu items. Overall, Gumby's is a spot I'll continue to visit whenever I'm in Columbia. Great service, solid food, and a laid-back vibe make it a go-to for a casual meal downtown. read more

I have to agree with, Rylee. Drunk and Sober me would rate this pizza totally different. Drunk would be a good solid 4+ and sober me would say it's just an average 3. However, I totally did enjoy my small sausage and jalapeno pizza after a night of bar hopping in COMO. I ordered at the counter and took my deliciousness back to my hotel room to enjoy. The counterperson was friendly and professional. There were several of us ordering and waiting for carry-out. She totally kept the line moving and even offered glasses of water for us to enjoy while waiting. My wait was actually a very short time. The set-up behind the counter was easy to view, so I got to watch them make my pizza. When mine came out of the oven, I knew it was mine. There were plenty of topping and the mozzarella cheese was well melted and even had a golden color to it. Is Gumby's the "best" pizza? No, but it is head and shoulders above a national chain pizzeria that is just a few doors down. So, I recommend them over Papa. read more

The perfect setting for a pizza place on a college town.The food was great. The person taking orders was courteous. They could have cleaned the empty tables more especially since seating is limited. Just how I remember it! Took a pitstop because I was starving on the road. Called ahead and the order was placed! They didn't ask for a name but I ordered a half and half pokey stick/pepperoni pizza. It's the only way to do it! Rolled in about 20 minutes later and it was done as soon as i got there. Seating was empty and it looks like they mostly get carryout orders. The environment doesn't look very kept up but the kitchen was clean. The pizza was hot and tasted exactly as I remember it from back in the day. I drove to Columbia for Gumby's! It seems people aren't too excited by Gumby's, but this pizza - AND THE POKIE STICKS - are life in college towns! The pizza wasn't as great as i remember it, but it was still itching a scratch i hadn't thought i had. We opted for delivery service tonight and the pizza was delivered before it's scheduled time. We really wanted to love this pizza BUT, it wasn't baked long enough. The dough was gummy. Gumby's holds a special place in my heart. I am conflicted on how to rate this place because drunk me would give Gumby's 5 stars, whereas sober me would only give it 3 (so I settled for 4 stars). Gumby's has been my go-to late night drunk food in Columbia in the most recent years. Mostly because it's conveniently located on the edge of Broadway in downtown Como. My favorite things to order are the Stoner Pie and the Pokey Sticks. Service has always been fast and friendly and delivery is SO convenient!! The food tastes good, but their integrity is questionable. Placed an order today, the pizza was supposed to be a large and the pokie stix a medium. Both were the same size. Oh, hey Gumby's. Gumby's is a place my friends and I frequented after a night of drinking. Since they're open until 2 a.m. on weeknights and 3 a.m. Thursday-Saturday, it's a good place to go to hang out and get greasy food after midnight. The pizza is just pizza. It's not really great or bad, it's just warm and crave-able late at night. The staff at Gumby's is pretty laid back, and with the pool tables, air hockey tables, TVs, and the late night crowd it can really be a good place to be. I went into Gumby's hoping to try a slice of the local flavor. The dude behind the counter tells me I'm in the wrong place - they don't serve slices. So as I'm considering buying a whole pizza, he goes on to tell me that he thinks the pizza sucks and starts giving me suggestions of other places to go. So. I left. I actually prefer Gumbys pizza over Shakesperes. Everytime I go to Shakesperes, its over crowded, overpriced and takes forever to get the food. That being said, these two places are two very different types of pizza. Gumbys is the delicious cheesy pizza with just enough grease on it that you craze it. I recommend the Hawaiian BBQ pizza. I had never been to Gumby's (or had even heard of it!), but when we were passing through Columbia on the way back to St. Louis from Kansas City, my boyfriend insisted that we stop by. We ordered half spinach and green pepper pizza and half Pokey sticks (cheese sticks). It was soooo yummy! The pizza dough is unlike any other I e ever tried. It's very very soft and doughy. I can see where others might not like that, but I love it! The place is obviously catered to nearby college students. Makes me miss my old days at school! *sniff* If I ever find myself in Columbia again, Gumby's will be a sure stop. read more
