Called the store and in the middle of a weekday no one picked up. I then called one of their other stores to see if they had the products I was looking for at the first store and they said they should have them so I went to the west side store. At the west side store they didn't have the products I needed and the ones they did have were drenched in dust and priced about 40 percent higher than competitors. There's no lighting in part of the store and the counters at the front looked like a salvation army with their disorganization. In short, they don't answer the phone, the people across the company don't know what inventory they have and feed you disinformation and their store was dirty and overpriced compared even to the chain stores. Walked in a few weeks back looking for new skates and a half shield. First pair of skates they brought out was a few years old - looking to unload old stock on an unsuspecting customer. I get it - but still disappointing. Next 3 pairs were low end options I tried because the sales lady was nice enough to pull them. I asked to try two specific well rated skates (Bauer Supreme's, Vapor 2X)but was told they didn't carry them in my size (11's) and if I wanted them the manager would need to order direct from Bauer and have me pay up front. No thanks. Went to Pure Hockey a few days later. They had a far better selection and I felt like I was talking to people who knew their stuff. Love you, Gunzo's. This has been my regular sharpening spot since I moved to Chicago. There's enough free street parking around that I'm usually right out front, and at worst like a block away. Bought a pair of skates here two summers ago. When you do this, they slap a Gunzo's sticker on the bottom and you get $2 off sharpenings. Playing on multiple teams year round, this adds up fast! All employees I've worked with are helpful and knowledgeable. If they don't have stuff at this location, it usually only takes a few days for them to get it from one of the others and they'll hold it for you. All told - hands down the best and most convenient hockey option if you live in the city. read more

Friendly, helpful staff. Great prices. Great location. And they actually know how to sharpen both forward and goalie skates. This is less of a review and more pure nostalgia. . . It was around 1986, I was in 5th grade and it was well before Starter bought the rights to produce every single piece of sports team athletic-wear and, if memory serves, Gunzo's did all the coats and jerseys for the Blackhawks players..... My dad took me there for my Christmas gift - my very own Chicago Blackhawks team jacket. I got the version the managers wore back then in white with the big tomahawks on the shoulders. It was my pride and joy that year and still is when I bust it out. Yep...I still have that coat. It's pretty beat to hell since it's white and over 25 years old but it has the little Gunzo's tag on the pocket and is all the original everything. I really cherish it. I remember going with my dad to their store and picking out what I wanted and then going and picking it up. I can still fit in it (we bought it really big) and even in it's beat up state, it still gets compliments. It's hard to find stuff with the big tomahawk patches. Everything has those lame tiny ones nowadays. Anyway.... it's nice to see the name Gunzo's on Yelp. It brought a ton of memories back. These guys were the real deal. I imagine they still are and now that I live in their 'hood, it might be time for a trip down memory lane. :) read more

I needed my ice skates sharpened at last minute. I visited Gunzo's out of mere convenience and I was not disappointed! The tech there was SUPER friendly and helpful when sharpening my skates. I had some questions and he happily answered them without judgement or hesitation. We talked about hollow and how much to sharpen to since I hadn't skated in a while. He was very helpful! Such a great experience, everyone there was so nice and new what they were talking about. I was in to get a helmet, navy blue and some gloves and it's like they had super powers, they knew exactly what I needed and I still have the helmet to this day. I am an amateur skater (I've done it once) but I wanted to get some skates so I could get better this season. I went to Dick's but they only had one pair in my size (shoe: US 13). They were also not very well informed or customer friendly. I came here and was so glad I did! Kevin was really friendly and made me feel very comfortable even though I am a total noob. He told me about how they heat the skates so you can mold them a bit to your feet if they don't fit perfectly. They also sharpen them for you. Shop small, ditch the big box and come here! read more

For one hot minute I was considering gearing up at a general sports store and then common sense overcame me. If you're going to play ice hockey, you need to visit a place like Gunzo's and not "guess" and buy things off the shelf at Sports Authority. In the past week I have been there three times and in that time have bought: new skates, elbow pads, a helmet, a stick and a couple of jerseys (plus a couple of Hawks shirts from their very impressive collection of Hawks merchandise). The salespeople were knowledgable and no-pressure, they were spot-on in their recommendations for what skate I should buy and what helmet (and in neither case not the most expensive one)--I love everything I have purchased there and they can consider me a customer for life. I go back in the next week to complete the gear: shoulder pads, pants and shin guards. Of course I'm going to Gunzo's, because I know they'll steer me in the right direction. Great, great place and best I can tell the only proper hockey place in downtown Chicago. Also, if they don't have it in stock they will check with one of their other stores. Highest rating. BTW street parking was pretty easy on a Saturday afternoon. Not sure on the weekdays, but it appeared if you parked off Madison (one of the side streets) just south of there, there were plenty of spots. UPDATE: went back there to buy the rest of my gear and it was all a perfect fit. Have been playing ever since. Love my (now broken in) skates, my gear, everything. I was on my way to a game at Johnny's and stopped to get my goalie skates sharped. I had noticed that the zip tie that holds my toe hook had broken off and asked the person sharping them if they had any zip ties I could buy. He pulled out a container of them to give me one. The manager noticed him doing this and said we can't give away zip ties. I mentioned that I did not mind paying for it. I just need one for the game. He said we also don't sell them. With moving to the city I was excited to have a hockey shop nearby but unfortunately due to the lack of customer service will go back to buying online. read more

I called the W Madison St store for skate sharpening. I was told exactly to pay $9. I went in the store the same day. The clerk there charged me $15 without explanation. I called two days later to ask for explanation. I was told again the price should be $9 without any other information. I went in the same day again for another pair of skates. I was charged again for $15. The clerk then explained that for any new skates not purchased from the store, the price for sharpening is $15, and every time later is $9. I recently decided I wanted to learn how to play hockey and with my first group lesson coming up, I knew I needed a lot of things and fast. I went to Gunzo's and Julian could not have been more helpful. He took me from section to section of the store and gave me recommendations on each piece of equipment I should buy. He spent a ton of time making sure my skates fit perfectly and also explained the pros and cons of each set of gear I was considering. The Bears game was going on yet he was more focused on giving me the best customer service which was pretty great. I ended up with everything I needed (selection was surprisingly pretty deep even for a small store). Plus at the end, they have this machine that heats and pressurizes your skates while you have them on to reduce the break in time. I don't always write Yelp reviews but when I do, it's for Gunzo's. I know I'll be back whenever I need anything. read more

There's is a substantial amount of apparel in this little store and the guys are cool. Hubby & I were looking for Crawford jerseys online, but were all sold out of our sizes so we stopped in here. They didn't have my hubby's size, but said they could get one done in 30 minutes. The jersey was done when we came back & I ended up buying another t-shirt for my nephew. I was extremely impressed today as I took my 2 year old daughter to get her ice skates sharpen and a new helmet. I wish I knew the employees name but the man working there was so friendly with my daughter and made her feel very comfortable. She was crying I think she got little scared of all the people. He approached her very politely and friendly. He made her feel comfortable and excited about her helmet. It just surprised me how good he was with such a young child, I did not expect that from a hockey pro shop. :) read more

I stopped by Gunzo's with my ten year old to have his skates sharpened. We decided to look at a few sticks and skates located in the rear of the store. I'm a person of color and didn't appreciate the odd descent of two stores clerks to keep an eye on us. One seemed to reshuffle a set of already stacked hockey sticks, while the other readjusted a pair of display skates - made me feel very uncomfortable.
