Grandson needed skates - 2.5 wide CCMs - not an easy size to find. Pure hockey measured him and searched their inventory and told me to try buying them online and bring them back for heat fitting and sharpening. Mike took care of us and was super! I had bought brand new skates from the Schaumburg location and during the heat molding process the associate at that location had me walking on them while they were extremely warm still, so the holders ended up bending. The associate told me that was how they came... I ended up skating on the skates and immediately noticed the mistake so I reached out to a few of my equipment buddies who had me come down to he Downers Grove store as they also were the only store that had my size in stock and I explained the situation to Vito one of the managers on site and he had me in and out the door with brand new skates, properly heat molded within half an hour. He was very knowledgeable and professional. The store itself was much more busier but I didn't see any customer wait more than 2-3 minutes without being helped with their needs (as hockey equipment clearly takes some time per person this was impressive). I highly recommend as a Hockey Director and Coach for any parent, player and or coach to come in and work with Vince, Vito and the rest of the staff!!! read more

It is sad these days to think that misogyny is alive and well in a hockey specialty store in Chicago. We brought my adult daughter into the store from the Northshore. It was an hour drive due to the limited choice in the Chicagoland area. She is here from out of country to buy goalie pads. She is an elite level player, playing and coaching at the international level. It is pathetic that our service experience generally at Pure Hockey was pretty poor despite spending over 3 grand. My rating is because of the services, sales & staff. You can get the skates sharpened here on a Friday. The staff was approachable & knowledgeable depending on who you ask. There may not be gloves for $50- but we got what we came for. The prices are a little high but I guess I should have knew what to expect when buying Hockey equipment. read more

I received awesome service from Mitch at the Elmhurst store. He fit me in the perfect Bauer skate for my foot. I had some odd rubbing inside the boot early on. I added Superfeet, which eliminated the problem. I visited the Downers location close to work and they were able to punch a spot out on the boot. The skates are super comfortable. Top hockey destination for Hockey Shopping! Prices are the only thing keeping me from giving them a 5. Problem is,price is dictated by manufacturers & corporate so its not stores fault. The store? It has a great selection, they have good hours, they have a decent prices for skate sharpening & quality people to do it. My son is a goalie. When I need goalie equipment, goalie advice or anything I see Chris Hart , Asst Mgr & goalie specialist! Chris has helped my family countless times! Always patient, helpful, and informative . One time, he got equipment on his day off from a store far away & delivered to a rink where my son was playing just to take care of his customers! This guy is top shelf!! One of the best hockey stores we have visited. My daughter is a goalie and needed new equipment for college. We worked with their goalie specialist, Alex, who couldn't have been more knowledgeable, helpful and patient. We drove 3.5 hrs from Indy to get some new skate and Alex and Sean made it more than worth it! Alex scanned my feet, talked to me about issues I was having with my old skates, listened to my wants and needs for a new pair, then gave me a few solid pairs that meet my needs at different price points. Sean took the time to talk to me about a punch out for my old skates to make them much more comfortable. These guys made all the difference. I haven't been able to skate without searing pain for over a year, but today, I'm hitting the ice. And thank you guys. Sorry about the tears of joy, but you really did give me hockey back. read more

I just stopped in here again today to have both pairs of my skates sharpened and decided to look around as they had them on the table. Big mistake. Because now it's not a matter of IF you're going to spend more money than you thought, but instead, how much. After all, it's been about 15 years since I've strapped on the pads and after gazing around at all of the latest goalie gear, I discover that nothing is as it used to be anymore. I shouldn't be surprised, because it's only natural that since the game itself has changed so much over time, the equipment will have to as well. As I'm listening to the skate sharpener grind in the background, I ask an associate (Ryan) in the Goaltender department what the best way to determine my leg pad size was since I'd never had it officially done before. Luckily, he's a netminder too and about the same size as myself, so he was quick to give me an answer. "33 or 34, depending on your style". (Wow... I was looking at 32s) I thanked him and told him I was just starting to explore the idea of getting back into the nets and wasn't ready to buy right away. That didn't seem to matter one bit to him. It became obvious that he was much more interested in making sure I left the store more knowledgeable about the equipment and science behind it (yes, I said science) than when I came in and spent over a half an hour with me to insure that. I would have been there longer, but I was running a bit late and so I actually had to cut him off with a hand shake and a "Thanks a lot, buddy! I really appreciate your time." And I did. The selection is good. Prices are a bit high. You will find some decent stuff on sale when they're trying to thin out their stock. I give this place 2 stars though because the last 2 times I've taken my skates there to get sharpened, they've botched it. I had to take it to Gunzo's to get redone the first time. Decided to give TH another shot last week, and the edge was COMPLETELY removed from both of my skates. My $400 skates felt like the rentals at Millenium Park.... I lost my edge numerous times just trying to do a simple turn and went crashing into the boards...very dangerous. The ref got a laugh at least... I will not be getting my skates sharpened there again. Also, their cloth tape is garbage. Needs to be replaced after each use. read more

Most of staff there are professional, but try to avoid using a guy named Sean, he has a ponytail, with glasses, we used him three times, every time had issues from what he served. He picked up wrong skates at first time, 2nd time when we went to exchange a shin pad he told us there is no warranty for the new one, I asked him if I can talk up the store manager, instead of calling the manager, he turned a circle came back said there is warranty. The 3rd time is sharpening, he did really bad sharpening. I tried to avoid using him, but looks like he likes to walk to me and take care my business every time when I walked into that store. read more

I decided to start playing hockey again, and I needed some new equpiment because I no longer fit into my high school gear. With my shopping list in hand, I stopped on by the store. Once one of the employees was free, he offered to help me out - which involved getting a helmet down from the shelf, showing me the different pads and explaining the differences to help find the right size and protection. Upon checking out, I was informed of all the membership/discount options that were available to me. Just left the store and we had such a great experience I had to write a review right away. My husband and I know nothing about hockey but our 3-year-old son is obsessed so we signed him up for lessons at a local rink and stopped in at Pure Hockey to get skates, a stick and a couple of other things. A young man named Andy helped us out right away. I can honestly say I've never had a better customer experience in any store ever. He was so sweet and patient with my son and he took his time walking my husband and I through everything we needed to know about everything. He wasn't pushy at all, just extremely helpful, thoughtful, patient and so kind. Our son had so much fun talking with Andy, when we left the store he said he wanted to work at the hockey store when he grows up! Stopped in to buy some inline skates. Tim helped us. We had my 2 year old son who loves hockey. He got him a little stick and ball and little net to play with. He was great with checking for sizes for me and finding me the right skate. He continued to play with my son while I was deciding. It was between bauers and missions. I chose the missions. The tag on the skate had them on sale for 149.00. This is where it goes bad and I am giving 3 stars. I asked Tim to give me a few minutes to decide. He went to put the other skates back that he got out for me. I go up to the register, another kid is up there, he scans the box and says that will be 219.00. I say no, the tag on the skate said 149.00. He looks confused, looks at the computer, while he is doing that i see Tim and wave him over. Ask him what the tag says and he said 149.00. The other kid goes no they are 199.00. Tim says look online, turns out they were 199 on the website as well. Tim goes well maybe that was the junior price. They didn't even have junior skates in the u line section...... So another guy came up, he and Tim walk over by the inline skates while me and my wife and my son stand there awkwardly with this other kid. I watch Tim and the other guy stand over by the skates talking and laughing....then walk back towards the register [I'm thinking they come and apologize for the mix up or something and offer to work something out] but instead thery just walked through the double doors to go in back. At this point in pretty pissed as they leave us at the register with the one kid who doesn't know what to say. I told him I'm not taking them and we left. Now I know it's not a lot of money but it's the principal and i went in there with a budget in mind. My question is how long has that tag been on those skates....which the one on the shelf with the price tag on it was my size.......have they sold them to other people for that price or are they mis- leading people to only change the price at the register and hope whoever jyst says f-it and buys them anyway. At the end of the day it's false advertising to my face and the fact that all 3 guys working didn't want to try to rectify the situation and instead basically just ignored us and I take it as a BIG F U and they could give two sh*ts less. read more

I love the sharpening that i get when I go to the downers location. As of right now the right handed sticks are slim pickings and only have the high end models. Staff is friendly and knowledgeable on what is offered for the products. People complain about the prices but hey its hockey of course its gonna cost some money. read more

If your kid breaks sticks as much as mine does and they like Bauer sticks go to pure hockey. As we all know hockey sticks come with a 30 day warranty. When you have to send it in to Bauer in the oversize box and pay for shipping it is a real pain. Not at Pure Hockey. If you break your stick within 30 days and take it back to THE STORE, they will exchange it for you on the spot. No more RMA's and mailing and waiting! Love Pure Hockey!! read more

I have been shopping at this hockey store for years. My son is a goalie and as most anyone who would be shopping at this store knows goalie equipment is EXPENSIVE! Usually we go in and are helped in a timely manner and are guided with sizes,fit, and so on. This fall my son had hit a major growth spell and we had to buy a new set of pads, stick, blocker, and glove. Not to mention the odds and ends. An order was placed to ship the glove to the downers location from another store. So after a week I called to check the status. The glove was never even sent! I kept my cool and said ok how soon can u have it they had it over by the next day and no big deal. So a week later his skate blade breaks and we go back to total hockey in a rush and ultimately decide to buy new skates because he is measuring up a half size instead of just getting the blades fixed. After purchasing $350 skated they refused to move his skates up in the line so they could be sharper and said that it was going to be another 45 minutes. So there was no regard to how much money we gave them that day let alone the hundreds of dollars we had spent the weeks ahead of time they were still going to make his skates wait behind all the other skates that were dropped off for a $15 sharpen. We took the new skates over to the pro shop at Canlan and were in and out. We will no longer be purchasing equipment from this location. I will go there and have my son fitted and find the equipment he likes and then order from a different supplier online. I have no desire to give all of my money to a business that has no regard for customer service. read more

I visited this store with a aspiring 7 year old hockey player. Maybe because I am a woman, we were completely ignored. We spend an hour trying on pads and I was constantly trying to get a salespersons attention. Nothing. We finally picked out what we needed and went to the register. We were the only people in line and the guy at the register kept doing some paperwork, just ignoring us. After about 6 minutes of standing there he finally said "oh, do you need something". I was in the area for a hockey tournament and needed a skate stell straightened. The guys at the Total Hockey in Downers Grove were awesome, they not only straightened the steel but showed me how the rivets were falling out and broken. It was a weekend and they don't usually do repair then but they said they make the time to fix the broken rivets. Awesome customer service and a lot of knowledge. read more

Huge selection, average prices. knowledge and professionalism is HUGELY lacking. While looking for a new stick I asked if they had a blade curve chart and I was told "everything we have is out" then I told them what it was and 3 associates got together and said all the info is printed on the sticks ... I gave up and looked online. They have a lot of stuff but your pretty much on your own I'm sure any advice offered will be inaccurate 75% of the time. No personal checks accepted ! read more

I went in there for help on my rollerblades really not expecting they could help but they did. One man both helped fix my rollerblades and replace a part that two different stores could not.
