My SIL, daughter and I picked up sandwiches, drinks and chips and took them to the nearby park overlooking the water. These sandwiches are great but the tuna is not tuna, it's mackerel. So: if you are a quasi-vegetarian and thinking of having either the veggie sandwich (which is terrific) or the tuna, which is actually blended-up mackerel and totally disgusting, have the veggie. The meat-eaters in my family refuse to come here anymore because they say they use the cheapest available meats. I can now confirm...this is true. Whenever I come to harbor springs I rely on Gurney's about 60% of the time for lunch. Gurney's is reliable, quick, fast, and easy. This is the 22nd summer we have patronized Gurney's Bottle Shop for what has always been some of the most delicious sandwiches available anywhere. They were so good I would overlook the fact that they refuse to take credit cards. While occasionally trying some of their other sandwiches, my go-to has always been their tuna salad on whole wheat with a slice of provolone cheese and lettuce. Today's sandwiches were not of the same caliber as in the past. I don't know if they use an outside supplier or make their tuna salad in-house, but the tuna was definitely bland. While very moist, we couldn't really discern any taste of Mayonnaise or other condiment so the source of the moistness was mystifying. The bread here is the real winner and what makes the sandwiches great! The reason for the 3 star review is this place is not only a sandwich place but also a liquor store. The liquor selection is small, and they do not carry a lot of local products. They also mark up there prices a lot, but being downtown harbor it's not surprising. read more
