So i have always wanted to stop here because I love beef jerky and the sign says it's really good. Today because I was solo I decided to stop and support local .. The sign in the window says the entrance is the door in the mural .. duh .. it took me a minute to see the door knob!! We saw several signs advertising it as we were driving from the Grand Canyon to Sedona, and thought we'd stop. Most of the jerky sells for $15; however we bought 3 bags at the special price of 3/$39. We bought some teriyaki and some sweet & spicy and it was fresh, tender, and tasty. (Hopefully our last bag will make it home to my daughter instead of getting eaten before our vacation is over!) The store also sells nuts, and many different kinds of dried fruit, but the prices were a little high on those. There were free samples and the woman who was working there was very friendly. Situated out in the middle of no where lies a tiny shop with honey sticks, jars of olives, dried fruits, flavored pistachios, and a vast variety of the best damn jerky EVER. Passing by this little shack every time we take a road trip to Las Vegas for a weekend of shenanigans, I've always wanted to stop by and explore this business in the middle of the desert. Gus's tends to slip my mind and it's the kind of place you just point at while speeding by with your mouth agape. After a multitude of times where we've blown by, we finally slammed on the brakes and turned into Gus's. Best decision ever. Gus's is a cozy shop with an interesting collection of jarred olives, flavored honey sticks, dried fruit such as pineapple and mango, and jerky from different animals in different marinades. They sell turkey, venison, elk, buffalo, and all sorts of meat jerky. Samples are graciously offered and it's easy to end up walking away with $20-40 worth of product. I haven't tried the olives but the jerky and dried fruit are my staples. Their pistachios are pretty darn tasty too. Let me save y'all a trip: GO TO COSTCO! Seriously, we stopped at the location on the 93 outside Kingman, AZ and really wanted it to live up to all the 5-star reviews we had been seeing. Tried some samples and LOVED the venison jerky, only to find out that it was $10 per OUNCE! (Amazon has the same product at $4-5/oz) As we went through the rest of the shop, it looked like everything was identical to the same dried fruits and jerky you can buy at Costco...so, to be fair, we bought a couple items to compare. Sure enough, the Cowboy Beef jerky and Dried Mango were completely identical to the Costco versions except for one thing: Gus's will charge you 4 times more for a small bag! It even says on the label, "PRODUCED for:"...not made by or manufactured by! So, I'm sorry to say, Gus's Jerky is just jerking around their customers. read more

As a fresh jerky lover, I wanted to give an honest review. This place is getting two stars for taste. It is good jerky but for the price I have had better. In my opinion the price is insane, it's like $10 a gallon if we are comparing it with gas prices!! Looks like there was a recent increase , 3(3oz bag) for $55 is highway robbery. That's my thought on it, you can check it out if you see fit but I feel it's over priced for quantity not quality. I was there for the jerky. She was definitely no social butterfly and made my experience a little awkward, I wont go into details about why... so let's get to the Jerky!! The jerky was a bit on the pricier side but I never mind paying for some good jerky. They had three flavored beef packages: sweet & spicy, teriyaki, and classic peppered. They also had Bison and some other meats that I don't remember exactly but I think it was dragon and dinosaur meat, or something like that. I could tell that the quality of the jerky was going to be good by the feel of the bag and sure enough it was AMAZING! I was super excited when I found out there was a jerky place on the way home from Vegas. We stopped off and I was super excited. Unfortunately, I was a little disappointed when I found out they were out of venison and elk. Womp womp sad day. I was left with beef or pork jerky. I ended up getting teriyaki beef, hot brisket, and bbq pork. The more you buy from here the more you save so naturally I bought more. All three were super moist, thin cut, and the jerky was as tender as jerky can be. My favorite of the three was the teriyaki. I felt like all three had good flavor but that one just had a better balance for me- just the right amount of sweetness. The bbq pork got a little sweet for me if I ate too much at once. I personally didn't think the hot brisket was that hot but then again I eat pretty spicy food. There were samples at the front so you can try before you buy!! The store also sold dried fruits and nuts but I didn't try any of it. I was there solely for the jerky. I can't say that it was the best jerky I have ever had ( fyi the best is from Greenspot Market in California) but I also can't say I didn't like it or that it was just ok. If I am ever driving by again, I will stop and get more jerky. I wouldn't drive out of your way though. read more

So I was lucky enough to drive from Las Vegas to Phoenix. First thing about the drive... There's pretty much nothing but sand and mountains, and lots of cacti. I noticed a sign that said "Fresh Jerky" and "Really Good Jerky", so... why not, I had to try it. About and hour and a half from the Hoover Dam, you notice this little shack of a store that sells Jerky, Olives and Honey (I know, weird combination). If anyone has made jerky before it takes about 6-8 hours and has to be marinated before hand. The biggest thing that is hard about making jerky is to getting them consistently the same tenderness through the dehydrating process. I think this place has about the same problem. Some pieces are great while others are like eating a leather belt. The flavour altogether was alright... It wasn't amazing, but it was nice that it was made right there. The coolest thing about the jerky store was that they had multiple different kinds of meat. Meats like venison, beef, buffalo, turkey and more. Personally I really liked the buffalo jerky. I thought it was the best out of the bunch. In a weird location flanked by many cacti, it's definitely worth a stop on the highway. Try their jerky, and maybe even stop for a coffee across the way (they also have a coffee shop, i didn't go in though). It almsot melts in your mouth, and my jaw isn't even tired after chewing it! I, like the other reviewers was lured in by the 60 miles of road sign signs.... think "South of the Border" if you've ever been to South Carolina. Ironically, I almost missed it when I came upon it because it seems like they forgot the last sign saying.... "It's right here!" So, after slamming on the breaks and skidding the rental car to a stop in plume of dust, I managed to find myself in a parking spot out front -- and fortunately not in the ditch. Anyhow, this review ain't about my driving... its about the Jerky! There were samples of olives in the back of the store and the lady behind the counter gave us a sample of the jerky from a behind the counter stash. After all, it ain't ur lunch! (inside joke between Gus and I, i know) BEST JERKY I'VE EVER HAD, BAR NONE. not sure what else to say.... I mean, it was moist and delicous. We had the sweet and spicy flavored beef. If you are looking for the real chewy jerky, this isn't for you. what we got was not chewy at all. It was like a concentrated piece of marinated filet mignon. It was soooo good and moist and just melt in your mouth awesome. If I had known it was so good I would have bought 3 bags. I later found more jerky in Sedona, and Flagstaff, but neither compared to Gus' Jerky. I spent the same amount of money on those as I did on Gus, and I wish I would have just spent all the $$ at Gus and stocked up for the rest of our roadtrip. ...ohyeah, and they keep the Diet Dr. Pepper REAL cold. it has a little bit of ice in it so it was like a slushy and I swear it was the best Dr. Pepper I've ever had either... but that may have been the Desert talking. read more

My girlfriend and I were driving from Vegas to The Grande Canyon, and we saw a billboard for this place, 90 miles away. One of those "See Rock City" type of signs that preps you every 20 miles or so till you arrive at the roadside attraction. I told my girlfriend I wanted to check it out, and then I took a nap. She chose not to stop, and I was pretty bummed out. While at the Canyon, we stopped at a few places that sold Indian crafts and they also had Jerky for sale, but it was pricey ($15 a package), and it was imported from an out of state Indian tribe, so I skipped it. On the return trip back to Las Vegas I was at the wheel, and I made sure to stop at Gus's jerky shop. Gus was there. Very friendly guy. Pretty funny guy. Gave us all kinds of samples. I purchased 3 bags, Sweet and Savory, Elk, and Venison. Now that I am home, I wish I had purchased more. The stuff is superb. Better than anything sold on a commercial level. Its really, really good. I went online and found out that he ships. So 6 more bags are heading to Key West as I type this. The place looks scary from the road, at least it did to us. Dont let it scare you. Mixed feelings. I've been wanting to stop at Gus' for many years while driving between Vegas and Phoenix, but I kid you not, we stopped twice and they were closed. 3rd time's a charm, I guess, and we finally made it in to check out the jerky. The shop is nasty, seriously. Very small selection of jerky. Less dried fruits and nuts than you can find at Trader Joe's. A couple random items for sale like Kraft Italian dressing (not making this up). You might want to use the bathroom, seeing as how you're probably on a long drive, but it'd be cleaner and more modern to use one at a gas station where you have to get the key from the attendant. This one barely has running water. Prices are pretty high, even for jerky and dried fruit, which is naturally expensive. HOWEVER, the saving grace: the jerky is pretty good. We enjoyed both the beef teriyaki and the venison (peppered I think). I might stop in again while driving through, just wish they'd broaden their selection a little and revamp the shop. read more
