This place is definitely a house that might be easy to miss. Parking lot is small, but the food is delicious. New to the area so of course I wanted to try some fried chicken, and this place did not disappoint. This is the original location and they are still making good absolutely delicious. I got the breast and leg with baked beans and cole slaw. The chicken had so much flavor, not just the skin. Every bite was amazing. The naked beans were good, although a bit sweet. The slaw is on the wet side and sweet, it was really good. The 4 stars is because they had a few things on their menu that they did not have, so for sure a bummer. I'll probably skip on the fries green tomatoes next time.

This was by far the best Fried Chicken we have ever had. I thought the Loveless Cafe was the best, but now it doesn't compare. I don't know what the Gus's chain restaurants are like, but the original restaurant in Mason, TN was worth the drive. All orders are cooked to order. This is the original Gus's Fried Chicken in Mason, Tennessee. I loved that the business is still family run. We traveled from California and enjoyed driving around the little town of Mason. BEST FRIED CHICKEN EVER! https://gusfriedchicken.com/about-us/

Came here for lunch today (May 3) with coworkers and aside from a few to-go orders we were the only ones in the restaurant. I ordered the 3 piece dark (2 thighs & a leg) with mac-n-cheese and okra. The food was good but nothing to brag about. We waited at least 30 mins for our food and I was kind of disappointed that my chicken came out not pipping hot. Other than that the service was awesome and pricing great!

This location, chicken wise, is the best! The flavor seemed deeper and maybe a touch more pepper than the others. There will be no hour long lines or a bunch of unnecessary fan fair, just great chicken. The staff is friendly, but not overly eager. So, don't expect to be greeted and seated as soon as the door opens, but that adds to the charm of this place. I'd recently fallen out of love with Gus's...I felt the quality declining but this visit to the original gave me a new burn in my heart for the spicy chicken. I will drive to this location for now on to get my Gus's fill. Tourist should be visiting the Mason, TN location for the real experience and taste.

Chicken was GREAT as long as it was hot. Very salty. But still very good. We got slaw and potato salad with our meal. Both very good sides.

I had the veggie plate with butter beans (they were a bit sweet and limas, not true butter beans), fried squash (the slice it long ways and hand batter), spinach mashed potatoes, and deviled eggs (delicious, no notes). I tried both hush puppies and a roll. Personally, the hush puppies weren't my favorite, but the roll was buttery goodness:). Most importantly, I asked our server at the beginning if they still had chocolate cobbler and if they were running low to go ahead and bring it out. At first they had plenty, but a few minutes later cobbler was in front of me because she noticed it was running low. So dessert first! Don't mind if I do:) it was warm, gooey, and delicious. Others in my group had the chicken fried steak, and chicken tenders. Everyone was very happy with their meals! Service was great, though the kitchen was a little slow. It took about 30 mins to get our meals. Fun, old timey atmosphere - great service - and delicious home cooking. Will definitely be back.

As soon as you're seated, you'll have a tempting signboard presented at your table with every southern classic you can imagine. With entrees like fried chicken and catfish, endless sides like turnip greens, white beans, and just about anything you can imagine fried, and every kind of southern pie, it's all there. The catfish is magnificent, with that wonderfully gritty cornmeal batter surrounding flaky, tender fish. The complimentary roll is also delicious! And the servers are very nice here! But there are some downsides. The fried okra, my favorite southern side dish, is actually soft and soggy. No self respecting southerner would ever make soggy fried okra. It's about the worst I ever had. And the onion rings, which are hard to mess up, were burnt black and lacked flavor. They were inedible. The cashier is rude and doesn't have time for "thank you" or small talk or a smile or even giving you your receipt when nobody else is in line to pay their bill. That's just how it is. If you want good catfish, Sling Shot Charlie's will come through. But if you want a southern culinary experience that's enjoyable, there are much better places to have it!

What we ordered: Sweet tea: Being in the South, I always judge a place by its sweet tea. This is the molasses-style sweet tea--very sweet--so I'd recommend cutting it with unsweetened tea. Breakfast egg rolls: Delicious overall. The filling could've used a little more salt or seasoning, but the gravy was absolute perfection. Chicken & waffles: Fluffy waffles that leaned slightly sweet, but paired really well with the flavorful, well-fried chicken and maple syrup. I recommend asking for the syrup on the side. The portion is large enough to share. Buffalo chicken sliders: The clear winner of the day! The buffalo sauce was perfect, the buns were soft and fluffy, the chicken was crispy, and the shoestring fries were cooked just right. Caesar salad: Decent, but the real star was the blackened shrimp. The seasoning was excellent, and I'd definitely try something blackened again! Overall: Very good food, friendly and fast service, and a cute environment. I'd absolutely come back for dinner and would recommend it to anyone.

The biggest issue was the service. The employee working the cash register came across as rude and unfriendly, as if customers were inconveniencing him. Instead of feeling welcomed, I felt like we were being treated poorly, which put a damper on the entire visit. While the food tasted good, the portions were a bit skimpy on ingredients for the price. Considering how expensive everything was, I expected better value and a more positive customer experience. I know this restaurant has plenty of fans, but I found some of the employees to be arrogant and dismissive. The treatment we received felt rude and unprofessional, and it left a lasting negative impression. Overall, I am deeply disappointed. Good food can only make up for so much, and the poor service overshadowed what could have been an enjoyable meal. I would not return based on the way we were treated. It's very clean but very old stuff and to much on display with old plants everywhere.

There is plenty of parking in a lot across the street. We went inside and found it to be pretty busy, but we got a table for 4 quickly. It is probably way easier on the crew to clean up, and it adds to the relaxed atmosphere. I had the corn nuggets to start, yum! We finished them easily, they were so good. Then the entree of my chicken tenders, beans, and Mac and cheese came out, along with my sweet tea. The sweet tea was perfect, I drank a whole one during my meal and they gave me another to go in the souvenir Gus's cup. The food was just great, chicken was juicy and perfectly crunchy on the outside. Beans and Mac and cheese, delicious! I ate all of it even though I was stuffed. Before my flight back to California I needed one final southern meal (no good southern cookin on the west coast.) I am so happy I chose this place. First the staff, 10/5 stars!!! We didn't realize they were closing soon (about 30 minutes from the time of arrival) and showed up. The staff not only didn't even mention it but generously accommodated us! When we realized, we apologized and they were so kind and understanding. Now the food. WOW! So grateful I listened to my gut because I saved the best for last. We ordered a spread of food. Catfish, yams, fried chicken, collard greens, cobbler, etc. Everything was perfectly seasoned and cooked. Catfish was crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside. Each bite almost made me cry tears of joy. Home cooked taste but from the friend/family member that can tear it up in the kitchen. You can taste the love, dedication and pride. The prices are worth it for the quality and quantity. The atmosphere was welcoming and chill. Definitely a good spot for a family dinner/lunch after church. Again staff were so warm and kind. My mom ordered a pick two with half BLT and a half cup of chicken and wild rice soup. The wait was slow for some cold sandwiches and premade soup. My sandwich was good but it just tasted like regular deli meat on white sandwich bread. The chips came from a basket with two different types of sun chips, which were not my favorite. My mom's soup did not have any chicken or meat in it, just the broth and lots of beans. It was also very spicy, which unfortunately didn't work with her dietary restriction. She wasn't able to eat much of it. We both got drinks, as well, but never refills. Our waitress didn't come back to check on us. Together the bill was in the mid $30s + tax and a tip.
