Sling Shot Charlie's is a classic southern experience, stepping into a space that captures the culture and cuisine of rural America. As soon as you're seated, you'll have a tempting signboard presented at your table with every southern classic you can imagine. With entrees like fried chicken and catfish, endless sides like turnip greens, white beans, and just about anything you can imagine fried, and every kind of southern pie, it's all there. The catfish is magnificent, with that wonderfully gritty cornmeal batter surrounding flaky, tender fish. The complimentary roll is also delicious! And the servers are very nice here! But there are some downsides. The fried okra, my favorite southern side dish, is actually soft and soggy. No self respecting southerner would ever make soggy fried okra. It's about the worst I ever had. And the onion rings, which are hard to mess up, were burnt black and lacked flavor. They were inedible. The cashier is rude and doesn't have time for "thank you" or small talk or a smile or even giving you your receipt when nobody else is in line to pay their bill. That's just how it is. If you want good catfish, Sling Shot Charlie's will come through. But if you want a southern culinary experience that's enjoyable, there are much better places to have it! read more

As per usual, I forgot pics - but imagine your grandma's cooking during a summer harvest from her own garden. A perfect meat and three. Everything was delicious. I had the veggie plate with butter beans (they were a bit sweet and limas, not true butter beans), fried squash (the slice it long ways and hand batter), spinach mashed potatoes, and deviled eggs (delicious, no notes). I tried both hush puppies and a roll. Personally, the hush puppies weren't my favorite, but the roll was buttery goodness:). Most importantly, I asked our server at the beginning if they still had chocolate cobbler and if they were running low to go ahead and bring it out. At first they had plenty, but a few minutes later cobbler was in front of me because she noticed it was running low. So dessert first! Don't mind if I do:) it was warm, gooey, and delicious. Others in my group had the chicken fried steak, and chicken tenders. Everyone was very happy with their meals! Service was great, though the kitchen was a little slow. Overall, I had a very enjoyable dining experience and would definitely come back. The restaurant has a warm, friendly, and welcoming atmosphere. It's a little dark inside and somewhat cluttered with décor, but it adds to the local charm. They play classic oldies music at just the right volume, making it easy to relax and enjoy your meal. My waitress, Gina, was outstanding--very friendly, courteous, attentive, and made me feel welcome from the moment I arrived. I ordered the chicken-fried steak with mashed potatoes and asparagus. The chicken-fried steak was very good and cooked well. The mashed potatoes were also enjoyable. My only minor disappointment was the asparagus, as the serving consisted of only three spears. While everything tasted good, I probably wouldn't order that particular meal again and would like to try something different on my next visit. The restaurant was very clean and appeared to be a favorite gathering place for many local residents, which is always a good sign. I also had the opportunity to sample one of their new blueberry muffins, and it was delicious. Another nice feature is that they serve homemade pizzas on Fridays, which I'll definitely have to come back and try. Overall, this is a friendly, clean, locally loved restaurant with excellent service and a welcoming atmosphere. I have only been there twice and may have been there at a bad time. The ambiance was ok geared more to locals so someone new coming in was kinda lost on procedures. Wait staff was nice but very hurried. The biggest complaint was the food portions. The portions were small but the price was equivalent to what I would pay somewhere else for twice the food. Ate here last night - have been here one other time about 8 years ago- got to the place at 630 pm and waited about 30 mns for a table then about 40 mns for the food. This is a small family owned place - so I really don't expect the wait to be this long. I feel that the big party that took about 3 tables of people was causing the problem - but still expect way more from a local place- if I wanted to wait this long - I would have went to Wolfchase and ate a chain restaurant. I loved the catfish filets, sweet potato, and fried green tomatoes were nice & thick, great taste. Ranch was good also, not sure if that's house made or not. I expected a wait on a Saturday evening, but not after being seated. We got a table in less than 15 minutes but it was a full 20 minutes before our order was taken. Then we waited and waited for our food while watching others who ordered after us enjoy their meals. And we ordered the same entrees! The fried catfish was tasted but the fries were cool. DO NOT order the grilled chicken sandwich (one of the few entrees that isn't fried). The breast was obviously a precooked, frozen breast and simply reheated making it dry and tough. And the bun was the cheapest hamburger bun made. It looked like they tried to toast it on a grill but must have sat something on top as the bun was smashed, cracked, and fell to pieces when you picked it up. The bad thing, the owners didn't care. When we checked out, they asked how was everything? I relied, "You don't want to know." They just said sorry but didn't ask what was the problem so they don't care enough to fix issues. Excellent " off the beaten path " find for Memphis area travelers looking for soul food. This family establishment has a real down home feel and the food is great. I had catfish and a side of fried chicken livers (couldn't resist) with rich white beans and ham, juicy turnip greens, jalapeño cornbread and an Arnold Palmer in a giant mason jar. The place was packed on an early Saturday eve but the 15 min wait for a table was worth it. Then the 20 min wait for the food was worth it too. The servers were all attentive, affable and helpful. My dinning neighbors friendly. Come hungry and with enough time to slow down to a more "Southern" speed. It's a popular place and really the only restaurant for miles. One thing I couldn't help but notic was the demographic. It was 99.9% white. I felt a bit sad there wasn't a better representative mix of folk in the area, but I guess it was the lay of the land and due to a fair number of confederate flags on neighborhood porches. A shame IMHYO. This food would warm the hearts of us all. I do believe that's why they call it "Soul Food. " I'll definitely be routing back here again! read more

I ate at Sling Shot Charlie's tonight. Wow! If you like country fried steak with HOMEMADE onion gravy, this is the place. It's freshly hand breaded and fried crispy and not greasy at all! This is now a dangerous craving of mine. The veggies are delicious but the cornbread has everything to improve upon. The dessert was overly sweet in the worst way that I couldn't get past the sugar taste to actually get the flavor of the dessert. This estblishment is a little ways outside of town but well worth the drive, food is amazing, somewhere between Piccadilly and Grandma's house. Their meatloaf has a very special brown glaze on it which I must admit I was a little nervous departing from what I what I was used to which is tomato sauce on my meat loaf, however the brown glaze was delightfully amazing. Also this is one of the few places that you can get Fried Green Tomatoes, and they do not disappoint. Also this place is by no means fancy inside, which is fine by me, overhead is low, prices are low as well for what you get. We had a horrible experience at Slingshot Charlie's. We waited an hour for our food went to the front to talk to someone about why it took so long. The hostess said she would look into it and never came to our table. Got up to leave stood at counter to pay for salad. Mgr/ owner told me we aren't fast food. I told her 3 tables seated after us are thru eating and leaving. It didn't faze her she said the next time you come in we still won't be able to serve you in 10 minutes. We are not fast food. Some time I would love to order all the homemade dessert and try them all with a few friends. We ordered catfish and burger with bacon & cheddar to go. My husband liked his burger and I didn't like my catfish. First of all, they didn't put catsup and tartar sauce in the bag. I don't think customers should have to ask for condiments. Restaurants should be the one asking customers if they want condiments. Additionally, the girl that took my order over the phone put me on hold for about 10 minutes, so I hung up, but she called me back. I should not have put my order and should have gone to Sonic or McDonalds instead of entertaining her call. Anyway, the catfish batter was too thick for me and it just didn't taste good--it was bland. I ate one of the catfish filet and unfortunately, had to throw the other one. This place is AMAZING! The place on the outside is not appealing, but the food is off the charts. I had the country fried steak and the fried fish, both of which were hot and delicious. The only thing that would've made it better was a nice cold beer, I did not get a chance to try the dessert, but I have heard from other customers that they are made from scratch and are absolutely to die for. My wife and I were looking for something different and we're on our way out to Mason when we passed this place in Galloway. Remembering we both said we wanted to try it years ago, we decided to stop. It is a cool place for sure. It is kind of a hole in the wall, old country store looking place but definitely has charm without a scary redneck vibe! We arrived around 6pm and the place was packed with the early bird special people. Thankfully, there were two tables open and we were seated right away. We ordered some fried green tomatoes to start. They were good but not the best I've ever had as they were a little on the greasy/oily side. I ordered the firehouse burger and my wife, the catfish. The catfish comes with a single filet but you may add a second for an up charge, which my wife did based on the waitress's description of the size of the filets. Unfortunately, they filets were huge and one would have been enough (lunch the next day for me). Like the tomatoes, the catfish and jalapeño hush puppies were good, just not great. My burger was also huge and tasty but the meat patty was overdone (well) for my liking (vs medium). I ordered onion rings as my side and they were battered the same as the tomatoes so just a tad on the greasy side. As for service, I can only describe it as adequate. We had to ask for plates for the appetizer and when we did she only brought one for my wife. I asked for lemon with my unsweetened tea and had to re-ask twice before I actually got it. We asked for hot sauce and Heinz 57 and she brought two bottles of each with barely any in them, weird. She was very nice but the lack of attention to detail kind of crawls all over me. This is especially true of places with pricing on the high side for what it is. Our total bill with tip (I still gave her just under 20% but maybe I shouldn't have) was a bit over $50 for the two of us. We might go back to try the meatloaf but probably only if we found ourselves "right there" again. read more

Both my wife and I ordered 2 burgers(they are HUGE) with customized condiments that regular people eat mustard tomato Mayo etc NOT THE BURNING HOT FIRE sauce?! Me personally I liked it. Wow! The food is still incredible! Come on back. Like many of you, my wife have been missing - since February - the super tasty food at Slingshot Charlie's. We started, once they were able to, get their food "Take Out" and eat at home. We did that a couple of times, and the food was delicious. Well, recently they opened up for "Dine In", so my wife and I made the trip out for lunch - and ate the fabulous food there. They are observing all the COVID Safety measures, so nothing to be concerned about. So good to be back "inside" and eating the food while it is hot. It can be very difficult, if not tortuous, to have to smell the great food for the 30 minute ride home - and not be able to enjoy it all. I must say, though, that even then the food was still hot when we got home, and very tasty. For our latest meal, my wife and I couldn't pass up on getting our favorite Veggie plates. I had the Butter Beans, Sweet Potatoe Casserole and, oh, the Fried Squash. Actually, I got TWO helpings of the Fried Squash - it's my favorite.
