Fresh off a tour of Old Dominick Distillery, I walked across the street to Gus's World Famous Fried Chicken for an excellent chicken sandwich. The recommended side of baked beans were so good I immediately wished I'd ordered more. I wrapped it up with a warm piece of pecan pie. The restaurant is small, but service was quick. Street parking was available.

Gus's World Famous Fried Chicken earns the "world famous" in its name. The chicken is spicy, crispy, and perfectly juicy so good that I had to order a second round before leaving. Simple, no frills setup, but the food does all the talking. Absolute must if you're passing through Memphis.

The place was a small building in downtown Memphis. Parking was limited in front of restaurant but free. The service was good. We were seated quickly and served quickly. The waiter was nice and attentive. He made sure we had what we needed and wanted. Seven is his name. The food was not world famous. The chicken was spicy and bland. No seasoning. The Mac and cheese tasted like boxed Mac and cheese with shredded cheese on top. The greens tasted like can greens not fresh. The best thing was the souvenir cup. I will not return. I gave it 2 stars because it was free parking in front of restaurant and the good service from seven.

Fried Chicken fans unite! This place is the bomb! We had to stop here while in Gus's home state to try one of the older locations for the character and, of course, food. I've had this chicken once before while in Kansas City during COVID and had it delivered to our hotel. I remember loving it then and after today's visit, I still love it. I had the 2 piece dark plate with a thigh and drumstick and my sides were beans and slaw. My wife had 2 of the tenders with some dipping sauce. I loved the chicken as it is cooked just right. The food is hot from the kitchen and very tasty. The coleslaw is just a bit sweet which makes it a good balance to the chicken. The beans were tasty as well. I tried the thick and meaty tenders as well and they were good but my heart (and cholesterol levels) belong to the fried chicken. This location had a constant flow of customers while we were there and I bet it is always that way. It reminds me of Ezells Fried Chicken in the Seattle area. Different but quality food with a focus on the bird. We had a sweet server named Alexis who did a great job (give her a raise please!). She really knows the menu and is nice. I bought a T Shirt while here to wear around the Seattle area in hopes that one day Gus's expands up that way.

The fried chicken here was really good. I don't really like fried chicken but was very impressed! The skin was crispy and the chicken meat was flavorful! We came early before the lunch peak time and was able to get a table right away. It was still packed but we got our food pretty quickly. I tried the chess pie, which I never tried and loved it! The texture was great and not overly sweet! There are some parking spots in front. A must on your Memphis trip!

I've had a lot of fried chicken and places boast "best fried chicken" and be disappointed. Gus is an exception. Everything was amazing and tasty. Chicken was hot and fresh with just the right amount of seasoning. Highly recommended and I see why it's "World Famous" and have to agree!

Gus's World Famous Fried Chicken downtown is the BEST fried chicken in the U.S. No exaggeration! Taiwan is my hometown, and I usually crave everything when I go back, but ever since Gus's, I don't even miss Taiwanese fried chicken anymore. The chicken is super flavorful. You can really taste the marinade, not just seasoning on the outside. Crispy, juicy, and dark meat is my favorite! I've tried other Gus's locations and love all of them, but somehow I still feel Downtown location just tastes the most authentic. Also, their cole slaw is honestly the best I've had at any fast-casual spot, and the fried okra is so good. A must-try in Memphis!

Gus's has some special chicken. I recommend eating it in as the chicken is wonderfully crispy there. It's just spicy enough to be interesting but not overpowering. If you want some great fried chicken, head to Gus's.

Equal to the best fried chicken, I've had anywhere. I had the three-piece dark plate which comes with slaw and beans. The sides were fine, but not exceptional. I also had a side of mac & cheese which was excellent. The crust on the chicken was excellent, it was juicy inside and spicy, but not too spicy. Friendly place with full table service. Prices quite reasonable.

The hype is real. You just don't see these types of places much anymore. The food is iconic, the service was fantastic, and the hole-in-wall ambiance is one of a kind. Gus's is just a must stop in Memphis.

TtttHHeeEEeeee best fried chicken in the mid south with a spicy punch! Service: typical Memphis attitude, mildly nice. Ambience: casual Pricing: .a 2 pc with sides and a slice of bread will set you back about $13. Depending on white or dark meats.

My friends and I came here for lunch on a Friday afternoon. Unfortunately, the soda machine was broken so we were limited to bottled drinks. I ordered the two piece dark set, which comes with beans and slaw. I substituted the beans for greens. The chicken was delicious; very juicy and the coating was crisp. The greens were also good. The slaw was a bit sweet for my tastes, but pretty average overall. Great service and I would recommend to anyone visiting Memphis!

Gus's Fried Chicken was a solid 3 star experience overall. The chicken itself was crispy, flavorful, and definitely the highlight of the meal. The atmosphere was casual and welcoming, making it a comfortable spot to grab a bite. I wasn't really a fan of the mac and cheese, as it leaned way too heavily on the processed cheese flavor and ended up overly cheesy in a not-so-great way. The texture and taste reminded me more of melted processed cheese than a rich, homemade mac and cheese. However, the service was delightful and easily made up for some of the disappointment with the sides. The staff was friendly, attentive, and made us feel genuinely welcomed throughout the visit. While not everything hit the mark for me, the great service and tasty fried chicken make Gus's worth trying if you're in the mood for comfort food.

Gus's World Famous Fried Chicken Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - Gus's World Famous Fried Chicken

Is the food safe for nut allergies?

Probably not they use peanut oil for frying so unless that is not an issue ( oils can be different in some cases) I would be real hesitant and be sorry that you miss out, but even the best stuff is not worth your life

    Is the chicken spicy?

I ate there last fall. It's pretty mild but comes with a bottle of hot sauce to suit your tastes. And it lives up to its name/reputation. Enjoy

My son has a nut allergy. I called and they said they use shortening brand peanut oil, which I can't find. Is it safe for him to eat here?

When in doubt don't do it. It would be best to direct this type of question to the establishment or research it on their website.

    Is there parking?

    Street parking.

I eat most of my food with NO spices (salt/pepper ok). Will I be able to eat your chicken?

I just ate here 2 days ago. I like spice, and it's spicy. If you can't do any spice you won't be able to eat the chicken here. They even use the same breading for kids chicken strips so that also is not an option. It's pretty heavy on cayenne.

Are the beans made with pork?

Thank you for reaching out. We do make our beans with pork. We also make our collard greens with pork as well. We do offer a variety of other sides without pork though. We have coleslaw, potato salad, mac & cheese, fried okra, french fries, and…

How spicy is the chicken? Wife doesn't do spicy food

I was worried about this also. I got chicken tenders and they weren't spicy at all. Great flavor!

The food however was honestly meh (in my opinion). I got a creole dish and to be fair my dish looked beautiful. The plating was 10/10 but the taste for me left something to be desired. After eating this dish I questioned if I even like creole sauce because it really just wasn't that good. If this is a preference issue, I honestly don't know. I also thought the charcuterie appetizer had a weird mix of items on it from club crackers, to meat and cheese, and random veggies. Not bad but just kind of a weird mix. My husband ordered the salmon and he said it was good, not the best he's had but it was good. Other friends of ours got the white fish among the many other dishes. I did have a salad with these apples on it which was incredibly yummy. I will say though my dish looked amazing some of the other dishes were not plated well. Not to nitpick but to want to be considered a more upscale restaurant which means charging guest more money than say a local Applebee's then knowing how to appropriately garnish or drizzle sauce to elevate at plate is important (see my picture of the chicken dish). All and all not my favorite restaurant but definitely not the worst!!

As a child I grew up on fried fish filets and hush puppies until my grandfather had to retire and sell his restaurant due to his Health. He still cooks up a mess of catfish for us about two or three times a year when we visit. Yum! My standards for good catfish are extremely high. Good fried catfish is not greasy, light cornmeal batter, tender flaky inside, and slightly crispy on the outside. Sounds simple enough but the truth of the matter is... Good fried catfish takes skill. After an epic searched for any decent catfish in Memphis and surrounding areas that took a few years ... My family and I decided to give up. And when I heard about Soul Fish it took some considerable convincing to get them to go. We where, none of us, disappointed! Soul Fish is without a doubt the best Catfish in Memphis. It is perfectly fried... Hushpuppies are tasty, coleslaw edible if not always yummy, fried pickles crisp and tart, pickle green tomatoes so yummy I could swim in them, and vegetables always cooked and seasons well (special recognition to the cabbage, broccoli, and black eyed peas). The service is always friendly, fast, efficient, and correct. The blackened catfish is pretty tasty too ... Sometimes they get a little heavy handed on the seasoning. Deserts are pretty great as well. My sister loves the Mississippi mud chocolate thingy they have (I'm not a chocolate fan). I've introduced many people (about 40 or so) to Soul Fish - locals and visitors alike - and no one ... And I mean not a single one of them where disappointed. So why four stars instead of five? True... the catfish is the best in Memphis - however it is not the best I've ever had. And Sometimes a filet or two at Soul Fish fall short of perfection... However ... I'm a regular and a fan of Soul Fish Cafe. If you have spent hours and disappointed meals trying to find good catfish in Memphis ... Look no further ... This is the place for you. I promise you will not Be disappointed!

I ordered wings and two dry slabs of ribs. When my family and I finally decided to eat the ribs on Monday, they were disgusting. They had seasoning caked all on them, and they were overly salty. We wiped off the caked-on seasoning and tried to eat around the saltiness. I was praying the 2nd slab was not the same. When I opened them on 5/27 to see, they were the same. I was trying to avoid calling because I just didn't feel like being bothered. But I called. I left a message for the manager to return my call that morning because "he is in the middle of an interview." So I called back that afternoon and was transferred to Ethan. I explained the situation to him. As I was speaking, he kept making the noise un-huh. So, I stopped talking and asked him what it meant aside from it just being rude as hell. He went on to explain that they missed a step and did not rub in the seasoning and shake it off. I don't care. It's an internal quality issue that should be handled with the prep and cook staff. Not me. He asked if I had my receipt and, in a tone that suggested he was doing me a favor, advised me that he would replace the slab. No apologies for the inconvenience or anything.   After my long workday, I went all the way downtown to get the slab replaced. In person, Ethan is just as rude. I asked if he was going to replace both slabs. He could clearly see the quality was trash. He said no and that he would only replace one. Then went on to offer me sides and a slice of cake. No, thank you. I can afford sides and cake just like I did those trash slabs of ribs. Those slabs of ribs cost $62.40 before taxes. With taxes probably being another 5 or 6 dollars. Your mistakes and poor quality should not cost me. He had a young lady bring the replacement slab back out to me. She didn't say thank you or anything. One thing I know is that a white man or woman patronizing your business would not have been treated this way. As a result, moving forward I will spend my Black woman dollars elsewhere on barbeque and smoked chicken wings. Also, I removed you all from my company's approved catering list where we spend a nice amount with you all yearly. Tell Ethan, thanks for helping me see the light and not spend money where I'm not respected and where my customer experience isn't valued.

The vibe felt like a speakeasy turned restaurant. While larger than a traditional speakeasy, it still managed to feel cozy, intimate and inviting. Shortly after we were seated, the restaurant manager stopped by our table. My sister asked for cocktail recommendations... if you're a cocktail fan, you're in for a treat. Their signature cocktails were thoughtfully crafted and exceptionally well-balanced. We went with their spicy margaritas. As for the food, I could have easily ordered a second helping of the Cajun Abita shrimp appetizer and called it dinner. The shrimp was perfectly seasoned, and the sauce was outstanding. The accompanying beer bread was equally delicious...slightly reminiscent of cornbread but with its own unique flavor. My sister and I weren't huge fans of the She Crab Soup. It was simply too rich and creamy for our tastes. One bite was enough for us although my dad seemed to enjoy it. The Blue Window Wedge Salad is their take on a classic wedge which was spectacular. It will be hard to find another wedge salad that measures up. The sweet potato pecan casserole was good but it felt like it was missing something that we couldn't quite put our finger on what. The maple bacon Brussels sprouts were a table favorite...perfectly cooked and well-seasoned. My dad and sister both enjoyed the braised beef, which was served with mashed potatoes and asparagus. To finish, we shared the white chocolate bread pudding and it was absolutely delicious. In fact, the table next to us seemed to enjoy theirs just as much.
