This is a good spot to grab a coffee and catch up with a friend. It has a friendly neighborhood atmosphere. The waitress was very nice. I was disappointed in how long it took our food to arrive, we were the only two customers ordering food, it was very quiet, but I think it took close to a half hour to make two orders of pancakes and then they forgot the eggs. Sweet little spot off the beaten path across from Edgewood Park. We parked to walk to Bella's for brunch, and it looked nice so kept it in mind in case Bella's was too busy. As it turns out, Bella's was packed with people and was stuffy and hot, and the host was scrambling trying to make room for everyone. It just felt uncomfortable, so we decided to leave and return here. It was a beautiful day,so we picked a sunny spot on the deck out front. There is counter service (and table service if you ask, but when they get busy you might be forgotten). Two nice young women were working alone and were a bit overwhelmed once it got busy. Visited my hometown and searched for a coffee spot within walking distance and I'm lad I tried this place out! Their coffee was nice and their food was even better! After not having been here for a while, especially during covid, I forgot that this is probably my favorite brunch place in New Haven. I think it's the combination of welcoming ambience, friendly and attentive staff, and latin inspired food, and the selection of drinks and pastries. My friend and I found our own seats by the counter upon entry and were offered coffee immediately. The person behind the counter was very hospitable, anticipating out needs before we could ask him- adding in steamed oat milk when I asked him if they had any, offering lime when we asked for water, waiting until the conversation died down before asking whether we needed to-go boxes. I got the chilaquiles and my friend got the challah bread french toast. Both were delicious! This experience definitely reminds me to go back for more, and to bring my book next time too. When it gets busy, you can expect a couple of mistakes here on your order, because they usually only have a few staff working, and it's popular! So I stopped by a local restaurant and they were unexpectedly closed, but a manager was there and when I asked where tondo....he said without hesitation "next door". And its good! Simple menu, simple set up. Order and grab a table, or in my case, a window seat and watch the world go by. This is a great local neighborhood, and I feel very comfortable here and WOW! The food was good. I had a simple rice and chicken dish, they called it the naked burrito, deliscous! Subtracting 2 stars because the pastries have been inedible, with a thick density, blandness and off taste, the last 3 times I've been here to grab a croissant or muffin. (Other aspects of the restaurant have also changed a lot during the pandemic years, though I hear there are plans to revamp the service in the very near future) Sad, since a long time back, Manjares used to have some of the best pastries in New Haven. Manjares was an absolutely delightful discovery after a Saturday yoga class. My friends and I gave a big ol' NOPE to the two spots down the street sporting 1.5 hour waits, and we were thrilled to find Manjares so close by. It's got an excellent breakfast and lunch menu, plus breakfast is served all day! I ordered a breakfast burrito which came absolutely STUFFED with sausage, cheese, black beans, rice, scrambled eggs, cilantro, tomato, pepper and onion. I had to take half of it home it was so enormous. I also enjoyed a pastry - sort of like a cheese danish, and it was exceptional! Oh Bella's how y'all got competition, I THOUGHT Bella's took the win on brunch but this adorable little restaurant less then a block away with their comfy vibe was mint. As soon as I walked in and saw the half empty pastry window and the stand with macaroons I was in pre diabetic heaven, the food clearly has to be fire. We had a Greek omelet, a naked chicken burrito, vanilla latte, macaroons and a Snapple (lol) the people including customers are just so friendly and the adorable lady in the front is so warm and inviting she even zaps all the wasps out like a OG so keep people like me from getting a stroke. Manjares is everything I look for in a cafe. I love that there's space to sit alone and work or to meet with friends. There's also plenty of sunlight and a view of the park. I usually order the ham burrito. It can take a while to come out when they're busy, but it comes out fresh and hot! So worth it. And it's a big portion too so I usually eat half and save the rest for later. The staff here is really nice too and connected to the local community. Huge plus. read more

And, boy, did we make the right choice. It's a small place, but it definitely has a community feel to it. The restaurant was being run by only 3 people that morning (one in the kitchen, one taking orders, and one making drinks) so it was a bit slow service, but they were very kind and apologetic. Manjares was such an unexpected, delightful breakfast place! It's a unique cafe that specializes in both Spanish and American breakfast/lunch options. They're actually expanding into the storefront next door! I came here with a friend on a weekday morning, and even at 8 am there were a handful of people inside working on laptops or having conversations. The cashier was a wonderfully sweet lady who took our orders and then told us to sit wherever. It's a cozy yet spacious place with mixed chairs and a variety of different paintings. Breakfast is served all-day. I ordered the Manjares eggs, which come with two eggs of any style with a Caribbean complement of yucca, plantains, and a corn arepa. My friend ordered the smoked salmon omelette. I really enjoyed my dish, especially since I've never had this unique combination for breakfast before! The poached eggs were soft-boiled and lightly salted (a lot of brunch spots don't do this). The plantains aren't the typical sweet, fried types. They're much more savory with an almost nutty aroma. The yucca (a root vegetable also known as cassava) resembles a large Asian taro or a stringier-version of a potato, but it could've been seasoned better. The corn arepa was perfectly alright, but I'm more biased towards Rubamba's version. It's a very carb-filled breakfast, but they also serve pickled onions that cut through the heavy feeling. Overall, I'd say food would be a 3/5. I'm rounding this up to a 4/5 because I loved the atmosphere and service of Manjares. Even though service could have been a bit faster, the environment of the restaurant was very calm and relaxed with morning music in the background. It definitely helped me be more awake and optimistic for the day, and that's hard to find in most restaurants! read more

I feel bad leaving this review because it's a local establishment, near my home, and it's really cute, but the food just wasn't good. Our coffee tasted over-brewed, the sandwich I ordered was dry and flavorless, my boyfriend's breakfast burrito had a really off-putting smell, and the empanadas we ordered during happy hour were only half full! I really tried to find the bright side with this one, but it just kept falling short. I don't think I'll be back anytime soon... read more

Oh. My. Gosh. I wish I could give 6 stars. New Haven desperately needed a Peruvian place. You do not want to miss out on this little gem. I came here with my wife because we are always looking for ceviche. I haven't done my "food happy dance" in a long time. The food here makes me do that! We tried the ceviche - one of the best ceviches I have had in a long time (get the medium spice, it's perfect), the scallop tiradito (my favorite - perfectly seasoned and the sauce is amazing), the arroz chaufa (the salmon was seasoned and cooked perfectly and the skin was so crispy), and the anticuchos (the steak was melt in your mouth good). I recommend all of those dishes and can't wait to come back to try the rest! read more

Unsure of the rave reviews...I'm guessing their brunch customers are just those who didn't want to wait in line at the good places nearby. Probably 2.5 stars for food but the place was filthy. Don't have open slotted picnic like tables if you're not gonna clean inside them. Disgusting.... we only didn't leave because we had zero time to eat elsewhere. Next time I will choose Dunkin' ..... on top of the dirty table the bathroom was also gross. The disgusting repurposed (obviously from a flood) vanity from someone's house is weak. Atleast remove the original TP holder !!! Fix the mouse holes above the baseboard (not just steel wool) and for god sakes replace the shoe molding. Literally $200 bucks and 3 hours would make this room acceptable ..... pic to follow. Food was decent. They put enough onions in my omelette to kill a small animal. (Maybe they should have served my omelette in the bathroom to kill the mouse:). The mimosa was terrible?Must be the cheapest syrupppy champagne they had. When to take a bite of my eggs and the entire "omelette" came with it...rubber. 1 piece of toast and 1 strawberry to accompany the "omelette"? To top it off an owner or manager sat down with a customer to talk for about 20 Mins. I heard him say "the kitchen staff has it all under control so I have time to chat"..... it took every ounce of strength for me not to turn to him and yell well that's great the kitchen is covered why don't you clean your effin restaurant. Giving this coffee house two stars , because the service was terrible and we waited 20 minutes for three out of the four coffees we received . We didn't even receive the last coffee after my brother politely reminded them we were missing a latte. The barista just looked at him like she was going to make it , then put the cup down and continue to serve others. The fact she blatantly blew him off , I found extremely disrespectful. We didn't even receive a refund for the missing coffee. You'd be better off at Dunkin' Donuts around the corner. The three coffees we did receive however were okay. With 90% milk and the other 10% coffee, I could make a better and cheaper latte at home. read more

This is a wonderful hideaway unlike some of the other spots nearby. Quaint decor, great menu options with plenty of vegetarian options. I enjoyed a coffee while I waited for breakfast. The coffee was nice and strong full of flavor. I helped myself to cream and such at the counter. There are some self serve aspects like clear your own table, but I don't mind that if you're taking care of the important issues like making me breakfast. The place was a little busy on Sunday morning but the ladies kept putting out great looking food steadily. I was very excited to get my omelet filled with spinach, sundried tomatoes, and the swiss that i substituted for Feta. We split a Challah French Toast which was 3 huge pieces, fresh fruit, whipped cream and syrup. Delicous!!!!! Every bite. We tried out the new tapas bar today and had a wonderful time. We've been to the regular cafe many times and are diehard fans of their brunch options and espresso drinks. This bar/dinner option is a great addition to the neighborhood, and we will be back! We both enjoyed delicious drinks and a well made (and large!) tapa. My one critique is that our waters came with plastic straws in them. I know this is small, but I am sensitive to the use of single-use plastics, especially in such unnecessary ways. I hope in the future they will transition to providing straws only to those who explicitly ask for one. I am happy to have a new place to dine in Westville and can't wait to sit on the patio with a drink this summer. I hope Manjares will consider their environmental impact, so I can feel good about supporting them! Straws are a good place to start! read more

Went for brunch on a Saturday. Our server was horrible. From what I understand, she is the owner's daughter. She seemed to be more interested in making out with her husband than tending to customers. My friend had to get his own beer as she left it on the counter for ten minutes to sit outside. At one point, our server and her "friend" both went into the back for a few minutes and reappeared... she smirking and he adjusting his pants. Manjares is an OK place to grab a bite to eat, so long as you're not in a hurry. The first time I went here was a Saturday and we waited over 30 minutes for an egg and cheese sandwich. I thought it was because the place was swamped, only to discover that the order had not even been placed. In somewhat of a hurry I finally received a sandwich to go. They did make up for the mistake by refunding our money, which I appreciated, but by that point I was so hungry and in a hurry that I swore Id never return...Well, Ive since gone back and had their soup and sandwich combo, and it was really tasty (and timely). The squash soup was a little odd tasting to me though. Overall, this place is cute, with decent amounts of seating with good views of the park across the street. The food is good. The service is not worth mentioning, except to say that they could afford to employ people who are a little more friendly and enthusiastic about having paying customers in front of them. Ive worked in service before, so heres a tip: SMILE and ask how your customer is doing when they walk up to the cash register. otherwise, they might question giving you their money next time. read more

If I could give zero stars it would be too much. Our evening started off poorly. My husband ordered a beer and I a glass of pinot grigio. The waitress brought his beer and nothing for me and didn't say anything. We waited and about 5 minutes later the bartender came over to tell us the pinot had been in the "closet" and was warm. He put it on ice and it would be ready when our meals came. If I had realized that would be more than a half hour later I probably would have ordered something else. The evening went downhill from there. After sitting another 20 minutes (and remember I still had nothing to drink) I flagged the waitress and asked if we could order. She came back and we ordered one small dish to share to start and two large dishes as our main course. About 15 minutes later the ceviche my husband ordered as a main dish came to the table and I finally got my wine. We were a bit taken aback though since we hadn't had our app first but decided to go with the flow. My main came out (no exaggeration as I was timing it) 15 minutes after my husband was served his main. He had finished his dish and I quickly ate mine - I ordered a rare steak but got a medium one. The plaintains were oily and the rice was dry. On the positive side the fried egg on the rice was perfectly cooked. We never got the small plate we ordered. We asked for the check. At no time did anyone apologize for the shoddy service or comp anything. We left and will never be back. It was truly a bad experience. read more
