Ate at Manjares again with friends on Sept. 2nd. Excellent tapas, seafood paella, and lamb chops. Great atmosphere and nice folks. Good cocktails. Hidden gem. Busy.

This is my girlfriends to go place for a brunch as you can sit outdoors and enjoy a great cup of coffee or champagne if you desire and if you're really feeling festive you can have your typical screwdriver or bloody Mary. That's what we love about this place we all get exactly what we and there's always a least 6 of us so to please 6 women you have to be doing something right. The coffee is always delicious as are there desserts. Can't go wrong. So don't miss out give it a try!!

Visited my hometown and searched for a coffee spot within walking distance and I'm lad I tried this place out! Their coffee was nice and their food was even better! To top it off you have a great view of Edgewood park form the patio or sidewalk seating! The food was light, well seasoned, and filling! The salad tasted very fresh, and the chicken and rice was savory and delicious! Definitely try the Baked chick burrito then go for a cathartic walk in Edgewood park! I will definitely be going again!

Excellent little coffee shop with pastries and smoothies. Service was quick and he also did a great job of describing and explaining all the goodies available. Yum!

After not having been here for a while, especially during covid, I forgot that this is probably my favorite brunch place in New Haven. I think it's the combination of welcoming ambience, friendly and attentive staff, and latin inspired food, and the selection of drinks and pastries. My friend and I found our own seats by the counter upon entry and were offered coffee immediately. The person behind the counter was very hospitable, anticipating out needs before we could ask him- adding in steamed oat milk when I asked him if they had any, offering lime when we asked for water, waiting until the conversation died down before asking whether we needed to-go boxes. I got the chilaquiles and my friend got the challah bread french toast. Both were delicious! This experience definitely reminds me to go back for more, and to bring my book next time too. Edited: the above review applies to when it's not busy! When it gets busy, you can expect a couple of mistakes here on your order, because they usually only have a few staff working, and it's popular! But they're so nice about it and will be happy to fix anything without issue.

Quiet in here...but the food is good!

So I stopped by a local restaurant and they were unexpectedly closed, but a manager was there and when I asked where tondo....he said without hesitation "next door". And its good! Simple menu, simple set up. Order and grab a table, or in my case, a window seat and watch the world go by. This is a great local neighborhood, and I feel very comfortable here and WOW! The food was good. I had a simple rice and chicken dish, they called it the naked burrito, deliscous! The side salad simply prepared with avocado and apple and dressing, perfect and I treated myself so an Apricot Danish for dessert...the sweet tooth was so satisfied. I will be back!

    Bar area, with the owner

The food is amazing, the owner is a sweetheart and really professional, they also have a bar and the bartender makes and best margaritas. If you want to relax and chill and have some good food and drinks.. definitely go for it.

Manjares was an absolutely delightful discovery after a Saturday yoga class. My friends and I gave a big ol' NOPE to the two spots down the street sporting 1.5 hour waits, and we were thrilled to find Manjares so close by. It's got an excellent breakfast and lunch menu, plus breakfast is served all day! I ordered a breakfast burrito which came absolutely STUFFED with sausage, cheese, black beans, rice, scrambled eggs, cilantro, tomato, pepper and onion. I had to take half of it home it was so enormous. I also enjoyed a pastry - sort of like a cheese danish, and it was exceptional! Love the casual counter service - there's also indoor and outdoor seating. A really nice cafe!

Oh Bella's how y'all got competition, I THOUGHT Bella's took the win on brunch but this adorable little restaurant less then a block away with their comfy vibe was mint. As soon as I walked in and saw the half empty pastry window and the stand with macaroons I was in pre diabetic heaven, the food clearly has to be fire. We had a Greek omelet, a naked chicken burrito, vanilla latte, macaroons and a Snapple (lol) the people including customers are just so friendly and the adorable lady in the front is so warm and inviting she even zaps all the wasps out like a OG so keep people like me from getting a stroke. I will TOTALLY be back I enjoyed every bit of it there. 10 thumbs up y'all.

I came here one morning with the intention of originally taking my friends to the famous Bella's. When we found out there was a 45 minute wait time, we came here instead. And, boy, did we make the right choice. It's a small place, but it definitely has a community feel to it. The restaurant was being run by only 3 people that morning (one in the kitchen, one taking orders, and one making drinks) so it was a bit slow service, but they were very kind and apologetic. Pretty standard breakfast/brunch foods (I had the Paglia Pancake Breakfast Sandwich), but it's really the great Latino/Caribbean community vibe that stands out. Also, the pastries are delicious! (There's a croissant with passionfruit filling that's particularly tasty)

In a display of restaurant solidarity , they recommended that we try Vinas Wine & Tapas. As it turned out, we have a NEW favorite in New Haven! We arrived a bit early and were cheerfully greeted by Mike G, our server. The atmosphere was welcoming and relatively quiet, since their musical offering does not start as early as our 5:00-7:00 PM time slot on a Tuesday. We had asked for the waiter Christian because he had been mentioned in several of the Yelp reviews, but Mike proved that the service compliments should go to everyone. First, the tapas: We enjoyed all five of the tapas we chose. The "Calamares" were lightly battered and crispy. The Vinas salad was fresh, with tomatoes, cheese, corn, and croutons. The pork belly was delicious and more meaty than expected . The oyster mushrooms were presented with onion crisps. The baked birria empanada was stuffed with brisket style beef. Each of these "courses" was a unique delight to the palate, and for me and my partner, it was completely satisfying. In keeping with the spirit of a "wine bar," Vinas offered a flight of 4 wines in 3 ounce glasses, and after hearing about our food choices and wine preferences, Mike chose the wines for us, giving us a chance to taste some less familiar offerings. We had the Felino Malbec 2024 (Argentina), which became our favorite for its full-bodied and deep flavor. Our second wine was a unique Don Abel (private label) from Wallingford CT, made by one of the relatives of the owner, specially for Vinas. This one reminded us of the local wines one might receive in a B&B in the Loire Valley in France. The final two wines were both from Chile: Reserva Carmenere 2023 and Cabernet Sauvignon Marques de Casa Concha 2022. Both were excellent wines. It was great fun to have Mike choose the wines for us, and we really enjoyed the variety that the flight offerings gave to us. Of course, we had to try a dessert, and Mike recommended the Toffee Cake. We had heard that the owner claimed that some people cried with joy after eating it. Although we restrained ourselves, we had to agree that this was an extraordinary conclusion to a fabulous meal. Overall, this was a great experience for us, and we heartily recommend Vinas Wine Bar and Tapas for a relaxing and welcoming dinner. Some reviews I had read suggested that the portions were too small for the price. I have to disagree. My partner and I love food, and this was plenty. And the price was reasonable. Including tip and tax, we spent about $75 each.

The ceviche was excellent, everything was cooked throughout by the citrus. The portion size is small for $19 and it could have used a side of bread or tortillas to soak up the delicious citrus based broth. The skewers were also excellent. They were cooked perfectly, super tender, juicy and flavorful. They cooked them with a seasoning and had a delicious chimi on top.

Lobster bisque was hot though pretty liquid-y. The Brussels sprout salad was by no means a salad. More of a rice cake with Brussels shavings on too but really good. Calamari was okay. Mac and cheese was eh, really liquidy as well. I did really like the crispy mushroom risotto tater tots. They tasted just like tater tots. As we were getting to our last bites and still eating, at least three different staff members within a matter of a minute asked if we're were done and could take our plates away. I would have given this place four stars had we not been bombarded at the end of our dinner. It felt like we were being rushed out even though there were tons of tables and seats still available. Left a bad taste in my mouth.

Prices run a bit high, but the quality of the ingredients more than make up for it. The Jako Salad (4.5/5) is a favorite of mine. It perfectly mixes peppery arugula and crisp radish with a poached egg, fried baby anchovy, bonito flakes, and nori. The baby anchovy gives a sweet/salty crunch that tastes like my childhood. Every bite swings between fresh and umami in a really creative way. The harasu don (5/5) is pure richness in a rice bowl. Grilled salmon belly and salmon roe together are incredibly rich, almost to the edge of too much, but the warm rice underneath keeps it grounded and turns it into a perfect comfort dish. The giant octopus sashimi (4/5) is a great counterbalance, cleanly sliced with a firm, fresh bite that lightens things up. The fresh tofu with uni (5/5) might be my favorite plate. The tofu is ultra delicate, and the rich uni on top adds a briny depth. With the simple seasonings on the side, it's a savory panna cotta. If they ever did a dessert version with ginger syrup, I would be here daily. Sashimi here is excellent (5/5). You get a balanced mix of fatty cuts like otoro and leaner ones like akami, along with hamachi, katsuo, and octopus. The variety lets you move between clean and rich bites at your own pace. A side note. Every so often a piece of yamamomo shows up on the plate (small red berries), a little mountain peach that is sweet enough to outshine most desserts. It may just be a palette cleanser, but it is a personal 10/5 for me. So good! Both indoor and outdoor seating feel comfortable, and service was on point: kind, attentive, and well timed. Overall, this is a standout Japanese option that I would highly recommend if you're ever in New Haven.

Hachiroku was a highly anticipated place after being nominated for Restaurant of the Year in New…read moreHaven County for Connecticut Restaurant Association's annual Crazies awards so I had it on my list of must go to restaurants. I have also never been to a sake bar. Have to say....I was underwhelmed. We came in last Friday and apparently it was slow because Yale was off (according to our waiter). If a restaurant is good they should not be slow on a Friday night. We sat by the door on a cold night and there were two other couples practically on top of us. Rest of the seating are high tops against a wall by the bar or up the stairs on another level. We would have liked to sit upstairs but they were closing off that area. Menu was complex as the restaurant is authentic Japanese. Lots of beef options. Lots of Wagyu. I was hoping to be blown away by this restaurant trying something different. I was struggling trying to find something to order that sounded appetizing. I knew going in that this place was authentic Japanese but I don't know, nothing sounded great to me. I love mushrooms so I got the Mixed Kinoko Mushroom appetizer which was $15. To add scallops was another $8. Mushrooms were tasty. Scallops were not. $23 for a small dish. I also got the pork short ribs. Not a ton of meat on them, however, nice flavor. I was still hungry after this so I ordered a dessert which was the best part of the meal. They get some of their desserts from Hen & Heifer which is a well established place in Guilford. I got the Ube Panna cotta. Boyfriend got the Black cod Yu-an Yaki and upgraded to add the salad, pickles and rice for $3 more. The pickles were maybe two bites. Salad tasty but again, very small. He said the cod was just ok too. Very small portions and pricey for what you get. $30 for a mini sake flight. Not impressed with how it was served either. Small tasting glasses just placed on the table with no description. The server explained which was which, but I didn't remember. Not sure if he didn't care or this is how it's normally served, but if you go to a wine bar/brewery, they provide descriptions with flights usually written underneath the glass, or at least serve it in something. Not just tiny glasses placed on a table where you have no idea what you're having. Especially for $30! I was not impressed with this place whatsoever. As this is part of a newer restaurant group with a few different locations nearby in New Haven, we then went to their cocktail Lounge on crown street (116 Cocktail Bar) thinking it might be better, however we were equally disappointed. It was dead in there and the bartenders were miserable. They couldn't wait to get out of there. I have heard that their hand roll bar is very good (Handroll on State St). We have been to their Grocery Store called The Loop and it's cute. They have a brunch at the Grocery/Kitchen location that looks really good. They also have a wine lounge at The Loop that I'd like to try.
