This isn't about Guy and Mae's Tavern but about the ribs and only the ribs. We went down there to see if the ribs were still good, bought a slab sat down and couldn't stop eating till they were all gone. The sauce is different but welcoming different that we quickly warmed up to. If it wasn't such a drive we'd of went right back the following Saturday. So this place is still cranking out fall of the bone good ribs wrapped in newspaper. I only wish they were open on Sunday. read more

I grew up on Guy & Mae's ribs and sandwiches! My favorite sandwich has always been a ham and polish combo with swiss cheese! Nothing better! Then to top it off a side of cole slaw and of course if you grew up at Williamsburg (in the 90's) you know we always rip the Lays tater chip bag open and dump the BBQ SAUCE right over those chips. Arrived at 6 pm on a Saturday. Ribs were out and so we settled on a sandwich because there was not anything to choose. Worst sandwich I have eaten in a long time. Meat was dry and no flavor. Coleslaw was poor. BBQ sauce is terrible. Pickle was pretty good. Sounds like the ribs are great. Hard to believe that is all they do well. read more

Cozy, comfortable place. We've had the ribs, which are excellent, and sandwiches. The smoked sausage sandwich is our favorite. The baked beans are very good. The potato salad is creamy and good. They don't have french fries. Their sauce is the vinegary type that we don't care for so we bring our own. Still 5 stars for the skillfully cooked meats, the friendly staff and atmosphere. read more

This used to be THE place folks would drive for miles for their ribs. The legend has died. Ribs were over steamed so they are mushy. Sauce is bland, coleslaw has no flavor. Best. RIbs. Ever. I am not one to crave BBQ, but Guy and Mae's ribs are out of this world. A very basic building/tavern which is family-owned and friendly. I wouldn't waste time with anything on the menu but the ribs. I have had a few of the sandwiches and they were fine, but don't schlep all the way out here without eating ribs (and maybe ordering a slab to go) . They fall right off the bone and don't even require sauce. The BBQ beans and hot pickles are excellent as well. Just beer here at this tavern. read more

I took my girlfriend here. I thought it was just okay after hearing everyone rant and rave about them. Loved the Mayberry atmosphere. BIG, BIG drawback and the reason for the rating, here it is 2018 and this place does not take Debit or Credit Cards!!! I was told that they only take Cash or Check. Since I had neither, I was directed toward their ATM machine which charged me $3.00 for the transaction. This was always a favorite place to visit as a kid. Very family friendly and just a good group op people that have always worked here. I haven't been back in a few years and I really wanted to give 5 stars but I just couldn't. The beer is cold and the service is unmatched. However, the ribs just aren't as good as they used to be nor the sauce. The sliced turkey tasted and looks like honey turkey from the grocery store that has been put in the smoker. As for sides, order the potato salad and avoid the beans and coleslaw. read more

Sorry for all you Guy and Mae's fans out there, but I can't figure out why all the hoopla about this place. Arthur Bryant is still the King of Barbecue. We were there on Friday at noon and there were only 2 people eating there. That should have been our first warning. If it's the best place for BBQ, then why aren't the locals eating there? Good reason. It's NOT! The Tavern served me an inedible beef sandwich. Even my husband couldn't eat it. It was so dry and the edges of each super thin slice of meat was hard and it tasted old. They said the baked beans were made from scratch but they weren't as good as canned beans. The Polish sausage was way too salty and it was just as wafer thinly sliced as the beef. I couldn't tell that it was even sausage. It could have been Spam for all I know. The ribs were not as good as the ones that I got as my local Hen House grocery store that next day. (because I wanted ribs that were yummy and forget that I ever took the time to travel to Guy and Mae's.) read more

Have been here three times in the last 2 years, really liked the ribs each time. Sides are small and nothing special, but for only a dollar can't complain. Today we brought out of town guests to Williamsburg and arrived to see a line of folks waiting outside to be seated. It's quite a drive to get here from KC, but so worth it. Best ribs you will ever have, hands down. The ribs are served up on newspaper and wrapped in tin foil, so it's definitely a hole in the wall place, but that's right up my alley. The BBQ sauce is great too, not what I would normally like, it is more of a tomato base and I generally go for the sweeter sauces, but I smother the ribs with it. They have a limited menu, but I'm not sure why you would go and get anything but the ribs anyway. read more

The one time I was here was years ago when Arza Fogle was alive and joined us for lunch. It is one block away from where I grew up in the apartment above Fogle's Store. There is so much history here. I graduated from WHS, so it sad to learn the school has been moved to Pomona. The ribs are absolutely the best! It is easy to see why some regulars drive many miles to come here again and again. Small town Tavern. Nothing fancy but great service from friendly people. The food is great, the ribs outstanding, if your expecting linens and fine dining go somewhere else. If you like drinking from a canning jar and using paper towels to wipe the wonderful sauce from your face after gorging yourself on the ribs then come to Guy and Mae's. Oct.26 2019 Coming back from kc. to emporiaI had the sudden urge to grab some ribs, to go, from guy and maes. Seemed a good idea. Ribs and sauce were extremely dissappointing. The sauce was like a mixture of ketshup and salsa. Ok,so sauce doesn't matter much. The ribs were so overdone and warmed over they had turned to a tasteless mush. horrible! The ribs are darn good here. They're a bit under seasoned to my taste, but the meat and light smokiness shine through. They were also fall apart the tender if that is the way you like them. I love that they are served in foil on a newspaper "plate." This is a cool small town dive. read more

THIS PLACE WILL BLOW YOUR @#$%ING MIND!! Seriously...it is a hole in the wall everyday small town tavern with the standard 4 beer domestic tap. It is kind of a drive from anywhere and the ribs are $18 and kind of a small portion. At first I was somewhat disappointed at the size...then I reached down to tear one off and it slid off the bone and I think I lost it when I actually put it in my mouth!! I ate two slabs there and bought two to take with me and some BBQ sauce. Very limited menu, kind of a small place, but totally worth the drive!! We've been traveling to Williamsburg KS for ribs at Guy & Mae's Tavern for about 20 years. We live in the Kansas City area and I've eaten ribs from every major bbq place, and some not-so-major places, and the ribs at Guy & Mae's are my favorite. The ribs are not fatty, they are fall-off-the-bone tender, a perfect mild smoke flavor and I add the sauce, which is awesome-- I do like that control when it comes to bbq. The sides are good, and inexpensive. The atmosphere is casual and relaxing, the beer is cold and the service is always friendly. read more

Worth the drive for sure. Very tender ribs...fall off the bone style as opposed to having a little bite left in them like a competition BBQ rib. Be sure and order some spicy pickles to go with them. The sauce is not a traditional KC style but not Carolina style either...more mild and tomato with less smoke. Very good though. Super friendly staff! Save your gas and drive north 15 mins to Pomona and eat the ribs at Smokemasters. Best ribs in Kansas, bar none. Twice the size, ten times the flavor, and twice as tender. And without the watered down tomato sauce that they call BBQ sauce. No comparison, not even in the same universe. Don't believe me? You will when you eat the ribs at Smokemasters. I am truly sorry , but I have to call bullshit on these reviews. we rode over a hundred miles to get to Guy & Mae's to have barbecued ribs. I hadn't been there for probably 20 years. I remember the ribs big Smokey succulent beans were awesome BBQ flavored my mouth watered for the whole trip I couldn't wait to eat these ribs again. I have never in my life been more disappointed in any place I have ever eaten. when I opened my foil pack of ribs I was not expecting to see what I saw. what I saw was literally 3 slices of bread 1 being the heel a little itty bitty half rack of ribs the size of one slice of bread the bread was actually thicker than the ribs themselves also with these ribs I receive a small 1/4cup of beans adding to all this disappointment the food was not even hot. the menu spoke of something like a pickle on the side, apparently pickles are obsolete in this establishment. I'm sorry I had to leave 1 star I would have left no stars and I think they should be embarrassed to put out that type of food as well known as they are supposed to be. I will never return or speak of this place again and if it should be brought to light I would be happy to say don't waste your time. read more
