This was my first time and the food was pretty impressive. My husband and I went on a Saturday night around 11pm. The bouncer was nice, checked our IDs and helped us. It was pretty packed the bar was completely full and there was one table empty but it had some dirty dishes on it. We ended up standing around for a bit and then eventually sat down at the table with the dishes and a waitress came and helped us out. She was decent. We ordered a PBR and a Shirley temple. We also asked about the desserts because I had read about the fried twinkies. Those were PHENOMENAL. We got the poutine as well and it was really tasty! Kinda hot temperature wise and had a heat to it as well. The twinkies had great texture, the berry mixture served with it was perfect - not too sweet but paired great with the maple whipped cream. What a cool spot. Located just blocks from where GWAR was first conceptualized, this bar makes you feel a little bittersweet every time you visit. Adorned with concert posters and blood splattered floors, it's the ultimate metal head hangout. They even have an all punk and metal night on Sundays for all you mosh fans out there. When I first heard that richmond was gonna have a GWAR bar I was pretty excited to see what in the world it was gonna look like. I was really not disappointed! This place is awesome! Definitely something GWAR fans would be proud of. I've been here three times now and each time I've had a great experience. The wait staff are very nice and really try and make sure you are taken care of the moment you walk in. Now this place is small so space is really limited so if you go on a weekend or if they have events just know that there may not be a ton of space. Now for their food! Their food portions are huge, messy but down right delicious! I've had their meat sandwich which is there bbq pork with pork rinds, fennel slaw and hot sauce. The meat is so tender and flavorful and the hot sauce adds some great heat and kick to it. Now if you get this sandwich your side NEEDS to be the smoked potato salad. It's amazing, just thinking about it now makes me want it. I've also gotten their sailorboy sandwich and yet again delicious, huge and messy. This place really is great. Even if you aren't a fan of GWAR you should still go. You don't have to be a fan of the band to experience great food and atmosphere. Everyone that works there is great. Admittedly I am probably not Gwar Bar's demographic but it opened in my neighborhood so I thought it would be a good idea to check it out. While the theme is entertaining and well executed and the service was friendly and efficient, the food was outright awful. Considering there are stellar choices within walking distance (Saison, Perly's) there isn't any reason to subject yourself to such a sub-standard meal. I was there for brunch and ordered the Pastrami Biscuits and Gravy and based on the description was excited to get it. What came out was Pastrami that was hard on the edges (most likely prepped too early and left out), pre-made biscuits and overly salty tasteless gravy. More than forgettable, it was stomach turning. Ate here as my boyfriend and I were passing through Richmond because he's a big GWAR fan and we'd heard awesome things about it. It did not disappoint. The building was a perfect laid back dive bar. The decor was awesome, and surprisingly not cheesy. We loved the Oderus Urungus costume on display in the window. Our waitress was super nice, fast, attentive, and did a great job. The food was delicious. I had the Frank N Furt and my boyfriend had a burger (can't remember the name) that was brisket and ground chuck with bacon. The fries were delicious, too. We ordered the fried Oreos as well because we heard they were amazing, and they were. You've gotta get them if you go. The only reason I didn't give 5 starts is because of the bathrooms. I'm not a bathroom snob by any means, but the urine odor was so strong that I had to cover my face with my shirt. The urinal had caked up God knows what all over it and it was pretty gnarly. For those who need the TLDR; food is to die for. place is spotless, people are great. go there. Came here around 7:45pm on a Friday (my birthday! Wooooo!) with 7 of my friends. I did not make a reservation and we ended up waiting about 30-45 minutes for a table to open up and we drank at the bar. Unfortunately we were sat at a booth meant for 6 people max, but we made it work. So cautionary tale, if you have a large party, call ahead, or just roll with the possibility you won't have any elbow room. That said the hostess and waitress were super nice and accommodating to us and we had a fabulous time. The ambiance in here is freaking awesome. Fake blood on the floors and walls, GWAR-BQ posters, the lighting are cyclops bats. Netflix playing B-movie horror films over the bar. I loved it. Even though it's got the spooky, goth, vibe the place is amazingly clean. It's easily one of the cleanest restaurants where I've eaten. Now on to the good stuff: the food. Good lord. Their chefs rock that kitchen. We started off with two orders of tots: poutine and shroom. Both were the perfect level of salty/crispy, cheesy goodness. I probably could have just ordered nothing but variations of their tots and been perfectly happy. For my entree I ordered the chicken & waffles sandwich. It was a huge portion and so delicious I think my stomach had to clear out some unused corners to fit everything in there. I could go on and on about this sandwich. The sriracha maple glaze on the waffle, the perfectly cooked egg and bacon on top. Mmmmmmmmmmm. For my side I ordered their potato salad which was also on point, but I sadly didn't get to finish it because I was so full. One of my friends got some sort of duck nuggets that I sampled--they were amazing. I'm usually not the biggest duck fan because it's so oily, but this was cooked to perfection and tasted great. The friendliest, realest bartenders and servers in town. I work until later at night, and GWAR has always been a stop on the way home for a 'happy meal' and some totchos. Their brunch is also TO DIE FOR. It seems intimidating from the outside but once you chat with any of the bartenders or servers, you'll find that they're the most welcoming people in the city and that they're clearly having fun while they work. My wife and i were excited to go here as it isn't your typical Richmond restaraunt and heard the food was great. After going... the food was ehhh. It had potential, but some strange things going on. The fried cauliflower was great, at least the parts that were fully fried. There was a lot that had mushy batter on it, not good. I got a Franken-furter sausage which was just ok, my wife got the vegan buffalo sandwich. That had tofu instead of chicken, wife said it was ok, tasted like tofu. She got fries with hers and I got tots. They had some odd seasoing on them, not good at all. Kind of made them taste like salted dirt. We didn't even want to finish the fries or tots. The fries are dusted with some sort of barbecue seasoning and taste smoky and sweet. Delicious! The burger is huge and comes with beer battered bacon, which is a side dish of its own. The burger has delicious bacon jam that adds some moisture/sauce to the burger. I am not a GWAR or metal music fan but I liked coming here; the venue was very punk and alternative and the people are friendly. I've been here twice and plan to come many more times. read more

Went here last night and was not disappointed. Our server was really nice and friendly. I don't remember her name but she had dreadlocks and was really pretty. She was a great server. She was the perfect balance of friendly and talkative while getting our food and drinks out fast. The food was awesome. I has looked at the menu only and it all sounded good but went way past my expectations. My friend and I split the poutine for an appetizer. The fries were pretty standard but the gravy/cheese sauce on top was out of this world. I wanted to lick the plate when we were done. I ordered a burger called the "baconecutioner" and it was one of the best burgers I've ever had. It was a hand made burger not pre pressed. It had bacon, bacon aioli, beer battered bacon and a bacon jam. It was supposed to come with Gouda cheese but I asked for blu cheese instead. The burger was huge. I got it with a side of house made porkrinds. Then were crispy and seasoned well. I tried some of the collard greens ranch dressing. It was super good. They managed to get the taste of collards in with ranch. It sounds weird but it works and it's delish. The decor is exactly what I expected a bar run by members of Gwar to look like. What set it apart from other bar/restaurants in the area was how clean it was. The place was spotless. Music playlist was awesome. Punk and metal.
