Fun place! We stopped in on a Saturday evening. They were quite busy. Service was good and vibes were interesting.

My husband visited this place before I did and he and a friend really liked it. He was eager to see how I would feel about it. First off, I enjoyed the ambiance. It was clean and cozy. Music was playing but it wasn't so loud that we couldn't have real conversation. The server was helpful and kind -- and extremely attentive. My husband had the dry rub wings - garlic parm with ranch dressing. He enjoyed them very much. I had the meatloaf sandwich. which is made of seared meatloaf, topped with caramelized onions & smoked gouda cheese, served with jalapeno ketchup on texas toast. If I had to do it over again I would have the ketchup on the side and use it sparingly. It was delicious but I would have preferred slightly less ketchup on the sandwich. The sandwich over all was so tasty. I would absolutely get it again. I ordered it with mashed potatoes and gravy and they were yummy as well. True comfort food. Iced tea and the quality of it is important to me. I detest bottled tea, or tea out of a soda fountain. If it's not brewed fresh on site, I do not enjoy my meal the same way. Everything has been consistently inconsistent lately- from service to food. We didn't get our pretzels for a crazy long tonight before our to go order showed up 30 secs later. When we got home, we were very disappointed. Nashville hot chicken plate. Chicken strips not breasts were crazy overcooked and over spiced with cayenne. We love spice but this was inedible and not sauced/glazed as Nashville hot chicken should be. The Mac wasn't cheesy gooey saucy as it should be. And they managed to burn the collards. When I went to leave, I couldn't get the lock to budge. It was a sliding dead bolt lock, and it was jammed stuck. So...I was stuck in this very tiny bathroom, the size of a coat closet. So I freaked out and called out. Maybe I panicked a bit and shook the door trying to get the lock open (maybe I am claustrophobic a little). I was pushing and pulling the lock for about 5 minutes. I was putting force into it bc....it was stuck!!! Maybe I was too loud for this lively drinking establishment, even on a Friday night?????? Bc ultimately I got bitched at by some moody ass woman who cussed me out and essentially shamed me for being too loud trying to get out of their bathroom!!! She literally blamed ME for causing a scene and overreacting. I'm like what? Are you kidding? She was more concerned about ME breaking her door!!!! Or her already broke lock!!!! WTF? The whole place was looking at me as I walked out. Never in my life! I get it's a dive bar and I'm no "regular." I didn't expect anyone to apologize for having a shitty lock. I thought this place was great, I don't really understand the bad reviews. We came with our dogs and sat on the patio. It was August in the evening, so patio was roasting, but them's the breaks with dogs. The waitress was a gem, friendly and attentive. The food was excellent. I had the loaded tater tots with pulled pork. I swear the tater tots were double fried, they were perfection. My husband's Mac n cheese was delicious. We split a piece of cheesecake which I think was made in house, the crust was too delicious to be from Sysco. We will go back. read more

I've been wanting to try Sheppard Street Tavern and finally did. I was very disappointed, mostly in the service. It's in a great location and appears to be a popular neighborhood spot. Perhaps if we were locals, our server would have been more friendly. She told us how busy she was and that she would try to take care of us, which didn't bode well for our experience. They have a full-page beer and full-page wine menu. I ordered a glass of Pinot Noir...it was terrible. The bottle had clearly been open for at least a couple of weeks. I sent it back and ordered a beer instead. Then we ordered the Florentine flatbread and fries. About 25 minutes later, our server came out to tell us they didn't have one of the ingredients for the flatbread. I feel like this was way too long to let us know there was an issue with our order. We ended up with just the fries, which were good. However, when we asked for ketchup, our server seemed a bit annoyed that we asked for some. Overall, it was a disappointing experience. read more

When you start out not feeling welcome, why bother? I think another reviewer plainly put it that if you're not a local forget it. And I hate to leave a review without, disappointingly, not even trying the food!! Was very excited about the food. I research places pretty thoroughly and am always looking for dog friendly restaurants. That being said, I'm not expecting much as to where to sit and we are very conscientious about others and willing to sit outside or wherever if we have the dog with us. Preface: I thought I read that dogs were allowed inside. We walked up; the waitress was chatting with a group whom she was in deep conversation with in the outside area. They were all smoking in the small outside patio. Don't like smoking at all especially when paying to eat somewhere. I asked politely if dogs were allowed inside. They all laughed when the waitress super condescendingly said absolutely not! Haha joke's on us. She turned back to her group. Sorry we interrupted you. For all the signs at the place saying we accept everyone, everyone is welcome, we support this and that- it was clear we were none of those. Which actually, I'm glad because there are 1000 other places to eat. And we did! We went to another place that had outside seating, allowed dogs, there was no smoking, we felt welcome and the waitress was amazing! Spent $100 and enjoyed. I'm going to start with the pros because I am sure there is probably a restaurant in hell or New Jersey or somewhere that has given customers a worse experience than I had. To lend some context, I called in an order for carryout a couple hours before the Super Bowl started. Pretty simple: a dozen buffalo wings with bleu cheese and a large Caesar salad with grilled chicken. Pros: the staff got my order correct and no items were missing. They were efficient on the phone and courteous and attentive when I came in to pick up my order. Also, the lettuce/dressing/cheese components of the salad were tasty and enjoyable. Cons: the grilled chicken on the Caesar salad was barely recognizable as being either a) grilled or b) chicken. It was severely undercooked to the point of being rubbery and after one bite it went in the garbage because contracting salmonella is not high on my bucket list. Next were the wings. They were not undercooked but were actually overcooked to the point of being dry. The buffalo flavor was nowhere to be found and they tasted as though they had been lightly tossed in a generic barbecue style sauce. Summary: I would eat the salad again without any poultry accompaniment. When COVID is behind us, I will gladly visit the bar for a cold beer served by their courteous staff. If I yearn for a chicken wing while I am there, I will have Uber Eats deliver them to the front door from elsewhere. read more

Now, back to how I hurt myself, it seems Shepherd St continued the tradition of the Stupid Wing challenge, wings so hot that I'm sure they could melt lead. Yes, you have to sign a waver for this culinary torture. Now, there is just no way to describe the level of heat in these eight death wings. All I can say is that I have always prided myself as a bonafide chili head, but these super nova wings brought me to my knees. I only made it through a wing and a half before I was forced to tap out and beg my bartender Jessie for four glasses of milk. Jessie also suggested that I pick up some yogurt at 7-11 across the street. I frantically smeared the yogurt on my face, certain that I was about to sport at the very least second degree burns. If you attempt this challenge, you have my utmost respect, but I seriously think you are missing out on the best part of this pub and that is its wonderful menu. A wide choice of appetizers, sandwiches, gourmet hotdogs and burgers, or some full entrees (excellent choices!!) I got the Nutella and banana sandwich. You can get it with peanut butter and add bacon. I say add the option for spam or add it with a burger as an Elvis burger. Also getting a bowl of the original Texas Wisconsin chili. The food took over 45 minutes after we ordered to arrive. Then my one friend had a burnt omelette, and to make matters worse there was a small hair in it. I can go on and on about how rude the red-haired female server was, from the eye rolling to the "I told you I was going to bring you menus" (after we'd been waiting 20 minutes), but I'm not. I love Sheppard St Tavern, and especially during Covid. It is probably one of Richmond's best kept secrets, as every other day another trendy, style over substance, over-priced restaurant opens up (and subsequently closes not long after). The food is always, always good. I had the Eggs Benedict recently, and I think hand's down, it is the best EB I've had in Richmond, or anywhere (and I've had a lot of them). The Hollandaise was to perfection, with the perfect amount, I didn't even need the extra I ordered. The waiters are personable, and not distracted. The patio is covered, which is wonderful since I won't go into a restaurant for awhile. The location is great, just a block or two from the VMFA, so it is good for people watching. The clientele is friendly and not immersed in their technology; how refreshing is that? Love this old-school, down to earth, delicious, and reasonable spot in the Museum District. read more

Ok I have passed by here several times now and finally decided to give the tavern a try. The menu does try to offer items other than just having the old standards. I got chili as an appetizer with fresh jalapeños, it was uniquely spiced and not very hot. I kind of expected it to be hot looking at the menu. They offer several items spiced up, particularly their fries, you can get them dusted with ghost peppers. I like things hot but I do not want to ghost peppers "dusted" on anything. For lunch I ordered the New York strip sub, with jalapeños and blue cheese. It wasn't too bad but it was missing some kind of sauce to bond the blue cheese and the steak together. The steak was cooked medium rare, they actually asked me how I wanted it. I've never had anyone ask me how I wanted my sliced steak cooked on a sub. So I give them a thumbs up for that. The service the bartender gave me was great, the middle of the week for lunch is a great time to go there it is not too busy. We have a pretty diverse menu I will go back and try something completely different next time. read more

What a shit show. The waitress brought my boyfriend his check after he had already paid. When he told her he already paid, she basically just told him no... so we pulled up the charge on his bank app to show her the charge. She still denied this and tried saying he had ordered more drinks (he didn't). She then took it to the bartender/manager (not sure who he was)... so I walked up to show him the charge in a very non-confrontational manner and he immediately got very defensive and kept taking the waitresses side although I'm literally showing this dude the charge on the phone. He was being a straight dick to me and I ended up walking out. In the end, they charged my boyfriend twice but this morning it looks like they removed one of the charges... so I guess they realized they actually were wrong, lol. Worst customer service ever. What a delightful surprise! I stopped in after a long day at work for dinner on a chilly night. Although it's a tavern, I decided to take a chance on one of their entrees, rather than a burger or pub food. I settled on the pork chop served over nicely seasoned greens and creamy grits. Delicious! The place was nearly empty so it was quiet and I got great service. Pork chop was glazed with a savory bourbon sauce and plenty of black pepper. I suppose this would be your typical bar. I found nothing special about this place. Has the generic music, the broad choices of draft beer, and a menu filled with the generic "bar foods". There weren't much seating options inside, so it wasn't a big establishment, but more of a cozy places for friends to hang out, grab a beer and talk. The parking has to be street parking, which can get difficult at times depending on the hour you go. The bathroom is very tiny and wasn't that clean. The staff there were very friendly though. I had a large group go in and the waitress accommodated all of us really well. She even moved us to a bigger table without any hassle. She was friendly to offer suggestions on what's popular on the menu since we were all new to town. The food was decent. We got the grilled cat fish, wings, and fries. Not sure if it was suppose to be finger food or not, but we didn't receive any utensils. Anyways, this place isn't a bad place to go casually hang out with friends.
