This review is for the lodge. Warning... if you are one bit bougie, staying at Gwin's Lodge is not for you. After easy check-in, we went to our cabin and was greeted with dirty spatula on the porch. Not a good sign, but we remained hopeful. However, as we entered the cute little cabin, we saw dead bugs on the window sill, the shower curtain was wet from the previous occupants, and the couch was stained & dirty. As two women travelling, what concerned us most was the various 'characters' walking throughout the property, who we think were either fisherman or workers from the local outfitters. Not the wholesome environment we thought Gwin's Lodge would offer. For pros, the bed was comfy and the front desk was friendly. I can see how the lodge would be good enough for some guests. Sad to say, I'm not one of them. I got through the night pretending I was camping and left early the next morning. Other than above, the roadhouse restaurant is well worth the food stop and the gift/gear shop is stocked with all you'll need for your stay in Cooper Landing. read more

The folks here are incredibly kind! Our van broke down and they allowed us to leave it there overnight. And the next afternoon, when I arrived with a trailer to haul the van away, the owner spent about an hour helping me to get it safety loaded and chained down (he pretty much did most of it for me!). This was above and beyond: I wasn't even a customer! But I will for sure be stopping at their restaurant on future trips through Cooper Landing. The are a number of nice cabins tucked away behind the main buildings towards the mountain- super nice set-up and I look forward to recommending it to folks traveling to the Kenai Peninsula! Our family (Daughter, sons and 2 grandkids) just returned from a fishing vacation from July 11th-20th and stayed at Gwin's Lodge-Roadhouse in Cooper Landing Alaska. We rented the lower-level Alder cottage and everything was in excellent shape and very clean and well organized. We had eight in our party and it really allowed us to have enough space to be comfortable. The only slight negative was the living room and one bedroom are affected by the occasional upper cottage ceiling noise but we understood that when we booked so not a complaint. We found the store counter staff to be friendly and customer focused especially when we asked for more towels and toiletries. In addition the on-site restaurant offered excellent menu items and was very convenient after a long day of sockeye fishing. The restaurant staff were also friendly and accommodating especially with our multiple item "to-go" orders. In closing we would highly recommend this location as a base camp for fishing or other adventures. read more

The only reason why I'm giving this place one star is because they charged us a $50 cleaning fee for beer cans that were left underneath the bed THAT WEREN'T OURS! My friend who booked this place received notice of an extra fee on his bill and decided to call back (since we had already left Alaska) and it was because the cleaning staff found empty beer cans underneath the bed. Ok so, 1. The beer cans weren't ours 2. Housekeeping obviously didn't clean well enough to look underneath the beds BEFOREHAND and it should've been found if they had been cleaned properly!!!!! 3. Makes me question how well OR if they even do a thorough job of cleaning the lodge once used by other guests. 4. It's not our responsibility to clean up a mess that was left by previous guests!!! 5. All four of us who stayed there do not drink!!! 6. And if we did, we would've cleaned up after ourselves. I mean duh. I wouldn't come back here just for those reasons, but you're very limited to your options of places to stay in the area. But I highly suggest other accommodations if possible. read more

Gwins, Love this place. I have never had worst customer service until July 4 2018. My group and I stopped in on our way to home to Anchorage to get some good eats due to us eating chips,candy and other stuff that's not a meal. 3 of us walked in as our other party was already at a table. I did not get a Hello but got a "We are completely full" OKAY I see that you are full. Where is the NORMAL HELLO. After about 2 min we just sat our selves on the bar because seats were available. A server came over to get some beer for a guest and i just asked him " Can we order some drinks" and his response was " Cant you see that we have a full restaurant and there is only 2 servers serving this whole restaurant" EXCUSEEEEEE MEE, yes i do see that the restaurant is full and HELL you gonna talk to me like i am an inconvenience. I Guess my $74 dollars i paid for 3 meals was an inconvenience. I understand that Gwins is in the middle of basically no where and staffing is hard especially on a holiday when everyone in the world wants to stop and eat. Please train your staff to know it is ok to be busy but never forget that a simple hello and someone will be with you really goes a long way when you have to wait forever. All i do is rave about Gwins and after my experience its hard to do that because i don't want someone else to experience what I had. Overall the food is amazing and this review is not to knock the food its to mention to travelers that if you decide to go to Gwin's when its Busy which is basically all summer have the patients to wait and also the attitude from the servers. Awesome food Worst customer service. We also took our group to the patio to have our food, that was a mistake, We only got service once after our food was brought out to us, and when I asked if i could get a refill on my Coke my server rolled his eyes, REALLLLLLYYYYYY dude. It took almost 30 min for our server to charge my card, i stood at the bar in front of where the food is ready to be taken to guest, I watched Ryan i think that's his name touch is nose grab some food and take it to a guest. After i that i watched him grab a bowl of chowder took it to a guest went back to get a second bowl and watched him take it to the same guest table and they said " oh no we already got it we only needed one bowl" What did Ryan do with the BOWL, Took the bowl back to the pot and dumped it right back in. Ummmmmmmm that bowl touched the woman's fingers why in the world would you pour back into the pot. My review is to make a point that we all live for great customer service and if we don't get it we speak, we speak to others about what we think and what kind of experience we get from any place we spend money at. I am not out here to get free food or money back, I'm here to write this review to make it a better experience for everyone that comes across this wonderful place to have a great meal. I liked the food but the service was horrible. It was a busy day and my group and I understood that it would take longer than usual to be helped but once we walked in the door we were greeted with "we don't have a table for you" instead of a hello. I thought maybe he was just stressed, and several of us have eaten there before, so we waited patiently and decided to eat outside Instead since it was open. After we got our food, the only extra service we asked for was a refill on 3 drinks and the waiter rolled his eyes and took a big breath because we asked. After we were done eating we waited for 30 minutes for our check and when we told him we would be splitting it two ways he gave us a look as if we have inconvenienced him once again. He left to give us time to pull out our payment methods and left us waiting for another 25-30 minutes so we took the checks inside because we needed to get on the road. When we got inside we saw our server helping other tables so we waited until he had the time to cash us out. We stood there for another 20 minutes, as the server ignored making eye contact with us because he was helping others. By this time it has been an hour since we had been done eating, and we were upset that we were repeatedly being ignored. We didn't get one "I'll be with you shortly" After finally being helped, we decided not to tip on the card because he clearly did not like helping us and we didn't have a good experience. We left the only cash we had on the table and went across the lot to get coffee. While we were getting the coffee somehow the waiter had the time to approach us and gave us back the cash we had and said "keep your money." read more

So you have just finished a hard day of fishing on the Kenai River. Being too tuckered to cook, what do you do? Go to Gwin's. Definitely a hamburger joint, they also serve good seafood standards. The smoked salmon chowder is beyond awesome. Gwin's also has a latte stand and store I frequent. The latte's are top notch, the store adequately stocked for those in need for outdoor provisions (plus fishing gear). Gwin's also offers a river guide service, saltwater charter service, lodging, and fish freezer, none of which I have ever used, but I would expect a solid performance from these services as well. read more

Gwins lodge came recommended by locals on the kenai peninsula and over all we enjoyed our awesome little cabin and i would recommend it to all ! How ever after reading reviews about the food we decided to eat there and the food was amazing ! Bartender on the other hand was horrible , it seemed like locals hr with the staff and friend talking about parting at the cabin after they close and very slow service ! Finally at one point I had to go find my own salt and pepper because they were all busy socializing and or on there cell phones. Took over 5 min to ask about gravy choices as well . I've been in the service industry for 16 yrs and was very disappointed in the bar staff ! Beautiful place with tons of history right on the beautiful kenai river ! read more

I stayed at gwins about a week ago, in cabin #15, what looked like an original cabin from when the Lodge was built in the 1950's. The lot is very camping-like, giving a good naturey environment. Our cabin was gigantic, which was really nice, and dated from the 50's. Unfortunately, we had some insect issues in this old cabin, and upon posting on yelp and receiving a reply from the manager (there was no card in the room informing us of whom to contact in case of issue), I was assured all problems would be fixed if I could provide proof of my claims. Although I would have greatly appreciated a kinder initial response and an offer to tear apart our cabin in search of said bugs without having to see a doctor to provide proof, once I did, the manager at Gwin's was very courteous and helpful in personally inspecting the issue and questioning staff as to if they had noticed the problem, as well, assuring me all would be repaired. I'm sure Gwin's Lodge is a great place to stay if you are situated in a recently-rennovated or new cabin (about half of the cabins looked like they slept 2-3 and were brand new), akin to somewhere I've stayed in Lake Tahoe, CA, but I'd recommend steering clear of the lodge if you cannot stay in a new or recently-remodeled cabin, due to concerning bug issues with an outdated cabin and the time potential for problems. Be sure to check on that before accepting a booking. read more

Fun lodge in perfect Cooper Landing. The place to be for a meal or a game after an exciting day fishing. I base my five stars on the area, not comparing it to the Ritz. I live on the lower Peninsula and stay here occasionally for a getaway. Nice people, clean rooms. (id like to address the "insect issue"..in Alaska we have a tiny mosquito that we call no-see-ums that is barely visible and a silent killer! They sneak in when you enter the room and eat you alive in your sleep..kinda:) read more
