There is a shuttle service to take guests to and from the main lodge to their rooms. Even though it was the middle of summer, we wanted to be able to have a fire in the fireplace. There was plenty of cut wood for the stove and they even provided fire starter. There was a nice trail behind the main lodge building that goes down in a bit of a slope. Have no fear; they provide walking sticks you can borrow. There are two restaurants on site, and reservations are recommended. The gift shop in front of the lodge office has lots of souvenir items.

Tom had the patience of a saint while we learned, was an excellent teacher, and knew every inch of that river: where to go to go for a hit, what bait to use, the technique for that specific spot -- it was absolutely unreal. Tried to call again in hotel phone, 45 minutes without answer. Called maint to the room, took over 10 minutes, maint guy showed up, and said "Something IS wrong"...not a good sign. We are told to call the front desk to change room temperatures...except no one answers the call! What a brilliant concept! ===========*=* Mick came down, told the front desk and us that it is now working, we went up to the room, it is again not working. Mick looked at the room thermostat panel and said "you can just press here (up/down arrow for temperature control) ... not sure why it's not working" So the 'secret method' the front desk mentioned is...press the buttons on the wall thermostat? ------------------ Another 20 minutes, and they can't find a room where the in-room thermostat control is working? I never knew this is the Taj Mahal where it will take days to go through the rooms ? ------------- For a place that is understaffed, they sure got securities available to intimidate customers ---------- Another update: director of rooms stopped by, because the person at the front desk Ozzie (?) does not have authority to do anything. Of course, she isn't happy with the fact that she has to come in her time off to handle a situation that took more than 2 hours that Ozzie can't handle. She said Ozzie said he gave us several options of different rooms, while in reality, Ozzie had only sent us back to the same room with the defective heating (507). Hard to deal with someone in the 'hospitality business that lies. Ozzie mentioned during this of an upgrade, but never actually offered an upgrade to us. Quite a pity they have to rely on the word of a dishonest employee over that of a customer and actions of their own maintenance crew. --------- This place is sad when they can't staff the hotel properly, yet have plenty of security around to keep an eye on us. Perhaps go check on the room for Ozzie would've been the better use of their time

Have been coming to this place for years now, when passing. It's iconic looking, a very large log…read morecabin styled building from the exterior, nestled back from the road, amid mountains, and next to Summit Lake. There are also cabins to rent and suites. Over the years, there have been changes, but the dining room for the most part remains the same. Big light and airy space, with massive picture windows looking out over Summit Lake, and it's a beautiful view. There's a cosy seating area right at the entrance with comfy couches to relax on. If you can get a window seat, it's well worth it. Swallows swerve by the window with mere inches to spare, catching insects on the wing, it's quite a sight while you wait for your food. It has a rustic, log cabin Alaskan feel, but the napkins are fabric, the glassware is nice, and servers are in uniform. The menu is hard backed so it feels sophisticated. I ordered coconut shrimp from the appetizers menu, which came with some kind of special dipping sauce, and I got some French fries on the side. Husband ordered the Garbage Grinder burger and a salad. The shrimp were ok, nothing special, the dipping sauce was based on orange marmalade - I didn't enjoy that at all. The fries were ok. His Garbage Grinder burger was insurmountable in the state it is presented, there is no way a normal person can fit that in their mouth. It must be 6/7 inches high. He had to remove some items to make it thin enough to get it in. Whilst I was eating, a couple were seated on the table behind us. I didn't think my chair was sticking out that far, but this woman, when being seated, kept whacking her chair into mine, forcing me to push my chair in really tightly, which I thought it was rude and inconsiderate, as a normal person would say "excuse me, could you pull your hair in a little" but she just kept battering my chair with hers until I moved. We were obviously in very close proximity, and I heard them say they were tourists, from out of state and had just got married, and would they comp the meal? This was prior to even ordering, and not because anything was wrong with the meal, just merely because they had a strong sense of rude entitlement. You got married, why are you entitled to a free dinner? It was irritating. But obviously not the fault of Summit Lake Lodge. Anyway the server promised to ask her manager. (Who refused to comp the meal, but did offer a discount) Anyway, it's a beautiful place, in a beautiful location, you're paying for an experience, not just the food - which is slightly above average. The service is impeccable, the views are stunning, and an influencer's dream. The menu used to have a lot more items on it, simpler things - I had my first ever Reuben here years ago and it was amazing, but you can't get it anymore. It seems to change annually. Anyway, it's definitely worth stopping in.

However, as we entered the cute little cabin, we saw dead bugs on the window sill, the shower curtain was wet from the previous occupants, and the couch was stained & dirty. As two women travelling, what concerned us most was the various 'characters' walking throughout the property, who we think were either fisherman or workers from the local outfitters. Not the wholesome environment we thought Gwin's Lodge would offer. For pros, the bed was comfy and the front desk was friendly. I can see how the lodge would be good enough for some guests. Sad to say, I'm not one of them. I got through the night pretending I was camping and left early the next morning. Other than above, the roadhouse restaurant is well worth the food stop and the gift/gear shop is stocked with all you'll need for your stay in Cooper Landing.

I enjoyed looking at the tall spruce trees outside the 2nd floor window. Mountains soar from the front and back yards. It's a beautiful location. My room was decorated with a picture of the Portland (Maine) Head light made from puzzle on wall. The building has a community lounge with TV & movies. No in-room television. It felt more like a motel than a Bed and Breakfast. Less personal, less intimate. Breakfast as in a Best Western - self-serve bowls of HB eggs, bagels & packets of cream cheese, small boxes of cereals, bowl of bananas, apples; etc - a few muffins. Nothing homemade. If I'm in the area again, I'd probably stay there again. It is was a good value for the price and especially for Alaska. $85. Visa & Master Card only. No American Express.
