When we visit the Big Island of Hawaii one of the treats we look forward to is to stop at least once (last trip was twice) at Gypsea Gelato. Their shop along Mamalahoa Hwy is a perfect stop after snorkeling in Kealakekua or Honolulu Bay (or visiting the Place of Refuge). They have a great selection of Gelato flavors, freshly made. They also have some hand made pastries at this location. There's a decent sized dining room if it's raining, but we enjoy eating our Gelato out back while viewing the beautiful flowers. We've also visited their other location in the Coconut Grove Marketplace in Kailua-Kona town. A great, refreshing treat that we look forward to each trip to Hawaii.

The art was absolutely to die for!! I got the coffee gelato and it was so creamy and delicious. The vibe is everything and the area was extremely walkable. There's parking right out front as well.

Tom kha and chocolate orange gelato

Beautiful, delicious gelato. We all had two flavors in our cups, so 10 flavors. And I LOVED them. I ordered the Tom Kha and chocolate orange...two striking flavors with a wild balance. The spicy, gingery bright tom kha was so lovely, and the chocolate orange is so creamy and smooth. My only bummer about this place is that the toasted coconut was not available...so I guess I'll have to come back. Great service, beautiful shop.

I just lost my cat, and I went to this random gelato place and the staff really made my day. Good gelato, good people, go check it out. Idk about the Waimea location, I've heard mid things, but the Waikoloa one is killer.

The husband and I stopped here on a whim after a morning snorkel adventure at 2-Step Beach. The gelato was incredible! Light and creamy without being heavy. The passionfruit flavor was bright without being too tart or sour and the Just Dark Chocolate was just as good! Totally should have added bits of the waffle cone to mine but I didn't think about it until after I was eating it lol

Friendly service here and spacious seating along with some outdoor seating in front and in back at times After a couple teaspoons, I went with a mix of vanilla and Lily Koi (passionfruit) while my wife had the Tom Kha gelato. The ladder has really good flavor that she really liked. It's not just for soup anymore :-) The vanilla flavor is really good here and so is the passionfruit Really glad to have made this discovery. On our way back from the house of refuge.

Solid gelato! Cute little spot right off the side of the road. Pistachio - excellent pistachio flavor with pistachio flecks. 5 stars! Dark chocolate - nice creamy dark chocolate. 5 stars. Tahitian vanilla - strong vanilla, exactly what you want in a vanilla. 5 stars. Mauka trail - best value with lots of big Mac nuts, tasty coffee flavor and chocolate pieces. 5 stars! Vegan chocolate - only non dairy flavor offered and was pretty disappointing - kinda icy and a little chalky. 2 stars. Maybe their other shops offer other non dairy flavors. The outside play area was perfect for the kiddo. Definitely recommended for a sweet spot for the fam.

Amazing Gelato, coconut haystack was absolutely delicious, so was Makua Trail. They let you sample and add flavors even to a mini! They also have dairy free, my son got banana sorbet and Oreo, yummy! And get this there's a dog from up the hill who wanders in and they give him a little sample

Such a cute little pit stop for refreshingly delicious gelato! I'm glad I saw the sign and made a stop! The inside is spacious friendly space with wooden furnitures and display of gorgeous gelato and baked goods. There are a lot of sizes... I got a large but they're super generous with serving. I had salted caramel and Kona coffee with extra caramel sauce My daughter had strawberry lilikoi and lilikoi passion fruit. They were all so, so good!!

    Do you have Dole Whip?

    Is this place vegan friendly?

Hello, and thanks for your question. Gypsea Gelato IS vegan friendly! We always have at least two sorbets in the display case. There are always pre-packaged pints in the freezer, too. We use an almond milk base for those. Aloha!

Their customer service reply really made up for the previous experience with their staff and they ensured me they would address the issue with their team. :) Old review: I visited the Gypsea Gelato in Kona today and was extremely disappointed with the service. I ordered a single scoop child's cone and was told "We only have our Ube waffle cones, we are out of the rest... but don't worry they don't really taste like ube". I said ok, that should be fine since my daughter wants a cone. When I get to the register, after they had already filled her cone, I was told the price was $8.50 for the child's size ice cream and charged an additional $3 for their "specialty cone". Prior to choosing the cone, I was not told anything about it costing $3 additional dollars. Nor that a kids size scoop for that cone would be $8.50 when it should usually be $4.99. So I paid $11.50 for a child's ice cream. When I brought my concern up to the 3 teenagers working there, they all made me feel as though I was in the wrong for not knowing my child's cone would be $11.50. One of the staff checked to see if there was a price on the front of the sample cone thinking she could rub that in my face but there was no price shared. So, I had literally no way of knowing how much I would end up paying until it was too late and no apology or kindness was shown whatsoever. Another staff member said "we aren't in charge of what they give us"... and to that I say, that doesn't absolve you from sharing the price of this speciality option -which again, was the only cone option offered. Had I known I would be paying $11.50 for a child's cone, we would have happily ordered the $4.99 cup. I'd appreciate if the manager would get in touch with me -not so much for the outrageous cost but more for the fact that their staff provided such poor service in not sharing the price, and not trying to kindly resolve the issue.

They're very short and clipped, which I get because there were quite a few people in line, but when we went back up to ask a question, they were not willing to help until we (overtly and somewhat rudely) had to flag them down. Now, it seems like whoever is pouring the syrup is REALLY inconsistent. My shave ice was perfect. Well doused through and through without pooling in the bottom. However my mom's coconut was literally made with maybe a tablespoon of syrup. 80% of the entire ice had no flavor at all, and when we asked about it, they were quite rude saying "you can see some right here". So for that, you're kinda rolling the dice, I suppose. If it's close by, might be worth a shot, but I'd caution driving here form further away since it seems like you don't really know what you'll get. They also charge $0.52 for an extra empty cup, which seems a little chinsy to me.

We love this place…read more We were so happy to discover they have Ululani's here in Kona. We have gone to the one in Maui (Ululani's in Sugar Beach) for years. Our go-to is the mac-nut ice cream, with passion fruit and mango syrup topped with a snow cap (condensed milk). The ice is powdery, and the syrup is absolutely perfect! We also like the Ube ice cream, so we sometimes get a scoop of it. Parking can be a little difficult, but if you want (in my opinion) the best shaved ice, walking a bit is fine. The workers are friendly and they will explain to you what and how you can put together the perfect shaved ice. The best way to get here is through the ABC Store. Go in through the front door and exit the back door. You will enter a hallway that leads to the hotel's pool. It will be on the left side. 100% recommend!!!
