The ice cream here is out of this world and so is the view! The coffee is real good too!

If you're looking for amazing customer service this is not the place. But the shaved ice was ok, not anything overwhelmingly good or bad.

Service was terrible. Food was terrible. Don't ever get shaved ice here, was just like having crushed ice. Coffee was not good either.

Their customer service reply really made up for the previous experience with their staff and they ensured me they would address the issue with their team. :) Old review: I visited the Gypsea Gelato in Kona today and was extremely disappointed with the service. I ordered a single scoop child's cone and was told "We only have our Ube waffle cones, we are out of the rest... but don't worry they don't really taste like ube". I said ok, that should be fine since my daughter wants a cone. When I get to the register, after they had already filled her cone, I was told the price was $8.50 for the child's size ice cream and charged an additional $3 for their "specialty cone". Prior to choosing the cone, I was not told anything about it costing $3 additional dollars. Nor that a kids size scoop for that cone would be $8.50 when it should usually be $4.99. So I paid $11.50 for a child's ice cream. When I brought my concern up to the 3 teenagers working there, they all made me feel as though I was in the wrong for not knowing my child's cone would be $11.50. One of the staff checked to see if there was a price on the front of the sample cone thinking she could rub that in my face but there was no price shared. So, I had literally no way of knowing how much I would end up paying until it was too late and no apology or kindness was shown whatsoever. Another staff member said "we aren't in charge of what they give us"... and to that I say, that doesn't absolve you from sharing the price of this speciality option -which again, was the only cone option offered. Had I known I would be paying $11.50 for a child's cone, we would have happily ordered the $4.99 cup. I'd appreciate if the manager would get in touch with me -not so much for the outrageous cost but more for the fact that their staff provided such poor service in not sharing the price, and not trying to kindly resolve the issue.

Came back a few more times since it's so good and their lattes are very consistent! We also tried their vegan chocolate croissant. They helped us warm up the croissant, but it was still cold on the inside (the chocolate filling and bottom side of the pastry). That was a bit disappointing, but it still tasted good and probably would have been even better thoroughly warmed! (The ice cream is NOT vegan for those wondering if it's vegan ice cream. We inquired since they don't serve cow milk in their coffees, so we thought maybe their ice cream was so vegan.)

The service was essentially nonexistent, yet I still left a tip for simply handing me the bowl. I mentioned that we were kamaʻāina, but the employee had difficulty communicating and made it seem as though he had applied the discount. After paying and asking for the receipt, I realized that no discount had been given. He then told me, "I think the kamaʻāina discount only applies to people who live on this island." I replied, "You're definitely not from here." He said " Yes" It's a joke.

They claim the fruit is fresh and local but who knows how fresh it really is since it's frozen. The finished product is soft ice cream with icy chips of fruit throughout. I wasn't a fan. I based on the good reviews, I was really excited but this was a big miss in my opinion. I tried both the guava and the passion fruit and I preferred the passionfruit as it was less icy. Also at the bottom of the cup there's fruit flavor from the previous person as they use the same mixer over again so there are remnants from the previous customer's fruit in yours. The man working was super friendly so that's why this gets two stars instead of one star but this was a disappointment.

I guess I should have researched more thoroughly, but I wasn't sure if this place just had a small selection of vegan ice cream flavors available for the dairy-free crowd or if there was more to it. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the companies that make an effort (big or small) to accommodate for people with special dietary restrictions, but sometimes I also want more than the usual fruit sorbets or vegan chocolate flavor I usually come across. I would have been low-key disappointed if the only vegan-friendly flavor they had was coconut. So I have to say that when my partner and I decided to give this place a try after all, it had surpassed my expectations! They have two ice cream bases you can choose from - sweet cream (dairy) and coconut gelato (vegan). And they have three different sizes you can choose from. We went with Scoopah Doopa since my partner and I shared. Then you can choose 1-2 fruits which ends up being your flavor. I thought the fruits were going to be toppings, but they actually mix it all in together with the base so that you get a delicious, fruity, creamy ice cream! Flavor wise, we went with Soursop and Jaboticaba. Pretty new flavors to me, but they mixed deliciously well. The ice cream didn't come out to sweet and I'm contemplating on giving some of the other flavors a try while I'm here. What a treat! Service was really friendly as well. I highly recommend you give this place a try!
