I am editing my previous review because the response to my complaint from the managers was incredible. Their customer service reply really made up for the previous experience with their staff and they ensured me they would address the issue with their team. :) Old review: I visited the Gypsea Gelato in Kona today and was extremely disappointed with the service. I ordered a single scoop child's cone and was told "We only have our Ube waffle cones, we are out of the rest... but don't worry they don't really taste like ube". I said ok, that should be fine since my daughter wants a cone. When I get to the register, after they had already filled her cone, I was told the price was $8.50 for the child's size ice cream and charged an additional $3 for their "specialty cone". Prior to choosing the cone, I was not told anything about it costing $3 additional dollars. Nor that a kids size scoop for that cone would be $8.50 when it should usually be $4.99. So I paid $11.50 for a child's ice cream. When I brought my concern up to the 3 teenagers working there, they all made me feel as though I was in the wrong for not knowing my child's cone would be $11.50. One of the staff checked to see if there was a price on the front of the sample cone thinking she could rub that in my face but there was no price shared. So, I had literally no way of knowing how much I would end up paying until it was too late and no apology or kindness was shown whatsoever. Another staff member said "we aren't in charge of what they give us"... and to that I say, that doesn't absolve you from sharing the price of this speciality option -which again, was the only cone option offered. Had I known I would be paying $11.50 for a child's cone, we would have happily ordered the $4.99 cup. I'd appreciate if the manager would get in touch with me -not so much for the outrageous cost but more for the fact that their staff provided such poor service in not sharing the price, and not trying to kindly resolve the issue. read more

There was a long line when we got here after dinner. This is a gelato store I would recommend as they have many unique flavors that I haven't had elsewhere. Once such flavor is the Thai flavor of "Tom Kha". We did a taste test and it had flavors of turmeric, coconut, and lemongrass. But it wasn't something i prefer in gelato. Their ice cream servings are AMAZING they overflow the cup like a fountain. They allow TWO different flavors for the small sizes and THREE different flavors for the larger cups. Yum! Stopped here for a bite of gelato after lunch and every flavor was just amazing. We loved the ability to get a tiny cup of gelato since it was just lunch. My son declared that his stomach hurt as soon as we walked in so I said we'd get his to go and the kind women behind the counter helped me figure that out. It's a cute shop with great flavors. It takes skill to take turmeric, ginger and all that spice and make a delicious dessert. The price is high when you first look at the cup size from small to large, but your eyes will always be bigger than your stomach here. The flavors are super rich and are packed with the add-ins. Located in the coconut groove center in the heart of Kona. Parking is right outside and an easy in and out. Plenty of seating both inside and out. Most nights music is being played live from the surrounding establishments so it would make for a great after dinner treat on a date to just sit, listen to music, look at the ocean and talk. We stopped by here last night and WOW, the mauka trail flavor is amazing and my new go to! Perfect if you're craving a strong coffee/chocolate flavor with crunchy chocolate and chips and mac nuts!! I've also tried the Oreo flavor (earlier the same day ...) and was also delicious. Parking was in the back, there's two lots- one for coconut grove and one for Ali'i marketplace. Both are managed by Parklinq. Gypsea gelato is in the coconut grove lot. Parking is free for 90 min with validation, if you check in on the tablet in the store (don't pay online first, just remember your license plate)! We accidentally parked in the Ali'i marketplace but we were in and out and didn't get any tickets or notices. Servers were both very friendly and you can sample any of the flavors. Tasted some different flavors of the gelato, they have quite a variety. The blood orange was light and refreshing. The vanilla and passion fruit were also refreshing. Interesting place for gelato. I tried the not-so-common flavor of Tom Kha, and it was quite coconut-y with lemongrass flavor. It was an acquired taste for sure. I opted to get a scoop of the hiatian vanilla and a scoop of mauka trail, which were quite mainstream flavors. As someone who limits (and should really cut out) their dairy intake, I loved this dairy-free gelato. It was smooth and still had the texture of gelato. The dairy-free strawberry elderflower gelato made with macadamia nut milk was like a floral strawberry milky candy. It actually reminded me of the Japanese candy, 'Milky' made by Fujiya in the strawberry flavor. The other dairy-free options were their sorbets -- strawberry lilikoi (passion fruit) or banana. My partner got the chocolate covered graham cracker gelato and it reminded him of s'mores. It had chunks of chocolate covered graham crackers mixed into a plain base. He said it was rich while still being enjoyable to eat. I'm glad you are allowed to sample 2 flavors before choosing your flavor. The workers were very friendly and happy to help us decide on what flavor to get. They mentioned that the dairy-free flavors switch out every 3-4 days and each pan is a different flavor so that's pretty cool! I'm very excited to make this a regular spot. They also have pints to-go so I'm definitely checking out those the next time we go! Parking is free (for 2 hours) with a Hawaii State ID aka for kama'āina so I hope more locals consider checking this place out! There are a few chairs and tables right outside the shop (none inside). This is the first time me and my family ventured to Hawaii. Hawaii is well known for their shaved ice, but the ice cream or gelato is just as great. Gypsea Gelato is a chain of gelato shops in Kona, HI. This location has limited indoor seating and it's packed into a small shopping district, next to a beach. The staff are nice and let you take free samples before you order. You can even have two different scoops of gelato in one cup! Gypsea also sells Kona coffee packets and their own caramel sauce in a jar. Gypsea Gelato have a variety of classic and unusual flavors. You're only allowed to pay with card. They serve one group at a time, so you'll need to be patient while in line. I'd still recommend Gypsea Gelato to everyone I know. read more

Parking at this mall is a rip off, super overpriced. I wouldn't bother stopping at this location as there is another Gypsea location that doesn't charge an arm and a leg for parking. If you have a car and can't find street parking, I would recommend you skip here. They only allow one group at a time in the store which is extremely inefficient. Especially because the list of flavors the have outside are not the same as the ones inside so once you are finally allowed into the store, you have to re decide what you actually want to sample and order. The two workers inside are a little bit slow and inefficient. The gelato itself is good and they have different flavors, including Tom kha which was really interesting to taste but I didnt ultimately like enough to order. However they need to turn their freezer case down a few degrees, because all the flavors are way too soft, it was almost like soft serve and was a melty drippy mess everywhere. By the time I paid and exited the store, the ice cream was already dripping down the edge of cup and all over my hand. read more

One group is allowed in at a time, and they offer a couple of samples for you to try. I got the coconut haystack and kona coffee, both of which were spectacular. The kona coffee had quite a strong and good coffee flavor that was also pretty unique to other coffee flavored gelatos I've had. My favorite of the two was the coconut haystack though - the coconut flavor came through well and the chocolate pieces inside were plentiful and crunchy and so delicious. It's a small shop hidden a bit but still in a very convenient location next to several dinner options! The staff were very friendly in helping us make a selection. I will note they have many savory flavors here but more limited in fruity flavors. Despite that, I got the two sorbet flavors. Notably and pleasantly, they tasted true to the fruit! I was initially searching for a shave ice place on my Yelp app, and somehow stumbled upon this gelato place instead. With all the 5 star reviews, I thought it was too good to pass up! They're located in the Coconut Grove Marketplace with plenty of parking available in the back, unless you arrive during peak hours. They're right near ABC Stores and Laverne's. The one thing I liked about this place is that you can select 2 flavors no matter what size you choose. Speaking of sizes, they have 5 different ones, from mini to extra large. I chose the small for $5.99 and selected the Kona Coffee and Mauka Trail flavors. The Mauka Trail consists of Coffee and Chocolate Base with Chocolate Drizzle and Macadamia Nuts. The gelato was very creamy and flavorful. Not the best I've ever had, but I've been to Italy several times so I'm comparing it to that. Service was good. I was the only customer in the shop and there were two girls behind the counter who were attentive. They have two benches outside of their store where you can sit and enjoy your treat.
