Covington, KY is a super cool place - who knew? After a rough morning in that city across the river, I walked across the imitation Brooklyn Bridge into Kentucky, and walked over here looking for a place to decompress. Mind you, this is about 1PM on a Thursday, so not everything was going to be open. But Gypsy's was. Naturally it wasn't super busy at the time, just the bartender and two lovers on the back patio, but it was chill, and the drafts were working, and there was sports on television, and nobody to concern troll me. I only wish this place were closer to California. read more

Bartender was super nice. He got our drinks quick. We came and only got a beer. The bar was packed but it's really not a huge bar. They had frozen bull watermelon margaritas for $8 but I did not try it. I did see other guest drinking it. I went with my usual bud light. It was good. I did see that they served other guest food. We did not get a menu so not sure what the menus consisted of. This place is mainly for drinks I did not see any pool tables. They had a downstairs but it's only for staff. *NEGATIVE 5 STARS* Went in there a couple weeks ago for happy hour and was greeted by a middle aged bar keep, believe her name was Alexa but people kept calling her different names so I'm not completely sure. Sat there for probably 10-15 minutes while she sat on her laptop eating food. We patiently waited to order our drinks and finally got them but when ordering shots after the beers she rolled her eyes at us. We got the shots which were chilled with giant chunks of ice in them. What I'm presuming was a regular got up to use the rest room and she immediately started talking trash about him so the entire bar could hear her. She was completely unprofessional and seemed like she thought she ran the place. Our bill was around 19 so I left a 4 dollar tip which was over 20%. My friend went outside and I went to the bathroom and she must have thought we both left because she was talking trash about my partner and I leaving a bad tip. Everyone saw me and then she acted like it was about somebody else. I said something to her about it and she told me to get out and to not come back.... Trust me I won't. Worst service I've ever had in my life. I've been living in mainstrasse for about 15 years now and finally got to try this spot out bc I started drinking again. I honestly never will step on that side of the street again because of that experience. Bitch would be a better name for her, never met someone so disrespectful.... And my partner and I both work in otr and have never experienced this bad of service... don't waste your time, I'm honestly surprised she still has a job there... must be sleeping with the owner or blackmailing him. read more

This was unfortunately a terribly disrespectful experience. I'll start off by saying the bouncer was actually the best employee here. Here goes our experience., we came here at the end of the night and as I was finishing up my drink with my friends at 1:50ish (they close at 2:30) the bartenders were very rude and made comments at me saying "she's one of those" after paying for my drink and trying to finish it. It was extremely rude and wasn't professional. I mentioned that they were being very unprofessional with the way they were talking to us, and they immediately (blonde woman behind bar and "owner") told us we needed to go because we drank too much . The male bartender was claiming to be the "owner", and laughed when I claimed an owner wouldn't act in the manner he was displaying especially because I was with a group of people who had just spent a lot of money on shots celebrating a birthday. And all I was doing was finishing a drink when he said he wanted to "leave early and go home" And he started getting angry and one of my other friends asked for a lime for his drink and they said "sorry no I'm not going to help you." This is honestly the worst customer experience I've had at a bar. Whatever man and blonde woman working who claimed to be the owner that night were an embarrassing display of professionalism and if I was the actual owner of this bar, I'd fire these employees that are a LIABILITY to the business. This was the ABSOLUTE WORST BAR I've ever been to. I feel extremely disrespected, you should be embarrassed of these immature people working here. read more

So by the off-chance of Wunderbar! being closed, would've never stopped here. It's a really cool, funky spot. Bartenders were fairly attentive and informative. I think they have their own hockey league by what's adorned on their walls. To be honest, lots of interesting things are up on their walls. Kind of tightly spaced but that adds to the appeal. This is a cool little bar in the heart of the COV that is a staple! They are dog friendly and recently smoke free! The crowd here is hit or miss, but always down to earth. The decor inside is fun and the bartenders are as well. At one point one of them was dancing to the music, its nice to see people have fun while working hard! This is one of my favorite bars in Mainstrasse! Everyone is always really friendly. The atmosphere is really laid back and it's a fun place to grab a drink with friends. They have a great selection of canned craft beers. On multiple occasions I wanted to try something new and the bartenders have always been willing to take the time to make a recommendation of a new beer to try. The popcorn machine is definitely an added bonus. They recently renovated their patio area and when the weather is nice it's a great place to have a drink. Bartender spoke to 3 male customers/friends for 10 solid minutes without checking on another soul. She then followed them to the back door to see their car, I suppose. When one in our party expressed her frustration with the amount of attention the males were receiving, the bartender stated "and you won't be getting served any time soon". In a weird way Gypsy's atmosphere kind of reminds me of Neons. It's a filled with funky decor, awesome patio out back, great selection of drinks and rotating specials. This is a great newish bar to join the Covington scene. It's a bit removed from the most traveled portion of MainStrasse, but it's worth the walk. Full disclosure ...I have yet to purchase an actual drink from Gypsy's. I decided to do Dry January so I've basically killed a bunch of water here while watching everyone else drink themselves silly. DD, anyone? Anywho, while I've been a terrible customer thus far, I have observed (in my stone-cold sober state) that they have a great selection of beer at really reasonable prices. And to the extent they've noticed my obvious lack of drinking, none of the bartenders have given me a hard time about it and will likely appreciate me much more when January comes to an end. The atmosphere is awesome though. Lots of interesting stuff on the walls, tons of seating, and I'm pretty sure they have outdoor seating in the back (I'll tell you when it's not ridiculously cold outside). And the bathrooms aren't completely disgusting! Yay! My only real complaint is that they get a little crazy with the music. At some point during the night, someone always seems to crank the music up to the point where I can't even hear myself think. Maybe I'm just getting old. Womp womp. So if you can't find a seat at all those damn bars down the street, come on down to Gypsy's. I need someone to help me down this pitcher of water! read more

Went this Saturday for the first time with some coworkers. Last call is announced so we go up and get a last drink and close out. My coworker was given her receipt but still wanted another shot added to the bill and was trying to explain this to the bartender, mentioning that she hadn't left the tip yet. The female bartender (unsure name) misunderstands my coworker thinking she said "I don't tip for S**t" and so she threw down the card on the bar top and got very snappy with us. Mind you the music was still playing loud so I understand how she could've misunderstood but the reaction was objectionable. My coworkers and I tried to explain this to her, but she couldn't be bothered to acknowledge it was a misunderstanding. Another coworker had ordered a a shot and so the same bartender decided to grab to throw it out it in a way to that splashed all over my coworker even though my coworker didn't have a chance to take it and refused to give a refund. I get it, it is the end of the night you wanna go home and are tired but at the same time I don't come to a bar to have drinks splashed at me. Pretty disappointed considering the bar's atmosphere was pretty good however based on that experience I will not be coming back. read more

This is an amazing OPEN establishment. They do a lot for the comunity and have a great staff that takes time to get to know you and remember your name and make you feel like a party of the family if you go in. Great selection of beers, staff that knows how to mix a great drink, and even food one Some Sundays. Gypsy's is a great bar on a great street. My husband and I come in often. They have a good mix of craft beers (bottles and cans), and the bartenders can make a great mixed drink. My husband recommends their Manhattans. The bar is small to medium size with a nice little patio. The decor is nice and casual. They have good live music and a touchtunes jukebox. I don't know where to really start with Gypsys, I like Gypsys. It has its charm, I think that it is a bar that I can get behind for grabbing a fast drink or two during the week. It's not my favorite place to go on a weekend, it's very crowded and it doesn't have the best layout in my opinion for a crowded bar. I would definitely agree that Gypsys is a dive. As a dive bar goes it is doing great. They have popcorn, they have interesting decorations, and a generous patio. Nothing is over the top, nothing is wrong either. First off, the first ten minutes I was in this bar I wanted to leave. Thankfully by the end I wasn't as annoyed or upset. So here we go, we walked into the bar.. cool.. there's the bartender.. head up and a man "appears" to be hitting on my friend quickly, or asking for money. Either way, he looked as if he was a bar patron sitting on a bar stool.. NOT STANDING BY THE DOOR LOOKING LIKE A BOUNCER/ID CHECKER. So we bluntly, IGNORED HIM. When we did.. he proceeded to pull our clothes and yell at us. What??? Turns out he wanted to check our ID's which ISNT A PROBLEM AT ALL. But if you're an ID checker, act like one not a bar patron sitting in a stool. Sit by the door. And don't pull on women's clothing. Next, we got to the bar to order our drinks. I looked at what you had and saw you had orange vodka on the shelf. Girls night so I was like let's spice this up and get orange and orange. Bar tender comes over, appears to either be under the influence or extremely tired. I told her I wanted orange vodka and she said she didn't have any. I pointed to the bottle which clearly said ORANGE on it and she was like "oh grapefruit??" I'm like no... ORANGE. Two bottles down for Grapefruit. she proceeded to give me grape fruit, and for the sake of getting the fuck out of this bar, I took my drink paid and went on. Walked outside so we could get out of the crazy house because it looked at if they had heaters outside.. cool... just not turned on. Oh well... they had Jinga so we made the best of our time.. finished our one drink and quickly moved on. Decided this isn't our bar. read more

Stopped in again tonight (12-9-20) with my wife. Bartender (Kyle) carded my 62 year old wife (probably because she is black). He did not card me (73 years old & white)) There was a man sitting at the end of the bar chatting with Kyle. The patio was crowded and smoky so my wife went out front to smoke, I stayed inside since I was cold and I don't smoke and sat on a metal stool by the restroom...alone. Kyle came and told me I can't sit there although there was a man sitting at the end of the bar. I had to leave out the front door. Kyle needs to be fired...he was rude and probably also racist. I've been coming to this bar for over two years with no issues, always been a fun time and my favorite on Mainstrausse, however after this I will never go back. I went for drinks on Friday with co-workers and a young female bartender (with whom I've had conversations with and never had a problem, actually taken shots with her) ended up kicking us out of the bar. A miscommunication with my co-worker and the bartender happened about the bill around closing time, and instead of listening to others explain the situation, the bartender snatches drinks out of 2! of my co-workers hands, spilling one of them on my co-worker. She threatened to call the police on all of us and cut us all off, kicking out 5 paying customers who had really done nothing wrong. It's to be noted that this bartender was drinking all night tonight and was complaining about making two different shots for last call. I get being tired, but drinking on the job to the point of intoxication is incredibly unprofessional, but also, DON'T BE A BARTENDER IF YOU DON'T WANT TO MAKE SHOTS. If I could leave zero stars, I would. The bartender was shameful and drunk. Will NOT be back ever. read more
