First time trying today. I have eaten gyros in Greece, had shawarmas in Doha, Bahrain and Dubai. Of course Mexican streets vertical spit tacos in Tijuana and Ensenada and all over S. Cali. I went to the Stanwood one at 6:30pm at a presumably busy time. I was the only one there, noted. They serve shawarmas and gyros. Ok so, The big difference is the spices and sauces. Prior to roasting the meat shawarmas use Middle Eastern spices and gyros use Mediterranean spices, not the same flavor but equally as good! Also, gyros use tzatziki sauce (cucumbers, fresh dill, squeezed lemon, sour cream), and shawarmas use different sauces. I loved the red pepper sauce in Bahrain. @ different flavors from 2 different regions which are equally as good! This place used one dried out processed (beef/lamb?) meat slab for both shawarmas and gyros which seemed to use only salt as a spice. First off, the meat is supposed to be layered cuts of marinated beef, lamb and chicken. Or whatever combination you like. Then spit roasted on a vertical roaster. The juices from the roasted meat fall on the stack and are sliced off when done. Customer volume makes this technique very smart because the meat is sliced off when perfectly done and customers line up to get it sliced fresh off the vertical roaster (spit). Perfect. This particular Gyro Stop had one meat product on the vertical spit. Only half the burners were going at low temp just keeping the cylinder of premade processed meat warm. Probably the same process as Arbys compressed roast beast. It looked crusty and dry and I was gonna quit right there but decided I'd give the 18 dollar gyro a shot. (other countries their like 2 bucks) The meat was sliced off and put on the flat top grill with oil to heat the already dry and over cooked processed meat and it was too salty. The tzatziki was like ranch dressing with dried dill. No discernable cucumbers. I had 2 bites and sadly threw the rest in the garbage, You couldn't pay me to eat that again. The staff was great! Good service. That's my opinion in 1 visit. Constructively comment on why I should go back. Are there other dishes to try that are better? Let me know, I always give 2 chances. A new, long awaited addition to the flavors of Stanwood! PNW chain of Mediterranean deliciousness has opened with a great selection of foods to choose from. I couldn't choose from the menu so grabbed the beef and lamb plate, with meat well seasoned and cooked to perfection. The plate also comes with hummus, pita, a small salad and rice. I also needed to try the side order of falafel. There are six pieces to an order with sauce to dip in. They were fried a little more than I normally like, but the insides were soft and the he perfect taste. Of course I had to have dessert with some choklava. Not sure why I expected chocolate inside but there was plenty on top and nuts inside. A friend with me let me taste the lentil soup and baklava. Both were winners! read more

I used to LOVE this place. The food has gone downhill. I don't know what has happened but I won't be ordering again. I ordered delivery, which you shouldn't have to worry about the difference in quality... but in this case.... the Chicken Shawarma was not only in a smaller take out tray then when you buy in the actual location, the chicken was disgusting.... old, dry, zero flavor... tasted like sawdust. It had nothing to do with 15-20 min travel time. I gave it to my dogs. I hate to do ratings like this, but when I called, the employee hung up on me. Get your act together. I had never been to a Gyro Stop or had Mediterranean food but oh gosh, am I sad I waited 34 years to try it. The chicken shawarma is AMAZING, as are the Greek fries. I should probably branch out and try other things, but right now these are a 10/10. Even when they are busy, they are quick at making your order and the food is always fresh (at least in my experience). The manager is always super friendly and personable too. I would give 5 stars to their Shawarma sandwich. It tasted really fresh and the sauce was delicious! The sandwich was perfectly balanced. Not too soggy, not dry and with the right ratio of lettuce and chicken. The ambiance is exactly what you'd expect for a little street mall shop, and the service was very attentive. Went to lunch with my girl and stepdaughter and they both had the gyro (lamb /beef) plate which was a good portion of meat rice salad and hummus, the hummus was a bit bland but they loved everything else, I had gyro (lamb/beef) pita with side order of falafel they were so crunchy and delicious sauce was good, I should have asked for some chili sauce but will definitely be back and have a better game plan read more

Sleepy Stanwood isn't exactly a culinary hub - far from it actually - so I was BEYOND pumped to see Gyro Stop was being added to the mix. So excited that I had been calling the Smokey Point location repeatedly to find out when they were opening. Alas, this beaut is open for business and my soul is screaming with joy! I ordered my usual beef & lamb gyro and it was seriously perfect. The meat was tender, well-seasoned and topped with an ample amount of veggies, feta and hummus/tzatziki. Pro-tip: I always ask for a side of tzatziki and their pickled turnips, which go great with the gyro (think pickles served on the side of a cheeseburger). As other reviewers have mentioned, Stanwood has very few options for dining-even for American food! It must be all the old people or something. Anyway, back on track... the food here is pretty much the best Greek/Mediterranean/Middle Eastern cuisine in the area. The workers here aren't scared to pile on the food, and they definitely don't skimp with the quality. Not only is the food AWESOME but the owner was pretty nice too. Just now stopped here...they've been open for 6 months but I seldom pass & didn't know they were there. Had the Lamb Shawarma which was enormous & very tasty. So many other choices to go back for. Lamb was tender & spices excellent. Asked if the Baklava was homemade..no...but tried it anyway. I'm very picky about Baklava because once you've had it homemade you will never go back! It was good but can't beat homemade. Nice to have a new place to go to besides everyday fare. Also, the wrap for takeaway is excellent. I only mention this because I can never eat it all & previously at other places the wrap has leaked by the time get home. Very clean & friendly....just go! read more

The problem is I am used to a great Shwarma plate (King Co.), grilled on the spot with onions and other spices while you wait. This is pre-cooked chicken without the beloved onions added.
