I remember when this used to be the old place....litterly the exact same menu...I think it was called Lydia's...idk...anyway...the meal used to be the gyro and fries....for like 11$ back then...now like 15$ no fries...that's not inflation. This place is emptier than my heart, which is confusing because the food is decent for what it is...but between the lack of what you get and the random name...I can see why it's not what it was. Very disappointed being my first time trying out this place. Spend around $30 on food and 20 minutes into waiting for my food I was told they didn't have something in stock, so the cashier offered to replace it with something else. (Which was unpleasant to hear because if they didn't have it in stock I wouldn't have ordered anything). I think these are the best gyros on the island. Great price, great food. We ordered just a regular gyro with Greek fries. It's a good amount, fresh ingredients, the meat was tender and delicious. People order take out more than dining in but that's alright. I'll have to try something else on the menu next time I'm in town! read more

Ordered a Western Gyro with Chicken. The boy with the blonde braid relayed the message there was no mozzarella cheese. I relayed the message that was fine but the cheese needed to be melted in a polite manner. Receiving the beef and sharp shredded not melted cheese was disappointing. They did remake the sandwich. The blonde braid boy complained and didn't understand why he had to remake my sandwich after the women re took my order and explained. And when I went to eat my correct sandwich it was 3 sliced thick noodle shaped shred chicken with the most outrageous amount of onions and peppers no cheese but ranch sauce. For two sandwich and fries was $26. The sandwich pita was messy and ripped and not portable. The falafel my partner received was underwhelming. The fries were badly over seasoned with parmesan. I am hovering in-between three and four stars with this one. I first had Hillbilly Gyros when they used their food truck in Mount Vernon at Farmstrong Brewing and Steve and I really liked what we had each and every time from them. Later we found out that they had a permanent location on Whidbey Island which made us very excited to try it because we were disappointed when they weren't at Farmstrong anymore. At the physical location they still have great gyros but the place could be cleaner. Most people took their food to go but we stayed and the tables could have really used a cleaning. Not sure why this didn't happen when a customer left each time or why it was like this overnight. I say it was like this overnight because we arrived shortly after they opened. We also got some dessert which we enjoyed as well so no issues with anything that we ordered to eat other than cleanliness and service was a bit slow but that's ok for the time we visited the island as we weren't in a hurry at all but if you are pressed for time best call ahead and place a take out order. read more

I was looking for somewhere new (to me) to eat and decided to give AB's Hillbilly Gyros a try. I probably had unduly high expectations about the food. I lived in Chania, on the Greek island of Crete for about 2 years. So, maybe my grade of only 3 stars is a little unfair. My greatest disappointment was with the lamb. It wasn't carved from a haunch, it was pressed into slices somewhat like a minute-steak. This left the lamb with a bland taste. I was happy with the portions. The gyro was HUGE! I missed having fries inside with the meat and veggies (that's how the gyro shops in Chania served the gyros). When I was there, Saturday afternoon between 1:30 and 2:00) there was only one table open. So it seems AB's is fairly popular. I will be back and try either a chicken or beef gyro to compare with the lamb gyro. read more

I've heard good things about Hillbilly so I made it a point to stop by before heading out sailing. I had forty minutes so I had time for something more interesting than a drive thru typically produces. I ordered a meal, substituting falafel for the fries with a chicken souvlaki sandwich. As I sat down to wait I started becoming alarmed once twenty minutes passed and got up to make sure I saw the time right. At that point they came out and apologized for the wait and handed me a bag with a desert in it. Not sure if it was part of the meal or a peace offering. After 32 minutes my food came out and I was off. Good things come to those who wait right? Not in my case. The sandwich fell apart. The bread broke all apart and eating it required a fork. I think it sat a bit too long under a warming light. Overall it was bland and the tomato and tzatziki were the most interesting part. Unfortunately there was only one slice of tomato and the tzatziki was not evenly distributed. I give it a 1/5, I wouldn't even take a free one if they were giving them away. The falafel was the star of this show. Good flavor all by itself and a definite upgrade to the sandwich! I asked for tzatziki but got what tasted only like plain Greek yogurt, still a solid 3/5. They had issues with prompt service and execution. Overall I can only recommend the falafel and if you are in a hurry, make sure to order ahead! read more

Born and raised in NY, it's both a blessing and a curse that I've been exposed (and biased by) really good Greek food. I thought the French fries were excellent, but the gyro itself left a lot to be desired. The lamb was okay, but the tzatziki sauce was flavorless, seemingly just some sautéed onions in plain yogurt (no garlic, cucumber, olive oil, lemon juice or dill) and having to pay extra to add feta-- a standard ingredient on a gyro--is bizarre. Also having to ask for lettuce to be added is again not what I'm used to. I haven't tried the other menu offerings but with the flagship item this poor I don't think I'm willing to spend that kind of money on a second chance. read more

But now it's been 25 minutes since I called. 19 minutes later I ask why taking so long.. family gets their food, and I'm still waiting. He apologized but there's no one else here. They are very fast when it comes to preparation, and the food was still very hot even after I had to drive home! Went to the vendor section for the Juan de Fuca Festival today and happened up on their food truck. I'm a sucker for gyros and had to give them a try. I gotta say, it was disappointing. I ordered a "traditional" gyro (they have all kinds of variations), fries and two kinds of baklava. The gyro came with tomato, onion, meat, tzatziki, feta on a pita. The pita was soft and warm and the tomato was fresh. That's about it for the pros. The cons--it was bland. All of it. The tzatziki tasted like yogurt and it had green chunks in it. I think the green chunks were cucumber, but it didn't taste like cucumber. There was no lemon or garlic or anything in the tzatziki. Feta--not sure why it was in there, but I guess that's a thing here to put feta in a gyro. I've never had a gyro with feta until I moved to Washington. And the meat (I'm assuming it was the lamb/beef pressed meat?) was tasteless and had a bone shard in it (I mean it's gonna happen, but damn). The fries were meh. Fries are fries, right? It did bother me that one of the kids tending to the fries kept touching her mouth and then proceeded to process my food. I'm not okay with that. I get it's a family operation, but basic food prep hygiene has rules and those were not being followed. The baklava--I ordered the walnut and the pistachio. We tried the walnut and couldn't eat more than a bite each. I don't know what they put in it, but it seems like they put glazed donut icing in it not honey. It was so sickeningly sweet, it was inedible. And they put only one layer of nuts in it. Every other baklava I've eaten has phyllo layer, nut/honey layer, phyllo layer, nut/honey layer. Their baklava had just one layer of nuts in the middle and that grossly sweet what tasted like donut icing in it. We didn't even bother trying the pistachio one because the walnut one was so disappointing. Service--This is a tiny thing, but it matters. The guy taking orders couldn't read his own handwriting and my name was called by the guy cooking (it wasn't my name), he asked the guy taking orders what the name read and he couldn't read his own handwriting so my order got set down for a while until they figured out what the name was on the order. I've never had such watered down Greek food before. It's not a good experience. Looking at the reviews for the restaurant, they must do a better job there than they do on the road in their food truck. Or people's tastebuds are on the fritz. read more

Found them at the Anacortes Art Festival this past Saturday. So sad to say they were okay. I order the Philly and it was not a Philly I am use too. I think they used the same style of beef that they put in their Gyro. My husband had their lamb gyro and he said it was "okay." For $8 a piece they were okay..nothing special and now I can check them off mt "must try " Greek option in Anacortes. read more

The gyros were pretty good, but I agree with other diners that wait is just too long. It pretty ridiculous overall even if you call ahead you are still waiting about 20-30 minutes. I ran errands in between and still had to wait. They need a more experienced line cook that can churn out those orders. This rating is not based on covid at all and strictly on the food. The first time visiting, we tried to order a few items (spanakopita and another I can't recall) and were told they were "out and wouldn't be getting more for a few days since someone has just ordered 8" which led me to believe they were frozen items that are only reheated there. I gave it a second chance and tried a veggie platter, which is mediocre. The falafel seem like they are frozen and reheated which is disappointing but not surprising given that other items were frozen, the salad is average and the tzatiki is bland and lackluster. The pita was soft and puffy, so that was probably the best part of the meal. Seeing positive reviews on the food leaves me wondering if these people have ever had actual Greek food in their lives before eating here. I would not recommend. read more
