I manage two small buildings in DC and the building entry door handle had been sheared off by force long story short they removed the embedded bolts, scheduled a reinstallation of the entire assembly and today Steve M. was the field locksmith and did a truly five star and then some service. If there is such a thing as the "Neiman Marcus of locks", this place would be it. We had just bought our new house and due to my crazy security paranoias (hey, I watch enough horror/slasher films to know that the little Asian girl bites it EVERY TIME), I insisted that we get new locks for the place immediately following settlement. As our agent's dad and uncle are the owners of H&H, he kindly called them up to let them know that we were coming over. H & H is tiny and the store is crammed to the ceiling (literally) with locks, safes and all sorts of security gear! It's not well organized, but it's OK, because all you need to do is talk to the guys here, and they will help you out with what you need! We explained to them my paranoia...yet as we just plunked down a huge chunk of our savings for this house, we also needed to watch the budget. They immediately found us a lock that was super strong and very secure...yet didn't break the bank. Although they have an install service, after speaking to my husband for a few minutes and assertaining his handiman-status (ie. does he know what a screwdriver looks like? Has he ever installed a lock before?), they gave him some instructions and sent us on our merry way. YAY! Very knowledgeable and very nice! Definitely carries some of the more heavy-duty and specialized locks...but honestly, when it comes to home security, do you *really* want to chintz out?! read more

Quoted $500 to change the combination on an safe they sold and installed. This is a 30-second process but the store refused to provide instructions for "liabilty reasons". Only options were a $500 service call or $300 if I removed the doors and brought them into the shop. I called the manufacturer and they emailed me instructions for changing the combination; which I did in less than minute. read more

If I could give them zero stars, I would. I needed to replace a Weslock deadbolt. I went into the store and told him exactly what I wanted. He asked if I wanted light, medium or heavy duty - I didn't know the difference, so he showed me. Then I showed him the key I needed rekeyed to. He told me I didn't have a Weslock - and that wasn't a Weslock key. He needed a real Weslock key. He would rekey the lock to the key I had for $40 per cylinder (double cylinder) but would not guarantee it for any key but that one. He continued to argue that was not a Weslock key and even showed me how my key didn't match the settings on his guide. Never once did he even consider that we had had all of the locks on the house rekeyed - which is why I didn't have a Weslock key (it wouldn't have fit). I have never been treated as rudely by anyone as this guy did. He had all the answers - and anything I said was wrong. Here's a clue. Try asking questions before making assumptions. I ended up walking out and getting the lock from another company who didn't give me a ration of crap. It only cost me $30 to have both cylinders rekeyed and is installed and working just great. read more

I am restoring an antique watch-makers bench with six drawers all with similar, but not exactly identical, Corbin brass cylinder locks. Paul was able to identify the locks, the approximate date they were produced, and then he made a master key to operate all the locks. I know he spent much more time on this job than he charged me but his commitment to customer satisfaction and his pride in solving the unique problem of the antique Corbin lock made the difference. I needed a duplicate which home depot didn't have blanks for. I was recommended H&H at Gaither road in Maryland and they carried a blank for a discontinued lock from New York, the blank was three times more expensive than a regular blank. After I made two copies for this unusual lock, I compared the cuts and noticed a misalignment, I mentioned to the employee the missed cut and he said that the cuts were good and that the keys were made better than the "misaligned"original and that his machine was doing its job. I tried both keys made at H&H at the lock in New York and both did NOT work. I made another duplicate at a local store in New York at $2 a copy and it worked. I wouldn't even come back to H&H for a refund or recut, but if you go, let them know to fix their machine before they make bad duplicates for you. read more

[the big warehouse DIY stores said they couldn't make copies] The guy behind the counter did a thorough job of explaining why he was reluctant and what my options were. They didn't carry exact copies of the key blanks I needed but he thought he could try something close. The new key works just as well as the original. i was UNLUCKY enough to be served by the owner, Paul, an old white man who took one look at me, young and not white, and decided I didn't deserve the right to be served at his store. At first, I was surprised when Paul interrogated me about my business but I quietly answered his ridiculously personal questions. But then I was truly shocked when he scoffed at my answers and accused me of lying! But Paul was at odds because I had followed H&H's strict policy on copying "Do No Duplicate" keys, providing the EXACT documentation requested. Instead of following protocol, Paul kept eyeing me and repeating that my request was "unusual" as if that was enough reason to decline my request. Then Paul pulls out his phone and desperately tries google me, my address, anything to find proof that he shouldn't make a duplication. All for a $12 DOLLAR KEY! Well, that was enough for me, I told him he wasn't a police officer and I was uncomfortable with his invasion of my privacy. "Quiet!" Paul said pointing his finger at me...... You see Paul thought I should be the one listening to him, that people like me are lucky to be served by him and his store H&H Lock and Security. I left immediately but not before telling him off. The thing is, I loved this place when I walked in, keys and dust everywhere! I love old-timey mom & pop-llke stores but there's a reason they keep vanishing. My dad was changing out a traditional lock on my house to a keypad lock. He could not remove the old lock to save his life. So my Dad went to the pro counter at Home Depot to get some help. No one at the Pro Counter had ever seen the type of lock mechanism my dad was showing them. They referred my dad to H&H Lock and Security. My dad arrived just as they were about to close and with a line of people. My dad just said he needed advice on how to remove this lock and he was willing to pay for the advice. The guy took one look at the pictures on my dad's phone and came back with the "key" mechanism my dad needed to remove the lock. My dad wanted to pay for the guy's time but the guy refused and looked up the price of the "key" mechanism; it was $16. My dad tried to pay the guy $40 but the guy refused. My dad was pretty impressed. He came home and handed the "key" to my son who took the lock right off! These guys know locks and customer service! read more

DO NOT use H&H lock. I asked these people to install a high-security deadbolt and they ended up charging me $284 to install a replacement door knob with no lock on it at all. Somehow they thought this was an acceptable way to treat customers. If you're looking for quality, look elsewhere. read more

Stopped in to get a duplicate key that was not available at Home Depot or Lowes. This is the place to go if you need a key. They also have locks, safes and many other types security items along with a cramped showroom. The service was efficient, knowledgeable and pleasant. H&H reminds me of an old-time hardware store before the big boxes became popular. They are located on a side street (off Shady Grove Road behind Home Depot) and not visible from the road although they do have a prominent sign on Gaither Road. It is worth the time to hunt it down. read more
