I had an emergency and needed to see my accountant at H&R block on Wilshire Blvd ASAP! Major deadline was approaching and I thought I'd never get her this time of year. I called the branch number and the manager (Cesar Salazar)picked up. He said she's not there but could get ahold of her and have her phone back within 15 minutes (yea...right...I thought). Literally within 15 minutes my genius of a master tax agent,Nydia Prado was calling me back and booking an appointment the next day at 10am! Now that is the type of service you never get anymore. She had no other appointments in that office and we were all alone fixing my emergency. We ended up doing an amendment and the price was amazing for the amount of work she did. She spotted the problem quickly. Nydia and Cesar...I am so grateful to you both. I have been coming to H&R Block for 7yrs! I started with Nydia at her old location where I referred 4 friends who also love her and when she transferred I followed her to this location. Nydia is incredible and has made my life surrounding taxes so much easier. She has a great heart and she KNOWS HER STUFF! One time she sat on the phone with me at like 5pm at the office for over an hr while we waited on hold to speak with someone at the IRS about questions regarding an amount that I owed. That's the sort of dedication she puts forth for her clients! She wants to make sure you leave with a resolution and a peace of mind. I also prefer this location bc there's parking so that makes it an easier experience plus the woman at the front desk at this location, Katherine is so sweet and kind. Went to H&R Block for the first time this year and I'm so grateful that we were scheduled to meet with Nydia Prado. She was so wonderful to work with! As she prepared our taxes she would stop at each step to explain what she was doing and make sure we understood while answering any questions that we had. She didn't rush us through the process and patiently answered all of our questions. I cannot recommend Nydia enough! We will definitely continue working with her in the years to come. Joan Boucher is the least professional person I have had the displeasure of working with. She was late to our meeting, to submitting my taxes on time, and overall uncommunicative. She messed up my taxes, did not bother communicating with me that papers were missing, and refused to admit it. I have had to now pay thousands of dollars in IRS fees because of her. I have called H&R block numerous times to try and fix this and they have promised me they will look into her but have never gotten any response or problem solving. All I get from them are calls asking to schedule next year's appointment. Rest assured I won't ever work with them again and Joan deserves to be fired for her complete lack of professionalism. read more

The IRS recently sent me a statement saying I owe $7k, which is insane because when I filed it was for about 4k (which is still incredibly high for my income but I digress). I felt scared and stressed and set up an appointment with HR block. I immediately got someone calling me back saying that they couldn't go through with my appointment because the office is closed that day (I wonder why the system even let me make an appointment-- but okay....) The woman on the phone was kind enough to get someone to come in on that day anyways and work with me, someone named Cesar-- which is where our trouble begins. Cesar called me and said that he had to cancel my appointment because we needed to find out if the IRS even got my return before we start to make any moves. I understood, and I sent him all my necessary documents, including the letter from the IRS. After reading my letter, Cesar basically told me that I have no choice but to pay $7k. He offered to make an amendment but couldn't tell me what that would solve, and wouldn't offer me any alternative solutions that could fix this issue. He also didn't do a very good job of explaining why I would still owe this much. Instead, he offered to make me a consultation appointment ($99) so he could explain it in more detail. I asked if I would still owe $7k after this consult, and he said yes. So I said okay, thanks for your help, and he immediately rushed off the phone with a quick "Have a good day" and hung up. No apologies, no alternative plan, nothing. I got a second opinion at a professional firm, and within a few hours, someone was able to look at my return, look at my letter, and look at my deductions, and immediately tell me the route to fixing the issue and completely put my mind at ease. They explained it very easily and it seemed like a pretty simple fix. If I had listened to Cesar, it would have put me in financial ruin. I think that the way that he handles his clients is incredibly irresponsible if this is his usual M.O. He seriously told me that because the number $7k is in the IRS's system now, there's no way to change it. I'm very disappointed in this HR block. Completely mishandled what was apparently a simple situation. read more

DO NOT USE H&R BLOCK. I used them 2 times at this specific locations. They aren't good. The manager is incompetent and will just back up the errors of his staff. Errors that cost THOUSANDS! They intentionally misreported my income and I told them it wasn't correct. The competent preparer who originally got my business, did it correctly, but they have a head person name Joan B. Do NOT use her. She's rude and the manager Cesar was useless. He doesn't seem to have a solid understanding of tax prep laws. I ended up with a huge refund and have been spending most of this year trying to fix their error. If you have property, double check!!! If you have health insurance, double check!!! They miss deductions and cost you money. And when you get a CPA to check and identify their errors and also identify the errors with the CA Franchise Tax Board, they WILL NOT HONOR THE PEACEFUL MIND CLAIM! They will not fix the errors or pay you back. Check Reddit. There are other people who have noticed that they will make something up to not honor the claim. In my case, they strung me along and caimed they routed it up to a regional manager and just ghosted. They blamed me for filing when I PAID THEM TO DO MY TAXES! If the tax professional didn't file the right form to do the taxes correctly, that's on them. I didn't even realize how many errors were made. I tried talking with them for months. I found out that there was an FTC violation for the company as a whole. I highly recommend looking them up. A rep associated with a regulatory agency told me that H&R Block is tied to many complaints and if I am going to use a corporate tax preparer office, they said to use Turbo Tax. Prior to going to the H&R Block office to get a tax preparer to do my taxes, I used TurboTax. Turbo Tax was great as a self service tool for simple taxes. I never had an audit or issue. I regret every using H&R Block. They didn't even upload my tax forms into the app. The preparer kept blaming me for something that SHE needed to get fixed on the back end. It's a mess over there. It's a mess at other places. Another office was better and identified what to do immediately, but couldn't step in to help me. This has made me question corporate tax preparation. It's a grift. They don't honor their own consumer commitments and clearly have. training issue. Blaming the consumer even when they got licensed CPA's with attorneys in offices to identify the errors is crazy. I am committed to warning people and will write on every platform periodically. read more

Nydia Prado is the Software Operator who helped me, I repeat software operator not CPA! I had a very bad experience with this branch of H&R Block. I end-up paying 1000-1200 USD more to IRS because of their poor knowledge. (Obviously, now I have to go through so many extra steps to get that money back from IRS and potentially complex procedure that I would end up paying more in fees and all). They don't have any knowledge of filing non-resident, yet they took the job from me. After 6 months of filling when I got to know there was a mistake by CPA. I have sent the IRS official guideline document to them. They didn't believe me and defending them and their buggy software, disregard the IRS official document. They don't understand that the "software is as good as it built" (by humans). After calling them many times, hearing rude sentences from Nydia Prado. She transferred me to (so-called) branch manager. I don't know the name but the branch-manager asked for unrealistic large fees (unprofessionally and rudely) to consider my request to help me. I paid H&R block fees in the first place to fraud me (not help me). And upon asking them to correct their mistake they asked me an unrealistic large amount of fees. One more unbelievable scathy thing happened with me is (for the same visit described above), H&R block took fees fro me to fill my amendment return and they filled it but they never submitted to IRS which I got to know recently. Surprisingly they never told me this they hand of client copy to me for amended return but they submitted the original to IRS. That's breaking every limit of irresponsible job. The bottom line is this place is running fraud and scam in name of CPA, in reality, it's a bunch of Software operators. There is nothing wrong with being Software Operator but please don't call yourself a goddamn CPA! read more

Absolutely worthless. Do not get your taxes done here. Came here to get taxes done and they looked at the K1 document and had no clue what it was. Yes, I understand that a K1 is not a common filing that people have but even the guy in charge was clueless. They advertise that they will get you the most refund back, such lies. And then, they wanted to charge over $200 to file. So, you don't even know how to file my taxes yet you are going to charge me a ridiculous amount?! My regular tax preparer usually does my taxes and do a good job. This year she screwed up and failed to file my taxes after having them 2 weeks. Text messaging is not a professional way of communication and asking questions through a Text Message isn't a good way of accountability. . Not all people live by their phones. Not returning messages is another issue. Whatever issues / distractions she had, she should have said "I can't do your taxes" she left her manger holding the ball and it wasn't until 3 hours prior to tax deadline when the manager stepped in and defused a situation where my taxes would have been delayed because of her failure to do or be honest. My taxes were done, incorrect as I had to pay money a large sum of money to the States which has never happened before. Taxes filed 3 hours before deadline and after H&R Block was closed. I had to run to the office to get them done as no message was given to me about this. Lynne - you are nice, but you really screwed up and need to say NO and take care of yourself. Because he was the "primary filer" last year and because I have not been able to file yet this year as an individual due to Covid-19 I am apparently not eligible to obtain an electronic copy of MY tax documents. Wow. They need to get rid of Juan. Absolutely the worst. I get it, I hate my job too sometimes and with the Turbo Tax become more readily available, I understand how a tax preparer may feel threatened. I called knowing that I would need to pay for the service I was inquiring about. I called to simply ask if I could get assistance filling out a 8692 using my 1095-A and 1040 EZ. Juan: Oh so was there not a link on Turbo Tax to get assistance from them? Me: You know honestly I called because I wanted in person assistance. Juan: Oh so on the Turbo Tax site, does it give a link or information to call H&R Block? I'm just wondering. I'm just curious. (Laughs stupidly) Me: No, it does not. What kind of questions were those? It's obvious he doesn't want to help so I become more forward with him. Me: If you don't want to help that's fine. I can call somewhere else. Juan: Listen, I'm trying to help. I said you can bring the forms in. Me: No, no you haven't. You've been asking me unrelated, sarcastic questions. Juan: Listen I'm just trying to help. No, folks he wasn't. This is the first person to answer the call? This is the front man. That sucks. Really sucks. I wasn't mad or upset. I just want to fill out a form correctly in person but maybe Juan was right, maybe calling Turbo Tax for immediate assistance is best. UPDATE: called Turbo Tax and a representative did help me and it took less than 10 minutes and I wasn't charged anything. So thank you Juan for the solid advice! read more

The only year that I've owed a ton of taxes is when I had a tax professional from this HR Block prepare them for me. My experience felt like a horror story and I highly do not recommend having your taxes filed here. The tax professional did not listen to my deductions, didn't prepare the forms I needed, was argumentative and didn't calculate correctly. I am now amending my tax form from that year to include the correct deductions that I should have gotten to begin with therefore resulting in less taxes I owe - drastically. Complete waste of my money and time. I had to pay money for taxes that I didn't even owe. Very upsetting. read more

DO NOT GO HERE! I had my 2010 taxes done here, since I work freelance, and my taxes are just a little complicated. Well, it is now Feb of 2012, and the IRS just sent me a letter saying that I owe $1,102 extra because my "tax professional" at H & R Block couldn't add up my 1099s correctly. Well, I assumed that H & R Block would do something to try and help me out on this...I was as wrong as thinking that a "Tax Professional" should be able to add numbers together. They offered $20 for my trouble, less than the interest I owed on the taxes, and told me there was nothing they could do. I was sort of taken off guard considering I paid $430 for my taxes to be prepared, so I assumed that they would guarantee their work... Wrong again. They won't even refund the amount that I paid to have my taxes done WRONG. Stay away from this place. Stay away from Lisa Caras. Stay away from Cesar the manager. Also, the best part of all of this, there were two other people in the waiting room with the same form from the IRS regarding unpaid taxes. Seriously, go somewhere else! read more

The one year (2012) I decided to do my taxes was the one year they were epically screwed up! I would be giving this location 5 stars because Joan is definitely 5 stars, but I have to give it 4 because Joan had to come to my rescue...the dispatcher for this location originally set me up with an accountant not certified to do what I needed to do, even though I thoroughly explained what I needed done. So, basically, if you go here, request Joan! Anyway - she finished my taxes in seriously less than 2 hours and even stayed late for me to come back when I was finished with work to review everything and pay my bill. When I wait an hour for a scheduled appointment at one of your field offices and finally walk out after hearing disparaging remarks, it's RUDE. When I call your Los Angeles corporate office and there are no managers to speak with regarding the issue, it's RUDE. When I am assigned a number and told that "they will call you if they have any questions regarding your case," it's RUDE. When nobody calls me back in a week, it's very RUDE. If I want RUDE, I would much rather go to the Improv or The Comedy Store and enjoy a drink while I am insulted. At least I know what to expect there and it's FUNNY. For all freelancers in the industry I must say stay far away from here! They do not understand what is required and I got my worst return from here. My old person retired and I was looking to go with a proven place. The person helping me didn't understand what they were doing and I was explaining what they should do. Then the manager came over and made adjustments and cost me even more. In the cubical next to me I heard a costume person being told they couldn't write off pretty standard things. I imagine if you got a regular W2 job with a house and other standard place, these guys are fine, but if in the industry or a freelance I would say to avoid and look around. read more

A sad but true tale: Waiting to the last minute to do our 2011 taxes last year = getting a person with little experience = a messed up tax return here. The refund amounts were off (less!) by several hundred dollars. This was followed recently by a letter from the IRS stating that more 2011 taxes were owed--despite the tax REFUND received last year. Even if you get an experienced tax person, I would strongly suggest paying the extra fee they charge which will reimburse you if they make an error. (Yeah, you read that right: you have to pay EXTRA to cover yourself in case THEY make a mistake on the tax returns you PAID them to prepare. The regular fee covers interest and penalties only, not additional taxes you might owe due to their mistake.) At minimum, double check your returns before signing off for H&R to send them to the IRS/State. read more

My family and I highly recommend this office mainly because of their tax preparer LISA CARAS. I read one bad review for this office and the bad review for Lisa. Although I do not know the circumstances that this person had to go through, I know for a fact, that Lisa Caras has been taking care of my family's tax preparation for 15 years now. She will go out of her way to make sure that every base is covered and she makes sure that she thoroughly explains everything that your tax return encompasses. She will do her very best to maximize your tax refund. Lisa is dependable, reliable, trustworthy, and thorough. Also, H&R Block offers "Peace of Mind" to all their customers, If somehow something was missed or a correction needed to be made, by getting "Peace of Mind" you will not have to worry about anything. H&R Block and your tax preparer will take care of it all. You will only need to pay what you owe in taxes. Again, I do not know the circumstances of the other reviewer. But I hope that he/she will have better luck this year and the next. As for myself and my whole family, we will return to LISA CARAS next year, the year after, and the many years after that as well. read more
