I'm going to give this supermarket a three because of prices. Now from the moment I walked into the store, I was overwhelmed because of it being the kind of market it was. I was quite happy to see some items I was familiar with but because I'm not Asian, I would think that that it would be some one around to help answer some questions, maybe guide some one twas the many options of a particular item they have. Example, I went looking for a certain kind of vinegar to have with my soup dumplings, found the section but no one was around to help me figure out which one to choose from all the options they had. I mean they had many customers going in there knowing exactly what they wanted and what to look for, but for someone like me, I just wished they had more staff working or around to help customers as myself. Overall I do like the market because they not only have food for preparation, but they also had hot cooked food, a fresh seafood/fish area, and kitchen appliances along with household items. The prices are also quite high for some basic products, that you could find cheaper elsewhere. Im gonna yes for another visit but I just can't give any thumbs up or down. Prices are a little higher for certain things but they do have a solid selection of Korean items - also there is Kbbq chicken (Korean fried chicken- delicious and grab & go). This H Mart at B'way and W. 110/Cathedral is relatively well stocked, considering the space, if you're looking for Korean food items or select Asian items, however the prices appear to be geared to those indifferent, e.g., paying with trust funds or their parents' credit cards. Wow! Compared to other nearby supermarkets, almost everything at this H Mart makes Morton Williams feel like a discount store! My shopping here is typically limited to grabbing a bite from their prepared sushi section. Although not a large variety, it is fresh and price in line with the convenience of grabbing it to enjoy at home. While I'm not one for buying fresh Kimchi for home, they also have a sizable selection. Other than that, this H Mart's prepared foods are ridiculously overpriced... (see pic) like $14.99 or $16.99 for a their "bbq" chickens, which doesn't list unit price or quantity in the box! Checked and a box weighs in just over a pound excluding the box! [Maybe this is why there is no unit price or piece count anywhere.] Outrageous!!!!! (Seriously, I'll take a bigger BJ's 3 lbs. rotisserie chicken for $4.99 over those any day!) There is a decent selection of imported snacks here, but it's not worth the overall store experience. If you are black or come into the store with somebody black, they will have security follow and question you. Also, I've gambled with buying the hot prepared food around 3 or more times, and it always tastes stale and disgusting. The store is most likely leaving hot food out longer than they should. When I first moved into the neighborhood I was so excited because H Mart is so close to the new location. However I have found myself to be less than impressed with the grocery store once I started doing my main food shopping here. One of my main concerns is food safety. Today is a great example of this concern. I bought six onigiri rice triangles and didn't realize that the expiration date was today. I thought that it was a simple mistake with an easy fix regarding a refund on only those products. The refund would have simply been $25. I spent a total of $135. Normally I take expiration dates with a grain of salt but when it comes to fish and chicken that's just not an option. When I spoke to two people at the store and despite the fact that the food was expired I was refused a refund. They tried to skirt around the fact that it was unsafe to eat after only one day of making it. That's not a good sign that their "fresh" fish expires after one day of being refrigerated. At first they told me that it was safe to eat and then after prying for more information they said that it wasn't safe. I didn't want to cause a scene so I left and told them that I would be calling the credit card company to dispute the charges. I'm grateful that there is a Westside Market across the street. Let's face it, New York City is definitely not cheap by any stretch of the imagination, whether that's due to everyone coming here to chase their dream here or simple supply and demand. New York City is expensive in part because of choice and diversity that it has to offer. Where else can you find authentic ethnic food and the ingredients to make said ethnic food. You can add H Mart, the Korean counter part to the Sunrise market for Japanese groceries or Patel Brothers for Desi groceries or Tashkent for Eastern European groceries, to the list of things that you can pretty much only find in the New York area. You're not going to find those ethnic groceries in Iowa (no disrespect to anyone from Iowa). That being said, this particular H-mart is not particularly cheap but that's a given considering that it is in the Morningside Heights neighborhood where there are a lot of Columbia students. But you can find a good selection of Asian groceries, hot foods to go, some baked goods to go, even housewares like plates and dishes that you can't find elsewhere in the neighborhood. Sure you could probably go to Flushing for cheaper things but that's an hour plus away from the area. The H-mart is a welcome addition to the neighborhood. read more

Despite being one of the smallest hmarts I've ever been in, the selection is not lacking at all! I especially enjoyed all of the ready to go meals. I did end up getting a stomach bug after eating my leftover but maybe that's on me because I picked it up before going to the airport and then ate the rest the next day. So maybe don't travel with these. But the workers are still so friendly even when they're packed. The lady checking me out ended up giving me free hand lotion! This Hmart is a good resource for Asian groceries in this neighborhood, as one of the smaller city-format stores (as I like to call them) that has a much tighter footprint aka store space, they manage to efficiently pack a very broad variety of products for all your Korean, Asian, and some non-Asian supermarket needs. Being in UWS it is priced higher than your average suburban Hmart but not too extravagant in comparison to some other UWS stores. Walking into the store there's a smallish fresh vegetables and fruit section, followed by refrigerated dairy and drinks, refrigerated shelf of various kimchi and panchan, and aisles of marked with different categories of products. I do have to give a shoutout to the breadth of fresh prepared Korean food they carry, both hot and cold--Korean fried chicken, kimbaps, gyudon and tempura items, sashimi and sushi grade fish, dukbokgi, kimchi pancakes, bakery items, etc. a terrific spot to grab a quick meal to go or a snack. Aside from their very extensive ramen aisle and drinks aisle (think teas, coffees (powdered mixes and beans), citron tea, herbal supplements, juice, boxed drinks), they also have a couple aisles of assorted housewares and bath/beauty products. read more

The manager at the West 110th Street and Broadway location, Mr. Hwang, has demonstrated consistent incompetence in his role. His communication skills are poor, making it difficult for customers to be understood without repeating themselves multiple times. This creates unnecessary frustration and diminishes the customer experience. Additionally, his management and coordination appear slow and ineffective, which reflects poorly on the store as a whole. We strongly urge you to consider replacing him with someone more qualified and professional. Until significant improvements are made in the leadership at this location, we have no intention of returning. We don't even want to see him around in the neighborhood...... I look to my right and surprise...a security guard comes round the corner nearly bumping right into me. They joke with each other for a minute and the security guard leaves. I peep the situation immediately and so I end up moving down the row of frozen foods because I'm just curious to see what happens next. Guess what? The employee actually FOLLOWS me and then pretends to organize another clearly organized case. So I speak to him. This man actually pretends like he doesn't hear me. Absolutely wild and rude. I have shopped religiously at California's H Marts before moving to NYC. The prices in California are much cheaper. I think this H Mart location price gouges because they know they have a captive audience of Asian students at Columbia. I would expect this type of price gouging at a local NYC bodega. The price is a little higher than some other stores but the quality is very good and they do have some stuff other grocery stores don't have. When I saw the imported Kit Kat's, different types of ramen and even their abundant produce department; I stayed! I swear by their grapefruits. It's a bit pricey in here - I'm sure importing matcha green tea Kit Kat's isn't cheap - but I usually will spend $9 to try a Flavor you can't readily get here. I also recommend them over other basically glorified bodegas in the hood. You get for regular every day items (think: eggs, milk, cheese) for a decent price. I've lived in Morningside Heights for 7ish years now and have been to this hmart SO MANY times. As a Latina, I would say I'm not their usually customer but I've never felt out of place there. The staff does try to make this store inclusive and I very specifically go there for the Asian veggies. And if they're ever out of stock of something I just go up to the staff and ask if they have any in the back and they usually go check for me. They do welcome any customer of any background, at the end of the day they want you to spend money there and are happy to help. There seems to be a lot of debating about the African American security guards in these reviews but to give you a little context, when I first moved here and started visiting this store, they only had 1 a few years ago and it would usually be on weekend when it gets busy. In recent years shoplifting in the area has gotten out of hand. If you go to Whole Foods at Columbus Av on 96th/100 they also have security that walks around the store. And at the TJMaxx their security guard wears a bullet proof vests. I constantly see cop cars outside those stores arresting people for shoplifting. When I went to home goods recently asked asked for bedsheets they said they stopped stocking them for a while because they were the top item being stolen. Yes the security at hmart does circles around the store but if you're not stealing then you shouldn't feel awkward about it. THEY LITERALLY WATCH EVERYONE EQUALLY. Whether your black, brown, white, Asian, it's their job to be on their toes and keep an eye out. And since they work in a really busy market, you know there has to be some shoplifting here and there so they got hired to cut down on that. Now the checking receipts is new, they hadn't done that in recent months, but I guess they check receipts at Costco too so it might just be an update on store policy. And as someone who has worked retail i can say that managers do bag checks all the time, it's literally company policy at any retail location. I would also add that the prices for a lot of their products is really great. It rivals Trader Joe's on 92nd and Whole Foods on 96th. I get a decent amount of veggies for an affordable price. Now we're not talking like whole sale Costco prices, but they are decent for the amount that you get. Like this package of long peppers that would last me a week is only $4. I think that's a steal especially in Manhattan where everything is expensive! Like if I go to a restaurant to get Kimbab, it'll be like $12/$15 so why not just get it at hmart or buy the ingredients there and make it myself? But I do see some things that are more expensive than others but that can't be helped especially if it's imported. All and all, this hmart is a solid grocery store options. The security guards recognize the regulars and tend to say "hi" or as they check your receipt they'll tell you to "have a nice afternoon/rest of your day." They're polite guys. And the staff is always happy to help you. I just knocked down a star because I use to go to a Super HMart in my hometown and they sell liquor there. Your very typical H-mart with a pretty good selection of produce like fruits. They had a good variety of unique fruits like to colors of Dragon fruits. The store itself is very neatly organized, and very clean. Overall a great location, good selection. Overpriced? Yes but lots of stuff here you will not find at Whole Foods. Before H Mart took over the entirely useless D'Ag that was here previously, I did not have a nearby Asian grocery supermarket and my existence suffered for it. Where else could I go to grab Chinese pickled veggies on a whim, even if I no longer had a rice cooker and didn't have the faintest idea how to make congee. Or pork floss (that hairy, shredded mess that prompted my middle school friends to joke it looked like my hair) or thousand year egg (which had won me first prize in an ad hoc dorm-room competition for who could eat the grossest thing). Trader Joe's will always be first in my heart but their ethnic foods selection - don't even get me started on the branding - is not quite up to snuff. Enter H Mart. Enter the vast quantity of marinated meats: bulgogi, chicken wings/drumsticks, pork. Enter the entire aisle dedicated to instant ramen, both the kind in a bag and the kind in a plastic bowl, putting Maruchan and Instant Noodle to shame. Enter the aisles filled with Asian snacks and candies. And don't even get me started on the prepared food selection. I dare anyone coming here with a set grocery list to not walk out with some sort of last-minute treat in their bag. Yes, I know the selection may not be as wide as that of the H Mart in downtown or across the river in Edgewater. Yes, the aisles are super crowded, particularly the area near all the china. Yes, the produce is Zabar-level expensiveness and you'll pick up and put down a box of enormous, organic blueberries and wonder if $13 is worth it. No, it really might not be. My H Mart go-tos: 1) Shin Ramen black - thicker noodles, stronger sauce than the original Shin. 2) The long sheets of seaweed that I use to make crappy carb-less sushi and end up just eating plain, with little bits raining all over my lap. 3) The wall of prepared banchan. I was followed and noticed that non-white customers were being followed by security. Staff and security are hostile and create an unsafe environment for customers.
