Was in TN to visit family and decided on staying on the east side of Knoxville that offered low cost hotel options for a long weekend. Unfamiliar with area, I was disappointed to learn there wasn't a bunch of highly rated options near my hotel. I'd have to go downtown. That was EXCEPT for Habaneros. And who doesn't like Mexican food ? This hidden gem tucked in an area off the side of the road that you might otherwise notice (at least for me) while driving by. And WHAT A SHAME as this place is EXCELLENT. I went to eat at Habaneros on a Saturday night. When I visited it was busy but not packed, the walls inside were well decorated and I didn't have to wait for seating. The menu essentially said "Try my fajitas" they are best, so I ordered them. While waiting they brought me chips and salsa. The salsa they had was delicious. They serve domestic beers (plus Coronas) there if you want an alcoholic beverage but that's about it. That's okay for me though, a Corona was all I needed. Local IPAs don't pair well with Fajitas IMO. FAJITAS COME OUT. Exactly what the menu said. Sizzling, delicious, seasoning was flavorful and the portions for all the condiments/ingredients were exactly what I needed to fill each of the tortillas. Service was fast and they never forgot about me, consistently checking in on me to ensure I had everything I needed. If you live in or around the Knoxville area and you haven't had Habaneros, please do so. You won't regret the trip. read more

My husband and I dined here for the first time the other day and enjoyed it. I've heard great reviews about this place and we wanted to branch out from our usual Mexican spots. Our waiter was wonderful and the service was prompt. We both agreed the salsa lacked flavor, but were pleased with our entrées. My husband ordered the street tacos and I had the chicken chimichanga. The portions are large and we had plenty of leftovers. We had an overall positive experience and I'm glad we tried it! Great little spot- it's surprisingly bigger than it looks on the outside! There's two dining areas. The food we had was good- solid Americanized Mexican. His food was edible, very basic flavor, nothing to write home about, but my dish was terrible. I guess we are used to a different kind of soup up north. This soup here lacked flavor, mainly water, a scoop of tomato sauce, carrot, yellow squash and zucchini slices and a few pieces of chicken breast. Not even the flavor of chicken stock. No cilantro. No onion. Just rather blah but the size was generous. We also had the "street" taco plate. Here they used flour tortillas inexplicably. Maybe they had a salsa bar somewhere that we didn't know about but it lacked a good salsa with it. Overall, would just not recommend. Maybe we just didn't have what the restaurant is good at but I would not recommend the chicken soup or the street tacos. FYI, we did order a chicken sandwich for my 6 yo. The lunch specials were extensive and interesting including combination plates, a la carte items and more. The salsa and chips were decent! We grabbed a couple of specials and had some leftovers! The value was fantastic for a quick in and out lunch in the air conditioning after a morning at the zoo. All of th seating was spread out and nobody was too loud or talking over each other. Overall a pretty pleasant experience! I was a LITTLE underwhelmed by the cook of the steak in my enchilada as well as a slight weird flavor on the rice (could've been the utensils? Habaneros is definitely my favorite Mexican restaurant in Knoxville. They have a large selection of traditional Mexican fare and some unique creations of their own. The atmosphere is nice. All tables are dressed with a large selection of hot sauces. My wife and I really love the salsa that they serve with tortilla chips. It's the perfect blend of traditional ingredients and the texture is perfect. It's thick enough to not run off the edge of your chips but thin enough to not be chunky and it's perfect every time. I highly recommend the Nachos Habaneros. They are the king of nachos. They have shrimp, chicken, beef, and a wonderful queso blanch. They top the nachos with sour cream, pico de gallo, guacamole, and roasted peppers. You can't go wrong with this dish. I'ma be honest -- most Mexican food restaurants on roadtrips ain't all that. So when we pulled up to Habaneros, our expectations were pretty dang low. But then we realized the parking lot was full. Hunh. They had a bunch of a la carte options, but they all meat in them. So I took a chance and asked for shrimp tacos a la carte. The waiter checked to see if that was doable and ... it was. So we ordered. And we were convinced he didn't get our order right. And I was still thinking that my food would be saturated in grease or sauce and we'd be miserable getting back on the road. But here we were and we were just going to make due. But - oh! Our order not only came out perfectly, it was to our ultimate satisfaction. The grilled shrimp had so much flavor, that I couldn't even bear to add any salsa. Ka-pow! Sooooo tasty! And the hubs loved his chicken fajita salad. He rarely remarks that a salad is good, so this was a huge win. We were both delightfully surprised! And then the check came and then we laughed -- literally laughed -- about how affordable it was. When we went to the cashier up front to pay, they asked us how everything was so we gushed about how wonderful everything was. And as we were leaving, the parking lot was still full. We have been hearing good things about this restaurant so we decided to give it a try. The ambience is definitely Mexican. It is extremely clean and the staff are friendly. The menu is fairly large and the prices are average. There were four of us. One had the Nachos Supreme, the others had assorted combos with chicken enchiladas, chicken tacos and Chile rellenos. We started with a queso fundido appetizer that was DELICIOUS! The caramelized cheese on the base with ooey-gooey cheesy goodness on top with chorizo and perfectly sautéed onions. I could have made a meal of it by itself. The food was served fresh, hot and pleasantly plated. The margaritas were not lacking in tequila. Overall a positive experience. We were in town for a Volunteers game and looking for Mexican food as an option when we stumbled upon this gem. The staff were very friendly and welcoming, and the food was absolutely delicious and at prices that made me think of an era some 20 to 30 years ago! Despite being a relatively small restaurant, there was plenty of seating with two entire sides of the building dedicated to the dining areas. We sat on the side with the bar and were able to catch some of the other football games while we ate our lunch. Absolutely would recommend this place and will definitely come back when I'm in town again. read more

Great if you like food poisoning. I was sick for two days after eating here. Something in the molcajete was spoiled. I woke up sick to my stomach and later threw up. When I opened the fridge the next day, it smelled awful. My friend's meal didn't have the same effect on him, but he only had a salad. The only good thing I can say is that their top shelf margaritas were good. The alcohol probably killed some of the bacteria and saved me from being even sicker. I have eaten many items in the menu but a few of my go to meals are as follows: 1. Fajitas - ample amount of meat and veggies with a big side of salad, pick de Gallo, sour cream and guacamole. 2. Carnitas - fried pork pieces with a green salsa covering the meal with rice in the side. A mouthful of flavor in each bite that won't have you looking back. 3. My dad and I both got the fajitas meal which came with rice, beans, sour cream, lettuce, guacamole, tortillas and pico de gallo with shredded cheese melted on top of the chicken! They serve you complimentary chips and salsa when you're seated, I loved that hey had separate bowls and a mini pitcher of salsa so each person could have their own side of salsa! The restaurant was decorated fun, they have a cute little bar hut, and decorations all over. I bet this place would be fun to go to after work and grab a drink! The customer service was top notch, our waiter was super friendly and was always on top of filling our drinks and asking if we needed anything, I felt like we were really taken care of from the moment we walked in! The food was just meh. The chips and salsa was like eating just tomatoes, had to ask for a side of their Habanero sauce to mix-in inorder to spice it up. The tacos are only delivered literally with rice and beans (the beans are literally from a can). Unfortunately for me they delivered the rice and beans first, I ate them and then my tacos showed up later (after the server delivered the wrong plates with the other table and had to re-send) and low and behold I just a tortilla and the meat. No lettuce or cheese, nothing. I asked the server and he said nothing else goes with it other than the rice or beans. My house margarita was below par too, you could tell it was just a mix.
