We were in Hammond with the family on a recent Saturday and craving Mexican. La Hacienda Azteca hit the spot! Thumbs up all around. Our kids loved their tacos. I'm blown away from some of these reviews. This place probably had some of the best, if not the best, food in NWI. And before I get to the food, I loved the ambiance, they had a guy playing a guitar and singing, the staff was welcoming and on top of things. There was really nothing to gripe about. Then the food came out... I had the Especialidad de la Casa. It was one of the best Mexican dishes I've had and I've lived in Mexico. Absolutely fantastic. The tortillas were homemade (or so it seemed). Super good, fresh. Then the waiter provided us dessert options.... turns out he makes the tres leches cake himself. It happens to be one of my very favorite desserts and probably one of the best versions of this cakes I've had. Hand's down we will be back here again. The exterior of this place seemed mysterious. I had a good guess that I was about to be served authentic food and that guess was correct! My significant other and I walked inside and we were quickly assigned to a booth to sit at. We were given complimentary chips and salsa, as well as two sauces in bottles. The chips and salsa were great! The green sauce was very good. The red sauce was spicy, but it was good. We were even given an additional basket of tasty chips at no charge. I went with a Diet Coke from Soft Drinks for $2.99 and from the Mix Drinks, I chose a Margarita for $10.00 Lg. I got it on the rocks with salt around the rim. The Diet Coke was awesome and so was the free refill. The Margarita was fantastic! It was by far the best I have had in a long time! It even lasted me almost the entire duration of my visit. From the Combinaciones section, we ordered the Azteca. It had One chicken enchilada, one pork tostada, one steak taco $12.99. We also ordered the Alambre Mixto. It was Pollo, chorizo ,Asada choice of tortilla $13.99. We went with corn for the tortilla choice. The enchilada was amazing! It was packed with flavor. The pork tostada surprised me with how many ingredients it was able to be composed of. The flavor was definitely there! The steak taco was gone pretty fast. I think it's safe to say that I loved it. The Azteca turned out to be a great choice! The Alambre Mixto had so much meat. It was all cooked excellent. The corn tortillas were pleasant. I ended up loving the Alambre Mixto just as much as the Azteca. The service was wonderful. Our server was fast and polite. There were plenty of employees that assisted him with our table throughout our visit to ensure we were taken care of and that everything was clean. Overall, I was highly impressed! My husband and I stopped in for a bite to eat. I read the reviews online (Yelp and Google) and we decided to take a chance. It was crowded and we had to wait a short time for a table. Once we got seated we were at a table were there looked like some construction had taken place. That should have been an indication of what was going to happen next. So disappointing it's not what it used to be. The food had no flavor, and the beef tasted old. What happened? They used to be so good, then they got too busy and no parking so we (lately) ended up at Taco Real . We finally got a parking spot and was surprised how empty it was. And the new name...Hacienda San Jose? The server assured us they were Hacienda Azteca! Our Carne Asada was over cooked and so dried up it was like beef jerky/shoe leather. My son's was cooked better so we showed the other server (mind you, ours disappeared after taking our order) after several minutes, they brought a properly cooked Carne Asada. Now, all staff was coming out to see what was wrong, we said we are fine now! Then they all retreated back into hiding. We waited 25 minutes after we were done eating, no bill so at the register I had the hostess look it up-$85 for 2 carne asada dinners, 1 steak fajita, 2 coronas, and a soda. They charged for the correctly cooked carne asada. Now I know why the restaurant was empty, bad food, bad service ( unless you show them shoe leather steak) then overpriced food. Adding the corrected steak on to the bill was a shame. We will not be back. read more

On 4/13/23 Service was terrible & we got food poisoning.....It took so long to take our order. They forgot to put steak on my nachos, hardly any beans or cheese on my nachos. Had to flag them down to fix my order and to get drink refills. To make matters worse, my fiancé and I got sick from our meal. The only thing similar that we ate was the salsa, dry steak & beans. Not going to list our graphic illnesses from the food poisoning. We are still feeling stomach pain the next day. Food didn't even taste good. I also had to tell the cashier how much change he need to give me after I paid the bill. We'll never go back and we don't recommend anyone going. This Review is for Friday October 9, 2020 So this review is based on few issues for that day only, not really the food, but more of phone service, order instructions, and their delivery service app. So we first were going to place an order over the phone, but no one picked up the phone, it went to voice mail and the voice mail box was full, not a great start for business, sadly these guys get super busy whether it is the week or weekend as my mother goes there times to time as she lives real close to this establishment. So my Lady and I placed an order via the seamless app. e ordered the following: 2 Large orders of Caldo De Res witch comes with rice and garnishment (so 2 rice and 2 garnishments) We ordered 1 Ground Beef and 1 chicken tostada and we ordered the flauta dinner. When it came time for our order to be delivered a grubhub delivery service person delivered our food instead and well this is where a headache began: When we received our order, everything but the flauta dinner was there, we got only 1 flauta, we paid fulled price for that dinner, when we called the deliver person he argued that we paid or an appetizer, which was wrong, so we tried to yet again call La Hacienda Azteca to correct the order, but a full voice mail box again, so we filed a dispute with seamless and received refund. We want to mention that seamless receipts and grubhub receipts re different, I am unsure what the delivery person sees, but if he had showed us his receipt and looked at ours he would have seen their is possible bug in his or seamless system, instead he wanted to give us an attitude on the phone and complain how we had to pay extra to correct our order. Just beware of the applications, because either the establishment made a mistake or it is the app, bottom line is you can get ripped off of what you pay for and not get your meal. If you want to make sure you get proper and correct order, just go into the establishment and place your order to go. read more

Not a fan. At. All. Sorry to say but the only reason for the star was the Margarita. Everything else tanked. To say my carne asada was like shoe leather would insult shoe leather. Maybe since we went during the last hour of the restaurant but it was pretty packed still for me to have had the toughest, driest 3 pieces of meat ever. I have never received a carne asada in pieces so that was new. It could have been left over from lunch and they warmed it up (barely) and put in on a plate to serve. My husband had the chicken enchiladas and did not fare much better. There was barely any seasoning. The beans were tasteless and the rice was okay. The salsa was runny for our tastes and full of onions but salsa can vary day to day so we take that into account. Perhaps we just picked the wrong meals as everyone else seemed to dig into theirs. It is an older place as evidenced by the bathroom but still decent. The wait staff was friendly but not enough to make up for the plate I got. Normally I would give a spot another chance but if that is the meat choice, it does not even hit my radar. read more

Eat at this place! It's great! The service is friendly and attentive . They had one of the best seafood cocktails that I have had in a long time. I had octopus and shrimp in the cocktail. I bought 2 burritos & 2 tacos from this establishment & the food was absolutely terrible!!! My burritos were dripping liquid & the container it came in was wet all at the bottom. The meat had no taste, like it was boiled or something. The burritos had no beans, rice, but was filled with lettuce & tomatoes, The tacos were tasteless & cold. There is nothing special or out of the ordinary to report about this low end Mexican eatery. I was told that this was the real thing and that the food was authentic and made like from Mexico. It's amazing how some people exaggerate and embellish to justify their own fantasy conception of fine Mexican cuisine. The taco chips were as hard as Formica sample chips from a home improvement store, my chili rellenos was blah and tasteless. The beans had too much lard in them or something. My co-worker and I ordered out a few days ago and picked food up from here. The food was delicious. I ordered chiles rellenos and chips & guac and my co-worker ordered some enchiladas. She says they were good, too. My plate was delicious though not cooked all the way (the cheese inside the peppers were still in block form and not melted in some spots) but that didn't stop me. When I called to order, I asked for some hot sauce and they gave me some awesome stuff that was great to use! They were really nice when I called and when we picked the food up and the prices were reasonable. I'd like to dine in to check it out next time. read more
