Fort Dodge is one of the most diverse towns in Iowa, so some of the restaurants have a fair level of authenticity. Hacienda Vieja has be a favorite of my family since it opened. The Tacos el Pastor are great. The burritos are more than i can eat. We always try something new if available. I like to start with, they bring cheese dip along with salsa at no extra charge. On my first visit I had the El Tapitio, flank steak served with scallops, shrimp, and mushrooms. The seafood is served in a butter spiced sauce that is amazing. I poured it on everything. Dipped my steak in it and even wanted to bath in it. I also enjoyed a margarita, it was chilled perfectly and tasted like a cup full of love. On my second visit I ordered the Chili Verde. The sauce lacked any flavor and the pork was dry. The sauce was thin almost like it was watered down. Not a single tomatillo to be seen. The portion size was small and I left a little hungry. Service on both visits lacked a little, but they did just open, so they may be fine tuning still. I have high hopes for this place. Grimes hasn't had a Mexican place in a few years. Not that driving into DeMo is a hassle or anything just nice to have something close. Two visits and I'm on the fence one great meal, one lacking in flavor and portion size. Food was great but their chorizo was not chorizo, tasted like ground beef with a little seasoning idk how they can be proud to serve that.

Pros: They bring queso with the chips and salsa free of charge. Everything was tasty, but nothing to write home about. Cons: Arrived at 7pm, seated at 7:15, received food at 8pm. Slow service. In need of a good front manager to manage staff, seating, and quick C&S to the tables. Small portions compared to other local places. Server rarely checked in. They are new, and that should forgive a lot. I really want them to succeed because we need great Mexican fare in Grimes. I hope they can step up to the plate. I'll wait a month or two before I come back. read more

We were so looking forward to this place opening- but what a disappointment. Mine you- the food was tasty- but the service was slow, and the portions were small compared to the competition and price. They need to go to Cancun or El Barco in Urbandale and see how a local place runs. I had the chicken fajitas- overpriced and way too little portion for what you paid. By the way- who charges the same for chicken, steak or shrimp fajitas? They do. Doesn't make sense! The chimi's were ok- but lacked any seasoning in the chicken. We hope they make some changes- as they are new- but as of now...they won't survive. Too bad as we really need a great Mex food place in Grimes. read more

Have been their twice now, messed up my order both times but have resolved the issue right away. The portions are large and good. Not the best mexican food I've ever had but its tasty. The rice is nothing to brag about, but their shredded chicken is delicious. Will go back after a couple weeks once the growing pains have subsided. read more
