Only thing they need to do is help their staff be more prepared by providing enough sheets, blankets, gowns and other necessities for the patients. You can see the staff are embarrassed which no fault of theirs. I would give it a 5 star but the necessities are important.

Although I do have to mention someone in particular for being amazing - I believe his name was Bishop . my mother Adored Bishop and she always felt safe when he was there. He took such good care of my mother and I am so thankful for that. Unfortunately, he was the exception. Most of the time they left my mom for hours when she needed something and ultimately they allowed an infection to ravage her legs. We asked for the dressing to be changed and for better care to be taken because we knew it was serious. She was in so much pain and they consistently dismissed it as normal pain. They did not want us to take her back to the hospital (it was made to seem that we were being alarmists) , however, WE called an ambulance to have her transported back to the hospital. Sadly, she died just 4 days later. I regret ever even placing her in this facility and feel even worse that we didn't get her out of there sooner.

The woman from the home called me at 6:25am said they found my mom unresponsive at 5:55am. No, I'm sorry for your loss or anything. No help in telling me what do I do NOW!! Her Roommate heard her calling for help at 3am and this was not even ADDRESSED only by one nurse that called the roomate a liar...Cardiac arrest. I found that out from the funeral director the next day!! When I got there to see my mom's body around 9am, EVEYONE staff especially were shocked! My mom was doing great. The day nurses and aids were good with her. I was there practically everyday with my mom's only grandchild and she was fine the day before!!! Adam Goldfarb the Dr, her primary that visited her almost every morning called me one week later, to say that he was surprised too!! SO WHAT HAPPENED? NOBODY CHECKED ON HER ALL NIGHT???? understaffed and under paid?? How could my mom not be checked on all night???? this is a picture the day before she died... something happened, someone was not doing what they were supposed to... oh and also I had to insist that my mom's roommate be removed from the room when I got there because I felt it was inappropriate to have this poor paralyzed woman have to see all this. Tess is the he's nurse on the 2nd floor. When I got there questioning who saw my mom last, she was reluctant to go get my mom's chart, she just stared at me clueless. There is a dead patient, you don't have her chart!! I just can't believe I left my mom in the care of these heartless people...that handled her death so poorly. And the worst part is they smile at admissions and hold your hand signing over your life savings, then when it really matters, they stare at u with no ANSWER and no help dealing with the absolute biggest fear losing my mom...

My mom had fallen in a parking lot and had a small fracture to the hip. She was on the 3rd floor for 2+ weeks. Rehab and PT were strong with an excellent and caring team. I am grateful to them. She got PT twice a day -- because we advocated/nagged/insisted. A few times they forgot to come get her from her room. My most important recommendation is: YOU WILL NEED TO ADVOCATE FOR YOUR LOVED ONE AT ALARIS! Nursing and especially the aides were hit or miss in responsiveness. The response at night is poor to non-existent. The first few nights, my mom rang the bell for help to the bathroom (she was not allowed to go by herself). No one came. After 1-1/2 hours she simply got into the wheelchair herself and went. From then on, that's what she did because, again, the staff is very, very slow to respond at night, if at all. The facility appeared to be short-staffed, especially at night. Some aides (especially the male aides) were lovely and warm and we so appreciated their kind words to my mom. Others were curt to the point of being rude. One morning, when my mom rang for help, after a good while, the aide walked in and with no smile or kindness, said "Yes?" as if the patients are an imposition. The senior nursing staff showed concern and checked in with my mom more often after we advocated/nagged/insisted/got their cell numbers. Be prepared to supplement with your own food too. My mom found the food quality poor with limited choices and little that was healthy and nourishing. We brought her egg or cheese sandwiches on whole wheat bread, fruit salad, etc. Another strange realization was that the bed sheets had holes in them, even after they changed them (which they do very regularly). It's as if the facility doesn't have the money or chooses not to invest in those sorts of supplies. Bottom line: Good PT, everything else is hit or miss. Be prepared to speak up.

While he seemed knowledgeable, his bedside manner was lacking. There was no compassion there. I didn't feel comfortable discussing another important personal health matter with him because of his demeanor. At the end of the day, I had my physical done and that's what matters but it wasn't the most positive experience. Fast forward to two months later. I made an appointment for 9AM for my follow up. I arrive at 8:55. When I arrive there is one other patient sitting and waiting to be seen. As I sit down, she is called in for Dr. Sims. I wait... wait and wait.... 45 minutes later I ask the nurse if my appointment was for 9 or 9:30. She told me it was 9:00 but there was another doctor there and there were no rooms available for me to be seen. That sounded like a crock of shit to me because the entire 45 minutes I was there, no patients came in or out. At 45 minutes, I walked out. And I felt good doing so. I didn't like him anyway and I don't wait 45 minutes for anyone. My time is just as valuable and as precious as his and if this is how patients are treated, I don't need to go there. I am currently having my records forwarded to another doctor. Additionally I met with Dr. Imbornone (sp?) on one occasion for an upper respiratory infection. Again, a very competent doctor but no bedside manner whatsoever. Very dry, no compassion, very clinical. My infection went away with the meds he gave me but there was no connection there. He didn't even shake my hand. Again, I guess this is how the doctors are there and for some people, that works. For me, I like a little more.

I have always found him to be gracious and understanding. Don't get me wrong. He IS a doctor, so he DOES sometimes go into clinical mode, but....if you ask him to break it down into layman's terms, he will. He IS a doctor, and he is going to tell you not to do all of the fun stuff that you wanna do (What? I can't eat cheeseburgers everyday?) But, if you ask him to deal in reality, he will certainly do so. Sorry that you didn't have a good experience, Jen. I have taken off a star solely for the front desk. Sometimes getting someone to answer the phone is like pulling teeth. Edited to add the following: I remember one time I went in to see Dr. Sims and I was feeling particularly miserable. I must have looked incredibly miserable because he actually gave me a hug. The hug wasn't inappropriate or creepy, it was actually very kind. Kudos, Dr. Sims!

Over four days nobody cleaned the…read morepatient's room and trash was allowed to pile up, until I finally moved it outside the room where it sat in plain view of staff for hours --"not my job" they must all be thinking--so much for worrying about germs. At one point a tech arrived unscheduled to take some kind of a test. The patient had just moved from the bed to a chair to eat dinner and asked if the tech could come back in a few minutes. "Well, I'm here now" was the answer. We then we explained it would difficult for my mom to get back into bed for the test he replied , "I guess I will come back in a few days" and left. So what is the point of the test of it can be done in a few days? Also, how about some warning of the time it is planned so the patient and family can prepare and be ready? Not at HUMC. Way understaffed and apparently poorly trained. Here is some advice to the staff sitting at desks typing into terminals or looking at their phones--if you see a problem and you can fix it--do it, even if it isn't your job. A patient family member comes out and asks for help, don't say, "I'll find her nurse," ask these questions, "what is the problem? is there something I can help you with". And if you can do it, don't pass the buck. That is not how patient care is done. If you have to go to a hospital look at other options or make sure you have a friend or family member there to watch over you, otherwise you may spend half a day looking at trash in your room waiting for someone to respond to your call button for help. Run, don't walk away.
