If you're looking for something to do while you're in bodega bay, you can try coming to this small trout pond. It is easy to miss when you're on the highway, but if you're driving from Petaluma, it'll be on your right. You have to look for the sign and the little dirt road that takes you there. I came here during labor day weekend last year and the weather was nice, we went to the tiny shack near the parking lot (with porto johns) we rented fishing rods and bought a little container of live worms as bait. You walk down to the tiny lake, with a wooden little dock that extends into the pond. Most of the area around the pond is pretty dusty and dry, you probably want to bring something to sit on, def bring sun block and a hat, not much shade, theres like one picnic table with a bbq grill, and tons of drinks to keep you hydrated. Lots of families here bring children. You gotta be patient, the fish (mostly rainbow trout) are pretty smart, they don't just bite b/c they want to eat since everyone is throwing crap into the lake, some people (like us) left empty handed with a tan, and some people (the kids) left with like 4 fish within a couple hours, most of the fish I saw caught this day were pretty small like 8 inches? Pretty hit or miss I guess. But whats really fun is that there are TONS of tiny froggies and dragon flies everywhere. One of the rules are that you can't catch and release, and you cannot catch the frogs. They have workers watching here and there so I wouldn't take my chances!! I think I had most fun not catching fish, but playing around with the froggies. They're so cute!!! I am a fishing rookie. I never caught anything in my life, nor have I gone fishing often. This is a good place to get the fishing atmosphere and feel good about catching something. Staff are very helpful. You can rent poles and worms from the shop for not much money. Where the money adds up is the fish you catch. You cannot catch and release any fish. And for 8 fish I think we paid around $50-60 bucks, not including the rented gear. (Hence missing the 5th star) If you're going to come here, read the following: 1. It's easy to miss that sign from Highway 1. Keep a look out when you are close to the ranch. 2. Roads are narrow/gravel. Leave the Mercedes at home. 3. Very enjoyable - I take my grandson there one or two times a year. Upper pond has the bigger fish. Be prepared to do real fishing, trying worms, different power baits, even lures. Came here from 12-3pm and stood in the heavy winds for hours trying to catch fish. Nada. Many people around us didn't catch a thing either. This is such a scam. They also charge admission fee even if you aren't fishing! When we returned our poles and told the lady we didn't catch anything she told us that if we come back and let her know we didn't catch anything the prior time they would waive our admission fee. Really? I guess lots of people don't catch a single thing for this policy to be put in place. Also when we parked our car in the upper area on the grass the lady that worked in the horse ride booth yelled at us from across the road. She shouted at us,," You know better than to park like that on the grass !!" Well maybe you all should put up some signs ? This place was great! We took our kids here because they love to fish. The problem with kids and fishing is that fishing usually takes a lot patience and kids don't have much of that! This was great for kids because they were really able to catch fish quickly and easily and learn the whole process without having to wait hours in between catching fish. We were there for less than 2 hours and left with 8 fish. They cleaned the fish for us for a small charge and packed them on ice for us. Very positive experience here. I took my two boys (7 and 10) out for their first time fishing. We rented poles, purchased some bait and set out on an adventure. Both my boys successfully tangled up the lines on not one or two, but 4 poles. Every time I brought the pole up there, the young woman who was manning the fort was exceptionally gracious and told me to grab another one. I was a little embarrassed because I was up there exchanging poles 4 times in a hour and a half. When we finally arrived to the point where we could cast and not get tangled up we settled in and BOOM both my boys caught little trout. Now keep in mind I've never fished before in my life, I get the concept but when I was looking at this little guy on the end of the line I asked my 10 year old "now what?". He went and got help and the owners 10 year old son came out and squared us away. Matthew was so awesome. He showed my boys and I how to get the hook out, talked to me all about how the lake is set up and where the best fish are, and even gave me some super pointers. I have to say that when he takes over the family business, it'll be in good hands. Matthew's dad was on hand and deftly cleaned our catch and was also super friendly. I came to fish for the first time with my good friend and we caught 4 rainbow tout, three were 11 inches and one was 10 inches, and it came out to $50 on top of the $5 each it cost to enter and $6 for worms. If you rent a pole it costs $12. They say fish under 7" are free but you can't catch and release so you are stuck with whatever size you get and the pricing is absurd. A 7"fish is 4.75 but a 11" fish is 11.75. The fish were incredibly narrow and didn't have hardly any meat on them which the guy who gutted them admitted. The water also was definitely dyed blue and looked murky and unhealthy. It seems like the water maybe overcrowded aswell due to how instantaneously you catch a fish after throwing your line in. Never coming back again!!! Should have just enjoyed a nice meal at the Tides instead!!! read more

Our party caught around 15 fish without realizing how expensive it was all going to be. And I'm pretty sure some of the 11 inchers weren't 11in. We ended up spending about 100 bux for the fish, worms, and some sodas. Even after that we probably would have had my daughter's 2nd birthday party there but after a really negative experience with the woman that rang us up, I just would rather not go through the hassle of trying to book and plan an event with this woman. This is an excellent trout pond for kids. Some trout ponds don't feel like the real experience - they're too small, boxed in, sometimes even paved, and feel contrived to the point where it doesn't feel like "real" fishing even to a small kid. At the same time, fishing at large lakes and rivers can be overwhelming for little kids, especially those who are learning. Hagemann's really strikes the right note. Kids will get a bite pretty quickly, but you need to use real gear, bait the hook properly, and show a bit of patience. It feels like real fishing to a kid, accelerated just enough to keep their interest and provide good feedback. When I go here with my kid, we usually catch about 4-6 trout in a couple of hours. Prices are reasonable, and depend on the size of the fish, usually averaging aobut $5 a fish. I'd come here more often if it weren't such a long drive from SF. read more

Our daughter and son in law took our 3 1/2 year old grandson and 11 year old grandaughter on vacation to Blue Lakes which included fishing but, the"little man" didn't catch any fish with his new pole. Bait and Switch! Sad day. Long drive for nothing. I saw a family pay $45 for pole rental, bait, and a few drinks. We came prepared with our own poles and snacks. But, we were there for 2 hours and left with 2 disappointed kids. There was a staff of 2. A lady in office collecting fees and selling stuff from store, and a guy on porch setting up poles for people to rent. There were a total of about 40 people fishing while we were there, and we saw only 2 fish caught by same guy. I got a crayfish on my line and so did another girl. Lots of frogs. Our first choice that day was Smith's Trout Farm near Calistoga, but that was the weekend of the fires. They don't charge anything to fish there (unlike Hagemann's Ranch $3 per person), and "catch fees" are half of Hagemann's. Had a great time today at Farm. Brought our own power bait and Spiderman and Barbie fishing pole with the kids. Staff was very sweet and made us feel taken care of. I thought it was a fair price to park and hang for the day. Only wish there was a bit more shade or cover for the kids. May bring my own porta tent next time to put over the picnic table if allowed. Awesome esp for first time fishing. They rent out all the gear you need including worms. The pond is pretty big. You can fish on the dock or anywhere around the pond. Afterwards, you walk back and they will wash it for you, measure it and charge you accordingly. Then they will put it in a bag of ice to go. OR you can bbq your catch right there on the farm. There are a couple of wooden chairs and tables, not many if you'd like to stay and have a picnic. We caught 5 or 6 trout. I saw a guy near us who caught more so it's unfortunate that other Yelpers didn't catch a single one. We've been telling people about this place and we plan to go back. read more

I am a single mom who has two boys. I took a trip to the trout farm and found it a wonderful place. There are picnic tables, BBQ's in a quiet setting by two ponds to have a fun time. Customer service was excellent from a college student "Dustin". He assisted us in baiting, catching fish and even cleaned them afterwards. While it can get expensive the prices are transparent both on the web and posted at the shop. The fish were measured on the table right in front of us. I have been to Hagemann Ranch seven or eight times over the past two years, trying to introduce my children to fishing. The ponds are charming and allow good access to the water on almost all sides. There is even a small dock (with rails) to help get closer to the center of the ponds. Poles are available to rent and they include the use of a net. You can buy nightcrawlers at the main office, so you don't need to bring any of your own supplies. You pay for the fish that you catch and it is by size. Usually after catching around 6-8 fish, our bill ends up being ~$50. They will clean and gut the fish for you there and then pack them on ice for you to take home. The trout, themselves, are on the small side, usually around 10 inches or so. But, they are pretty tasty if cooked right. My sons have thoroughly enjoyed going there and are now quite the experience little trout farm fishermen. They usually bug me once a month to get back out there. They even have picnic tables and BBQ pits if you want to have a group event. I imagine much of a customer's enjoyment is based on the number of fish caught, but we have usually had good luck there. We loved this place. I went with Grandma, a 4 year old and and 2 year old and really enjoyed sitting and fishing with my sons. It was a long trip but my 4 year old really enjoyed catching the fish himself. My 2 year old had a fish on his line but he didnt know how to reel it in so the fish got away. It wasnt that easy catching fish. They are really sneaky.. I enjoyed teaching my kids how to cast out and watch for the trout eat the worms. heheheh I was hoping my kids would get a giant trout but alas we got a little one. Hey i'm not complaining. A bit disappointed upon arrival, virtually no shade around pond and not much level ground for our folding chairs. They don't charge an "entry" fee, but they charge a fee to rent their poles, which is expected. But I was surprised there was a fee to use my own pole. It seems there is no catch and release at these types of privately owned fishing ponds. There is no fee if your fish is under 7 inches. We caught one fish, 8 inches, we were charged almost $6. We really enjoyed our time here! We came on Saturday of Labor Day weekend, and we found it to be pretty busy. But, the people working here were so friendly, and the people visiting and fishing were so fun to be around. Lots of families and little kids! We brought our dog to take in the sights and smells as well. Great morning out with the family. We also were fairly successful at catching fish. We had 3 rods going at a time, and we caught a total of 9 fish in less than 3 hours. We were stationed near the trees and the water/air pump. We had more bites in the morning, so arrive early! Overall, we walked away paying about $95 for the 9 fish, obviously not cheap, but you're paying for the experience and fun of it all, and we definitely did have fun! It was my husband's first time fishing, and he caught the most out of all of us, and was such an awesome way to introduce him into fishing. Not to mention, my avid fishing-loving father now has a reason to visit me in the Bay Area from southern California. We had the best time after with our fresh fish dinner, too. Very disappointed that their website said they are open June 1st but after planning a trip to Bodega bay, getting a hotel overnight to wake up and take the kids fishing they were closed and nobody would answer their phones. Terrible customer service to not be open when you say you will be but even if you were to close for the day you could at least answer your phones. read more
