Cute bistro right near the weekend farmer's market. The service was good, but then after delivering our food the waitress sort of dissapeared. The food itself was lackluster. The breakfast sandwich was just kind of sad. It had egg, meat and cheese on marbled rye, but I don't eat meat so asked for something like a slice of tomato instead, but it was just dry sort of like just taking toast and slapping an egg on it that I could make at home. We came here around lunch time and were so thrilled they serve breakfast at such a late time. They had quiche and I was kind of excited about it but when I go to order they are out along with a number of other items. Oh well. My partner orders biscuits and gravey and it was fabulous. I guess they could stay open on this alone. My Reuben sandwich tho was Pathetic and I mean pathetic. See my picture- the little meat it did have was riddled with fat hunks. I squeezed about 1/2 a fatty sandwich out of the whole one I was presented with. I would of sent this crap back but no- the waitress sucked beyond belief- we didn't see her after she delivered the food so how am I gonna send it back? She also had attitude like I was putting her out. there was hardly anybody in there to begin with and the waitress was MIA except to deliver food. The Haile Village Bistro deserves 5 stars just because of the surroundings! It is like being transported back in time. Haile Plantation, where the bistro is located has narrow, tree lined streets and has a calming effect on your soul. My folks and I stopped there after our first choice was closed because of staffing problems and bit am I glad they were! We sat outside on the patio and even though is was a chilly day, we were protected from the wind and were very comfortable. My Order I have completely forgotten what my mother and father ordered because I was blow away by mine! I had the Bacon Jam Burger which is cooked to order beef patty with cheddar cheese, fried green tomatoes, bacon, and topped with their bacon jam. With the burger you get your choice of cole slaw, potato salad, or fires. I ordered the fries as you can see in the picture but in hindsight, I think I should have gone with the cole slaw. The bistro wasn't too terribly busy but there was only on server, waiting on tables and believe me she was getting a work out! Nonetheless, our order was taken quickly and our food was delivered in record time. My burger was cooked exactly as I asked and was amazing. I do have to say the bacon wasn't exactly jam like but still great! The fries were goo though severely lacking in quantity. Overall, lunch was a roaring success! Desert I am not normally a desert person. I find deserts at most restaurants dull and boring. The deserts at Haile Village Bistro however, looked amazing and weren't your run of the mill deserts. They make all of their deserts in house and it shows. I had a slice of this lemon bar - cheese cake - heaven in a bite desert. It was worth every extra mile I would walk the next morning! Imagine being surrounded by subtle lemon everything that wraps you and transports you somewhere other than where you currently are. That folks, was this desert. If this slice was this good, I can't imagine how good all of theater desert choices are! Impressions The Haile Village Bistro is one of those places that you hope you eat at every time you go out. I recently moved to Gainesville and live in Haile Village. I love the walkability of this area, however, after two visits to Haile Village Bistro, sadly, I cannot positively recommend this place. The first time I went in for breakfast and ordered pancakes. They arrived burnt and couldn't believe the server actually brought them to the table. Today, I walked down to get a burger. I ordered it cooked medium and was served practically raw meat. Two visits, two fails on two items any basic cook should easily be able to make. We'd never heard from any of our friends getting brunch at this place before but we thought we'd check it out after the farmer's market. We waited a bit for the food, but it was understandable because there was a large party who sat before us. The food was better than I expected. Despite how it seems, it's a very cozy place. I recently went with a small group on a Sunday for lunch at noon. The chef(?) was unwilling to serve or modify a dish that is on the menu at other times of the day for my vegan friend because "it wasn't yet 2:00". It was about 12:30. I am not making that up. She had to order the only vegan option on the menu which was the hummus platter. I am not exaggerating when I say it was the most disgusting hummus I have ever tasted. The service was incredibly slow considering the number of tables that were filled. The other items ordered (a burger, a cheesesteak) were mediocre at best. The presentation was underwhelming. I came here for a high tea. Unfortunately my reservation was not recorded and we had quite a rude surprise when we got there. The manager sat us anyway and had the chef make additional food. She was very apologetic and attentive after we were seated. The food was good, but not $25+ a person good. We won't be back for this high tea. I will NEVER set food in this place again. After ordering a takeout Thanksgiving dinner more than a week in advance and confirming it the night before, I showed up at 5:15 p.m. on Thanksgiving to find the doors locked and no dinner awaiting me. Although the woman who was apparently in charge contradicted me -- and how is THAT good customer service? -- it was a staff foul-up that ruined my Thanksgiving dinner: I specifically asked the young woman who took my original order when I could pick up that dinner, and she specifically said, "Anytime between 12 noon and 7 p.m." Yet it turned out that the ONLY times I could've picked up my dinner were 12 noon or 3 p.m. -- the times for the sit-down meal inside the restaurant. Who would think that??? Wouldn't the restaurant be overwhelmed by the number of people showing up all at once??? NOWHERE on signs, Facebook advertising, etc., were the 12 noon and 3 p.m. pickup times for takeout dinners specified. And instead of trying to make things right by me when I showed up, the woman apparently in charge was combative and unapologetic and seemingly couldn't wait to be rid of me. That kind of bad behavior was shocking, and it guarantees that I'll never return for what would likely be more of it. P.S. I hope you do what I do: mostly disregard the positive reviews on this site, which could be planted by the business owner, and instead pay close attention to the negative reviews, which are more likely to be honest expressions of a person's experience at a business. read more

My best friend and I love to come here for excellant espresso drinks - really some of the best espresso drinks you'll find in Gainesville - and tasty sandwiches. The bistro has a relaxing atmosphere to catch up with friends and enjoy some well made breakfasts and lunch. If a server isn't around, ring the bell. Some of my favorite dishes include the Reuben and Chicken Kabob. Their monthly English Teas are always a treat. The waitress tonight never came to our table, and when we finally went inside to tell her what we wanted, she just said that the kitchen was closed at 7:40 pm..., so we went ahead and ordered tea. She brought the tea outside to us, and she never came back to see if we needed anything else. We went to get her again to get the check paid, and of course no tip. We have been coming here for many years. Last week we noticed the charming English decor was gone replaced with what seemed to be stickers from Michael's Craft Store and art from TJ Max. Further the menu choices had been reduced and Caesar salad no longer came with croutons. What was served was tasty. The desserts were still spectacular. Decor does matter. I hesitated to write a review for this business and I wish to stress this review is only regarding the British pub part of the Bistro. Indeed, they really need separate listings on Yelp for the Bistro and the Queen's Arms Pub, but for whatever reason it appears that has not happened and people are reviewing them as one and the same. I brought this matter to the bar manager's attention when I was there and she seemed unconcerned with it, by the way. My other reason to hesitate in writing this review was because the bar manager explained they are remodeling and she plans some changes to make the pub "better" though she didn't elaborate too much on what those are, aside from adding a ploughman's lunch, which I had asked about. Certainly, the menu is a place to start: for a "traditional British pub", their menu has only a couple real pub grub dishes and the rest is clearly bland, Americanized, hotel restaurant pastas and salads. And a couple Persian dishes because one of the owners is Iranian, apparently. I had an Asian shrimp salad that was low on shrimp and low on taste. It looked every bit like something a restaurant at a Holiday Inn in Bedford Heights, Ohio would serve and not traditional, British, nor at all inspired. Other areas that need attention: The televisions. As a British gentleman actually noted the night I was there, real British pubs don't constantly play the telly: if there is a TV, it will be one for football (soccer) matches, and that's pretty much it. You don't leave it on just to leave it on. The music. I've been to some delightful authentic pubs with authentic Celtic music, British rock, or something, anything, other than the Doobie Brothers and other light rock favorites of the golfing set playing here. I know it's Haile Plantation, but please . . . Some single-malt Scotches would be nice. I know it's a Britsih, not Scottish or Irish pub, but they could go this direction and probably make some money doing it. Also, I wanted an Old Fashioned but they couldn't make one because they couldn't find their bottle of bitters. As if, in a bar, they only have one bottle? Really? Overall, the food is pretty pricey for what it is. Again, if you want the experience of being at a restaurant in a mediocre hotel in the Midwest, this comes close. But most of all, people please: don't call it a "traditional British pub"--which is what's on the blasted sign--if it's basically a typical preppy bar in Florida. I don't care if your owner is British (apparently one is), I'm from the American South and I don't just naturally know how to run a BBQ joint because of that, either. If you want to call something traditional and British, make it what you present it to be, otherwise just call it "the bar at the Haile Bistro" or something. I hope with the remodeling and other changes they will improve--they have a nice space and this could be a great neighborhood spot. Limerock Road also has failed to impress me, but perhaps people in Haile are either a captive audience or else just are easily impressed and parted with their money, I don't know. read more

Earlier in the day, I had a fond memory of Welsh cakes from my trip to Wales 12 years prior. I tweeted that I wished I could have one. Then a friend took me to Haile Village Bistro, and there they were, stacked in a sugar-sprinkled pyramid: Pepperoni Hot Pockets. Joking - Welsh cakes, of course! I had a feeling that this dinner was meant to be. Our server was great. When we asked about certain Persian dishes, she brought small samples out of the kitchen! I considered asking about every dish. "So what exactly is this la-sa-gna?" The portions were ample. I had the fish and chips - tasty (added a photo). My friends - the chicken curry and spaghetti with meat sauce, and both dishes looked tempting. Afterward, we spoke with Jane (I'm sure her name was), the chef's wife and co-owner, and she was sweet. At the last minute, our group of 22 from out of town needed a place to eat. Fresco's, down the street, was our first choice for our group, as the majority wanted pasta. Unfortunately, the mosquitoes were more than we could handle and had to retreat to the Haile Village Bistro down the street for indoor dining. While Fresco's was packed inside, the Bistro was not (should have been our first clue!). While the Bistro was willing to accommodate us, (they had plenty of room) they seemed annoyed from the get go. The food was edible, but throughout the 2 HOURS we were there...the employees chastised us for not calling ahead. Yes, we would have loved to make reservations, but that was not possible. One would think the employees would be happy for customers and tips, yet you would never know it. Just okay food. Swordfish skewers have a sort of curry marinade that I didn't care for. Veggies were very bland tasting - no flavor. I must admit, the Shepherd's Pie was wonderful. Haile Village Bistro is a hidden gem in Gainesville on the extreme West side of town away from the all of the college hubbub (not that there is anything wrong with that). The owners are a nice British couple, both of whom greeted us at our table during the evening. For dinner, I had this wonderful Persian chicken dish called Fessenjan which is made with pomegranate juice. (I was told the cook is Persian decent.) I never had anything like it. Everything else we had right down to the Chicken Parmesan was a step above the usual. All of the dishes were quite reasonably priced, $10 - $13, and you got plenty to eat. From the bar, they had a lot of the usual British beers, but I really enjoyed the local Swamp Head Big Nose IPA (2 for 1 on this game day Saturday night). It was not overly bitter and had varying hop flavors going down - very nice example of this style. They also advertised varying types of martinis if you are in to that. Definitely don't pass up the desserts. They are all proudly displayed as you walk in the door. Everything looks fresh made, and sure tastes like it. The Baklava was one of the best I've every had and I also had a tasty almond torte. The only thing I would say was lacking was the wait staff. Ours did not seem to be very well trained, but tried hard and sought out answers to questions not known. The table behind us did not seem very happy with their wait staff either. These issues were not so bad as to blemish our evening, though. We enjoyed a two man band on our evening as well which was not too rowdy or loud, but just right for the atmosphere. Wish I could give it no stars. The pub and restaurant were great a few years ago. I don't know what happened, but they both are really bad. Half of the draft beers are out, the fryer was broken, most if the foods we inquired about were out and when my entree finally came (salmon) it was ice cold. As I had done several years ago, I ordered take out soup for my husband, who was having dental surgery across the street. Years ago, they had 4 different soups and I ordered one of each and they were wonderful. This time, they only had cream of broccoli available. So I ordered 4 of those. When I opened them at home they smelled and tasted burnt. Unlike years ago, he place was empty until happy hour, when it filled up with locals looking for a cheap drink. My advice: avoid this place like the plague. They are running it on a shoestring and it shows. read more

I really want to like this place. The atmosphere is great for both the bar and restaurant. The food is always good and I enjoy the bar side of the place. However, the service is ALWAYS painfully slow. It doesn't matter what time of day, if you are the only person in the restaurant, or if they are packed, you will be there for hours and your food will most likely come out in waves. If you have the time and patience, give the place a try! I will say the bar side food service seemed faster last time I went, but it might have just felt that way because I always had a full drink. read more
