New scale I just came up with for breweries! It's 1 to 10 on how traditional they are. A "1" would be a brewery that only makes a pale ale, a porter, a stout, a blonde, and an occasional IPA. (the most traditional, for an American craft brewery, at least) A "10" would be a brewery that makes marshmallow aged imperial seltzer sours. (Non-traditional to the point of parody) This isn't a scale for how "good" a brewery is, just for the types of beers you might find there. If you like classic American styles, a "1" would be the best. If you like sour milkshape apricot IPAs, a "10" would be best. I fall somewhere in middle, but leaning towards less-traditional. I would put Haines at a 4. The beers they make here are solid, but pretty safe. I loved everything I had, but the hoppy lager may have been my favorite! I love lagers, I love hops, these two never meet enough for my tastes! A huge disclaimer though (and they almost lost a star for these) is how brutally stubborn and rigid some of their policies are: - No tasters...this is...the reason lots of people go to breweries. This sounds like a law that Alaska would make to punish breweries with but this brewery whips themselves with this restriction. - 7pm closing time. Speaking of self-flagellation, this brewery closes an hour earlier than the already-early-state-mandated closing time of 8pm. It's pretty silly that the sun sets after 9:30pm in Haines, and the brewery closes at 7. - No growler fills for any growler but theirs. The reason given is cleanliness and not guaranteeing beer quality. However, the main thing that destroys beer quality these days is not microbes, it's oxygen, and they do not CO2 purge their growlers, so these are going to go bad in a week or two just like any other brewery...whether you buy a growler from them or not. The building and location, are awesome. They have a bright and sunny beer garden in the back. The building is new and squeaky clean, with high ceilings. I wish I could've gone when they had the old, folksy location though!

    Good beer is found here

This is a microbrewery in Haines, AK. They don't serve any food, it's a place to stop for a beer or two. I tried the Spruce Tip Ale - it's a delicious Ale with a slight raspberry finish from the spruce tips. It's yummy and it gets a recommend from me!

Haines Brewing Company back patio... so inviting.

Fantastic discovery in Haines. Their offerings were better than expected. I highly recommend Spruce Tips.... Super flavorful. And the views out the back patio are staggering.

Great selections at the Haines Brewing Company!

Haines Brewing Company is located in the SE Alaska Fairgrounds. Parts of the fairgrounds include the relocated set of Disney's film White Fang. Haines Brewing Co is actually located in one of those buildings. Be sure and try their distinctive spruce tip ale! Very tasty. The space is super small, standing room only.

I love beer and I enjoy trying local breweries when I travel. It's a good place to come and try different beers. I tried a few and my absolute favorite was Black Fang! If you are in Haines, it is worth stopping by here for a pine or two.

    Growlers!

Goddamn this is good beer. If you are in Haines, and you like beer, this is one stop you need to make. If they have some available, try the Spruce Tip Ale. It's seriously the best thing ever. It's like no other beer, like the brewmaster told us. All the beers I tried were amazing. If you come by here in Dalton City, you can get a sample glass for only $1.25. Good deal! The Dalton Trail Ale is a great, easy drinking ale that goes well with anything. The Black Fang is a heavy Imperial Stout which is a meal in itself with complex flavours and a nice finish. But don't let me tell you all about their beers. Go try some. Or visit their website. They do sell growlers now, so be sure to pick some up to take home for your evening. Unfortunately, we were a day too early for the root beer. I really wish we could have tried some.

I liked all of the beer they had on tap, but they have some you won't get many other places, like spruce tip.

It was a little after 1 and there were several cruise ships docked, so the lobby was quite full. When I walked up to the podium, the host explained our options: go to the pub for drinks and a limited menu, or wait 15-30 minutes for a table upstairs with the full menu. We weren't in a hurry and wanted all the options, so we decided to wait for a table. It was about 20 minutes before the host called us. After being seated and checking out the menu, I chose a mug of the house-brewed root beer along with a Alaskan Sandwich, subbing the fries for a side salad. My wife also ordered the root beer, but with a Salmon Sandwich with a cup of soup instead. We also shared a whole Big Pickle! First, the root beer was very refreshing. Not super sweet, but still flavorful. And my sandwich was very delicious! The piece of Alaskan Greenling was so big, it was hanging over the bun. With the side salad, it was just the right amount of food, but I didn't feel too stuffed. My wife enjoyed her sandwich and loved the cup of beer cheese soup. And the big pickle offered a good crunch and contrast to our sandwiches. Overall, we had a wonderful experience. We did pass on dessert, but would try it if we came back to Alaska. The only weird thing is that there was no wifi available, and the cell signal was non-existent. We had to *gasp* talk to each other!

The brewer who did our tour was super enthusiastic and fun to hang out with. He made sure our glasses were topped off and gave a great talk about the workings of the brewery and his passion for beer. We got to try three 8-oz samples and a full pint, all included with the tour. The beer was good and the root beer was great. I highly recommend that you make sure to try the root beer and the coffee stout; they were the most delicious. The lighter beers were good too, but not as flavorful. The tour was too short, though. Our day in Skagway was quite long, and this only filled part of the afternoon. And it could easily have been longer, too, since getting people to chug four glasses of beer in less than an hour really rushes the experience. The bus company that took us to and from the brewery was also very good. The drivers talked extensively about the town and its history, even fielding impromptu questions.

The place is a brewery that apparently also does tours, food, and, from what we inferred, a bit of live music from time to time. We were only there long enough to taste beer, so I can really only speak to that. We did a tasting of six beers, and I can't say I much cared for any of them. A lot of them had a sour, funky kind of thing happening, which, if it was intentional, was just not to my taste. Some of the heavier ones were okay (bigger flavors masked some of the funky), but we couldn't finish the lighter ones because of it. At least the service was good.

We were given a pack with water, snacks, and our lunch at the start then stopped at the trailhead to get ice creepers and hiking poles (these are optional, but I highly recommend them - you'll want them at the glacier). Sam and Austin both carry massive packs with anything you could ever want - rain gear, gloves, extra snacks, first aid kits, rescue gear, and everything that would be needed in case of some freak accident trapping us on the trail. And as an added bonus, Sam and Austin both worked as EMT/Paramedics at the fire station in Skagway. They are more than prepared for anything that could happen. The trail is a fairly simple there and back - if you semi regularly do day hikes, you'll be good! As you hike you watch how the forest changes over time after a glacier retreats. Even if you're not into the science of it, it's a beautiful hike. Austin is a wealth of knowledge and can tell you everything you could ever want to know about the glacier and the forest. The trail seems to be fairly underutilized - Packer Expeditions are the only ones that lead hikes out there, so Sam and Austin take a lot of ownership of the trail. It's refreshing to see people that love the place they live and work so much. This was an extremely memorable experience and needs to be on everyone's bucket list

Prepare for a long review of a very long day! So our day started on a very windy day where we were greeted by 2 of our three guides. From there we walked to the train. It was right through town and we got a mini walking tour of the history. It was super cool because they also pointed out the fun places to try on the way back afterwards! We then arrived to the white pass railroad train. This is where we met up with our final guide. Now comes a memorable moment, the infamous train ride. We road it for about 14 miles till our trailhead. It becomes real when you get off the train and then the train just leaves you there. Once we arrive our three guides prepared sandwiches for us all for the journey. This is when a mind blowing part hit me. All three of them were carrying 60+ pound full backpacks filled with extra water, snacks, rain gear, medical equipment, and so much more. Like you legitimately could choose to do a hike and bring honestly nothing and these guys will carry it all. Throughout the hike when it got hotter they even offered to carry peoples jackets. Honestly mind blowing because it was a fun and challenging hike. Overall the hike was fun! They stopped several times to point out plants and teach us things about the area. They also made sure to stop at all the fun photo spots! The next thing was at every stopping point they encouraged everyone to go as far as they personally can go. Meaning if you can't make it to the glacier, totally fine! They had three guides and one will always stay back with you. Honestly the views are unreal! Overall I'm so happy this company partners with all the cruise lines. I experienced some of the best hospitality and also a handful of dad jokes throughout the trip. Some of the most incredible people work here who are beyond proud of the wonderful city of Skagway. It's fun learning about the city from them! I can't wait to return and do another excursion with these guys.
