There is a sign above the front door beer for sale by owner. I find this amusing because a large amount of buildings in the area have a for sale by owner sign. When entering it is a very clean well lit seating area with a garden out back you can sit to have your drinks. The quality was decent and the staff were friendly. Bring cash. No flights per se, but 5oz pours were $3 each. I was not disappointed by any that our group tried. A nice way to meet some local people and appreciate the ambiance of their spirit for their community. We posted also to Untappd app. It certainly helps when the weather cooperates, and it did today. Great beers and fun atmosphere! Not a lot to to do in this area at this time of year so it was nice to have a good beer.

New scale I just came up with for breweries! It's 1 to 10 on how traditional they are. A "1" would be a brewery that only makes a pale ale, a porter, a stout, a blonde, and an occasional IPA. (the most traditional, for an American craft brewery, at least) A "10" would be a brewery that makes marshmallow aged imperial seltzer sours. (Non-traditional to the point of parody) This isn't a scale for how "good" a brewery is, just for the types of beers you might find there. If you like classic American styles, a "1" would be the best. If you like sour milkshape apricot IPAs, a "10" would be best. I fall somewhere in middle, but leaning towards less-traditional. I would put Haines at a 4. The beers they make here are solid, but pretty safe. I loved everything I had, but the hoppy lager may have been my favorite! I love lagers, I love hops, these two never meet enough for my tastes! A huge disclaimer though (and they almost lost a star for these) is how brutally stubborn and rigid some of their policies are: - No tasters...this is...the reason lots of people go to breweries. This sounds like a law that Alaska would make to punish breweries with but this brewery whips themselves with this restriction. - 7pm closing time. Speaking of self-flagellation, this brewery closes an hour earlier than the already-early-state-mandated closing time of 8pm. It's pretty silly that the sun sets after 9:30pm in Haines, and the brewery closes at 7. - No growler fills for any growler but theirs. The reason given is cleanliness and not guaranteeing beer quality. However, the main thing that destroys beer quality these days is not microbes, it's oxygen, and they do not CO2 purge their growlers, so these are going to go bad in a week or two just like any other brewery...whether you buy a growler from them or not. The building and location, are awesome. They have a bright and sunny beer garden in the back. The building is new and squeaky clean, with high ceilings. I wish I could've gone when they had the old, folksy location though! read more

We came by for a refresher after a wonderful wilderness tour of the Chilkoot National Park. The beer was all fresh and produced on site. Most of the beer was IPA I wanted something else so got the stout. It was ok not great. Not as smooth as stout I drink elsewhere but it had nice flavor. Beers= B+/Attitude= D- A travel priority for me is to support local brewers wherever I go, so Haines Brewing Company was tops on my list when I visited a few weeks ago. One of the best beers I've ever had in my life was a spruce tip ale in Ketchikan over a decade ago, and I've dreamed about it ever since. When I saw a Spruce Tip on the menu at HBC, I HAD to try it and it was so good I honestly never tried anything else on my two visits there. We stayed in Haines for a week and I would have made it a point to visit the brewery daily, except for one thing: One of the owners, Jeanne Kitayama, worked the bar and was far colder than any of the brews on tap. A blank stare and the bare minimum of grunts required to complete the transaction was all she could muster for anyone who wasn't a local. As an owner, it's certainly Jeanne's prerogative to show her disdain for the tourists in the tourist town where she started her business. I'm sure that being asked 'do you do flights?' for the thousandth time or explaining that you refuse to honor debit or credit cards is soul-sucking- and, boy does it show. We all got the clear sense that she'd rather we not be there, so we accommodated her- AND YOU SHOULD TOO. If you really want to try their beers, other establishments in town serve them minus the RBF. read more

There are roughly 3 things to do in Haines and this is one of them! With Alaska's 2 pint limit, they sell their beer in 5oz and 12oz. This meant we could order 3 different beers instead of 2, but they also didn't let us taste any of them beforehand, asking us to buy the 5oz taster. I most enjoyed the view of the mountains from the outdoor area! Great place to have a beer and look at the scenery. read more

Look, you should go here - good beer and a nice spot. Two star was for just really odd service. Having never been, we walked in and asked if they had flights so we could try all the beers they offered. We were met with a condescending 'No flights, we actually drink beer here.' and an awkward stare. Was just...weird, especially given how awesome, friendly, and welcoming every other spot in town is. Goddamn this is good beer. If you are in Haines, and you like beer, this is one stop you need to make. If they have some available, try the Spruce Tip Ale. It's seriously the best thing ever. It's like no other beer, like the brewmaster told us. All the beers I tried were amazing. If you come by here in Dalton City, you can get a sample glass for only $1.25. Good deal! The Dalton Trail Ale is a great, easy drinking ale that goes well with anything. The Black Fang is a heavy Imperial Stout which is a meal in itself with complex flavours and a nice finish. But don't let me tell you all about their beers. Go try some. Or visit their website. They do sell growlers now, so be sure to pick some up to take home for your evening. Small little brewery in Haines, and most remarkably known for being the backdrop to White Fang, the movie with Ethan Hawke if anyone remembers - maybe 1 of 3 movies ever made about Alaska. It's a small shop, and operates pretty much like a stand. You walk in, see their huge brewer, and you ask for your choice of beer or a tasting of a few. They have got some really tasty ones, and they're pretty strong. They don't mess around here! I really liked the porter - chocolatey, full bodied, and strong. The other fun part about visiting is that you get to see the state fairgrounds. I don't know if it still operates but you still see the booths and stages of what once was. Right next to the brewery, there's also a beach sand volleyball court and 6 horseshoe tosses if you want to get into some competition after a jug of beer. Cheers! read more

Beer was ok, nothing especial. Employees have no business being in hospitality industry. As they are not hospitable. Happened to get a video call from my sister while there. The guy(ass****) behind the bar rolled in on me full of nasty attidude to tell me to go ouside and no cell phones allowed. I saw no visible sign stating any such rule. I can however respect that. What i cannot except is the manner in which i was confronted. If your looking for a place to spend your hard earned money where the employees are Friendy this is not the place. Will not go back. This brewery came highly recommended from several locals, and for good reason: the beer was excellent. I had the Spruce Tip beer and it was more than just kitsch, it was a great unique flavor on a maltier base than I expected. Sips of a couple other beers were equally impressive. The wide range of taps available should appeal to all preferences. Service was not exactly friendly, but I'm willing to chalk that up as frontier gruff...the place overall has a good local feel. read more

We've been here twice, the first time we arrived 20 minutes before closing and they wouldn't serve us as "we wouldn't finish our beer before they closed" ! Seriously? ! The second time we took our growler in as we were camping in the area for a few days and wanted some local beer. Beer isn't that good. Tried 3 and they all had a skunk smell. Staff wasn't pleasant or friendly. A customer asked if they had a restroom and was rudely told "Yea, for paying customers." When I asked if they enjoyed cruise ship days she replied "Cruise ship days are busy and I don't like dealing with tourists but fortunately I work here and can drink more to make it through." Overall not impressed with the staff or quality of the beer. I was excited to try a small craft brew location and was highly disappointed. Root beer was good and the beer garden was a nice touch. Reading other reviews the reply from the owner shows they don't actually care. I wouldn't ever go back and have friends making visits in the near future and will tell them to stay away too. read more

Nice tasking room, with an amazing view. The beer, from what I could tell in a limited sample, was good - about average for the northwest, and not distinctive. Only brewery I've ever been to that won't grant a small taste before ordering (contrast this with Alaskan Brewing Co., which gives three small glasses for free) - and I likely would have tried and spent more money there with that simple step. This is another Haines business that felt vaguely passive aggressive toward non-locals. read more

We have traveled over 9000 miles since departing Austin, Texas. At every location we have searched for a brew pub. In many cases we have been pleasantly surprised with the quality of the beer. Haines Brewing was no different. The New Zealand IPA was excellent, crisp, flavorful, but not too hoppy. We loved it. However, we had an issue with the owners Paul Wheeler and Jeanne Kitayama. My wife and I have a service dog. In accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), we cannot be refused entry to any establishment (save an airline) with a service dog. When we entered Haines Brewing, Jeanne said, "Dogs are not allowed." I said, he is a service dog. She responded "Do you need him?" This is a question that a business owner may only ask if they wish to violate the law. I have never, ever been denied entry with my dog. Then, while we were in the brew pub, Jeanne evidently did some Web searching on service dogs. My son called me from Texas to talk. Rules. There is a small sign next to the taps that says something like "No Cell Phone usage in this Brewery." I had not noticed this. But while I was talking Jeanne held this sign up to get my wife's attention. Kind of rude. But it turned out the real reason for their discontent was the presence of our service dog. Jeanne said, "Denver has passed a law to outlaw dogs in restaurants." I replied, "...not service dogs. A business owner cannot refuse to permit a service dog entry. That's when Paul Wheeler, brewery co-owner, spoke up. "We can refuse service to anyone for any reason." Nice. Then playing off Paul's discontent a patron called me a foul name, "Don't be an a**hole." My wife told Jeanne something about my need for a service dog. She then asked more, personal questions. This is none of their business. Good beer. Rude people. Don't care about veterans. read more

Haines brewing is a wonder little slice of heaven in a heavenly little town. My favorite is the spruce tip ale and next is the bigger hammer which is a barley wine. if you like beer any of it is great. I highly suggest a visit and try out some of the beers. read more
