I just moved to NJ from Brooklyn and was looking for a new salon. A friend (with great hair) immediately recommended this place and to see Anthony in particular. All I can say is that I am very, very happy I took her suggestion. I have a new hair salon (which is lovely) and Anthony is FANTASTIC. One of those artists who isn't just going to do what the picture you brought in looks like. He's going to talk to you about what version of that style might be best for you. He takes everything into consideration and doesn't make a move on anything with your hair until you are both excited about the plan. Honestly, I never want to go to anybody else. And I should add that everyone I met at that salon, including the owner, was incredibly nice. Like, genuinely nice. Not performing for customers. People who work there seem genuinely happy with their jobs and each other and to me that says soooo much about a place. Also, there were two rescue dogs just hanging out there with their person and being totally chill and social with the clients. That alone could've sold me on the place. Lol. Everyone knows how difficult is to change hair salons... to find a professional that truly gets you and your style is a titanic endeavor. I read the reviews of Hair Cult and because I had to I jumped... reviews were good and I really need a root touch up and a refresh of my highlights. They were super attentive and professionals from the very beginning. They have an online questionnaire that I found very easy to fill and gave me peace of mind that the person on the other side will understand what I wanted. Arrival and welcome impeccable. Showed them pictures, told them what I did not want. Showed them what I wanted. Now... time for coloring.. well I will say this, highlights came up exactly as I wanted. Base color came exactly as I told them I did NOT want it. It took me years to remove the dark base of my hair... and now is fully back on :( Not going to lie, they were very nice, they did not say once they made a mistake or apologize for the colossal fiasco that will take me years to fix... but they did the next best thing which is take action when they saw me about to cry... and they offer me an appointment to try to fix it... I still do not know how will they be able to erase completely the dark color base they put without turning it into a red hot root or frying my hair... but because I really hate how I look right now - still I am willing to give them a chance... The price was quite expensive for a root touch up and a partial highlights in my humble opinion, I paid over 300 usd. In manhattan normally it did not go beyond 190 usd... so...that's a negative... UPDATE I went to fix the dark roots, which they did by applying more highlights to camouflage them... and it did work on the roots... you cannot see them that much... I have nevertheless ended with various tones of blonde... We did make a plan to put my hair back on track... You can see the end result of this second appointment in the photo... I sincerely think the people there are super nice and have very good vibes... they treated me fantastic... But I am not happy with how my hair is looking after a second appointment... I will never be returning to this salon. The staff is very nice. However, reception is a hit or miss. If you get Stefanie, she's great, kind and warm. If you get anyone else, they're rude. The stylist themselves are fantastic and very nice people. Mgmt however is very cold and does not value loyal customers. I had to cancel my appointment today due to being stuck on a work call. I've been a loyal customer for 3 years now. There was a no understanding from management when it came to the cancellation fee. Also, I was told that I would be charged 50% of the costs of services for the cancellation fee but was charged a 100%. Would not recommend this place. Mgmt over the years has instilled policies to get the most money out of customers - "got ya" type of policies to say it nicely and does not value long term customers. Save yourself grief and find a salon that values your loyalty and has more flexibility. And yes, every visit I did was $200+ in cost so it's not like they didn't make money off of my patronage. ****Attaching the reply from the business owner. I have had many appointments this year and have not cancelled once and we are in June already. I also have all text messages with her staff screenshotted and saved. I have never called her staff names or bombarded them with text messages. Laurie lies through her teeth - my messages today to her staff was in regard to the untrained staff at the receptionist desk that did not know what they were doing and the cancellation fee which I was told was 50% of services but turned out to be a 100%. I called in several times today to advise my status and was yelled at by reception that the salon was busy and backed up. My initial appointment, I called my stylist and was advised he too was running late - to take my time. The left hand doesn't speak to the right hand at this place and again, the owner has the nerve to place the blame on the customer. Word of advice, don't own a business if you don't know how to deliver customer service. By the way my original appt today was at 2 pm not 1:15. Shows how much mgmt keeps up with the business. ***Here I'll post them for you. Reviewers please see the attached. My words are being twisted. The "old lady" comment was one regards to an older woman who works the reception and is very rude and needs more training for her job. I don't remember her name as I m pretty sure I never got it from her. I am pretty good with names. Forgive me for my poor phrasing. However it was definitely not meant with intent to insult. I was describing one of their employees that's always difficult to deal with. Also when I am on time, I am stuck waiting 15-20 minutes for my stylist to be ready to take me. His last client is always running over. I never complained or said anything. Clearly, at Hair Cult the expectation is for the client to be flexible but never management. I'm a new mom and couldn't make it out to my regular salon in the East Village, so I found another Aveda salon in the area. I really liked Henry as a person, but now, a few weeks after the cut and color, I'm increasingly disappointed in the results. The color did not blend well with the color already in my hair and the cut is so choppy that it looks very cheaply done. For $300 plus a 20% tip, I expect far better than this (also, I was quoted $250, but was charged $300). I'm extremely disappointed and a bit embarrassed about how my hair looks and saddened that I wasted so much money. Additionally, they kept pushing getting an extra gloss service on me. My normal Aveda salon never "requires" this step at an extra cost, so it's not an excuse for poor coloring. I definitely won't be returning. read more

This would have been very nice to know so hoping a few readers are aware before going :). I have no doubt this review will be met with a snarky accusatory response as all the other poor reviews have been. (Nice business practice) But BEWARE of going to Hair Cult. Don't let the decor and high prices fool you. Their stylist Henry is an amateur color artist at best and their customer service is the worst I've experienced. When a stylist sits there and tells you that your hair doesn't look like what you asked for you know it's bad. My hair is brassy, streaky, and embarrassing. As I'm not one to complain and knew Henry was a new hire I held off on calling in. But finally I had to as people were commenting on how bad my hair looked. I got the nastiest call from their salon insinuating I had done something on my own to my hair since I had waited 4-5 weeks to rectify the situation. Then insisted I would pay for another service to fix the botched one! When I had already paid over $300 to have my hair look like it was done by someone who just started beauty school. She kept saying it was a simple solution to tone over with a gloss- so why wasn't it done when the stylist mentioned it looking bad? Oh. Because he was late to do another appointment. RED FLAG POLICY she mentioned on their website that they will only guarantee their work for one to two weeks. That's when you know they're aware they do poor work and don't want to be held responsible. Save your money, save your hair. Stay away. read more

A waste of time and money. I've never been so displeased with the color of my hair. After two hours and two hundred dollars at Hair Cult last Friday, I now HATE the color of my hair. I would not mind spending a lot of time and money if the color came out well. Before starting, I showed the stylist photos and described exactly what I wanted: face-framing, yellow, brightening, blond painted-on highlights. She said, "no problem." Be upfront - if you can't do something, then you need to voice that before a service NOT after. She also added an unexpected fee (for a gloss) which was never disclosed to me until I was about to pay. I expressed how unhappy I was with the copper red tones that she put in my hair and she said I would have to spend another $110.00 for her to fix what she just did. I went for my first color right before Covid-19 and it matched my natural color and the shine! It lasted a very long...but the best part was the overall experience and trust they instilled. It's not often I write a yelp review. Like all, it takes an extreme experience good or bad to compel me. On my part, I'm embracing both because one lead me to the other. I'm happy for a mistake since I arrived at the right place eventually. It's not enough to say that this was the nicest person I'd met in Hoboken (even though she is from N. Bergen shhhh) but I should say that the person I was so lucky to meet must've been the pulse of goodness. To land in the chair of this person after some painful mistakes was a lucky chance for me. Steph is the best stylist I've ever been to - specifically for blondes. I'm sure she's good at other styles too but I've been getting highlights for a while now and I've tried a lot of salons- Steph listens to what you want and works with you to achieve the results you are looking for. I came across Davida on Instagram as I was trying to find a specialist for blonde hair. I originally had baliage, but was unhappy and didn't know what to do to fix my situation. Hands down one of the best hair salon experiences I have had. I desperately needed a hair cut due to Covid and I also wanted to get balayage done for the first time. My extensive research on local salons and instagram stalking lead me to Tyler who specializes in balayage. He made my hair look so beautiful and I can't wait to go back to add more. He was so sweet and made me feel comfortable from the start. Tyler is also so pleasant to talk to and the 2.5+ hours flew by. Everyone in the salon was so nice and welcoming. Well I hate doing this but feel compelled to write a review. To start I filled out an extensive questionnaire with photos of my hair and the desired color I wanted as a new client. Sounded great and extremely thorough. Well, I am blonde with warm tones and despised the warmth and wanted to be a cooler blonde. I showed her a picture of the color I wanted and expressed in detail how much I hated warm tones. With all of the hype with my initial questionaire, I got the total opposite and was not listened to at all. Let's just say I left with copper pigments for my bayalage with blonde highlights that were super choppy an really uneven. Just to make mention I went to the top colorist in this salon. They didn't go over prices with me but charged me $350... I paid it then left. As I was halfway down Washington street they called me and told me that I was charged wrong that I had to pay an additional $50. Wow ok. I've been to many salons in my life and I have never experienced such unprofessionalism. I initially asked them the cost and they said you have to speak to the colorist. Never told me. Ok moving on....Took a photo and showed the colorist the choppy bayalage streaks in my hair and all the red and she agreed it needed to be fixed. WELL... it wasn't. There is no way on Earth that I will go back a 3rd time to be fixed. Not by her or anyone in that establishment. $400 I paid to be completely unhappy. I had to then go and spend additional money to fix it. Very friendly staff I have to say but was completely unhappy with my service. Unfortunately I will never step foot in there again. After going to this salon a few times and having a very good experience ( the price was good and my stylist "Tyler" was a doll. ) I had what I thought was the same thing done a color and a cut., which cost about $130. This time, At the last minute she talked me into a few painted highlights which she did without quoting me a price. How much could 2 painted on highlights be anyway? It ended costing me over $580 to leave the salon. Which I did not realize until the monthly bill came in. I called the salon because I thought they had made a mistake. Evidently a few painted highlights cost $280 which the owner So rudely pointed out to me. I would not have agreed to the process had it cost that much. ZERO STARS. I went to get my hair done yesterday at noon. It was such a long, sad series of events that I'm going to put it in bullet format so that it's all easier to digest. * My appt starts late (12:10) because receptionist doesn't show up on time. * I explain what cut and color I want to my stylist. My hair was shoulder length, roots to mid were sandy blonde, mid to ends were platinum and well taken care of. I wanted a dark, warm espresso color with plum tones. * Alex told me she would have to do a "filler" to even out the color first which would cost an extra $50, I declined. I said I only wanted single process color. She said okay. * She mixes color (but only enough to cover 3/4 of my head), and applies it the same way I've ever had dye applied professionally, otherwise I would have stopped her (nothing I've ever had to pay extra for, let alone $100). She goes to mix more color, and takes a while at that. * Once my color is on she tells me it has to sit for a further 45 minutes; I end up sitting for an ENTIRE HOUR. It's 1:50 at this point, and the dye has been on my head for at least and hour and twenty minutes while she took another customer. That is completely unnecessary. * She finally washes my hair and tells me she's doing a conditioning treatment, I ask how much it is, she says $5, I say fine. The conditioning treatment ends up being 3 spritzes of Damage Remedy that she doesn't even massage into my ends. * I then get left at the shampoo bowl in that super awkward position for another 30-40 minutes. I can no longer feel my neck. (The muscles at the back of my neck are now quite literally bruised and painful to move.) * Alex hurriedly cuts my hair, doesn't show me any of it, rushes me to the register to pay. (It is now 3:50 and my shift at work starts in ten minutes.) * When I get to work my coworkers point out the uneven color, the splotches of purple dye on my face and globs of dye IN MY EARS, and my hairline which is dyed in an unsightly zigzag of brushstrokes. * Today I realize the cut is jagged and uneven as well, no matter which direction I part or style it, it's in tatters. * I speak to the Laurie (owner of the salon), she says I was given the color and cut that I asked for, she says 'oops' about the mess of dye on my skin, she basically says 'oh well' about my wait, and she says I could have sat up at the shampoo bowl if my neck was numb, that I wasn't strapped to the chair. What an incredibly rude and unprofessional response! * I come in today to speak to Laurie. Alex and Laurie sit on either side of me, gang up on me, and literally never let me finish a sentence. They speak over me and each other, they condescend me and make me feel like an idiot and sound like a liar. * Alex tells me that before she started she told me she was going to "pull through" the color, which she now also refers to as a "glaze", and that it cost extra money. (A glaze and a pull through are not the same thing, and neither were ever mentioned, if they were I would have declined them). She tells me that $85 for single process color means I'm only getting a root touch up. Laurie pipes in an says that it clearly says that on the website. It says nothing of the sort on the website, it only says single process color for $85 and up. * I told her that when I came in, in person to book my appointment that I asked if the $85 single process color would be enough, that I wanted my whole head dyed, or if they'd have to do double process or something, and I was told that was fine (they checked my hair.) I asked for the BEST colorist in the salon and I ended up with a junior stylist. I was told one thing and ended up with another every step of the way. I said I did not want any treatments or services without my knowledge or approval. I wanted a specific color that I know looks great on me and I ended up with a purple color verging on blackness (with blonde patches) and I look completely washed out and ruddy. Neither Laurie nor Alex somehow could not see the choppy hair and uneven color. They tell me over and over that I'm just getting used to the contrast of going from a light color to a dark one. (My hair has been every color of the rainbow, there's nothing for me to 'get used to'.) * Laurie is getting fed up and giving Alex looks at this point and when I tell her I need a refund she slaps an insulting $15 in front of me (I left it there). I don't even understand how she came to that amount. My total was $160, before my $20 off coupon, and the cut was $60. I was never told what I was being charged for, and somehow they couldn't come to an agreement on pricing vs what I ended up paying. * I end up being there for 3 hours and 50 minutes, and was 10 minutes late to work. Ridiculous. When I tried to calmly rectify things with the owner, I'm met with rudeness, backpedaling, condescension, and blame. Neither Laurie nor Alex deserves any of the money I paid, and Laurie's negative reputation precedes her. Do not go here. read more

I got a 30-minute plant revitalizing facial by Carmen... who is a sweetheart! There is $5 off coupon for first-timers so I ended up paying 70 for a facial instead of 75... I moved to the Princeton area but was in the area for the week visiting family... In princeton, the prices are about the same but prepare to be +/- $15 range in spa facials I must say, you do get what you pay for... the treatment, room, area, decor, professionalism were all great and $70 did make sense to me at the end of the day. While I do still think my 23 y.o. self doesn't need to frequent myself with facials- I still would suggest Marma to folks... They have seasonal specials (autumn 25% off facials/massages) and then I would definitely recommend people to visit without a second thought... As for waxing, there were also customers in there raving about Najat's waxing wonders- and although I go somewhere else to wax eyebrows, I might just try her out!! P.S. they use aveda products which is awesome, natural, and smell like you are in the forest, getting a new take on life =) read more

I called this salon today to schedule a trim. They had an available slot for 4PM. I happily accepted the appointment and asked how much it would be for a trim. The receptionist said it would be $55 for a Junior stylist, to then I again confirmed the appointment. At 6PM, my stylist finally finished my haircut with a minimal trim, blow dry & style. Took her 2 hours to trim, dry and style my hair. It normally takes that long to COLOR, wash, dry and style my hair. While I do have long hair, she took 15 minutes to massage my head in the beginning of the appointment as part of the experience of their salon, another 20 to wash my hair and then another 15 to brush it. By the time she finally got her sheers in her hand, it was an hour into my appointment. Upon my checkout, the receptionist had expressed the bill would be $70. I asked if that included gratuity and she said no. I asked her why she had told me that it was $55 on the phone and now its $70 here. She seemed confused and taken back by my question and explained that because my "hair is long and it took her stylist 2 hours to do my hair", it's an extra $15+ tip. I told her that she should have expressed that on the phone or even upon arrival when she saw long much hair I had and what it would require. Especially when I had specifically asked how much it would cost and there was no disclaimer communicated that the price would change should my hair require more labor or time. She said "how was I suppose to know how long your hair was and how long it would take to do?" I replied she should explain on the phone that it starts at $55 and goes up from there depending on how much hair you have and the time it takes to cut. She told me she was too busy to explain that on the phone at the time I made the appointment. She then tried to convince me that because my stylist used a hot tool, that required extra money as well. My stylist had trouble getting a wave out of my hair with a normal blow dryer, so she decided to use a hot too - I did not ask her to use a curling iron and had I known it was considered extra, I would have expressed not to continue with it. It was clear the receptionist tried finding excuses to justify the $15 extra cost when it could have all been easily resolved with proper communication. It's poor etiquette to not disclose the terms & conditions to your clients when they ask for pricing. I work in Hospitality and know all about what its like to have clients perceive costs. They feel taken advantage of when things are not disclosed in advance - its rude, unprofessional and unacceptable. I will not be returning to this salon. read more

Came here last week in need of a major cut and wanted some different type of color. I literally had no idea what it is i wanted to do and was a little weary. My stylist was Stephanie and she seemed really chill and down to earth, plus she likes to call everyone babe. I did that one thing that is so hard to do..trust your hair stylist. Trusting your hair stylist is about the same as trusting a lover not to screw you over. It's like playing jenga with the last few pieces. I told her put whatever color in my hair you think is best and it was a fast beautiful and quick process. So afterwards i came out walking around confused as to what i just did, I'm not use to my hair having much color in it and it was like a dark lavender going into lighter. I don't even know what my hair color is still but once it started sinking in after the first day i was like holy ish i like this, i really dig this hair color. LOVE this place! Last week I got my hair cut by Stephanie (Diaz maybe? She has long brown hair and glasses, I think there are two Stephanies). It only took about 15 minutes until we were friends! She's a total sweetheart, as is the rest of the staff. I am not super picky about my hair, so as I search for my regular salon in Hoboken, I was really looking for someone cool to see every couple months. I found my place and my girl, and I can't wait to go back. I asked her to take off some length and weight of my shoulder length hair. I pretty much said I want to look a little more mature but still fun and edgy. Stephanie completely nailed it and I love the way it looks and feels. I don't know what magic she pulled, but I don't even have to dry my hair for it to look great. Say hello to Leche, the very sleepy dog that hangs there sometimes. They even let my dog come say hi afterward! Bonuses: shoulder and head massage, great products, and a very spacious salon. As a California transplant I have found it difficult to locate a really good colorist who knows blonds. Until now, I met Ms. Katie K. through a mutual friend and thought her blond looked great. Of course I pounced on her about where she gets it done she informed me it was at her job, Hair-Cult. I quickly made an appointment for a partial, just in case it didn't go so well for me. Anyway, I lucked out with an appointment with Rita. Oh Rita, hands down the best colorist I have encountered in years. For as long as possible, Rita will be my hair guru. She is a color teacher (not sure if that is the correct term) for Aveda schools and she picked me out a divine luscious blond color. Better yet, the color has not gone brassy one me like so many before it. I can only speak about the coloring because so far I have not had a cut, however, I am getting ready as I write this to head over there a full color and cut. I can only imagine how great the cut will be given how amazing the color ended up. Pricing: The partial was reasonable and part of the appeal of HC is I no longer want to pay $270 for a hair cut and highlights. Definitely give it a try. Great! My hair has never looked healthier & fuller. Hair Cult's stylists are warm and friendly people, and most importantly 'top of their game'. My color and highlights look better than ever (and I've been to many NYC salons paying extraordinary high prices with mediocre results). If you live in Hoboken and are looking for a new stylist, Steff is your girl! Absolutely incredible! Aside from being so fun, upbeat and personable, she does absolutely phenomenal work. I am crazy about my hair and the way that it's done, and I have to say that Steff has given me the best cuts and best color I have ever had. As others have said in their reviews, she really listens to what you want and just "gets it". I have very thick, straight hair and have been getting layers for years, but I always would end up leaving the salon feeling like the stylist barely did anything. They would say that if I wanted to keep my hair as long as it was, then my only option was very long layers, or else it would look weird. I really wanted more layers framing my face so that when I curled it, it would have more volume and dimension; and also so that when I pulled it in a low bun, ponytail, or half up/half down, I would have the option to leave the front pieces out for a less sleek look. Steff totally understood what I wanted and gave me exactly that, and even better than I could have imagined. Aside from her cuts, she did an amazing job with my color as well! My natural hair color is a super dark blonde with slightly reddish undertones. My hair was much lighter blonde most of my life, and only started to get darker in the last few years. I didn't like dealing with the root growth that would be seen after I got highlights, but I wanted to lighten up my color for summer. Steff gave me balyage with a golden glaze, and I absolutely love it! So natural, beachy blonde and she said it will require barely any maintenance for a whole year!
