Even after not living in town for a few years, I still am loyal to Salon Gatto for my hair cuts. From the comfy, clean space to my amazing stylist, Molly, I am sooooo happy everytime I leave. I have long hair that can be anywhere from wavy to just downright messy curls, it's changed over the years. Molly has always made sure to give me the cut that would flatter it most if it air-dried or blow dried myself, not just when it was professionally blown out leaving the salon. I tell her how I usually would do it and she makes sure that the cut works best for that. She has always given me honest opinions or when I thought about coloring it or doing a gloss. I loved that she didn't push me at all for any sort of color even though it would obviously be much more expensive. Before Salon Gatto, over the years, I've gone to other salons closer to home or near work when I was in a pinch or I've seen other hair stylists at Salon Gatto before I found Molly, (I'm sorry but I can't remember any names!) They were always wonderful and I definitely left happy but Molly is my favorite. She is great at her job, not overly talkative (this is a time to RELAX for me) and sweet and is honest. Am I fangirling?? Probably. They have two locations and just opened a whole new second floor at their original location by the Path train, so I love to see them growing and growing!! Other little great things about Salon Gatto: -they have a lovely drink menu that they bring you out right away, which makes visits here feel even more like a treat. -they hair wash is thorough and they will almost always include a really nice head massage. Honestly super bummed. This is the worst haircut I've had in at least a decade - and I was so excited because of all the talk around this place! My hair has literal stairs. I'm literally so self conscious. I don't get my hair colored- I ask for legit the simplest hair - face framing and some long layers. THATS IT. the front of my hair literally jumps like 2 inches to the next layer. The face framing doesn't blend at all. It's awful. And I even went back to hopefully fix it but the problem is it's too short. So I need to wait basically 3-4 months b4 I can even attempt to fix this. Super disappointed. The salon itself was super nice and relaxing and the vibe was great - but that's not really what matters at the end of the day. It's been 2 weeks and my hair bothers me each and every day :( read more

I must admit that I've been instagram stalking Salon Gatto for a few months now. Trying to get an appointment to cut my insanely long hair. From all the local salons I've been to over the years and ones I've watched on social media, Salon Gatto actually lives up to their image! I came in and met with Molly. A super cute, blonde woman that's friendly and very talented. She made me feel instantly comfortable. She totally understood what I wanted and my hair turned out amazing! The price was actually a little more than I expected, but since I get my hair cut about once a year, it's totally worth it. When I was done, I set up an appointment with her for December so that I'll already be on the books when I need a refresher. But, now the real kicker, I just found out that I will be losing all my hair in a few months, so I may not need that appointment in December. read more

If you have blonde hair or a blonde balayage and want to go dark- do not come here. The owner informed me after a botched appointment at Salon Gatto with Alana, that it is not possible to do that (which is interesting because blondes go darker all the time). After second opinions, other salons have said it is possible so I'd advise going there where they are confident in their hair coloring abilities. Initially, I went in to Salon Gatto with a blonde balayage on naturally mid/dark brown hair wanting to go back to my natural hair color. I made an appointment with Alana who was very sweet but an appointment that should have been easy (I've gotten second and third opinions on this) to go back to my natural hair color turned into a nightmare. The one specification that I gave upon arrival is that I wanted absolutely NO red or warmth in my hair as I only look good in cool tones. Somehow I ended up with exactly what I had not wanted- maroonish hair (or mahogany hair as a second opinion called it). This was after 5 hours and multiple attempts to fix my hair. I ended up leaving after 5 hours with horrible hair, dissatisfied and had still paid for the service. In poor judgement, in hindsight, I would up giving them a second chance to fix things the next day. This resulted in an 8 hour appointment inclusive of dark permanent hair color at the roots, a bleached balayage (ie. Whole head was bleached to remove the demi permanent hair dye), highlights AND low lights. This time I left exhausted, annoyed and still with the wrong hair color. Eddie was patient and tried his best to fix the mess that was made by the other hair stylist and the owner also stepped in to help on her day off which I did truly appreciate since my hair was a mess. However, while I was thanked for my time an patience. I was never offered a refund (only a deep conditioning treatment to fix my hair that was now overprocessed) or truly apologized to. Additionally, there was never acknowledgement of wrongdoing from the owner on behalf of one of her staff. Over the next few washes my hair proceeded to turn orange. I had to schedule another hair appointment elsewhere to fix my hair where I was informed that my hair was fried, overprocessed and would take a long time (likely a year or more) to recover. I was also informed that from the getgo if the first stylist had just gone a shade darker than my hair color (or a toner all over) it would have been fine but that she likely went lighter which is what turned me red. Additionally, when I went to my second opinion she informed me that my hair was orange and yellow and didn't have any brown in it whatsoever. What should have been a simple appointment, left me with months to years of recovery. While I appreciate them trying to rectify my hair (while in turn actually making things worse) a sincere apology and a refund would have gone a long way here. Neither of which were received. read more

I've been going to Salon Gatto since I moved to Hoboken 4 years ago. All the stylists there are PHENOMENAL. Recently, I have been going to Piera and I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE her. Most recently, did the hair painting and it came out so freaking amazing. I don't color my hair often (blame it on the years of my parents not letting me touch my hair), so I wanted something subtle yet noticeable and she nailed it! My colorist sadly passed away a few years ago a master at his craft and a dear sweet soul. Since then I have been searching for someone who can work with blonde hair. Its really not easy to find. I have been to a "high end" salon in Jersey city that was a joke. Then having to travel 45 minutes outside the area for someone who I settled for because she did not make me cry. I decided to try someplace new again. Reading reviews I found Salon Gatto in Hoboken. When I called someone on the phone suggested Danny. I came in this past Tuesday not expecting much but was I in for a treat. The Salon is beautiful and the staff where all friendly and full of smiles. I felt so welcomed. They have a drink menu witch is a great touch. So anyway I talked to Danny about what my end goal was and showed him my dream hair color. He also gave me suggestions on hair care after leaving that salon. I could not believe the result.. He did it! My hair came out better then I could imagined. He took out 90% of the brassy yellow I had in my hair. After only 1 time seeing him I'm almost at my dream color. Danny is a master in what he does. I finally found someone I can trust with my Hair. I've been meaning to write this review for a while. Before moving to Hoboken I was really nervous on finding a new salon. I had a stylist I loved for about ten years before moving the first time and never found someone as good. I assumed when I moved to Hoboken I'd have the same issue. The reviews at Salon Gatto were so great I thought I'd look into it more and give it a try. I highly recommend following the Instagram account. The main account and the stylists do a fantastic job showcasing their work. That's how I found Stephanie. I've always been a blonde (aside from one year when I went dark and will never do it again!) and not everyone can do blondes. I spent a lot of time looking through the work of each stylist to see who I felt matched my style the most. I am so happy I went with her! I also want to mention I was a brand new client after quarantine. I thought there is no way I'm going to find a time slot anytime soon, but they did it! They scheduling process could not be better here! They are so accommodating from the moment you make that first phone call. I also can't say enough about the COVID protocols - expect to be blown away here. I've never felt safer. They focus on one client at a time, take your temperature, make sure everything is cleaned between each process and yes, masks are a must...they also have a little courtyard area where you can go outside while you're waiting. You might look crazy outside in your cape, but it's nice to know you can take a break outside in the open air. Now to the most important part - the work! I can't praise Stephanie enough. She is the right balance of listening to me and giving advice. I don't know how she makes sense of my rambling, but she always knows how to get it right. She is truly an artist. I saw Eddy for a Bob haircut and he did a really great job. When I got home I noticed it was longer in the front and shorter in the back which I do not prefer. I didn't notice this when I was in the salon, which is my own fault. I called back and they were very understanding. He was able to get me in the next day to fix it and did an amazing job! I've only had 3 hair stylist in my adult life and after my hairdresser moved out of state; shy of a year I took a chance with Princessa and Gatto. I couldn't be happier. This salon is not looking out for first-time clients (maybe just ignorant), so here's a PSA: They'll ask you to email your CC. It doesn't matter what they do with it when they get it - just emailing this kind of information in plaintext is terribly insecure. Don't. Hopefully in the future they'll provide a way new clients can pay using SSL, like any reputable services which ask for a CC on file (like hotels!). While their work is lovely, I'll be skipping this place simply because I won't trust them to handle my information securely. If you're going to email your CC anyway, you can limit the potential damage by creating a virtual CC, and dedicate it to only this shop, so you can monitor and revoke it without turning the rest of your life upside down.
