I showed the stylist a reference picture, and she completely understood the look I wanted. The session started with a nice hair wash, followed by the cut and blow-dry. The stylist did a great job -- my hair feels light, fresh, and styled just how I envisioned. They also offered tea, coffee, or other drinks as a kind gesture, which I really appreciated. The entire service took about 45 minutes on a Sunday, and I walked out happy with the result. The total cost came to $99 including tax, which felt a bit pricey to me for a haircut. The reason I tried this place is because it is close to where I live. The location of this place is fabulous. It's a few minutes walk from the grove street PATH station. Seems like they have different stylists according to their speciality. So I would suggest that you get appointments well in advance, specially if you would like a specific person. I had a haircut and full balayage & root shadow from Jenn in May 2022. She is really good at her job and patiently hears you out and delivers according to your vision. Only reason to give a 4 is because I noticed I had hair-fall post getting my hair colored here which has never happened to me before (for reference I usually color my hair twice a year). So maybe it's just my hair or may be their products didn't go well with me. The overall experience was not bad. read more

I've been pretty loyal to Shampoo JC for a few years now. Time for an update! Maria is my go-to stylist and she does a wonderful job. I don't get cuts or color touch up nearly enough, so it's safe to say when I'm in my hair is usually a hot mess. Maria always takes time to walk me through options, and really cares about getting it right. Luckily she always does! She is a color expert and always gets my highlights exactly right. Oh, and my hair cuts / angles / blow outs are always fabulous. Every time I leave I feel like a queen. Prices are high but in line with every other salon in JC. A half highlight will run you around 180, a cut around 80. Plus, it's hard to find a reliable salon and stylist. They are worth the money. Everyone who works at the salon is super sweet and they will always set you up with coffee and tea or even a champagne and a beer. I have loved Shampoo JC for the past several years, but have hated the way they've handled recent price adjustments. Received an email that some services would be increasing in price - with no detail about what services or how much. Turns out, it's all services & it's pretty substantial. Haircuts went from $60 to $100 for some stylists....that's not an increase...that's a price doubling! Shampoo JC was a gem, but one of the reasons I loved it was for its value....which made sense given it was not a super luxe experience. Maria is bomb and always hooks me up! She's given me cuts, blow outs, balayage (low & high lights). She's super friendly and a really great person. I always feel comfortable talking to her and letting her do her work on my hair. The receptionists are also always very sweet. The inside is bright white, clean and elegant with lots of cool local art hanging around. They play a variety of great music. The couple drawbacks are the semi-high prices and that the hair washing chair doesn't have a leg stand for you to put your feet up. Otherwise, def recommend. Book Maria! :) read more

I've never written a negative review before in my life but this was one of the distressing experiences I've ever had. My hair is naturally dark brown and I wanted a semi-permanent gloss to cover up some orange-y tones that had been leftover from a grown out dye job from 4 years ago and a trim. I have very long dark brown hair. Asked for a gloss with a chocolate brown colour scheme to just add more shine and vibrancy. Hair dresser spent 10 minutes telling me that would be impossible to achieve without dying and bleaching my hair. She instead randomly selected a very dark brown without asking me what I wanted and then only dyed half my hair. When I asked her to fix it, it took 2 other employees to explain what I was asking for. Eventually I got her to give me the book of dyes to point out what I wanted. It turns out they did have the exact dye I wanted. Finally they dyed my hair and it looked great! During the cut, the stylist had full conversations with her colleagues and didn't look at the scissors while she was cutting my hair. I had to ask her to concentrate on the cut so it wouldn't be uneven. She did it fast in like 3 minutes. Then another stylist was instructed to blow out my hair straight so she could take out more bulk. Instead that stylist started curling my hair as if the hair cut was over. I had to ask her to stop and dry it straight so I could see what the cut actually looked like. She said that she would get Pam to finish the cut. I waited for 15 minutes then walked over to see Pam fully cutting another person's hair. I asked if she was going to finish my haircut and she said she would and would style it into curls at the end. Instead she finished the cut and they asked me to pay. After I paid, I asked her if she would style my hair and she finished it up. What should've been an hour and a half took 4 hours at this salon. I still have a ton of split ends in my hair and I don't think she actually cut my hair correctly. Usually when you pay a stylist they do the entire cut and style and want to communicate with you clearly and understand what you want. Instead, it was so confusing to be treated so rudely and have to advocate so hard for a simple trim and gloss. read more

If you have long and full set of curly thick hair don't come to this salon! I came in for a full head balayage, cut and blow out. from the beginning most of the staff kept mentioning I have a lot of hair at first I smiled and agreed because its true until the comments kept on coming, the tone started changing and I even noticed the stylist getting annoyed and rolling her eyes in annoyance because she underestimated the amount of hair I had. meanwhile I was her only client! I understand working on my hair takes patience and time but I honestly felt sooo uncomfortable. I then suggested not to have her blow out my hair. I gave the stylist a good tip for her time and work but I left feeling embarrassed and uncomfortable. there should be more awareness and self control on attitudes and more professionalism. I rather travel far to my regular salon then go back here and leaving feeling uncomfortable . I've never had an experience like this and I suggest they improve their customer service. read more

Okay so here's the story - I got my hair done here once before (awhile back) and it ended up NOT being anything close to what I wanted. I wrote this place off immediately and decided, then and there, that I would not come back. I would continue to fly my ass to LA to get my hair done while I continue the search for my local go-to. Well, lo and behold, I need to get my brassy, outgrown highlights fixed before my upcoming summer trips and Love Lane (which I penciled as "the (potential) one") is fully booked until late July. LATE JULY. I'm in a stitch and resign to the fact that I have no other choice but to give Shampoo JC another shot. Girl needs her roots fixed! It's dire! I go armed with plenty of photos to ensure I can show Maria exactly what I want. Full-head balayage and a cut. Something low(er)-maintenance than my current "blond" highlights (natural hair is jet black). Something that can transition/handle growth (my hair grows fast, seriously). And guess what? I recently went back to Shampoo JC because I was interested in Balayage. When I first called to book an appointment, they told me I should come in for a consultation if I haven't gotten balayage done before. I came in spoke with Pedro for 15 minutes who gave me the low down of it all: the maintenance, the time it will take, the cost of the process, etc. Wow, I had no idea what I was walking into. I told him that I wanted to get more natural highlights, maybe an ombre, but I didn't want my roots colored since I didn't want to keep coming back every few weeks for a touch-up. Plus, if my hair grows out, I want the highlights to continue looking natural and nice. I came in last Friday for my 6 hour foilyage (foils because I have pretty dark hair and it is easier to control the warmth through foils). It was quite a process, but it turned out absolutely AMAZING. I am in love with it. He initially lightened my hair (only in highlights) and it was a bit scary. I had platinum blonde highlights against my dark hair, which looks crazy. I was nervous it wouldn't turn out correctly. But 2 hours after that, it turned into perfection! Pedro has magic hands and he is truly talented in what he does. At some point, I showed him a picture of what I wanted and he questioned if that's something I really wanted. I was like "Do what you think is best. You're the professional. I just want beautiful, natural highlights." And he didn't disappoint. If you're looking to get Balayage/Foilyage, ask for Pedro! I've never written a review on yelp before BUT this one was needed. I just got a balayage from Himali and WOW. I've never been so happy with my hair. She was so sweet and knowledgable. My hair has never looked better. In the past two days I've gotten so many compliments on my hair. It was a while since I dyed my hair because of a terrible experience I had last year that fried my hair off, so I was a bit nervous going into it. And wow what an amazing experience, I cannot express how happy I am with what she was able to accomplish. And I don't think I'll ever trust anyone else with my hair again. This is a post Covid review/guide. Recently got a hair cut and a gloss. 1. Make an appointment ahead of time. 2. Call when you're outside the hair salon. 3. Someone will come out and take your temperature and ask you screening questions. 4. You will wait outside (they have chairs and tables) until your stylist comes and get you. 5. There have Plexi glass between the hair washing chairs but I was the only one getting my hair washed at the time. 6. There were only two other customers while I was there and no one getting their hair done next to me. 7. All stylist wore face masks, my stylist also had a face shield. 8. Only one person touched my hair. 9. Pay with card only. You can tip via cash or venmo. Overall I felt quit safe while there and Romel did a great job with my hair. read more

I decided to try out Shampoo JC for the first time after seeing them in Hoboken Girl's "Best of" list. I was originally scheduled to meet with Francesca but after the salon closed for a few days due to covid concerns I was later rescheduled to meet with another senior stylist. I'm choosing not to disclose this persons name as this review is not meant to bring them down but to urge those of you thinking of coming here to do your homework before you book! I went in for a balayage and cut. The stylist had a great personality and really seemed to know what they were doing... until we got to the end of the appointment when, as they were blow drying my hair, we quickly realized the color was off. For context, I had asked for a rich chocolate brown multi dimensional balayage and even showed a few pictures for reference. Instead, what I got were these blonde almost yellowish highlights. The stylist quickly realized their mistake and decided to give the color another shot. This time around, the color seemed a bit more in line with what I had asked but still not what I initially requested so I left a bit uneasy but relieved that it wasn't that yellowish blonde. Once I got home and was able to take a closer look under better lighting, I realized the color wasn't at all what it seemed and instead of it being what I thought was a rich chocolate brown it was red/pink and super streaky! I quickly reached out to the salon and they were kind enough to bring me back the next day for another color correction. This time I thought, third times a charm and it really seemed like we got it down this time, despite it still being streaky, but at that point I felt bad pointing it out given the stylist already seemed annoyed I was there. Four days later, I washed my hair for the first time after the appointment and all the color immediately washed away and was left with the same pink streaky balayage we had just "fixed". I felt uneasy reaching out to the salon again for fear of having this same person "fix" my hair again that I just decided to go to another salon for a color correction. I basically had to pay for the same service twice given the terrible job this person did. Three months later, I am still working on restoring my hair and correcting the color due to all the damage that was done to my hair during those first two appointments. The reason for my review again is not to shame this stylist but to let anyone who's planning on coming here know not to be fooled by their seniority levels. I thought I was doing the smart thing by paying extra to have a senior stylist do my hair but not was I wrong - it is very clear this person has 0 experience doing balayages and believe the salon should do a better job at pairing clients with a stylist that have experience on what it is they're coming in for. If you're planning on coming here I urge you to do your homework, reas the reviews, check out their IG as well as the salons IG and not just rely on seniority. There is a reason why this persons work is never featured on the salons social media. I should've went with my gut and said no to this stylist from the start but I legit thought to myself, if they are a senior stylist then they must know their stuff. Wrong! I've now seen the work of junior stylists at this salon that is a million times better than other more senior stylists so don't be fooled by the titles! Trust me, you will regret it. Had the best haircut with Romel, he listened to what I wanted while also using his knowledge to help guide me to the perfect cut. My hair is very thick and prior to this hair cut I had it in the same style for years, always asking stylists to thin it out LOTS, but he actually found a incredibly flattering and low maintenance style that works with my thickness! The space is also cute and everyone is very friendly and welcoming. I had contacted Shampoo about a month or so before to see if they could style my hair before our Central Park wedding, and they were able to open early to accommodate our timeline (wedding was at noon, they opened an hour early at 8am). I showed Romel pictures of what I wanted, and he worked with me and my hair type to make my vision come true. My hair/curls lasted pretty well through the early afternoon. "I am glad that you are not yelpers" the words of my husband's stylist Alex. We came like 4-5 times to this salon but won't ever come again. You can have a second chance but not the third. 1) Last time my husband colored his hair his stylist burned his scalp you can see it on the last pic. We let receptionist( who spoke with their management about this matter) know and they didn't seem to care. After like a week of pain the scalp finally got better. The result was nice, we enjoyed the style and color. 2) That's why we decided to come back and give this place another chance. Any another place would probably give us a discount for the scalp damage and all the troubles we had to experience. But they didn't do anything but whatever. My husband showed Alex the style he was going for and after 4,5h he was finally done. His hair looked nothing like the photo he showed him and by the way he showed the pics of his own hair lmao. My husband came home with freaking yellow hair. We had to come back, everyone was so nice and cooled his hair again. Now it's orange :)) but here are we go again with burned scalp. Wanted to love it but would not recommend. The "bayalage" was brassy and orange. All the other patrons were shocked that my hair looked orange. It has been months and my hair looks like a mess. Also, on the first appointment they canceled 40 minutes before my appointment began. I was already on the way. If you do that to them, they will penalize you by charging a late cancellation fee.
