After a thoroughly lackluster but nauseatingly expensive ($225) 'curly cut' by She Who Will Not Be Named the end of last September, come January 2022 I was dismayed at how frowsy I looked but I was also feeling very distrustful of letting any more curl "experts" get near my head. My choices were to cut it myself (been there, done that), fly back to San Francisco to let Rafiki at Pastel Salon do the deed (not really practical for any number of reasons) or find someone closer to home (Center City). That is how I found myself and my curls at the Andre Richard Salon. I was early for my appointment with Ava Darling but she greeted me warmly, took my coat, got me draped and seated and chatted briefly about what I was looking for. She was finishing up with another client and gave me a timeline when she would get started with me. Since I always travel with something to read and the salon's atmosphere was calm and relaxed, it was no sacrifice to sit and zone for awhile with the latest New Yorker magazine. There was music playing but it was so unobtrusive (which is always great), it simply added to the 'ah, now let's just slow down and take a breath' ambiance. Ava is a lovely, courteous, softspoken Scorpio who works very hard at stellar customer satisfaction. She is an excellent listener and best of all (to me), very visual. When I told her what I was looking for in a cut, she immediately got out her phone to show me pictures of what she felt I wanted. She explained that it was important to her that both she and her 'guest' were on the same page and pictures were the best way to assure that. Absolutely! My confidence in the outcome of this cut instantly went to 100%. As she did the dry cut, she explained everything she was doing, answered my questions and asked good questions regarding my likes, dislikes, and lifestyle-as in-how much time and effort did I want to put into a style. It was reassuring to me that I was being treated with so much intentional, individual care and not just getting a cut/style that she wanted to do. After the dry cut, where I exclaimed that I looked 1,000 times better already as well as 10 years younger, I was shampooed, given 2 separate treatments, one to brighten up my color, the other a deep conditioning. Both were part of the cost of the cut but they made me feel like I had booked a spa day as I relaxed under the dryer. Again, with every product she used, Ava explained what she was putting on my hair, why she was doing it and what the outcome would be. At no time did she push me to buy any product she was using or invest in a particular product line. Ava is not 'just' a DevaCurl stylist. She provides full service, so if you are looking for color, any kind of cut for any kind of hair or anything else that can be done to your tresses, she's the woman for you. She constantly checked in with me throughout the 2 hours I was there and I felt very much seen, heard and cared about. When blowout/diffuser time came, Ava again took her time to make sure all the lines of the cut were in accord with each other and that I was satisfied with her work. I was astounded at what she had been able to get my hair to do in what seemed to be an effortless way. I asked about the DevaCut 3 month rule for the next appointment, and she said to see how my hair was growing out, what and where I wanted to go next with it (my first thought was curly mohawk) and asured me that it was fine to wait until Spring before I came in again. In the 7 years that I have been back in Philly, this entire hair affair, from making the appointment and pre-paying online to having Ava help me into my coat as I was preparing to depart, was, without a doubt, the easiest, nicest and most satisfying haircut/salon experience I've enjoyed. I can say with a big grin that I will be most definitely back again!

In no time at all, she had cut the hair on one side of my head above my ear, which was the opposite of what I asked for, as I have a deformed right ear from decades of combat sports competition, and I wanted it concealed. As she had already ruined my hair on one side, I bit my tongue as she made the other side match it. I was absolutely furious, but what can a stylist do once they've taken too much off? Absolutely nothing. Now I am stuck with a haircut where my deformed ear is visible for the whole world to see because the stylist decided to give me that haircut that she wanted to give me instead of the one that I asked for. I paid for my haircut with a card and departed in a polite manner, but the moment I hit the sidewalk, I could no nothing but scream profanity as the realization that I couldn't cover my deformed ear kicked in. Now I am not only out $18, but I am stuck with a haircut which leaves me open to yet more questions along the lines of "What's wrong with your ear?" [Edit, I called the place and she offered me a refund, but this doesn't undo the damage she did to my personal appearance. I'll take the refund, but this review stands.] I grew the sides of my hair longer specifically to hide that ear, and the stylist decided that she knew better than me where my haircut was concerned, and forced her personal preferences onto my head. That stylist is very fortunate that I have superior control over my temper, because she has left me feeling disfigured with the haircut she gave me, and now that I'm home and trying to style this mess, I see that she couldn't even manage to trim my bangs straight, and the hair on one side is not symmetrical with the hair on the other side. With the mess she left me with, with my deformed ear exposed, I might just shave my head instead of putting up with this terrible thing she did to my head. I am so humiliated that I don't even want to be seen in public looking like this. I went in feeling good about myself and looking forward to the haircut I asked for, and I left with my self-esteem in the gutter. I get upset every time I catch my refection and see what she did to my appearance. I can't go out looking like this. In short, she was absolutely incompetent & unprofessional in providing a haircut according to the very simple instructions I gave her. She shouldn't be permitted to cut hair, and if she has a state license for cutting hair, it should be revoked. The only reason she's getting one star is because I can't give her zero stars. Attached to this review, you'll see two photos detailing how she couldn't even manage to cut my hair evenly. I could have gotten a better cut from a landscaper with a weed-whacker. There is absolutely no excuse for this, and no apology or refund can do undo the damage. I'll have to wear a hat until my hair covers my deformed ear again. Thanks to a stylist who doesn't listen, I get to wear a hat to cover my deformed ear now. As a craftsman and a business owner, I can tell you that this is not how a professional renders a service to a client. **Update** I spoke with the stylist on the phone a short time ago about the refund she told me she would give me, and instead of telling me when I could come down & get it, she began making all manner of excuses as to why she shouldn't refund my money. This is the kind of experience you can expect to have with this hair stylist: first she will ruin your hair, then she will justify her poor work and back-peddle out of any refund she's already offered you. I should have looked at the other 1-Star reviews of this place, because it seems that those people all had a very similar experience to mine. As a small business owner myself, I'm very enthusiastic about supporting small businesses, but not if they're run by incompetent, unprofessional people who refuse to accept accountability for the damage they do, or offer fair compensation in return for those damages.
