I have a lot of very straight hair and wear it in a chin-length bob so when its not perfect its so easy to spot mistakes and cuts don't always wear well out of the salon. New Year, new hair. Or so I hoped... After a thoroughly lackluster but nauseatingly expensive ($225) 'curly cut' by She Who Will Not Be Named the end of last September, come January 2022 I was dismayed at how frowsy I looked but I was also feeling very distrustful of letting any more curl "experts" get near my head. My choices were to cut it myself (been there, done that), fly back to San Francisco to let Rafiki at Pastel Salon do the deed (not really practical for any number of reasons) or find someone closer to home (Center City). That is how I found myself and my curls at the Andre Richard Salon. I was early for my appointment with Ava Darling but she greeted me warmly, took my coat, got me draped and seated and chatted briefly about what I was looking for. She was finishing up with another client and gave me a timeline when she would get started with me. Since I always travel with something to read and the salon's atmosphere was calm and relaxed, it was no sacrifice to sit and zone for awhile with the latest New Yorker magazine. There was music playing but it was so unobtrusive (which is always great), it simply added to the 'ah, now let's just slow down and take a breath' ambiance. Ava is a lovely, courteous, softspoken Scorpio who works very hard at stellar customer satisfaction. She is an excellent listener and best of all (to me), very visual. When I told her what I was looking for in a cut, she immediately got out her phone to show me pictures of what she felt I wanted. She explained that it was important to her that both she and her 'guest' were on the same page and pictures were the best way to assure that. Absolutely! My confidence in the outcome of this cut instantly went to 100%. As she did the dry cut, she explained everything she was doing, answered my questions and asked good questions regarding my likes, dislikes, and lifestyle-as in-how much time and effort did I want to put into a style. It was reassuring to me that I was being treated with so much intentional, individual care and not just getting a cut/style that she wanted to do. After the dry cut, where I exclaimed that I looked 1,000 times better already as well as 10 years younger, I was shampooed, given 2 separate treatments, one to brighten up my color, the other a deep conditioning. Both were part of the cost of the cut but they made me feel like I had booked a spa day as I relaxed under the dryer. Again, with every product she used, Ava explained what she was putting on my hair, why she was doing it and what the outcome would be. At no time did she push me to buy any product she was using or invest in a particular product line. Ava is not 'just' a DevaCurl stylist. She provides full service, so if you are looking for color, any kind of cut for any kind of hair or anything else that can be done to your tresses, she's the woman for you. She constantly checked in with me throughout the 2 hours I was there and I felt very much seen, heard and cared about. When blowout/diffuser time came, Ava again took her time to make sure all the lines of the cut were in accord with each other and that I was satisfied with her work. I was astounded at what she had been able to get my hair to do in what seemed to be an effortless way. I asked about the DevaCut 3 month rule for the next appointment, and she said to see how my hair was growing out, what and where I wanted to go next with it (my first thought was curly mohawk) and asured me that it was fine to wait until Spring before I came in again. In the 7 years that I have been back in Philly, this entire hair affair, from making the appointment and pre-paying online to having Ava help me into my coat as I was preparing to depart, was, without a doubt, the easiest, nicest and most satisfying haircut/salon experience I've enjoyed. I would give this salon 0 stars if I could. I never rate anyone but feel the need to warn others of my very bad experience. I spoke with them in length about how other salons had not colored my hair right twice, and being a person of color and experiencing hair loss at a young age, when so many other bad things are happening in my life right now I was looking forward to getting my hair colored correctly. We texted in length. I was scheduled for a scalp treatment and hair color correction weeks ago. Then I got a blinding migraine last night as everyone knows no one can plan these things or know how long they will last. My extreme pain made me even more needing of a salon day and relaxation. I alerted them as soon as I could before the business even opened that I would be running a little late, but did my best to be considerate and mentioned I'd be willing to cancel my scalp treatment AND STILL PAY FOR IT as long as I could be taken for color still. I was spoken to in such a harsh tone, interrupted, spoken down to that it triggered a half-day panic attack. It was very unprofessional. Apparently the scalp treatment was not going to happen and I was to find out at the time of the appointment - when experiencing hair loss this was a service I really needed. I was told they wanted to cancel but then I was also charged for a no-show, when I still was on my way. I was told that they did not believe I got sick and I had planned to come late. I was told I was not really in my uber, when I was. I was told I am not a hair stylist myself so I couldn't possibly understand what being a little late meant even though I was offering to remove one service to save time. My mother called and only she was offered respect - not me. She was given an apology - not me. It was not clear who the management or owner is and there were falsifications in the whole story from THEIR end. Completely poor customer service. Their excuse was that because others had faulted them before I must be doing the same thing. I never once have lied, I work as a counselor for children it is not in my nature. I am completely shocked that with these prices, this is the customer service and treatment I received. Do NOT give them your card information upon booking. They will twist and turn their policy to SUIT THEM. And take your money without the service. They are liars. read more

I came in yesterday to get a haircut with one of the senior stylists and had an overall great experience service-wise. From the shampooing to the cut to the blow drying, I felt like my stylist moved swiftly and expertly. However, I was a bit disappointed this morning. Even though my hair had looked fine yesterday after styling, today it looked chunky and uneven. Perhaps my stylist may not have been very experienced with Asian hair (she seemed very experienced from the bio posted on the ARS website). I will have to go get that fixed because I have a dressy occasion to go to later this week. If I could leave 0 stars I would. Would encourage people to look at Salon Bass or Architect Salon if looking for good color! I had a terrible experience at Andre Richard - they do not know how to color hair with finesse. I came in looking for a standard base breaker (single process color to lighten the roots). The colorist took my roots well over a shade LIGHTER than the middle section of my hair, leaving me looking like Big Bird with ridiculously yellow, golden roots and then the rest of my hair darker - after I had repeatedely told her I wanted something natural. When I asked her to tone it down, she made it seem like it was my fault (although I have no idea how things got lost in communication) and kept insisting it was whoever had colored my hair last time's fault, which I found extremely annoying since they gave me exactly what I want! Then, she applied a root shadow all over my hair. The result: my hair now looks dark, dull and flat. And then they charged me $320 for the privilege. I honestly cannot believe the audacity. I tried to explain to the manager at checkout that my hair did not come out as expected. She completely dismissed my concerns. My hair looks terrible and I am over $300 poorer. I cannot afford to repair this. This has truly been the worst salon experience of my life. read more

Yesterday was my first time at Andre Richard's. One of my closest friends (who's also a loyal customer here) had recommended this salon to me. This place is so chill and they have fantastic taste in music (in my opinion lol). I was greeted by a very nice and friendly guy who asked me if I needed anything to drink and took my coat as well. Everyone working had this happy vibe going on. I had medium long hair and wanted a short hair cut and because it was a big decision for me I had brought a bunch of reference images with me. Morgan, my stylist (who is awesome by the way), looked through each picture and discussed very patiently about what I wanted to get done. She was very sweet and kept me engaged in conversations the entire time - which I love because lets admit it - after the amazing shampoo, sitting in that chair and having your hair cut makes you super sleepy. Aytekin was amazing! He gave me the most perfect balayage I've ever had and did it in less than 3 hours for the obscene amount of hair I have. He managed to remove all the brassy tones that were there from a previous service at another salon and gave me the ideal ashy-blonde look that complements my complexion. It's hard to find someone who understands hair and hair chemistry well enough to get exactly the right shade. Not only that, but Aytekin gave me a spectacular haircut with layers that land in all the right places. Terrible experience. don't know where to begin. Went yesterday for a long scissor cut and the "devacurl transformation" and I have never been more disappointed. The appointment was split into two parts: the cut and the style. The master stylist Eric did the styling. I have naturally lose curls that i blow dry straight on a regular basis and I wanted to learn how to style my hair curly from a professional as all the information on the Internet is confusing. I was honest with Eric and told him exactly that. That I didn't know much about curly hair and wanted to learn. He seemed extremely offended for some reason and was downright rude to me. He was very uncommunicative throughout the service, simply grabbing the products and throwing them into my hair without saying a word until I ask him what products he's using. Even then his replies were abrupt and short. This would not have been a problem had it been a regular cut and style but this service is supposed to be so you can learn and talk about your hair care. I was struggling to keep a track of all the things he was using and the technique he was using while he yanked at my hair. It seemed like someone was forcing him to do the work and that it was very unpleasant for him. Admittedly, some of my questions may have sounded stupid to him since he's the "master stylist" but in all honesty, if I had known how to use the products on my own, I would NOT be paying for this service that actually says on the website is designed to help people learn the "fundamentals" of curl care. Being downright condescending and rude to clients is simply unacceptable. Anything he wanted to say could have been said in a nicer way. But his remarks and replies were simply insulting. One good thing I'll say is that I was happy with the end result, my curls seemed a lot more defined and healthy and I've already placed an order for all the products he used. However, I have never had such a rude hair stylist ever before. If only this was enough. The girl who cut my hair was Tatiana and she was incredibly nice and courteous. She made me feel welcome and listened to what I wanted. Unfortunately I'm extremely unhappy with the haircut she gave me. I'm attaching pictures taken right after I got home. Two strands of hair on one side of my head are hanging down noticeably lower than the rest of my hair. It looks so uneven and weird. I asked for subtle blended layers around the back for some movement which I think is a very simple request, nothing too drastic and has always yielded consistent results and multiple salons that I've tried. This cut seems to be given by an amateur and not a professional! It was not a cheap cut and now I'll have to go to another place to get it fixed. I am not super picky about my haircuts as everything sort of just works when you have long hair. But this haircut is just wrong, and shows plain incompetence. I feel really bad saying this because the stylist was so nice! Going through other reviews, it seems that uneven hair is a recurring problem at the salon. While she was cutting my hair I noticed the technique she was using seemed a bit strange as I've never had anyone cut my hair that way. So Maybe the salon needs to work on their technique. Will take pictures after I blow dry them straight to further show the uneven strands. Would also like to add that the salon does not have much ambience, it is cramped and shabby looking - although I don't care about that as this doesn't impact quality of service. Horrified and appalled at my experience. Especially since the salon claims to be "the best in Philadelphia" and all the stellar reviews. The two stars are for good customer service by Tatiana and the good curl routine by Eric. However, when you pay for a service, the least you expect is to be respected and to leave with even hair on both sides. Simply unacceptable. SO disappointed. Smh. read more

Charlie Cash is a blonde hair wizard! He did the best coloring job I have ever had done. I am thrilled with the result. I went in Saturday for my consultation and he was really considerate of my wants and needs for my hairstyle. So he sent me home with a homework assignment to find some reference pictures of what I wanted my hair to look like and the next day he fit me into his busy schedule! I couldn't be happier with my results either. So overall: The salon is gorgeous, the staff is friendly, there are tons of hair products available for sale (which they don't make commission on so they won't unnecessarily push on you to purchase), salon services aren't outrageously priced, and most importantly Charlie works there! I was horribly disappointed when I walked in and the stylist I was scheduled with had literally just started an up-do (he had curled one piece of hair) and was running and hour behind. Second time getting my hair coiffed at the new Andre Richard Salon space. It's gorgeous in there -- light-filled and comfortable space with good tunes and strong coffee to keep you buzzing through. Before we did anything, Drea checked my scalp with her calliascope which showed some product buildup but overall, she said it looked good. Drea helped me take my color up a couple of notches with some fresh caramel highlights to amplify my natural hue. Hair magic happens here and they never disappoint. I dislike writing bad reviews, but I need to speak up here. I made an appt for an out of town wedding to get a style done. I couldn't attend the wedding so I gave the appt to my sister. She texted me that morning that she would have to cancel bc they couldn't get there in time due to traffic. However, she did not. I explained this when I called them and told them about the misunderstanding. I actually spoke with them on the phone 3 times in full detail as to what happened. They informed me that I would be charged the FULL appt price bc of the cancellation. Now I completely understand policies. However, an exception COULD have been made, and they charged my card $65.00. We live 2 hours away. Things happen. I would NOT recommend coming here. Also- my spot was taken by someone else. I know this because I had a family member in the salon getting their hair done. Everyone here was great! Came in for a devacut with Eric and brows with Suki, I left feeling fabulous and refreshed. Eric did a great job dry cutting my hair and listened to how I like to style it and kept my curls nice and soft, added layers and trimmed my dead ends. Service is top notch, they offer free beverages while you wait and include washes with men's cuts. You can also book appointments via their website, which is super convenient because you can see all the time slots/availability of a stylist of your choice. Ryan has been cutting my hair for almost a year now and always does a superb job. He is very knowledgeable on proper techniques and is able to do the various style requests I make. I always come out feeling great after his cuts. I am one of those people who is loyal to their stylists/nail salon/massage, etc. I had been seeing the same stylist for about 4 years and was starting to feel that my hair didn't have that special "oomph" any more after getting my normal highlights and color. I wanted to try a new place and stylist out that was closer to home and I mentioned to another business owner around the block who highly recommended Andre Richard Salon. After my usual Yelp and Facebook stalking, I decided this was somewhere I wanted to try. I was reading up on the Bayalage technique and there were photos of Stephanie's work on their Facebook page so I knew she would be perfect to help me achieve a more natural look. I offered some of my ideas and she was able to perfectly execute them, she practically matched up my color exactly and did an awesome blend from root to tip. I've already received so many compliments on how natural and shiny my hair looks. Stephanie did cut my hair as well and I am very pleased. Morgan did my first balayage and it came out gorgeous. Now, the only issue was that the color is not the color I wanted. I showed her pics before we started, so I seriously thought it was going to at least be a similar color scheme. I was under the impression that when hairstylist that specializes in coloring & painting techs, would see a pic and be like ok I see what color your going for and I'm going to make it look like it or damn close to it. But the color came out way different, I mean so different that it has been 3 days since I was there, and I don't know if it's a Dark Auburn or some sort of blend of Dark Auburn and something else! lol I truly love my hair, it's cool. I was looking for a solution to tame my frizz not wanting to go the keratin route and ended up booking the phyto relaxer treatment here thinking it's just a smoothing treatment. I know, stupid me! My appointment was booked with Drea, the master stylist here. One look at my hair and she said I don't need to go the relaxer route. I just need some deep conditioning to hydrate my hair. Every time I have called the salon, their receptionist has always been friendly and courteous- and is even more so in person! I picked out Chad -as a stylist on blind luck, and I was so happy I did. Not quite having the industry vocabulary for what exactly I wanted, Chad took the time to make sure I knew what I wanted before even picking up his scissors. When I provided options and ideas with photos, he pointed out what would and could work with my hair type and features, and what would not work. came here super excited needing a change made an appointment a month ahead of time. The day of my appointment, I asked if it was okay if I came in a 15-30 after my appointment because of work, they said no at first then said sure but your hair won't be dry when you leave. First of all I'm laying 200+ ALMOST 300 and you're saying I won't get my full service! So I just switched to another day another stylist. He demands I get a blow out, when I say I wasn't prepared for it money wise he says I won't do your hair unless you get the blowout like what? Put that on your page that it's a rule for new customers so I can come prepared. I have dark brown hair and I wanted to transform into a blonde Balayage very possible obviously I know it's a process. He was basically whining about how impossible it's gonna be when I said I wanted to go silver originally he said "sometimes you have to accept some dreams don't come true" "you might as well go to China to get whatever color your looking for they have the illegal stuff" I'm just in shock by these comments obviously you're not a good Stylist if you think what I'm asking is impossible. You don't make your customers feel like they're a hassle because of the hair they have. Yes it's thick but it's straight as can be so what's the problem Ryan you bragged on and on about your 7 year experience. How he touched and talked about my hair it felt like he wanted me to be ashamed of it. I called and left a message for the manager to call me back 3 times and it's been months I've yet to get a callback. I honestly hate that I ever spent my money on this establishment I don't feel like I was treated fairly I feel like if I was white I would've gotten more respect for my hair. The way he was touching my hair and making comments and stuff it just didn't feel right he is an expert stylus as they say you pay about 60 to 70 more to get somebody who claims are an expert but he should've put in his bio that he has a nasty attitude and he's rude and you should've put that he doesn't know how to blend hair. Because after sitting in the chair all day spending almost $300 to go home and have people tell me it's not even blended good. I rather have paid 165 and had one of the beginners do it. I said I wanted my hair cut he decided next time I come in I can do it!!! Didn't even ask me if that was okay. The color was ok not the best but not the worst not gonna lie but blended horrible and he was lazy with the bottom half of my hair he highlighted it and bleached the top. That's not what I asked for nor is that Balayage, experience horrible. How dare he say he's an expert anything. At Adre I paid 195 just to get a non balayage style done, toner for 35 and blow out for 40 Honestly have never been more annoyed if he wasn't being lazy with my hair I wouldn't have mind the price. Stylist was Ryan. Arrogant and cocky but this is how he left my hair. He was lazy with it and that was the opinion of three other professionals obviously he's not talented enough to do someone with my kind of hair so he shouldn't have even attempted it.
