I'll start by saying I have gone to Ellen multiple times in the past and she had previously done very nice bob haircuts for me. At the prices she offers I was happy to give her my business. However, today I asked for a straight undercut with a hard part behind my ears (I showed her pictures from Pinterest with an example of what I wanted). I started to get nervous when I realized she was using clips to put up my hair in a seemingly random way, (as opposed to using a hair tie to keep the part straight) but I had never gotten an undercut before so I didn't say anything. When she showed me what she did with my hair, I first noticed a large nick completely off the line of the part. I asked her if she would be able to fix it by making the undercut higher on my head. She responded by saying "that would be so much more work." I honestly didn't know what to say. Also, the shave itself was patchy with different lengths, which she attempted to blend when I asked her to. Upon seeing the final results in the shop, I could tell it did not look like I wanted, but couldn't really see it clearly. When I got home I had my boyfriend take pictures of the back of my head to show me what it looked like, and I was shocked at how terrible it was. (SEE PICTURES!). This is a great place to get a haircut. I have been going here since I moved to Baltimore to attend Johns Hopkins. Although there are multiple barbershops and salons in my area, getting on the 83 Expressway and heading up to Charles Village is totally worth it to get my hair cut by Ellen (the owner). Before you go, you should make sure you know exactly how you want your hair cut. Don't dilly dally as she is usually booked solid. Also, if you want a certain amount of hair cut off the sides, specify that - don't let her cut it and then ask her to cut even shorter. That's almost like asking for two haircuts and isn't fair to her since other clients are waiting. Some may say that is not good service - I disagree. If you don't know how you want your hair cut, go to another salon or go to a chain - they can afford to let you sit in their chair for an hour while you decide. Ellen is extremely witty, funny and doesn't take crap from anyone. You can count on a funny story or two while you get your haircut, and maybe if you're lucky, you'll even get an insult or two thrown your way. Don't worry, it is all in good fun. She is extremely nice and does a great job - just don't waste her time. There is a great student discount so if you're a student, this is the best place to go, in my opinion. Make sure you make an appointment. If you just walk in, it is unlikely you'll be able to get an open slot. read more

Ellen is an awful human being. I went there earlier this year to get my hair cut. During the course of our conversation, we got to the topic of the 2020 elections and I told her which candidate I liked. She then became verbally abusive to me, swearing at me, and just generally being rude and hostile, blaming me for all the "problems" of my generation and calling me an "America hater" for liking a particular candidate. I should've just stood up right then and there and walked out. This witch will never get my business again, and true to my word, I've never been back since. read more

Ellen (the owner) was extremely nice and personable throughout my haircut. I came with a friend, both of us requesting walk in appointments, and she finished both of our hairs in under an hour total while still maintaining friendly conversation and telling us about her time in Baltimore. I showed her a photo of the hair style I wanted and she cut it almost exactly how I imagined. She had great service and was very pleasant to talk too. I will definitely be returning for future haircuts, a great option for any new Hopkins students looking for a haircut that is extremely reasonably priced. read more

My husband gets his hair cut here and always has a great experience. No one else seems to get his hair right and Ellen is the only person that I trust to do a good job. From what I hear, she is a little bit Baltimore if you catch my drift, but my husband absolutely adores her and her charm. I also agree with the other reviewer who said to know exactly what you want before you go in. She always forgets the way my husband likes his hair cut (she has lots of customers!) and, actually, so does he so sometimes it gets cut a little shorter than he'd like, but despite this it's still a fantastic job. read more

Ellen was great.... I don't want and can't afford a hoity toity...salon.... And she got me in there very next day....all by email....and I left a happy...very happy client.... She rocks and this is where I will be going. If its a new style or something different ...do take some photos of what you want and she is happy to look and work with what you want....
