Their food truck is a travelling Texas Style Wood Burning BBQ rig that cranks out Kosher Barbecue. The truck is cleverly named the Wandering Que and as it travels it creates pop-up restaurants across the metropolitan tri-state area, down toward Philadelphia, and up into New England. Today, we caught up with the Que it as it wandered toward the Crown Market in West Hartford, CT and popped up in Crown's parking lot. We bought two items - a Texas Hold-Em sandwich ($20) with Kosher Pulled Brisket and Kosher smoked sausage and a container of Smoked Egg Drop Soup ($5). The sandwich came in a Styrofoam container with a scoop of red cabbage and carrot slaw, a few pickle slices, and a nice roll on one side and a big pile of those meats on the other side. The sandwich was unassembled so the roll wouldn't get soggy. The Egg Drop Soup tasted more like beef broth than egg drop soup, but it was pretty darned good and had quite a few shreds of beef in there. I thought the brisket and the sausage were pretty good and the portion of meat (plus the fact that they were Kosher) helped justify the $20 cost. On the down side, I have to say the administration of the whole pop-up was a mess. We had to wait more or less at four different stations to walk away with our food: 1) wait on a line before you approached the food truck's ordering window, 2) when given the go ahead, approach the window and place your order, 3) get on another line to pay, and 4) wait more until your food order was ready. All of this took roughly an hour today, no lie. I've been to a lot of food trucks over the years, and I've never seen such a drawn out, convoluted and super slow process as this. And I was very disappointed from a food safety/public health point of view to see that one of their gents used the same less than mint condition gloved hands to count the money and process the credit cards as he did to scoop up some sliced scallions into my soup container. read more

BEWARE - Do not place an order with this business (Wandering Que/Hakodesh BBQ/Gemstone Caterers and whatever other DBA or aliases it may have). On June 7, after speaking with Ari White, I placed an order through PayPal (containing instructions) for a Kosher Carnivore package to be delivered on June 17th. Later that same day, I phoned Ari and receiving no response, followed up with an email to confirm that everything was received. I never heard back. I continued to phone and send emails (both through direct email and through the Wandering Que website) through June 18, and never heard back. Needless to say, the package was never delivered, and I filed a claim with PayPal. read more

RIP OFF REPORT (See Gemstone Caterers - Same management, same ownership) I placed an order totaling over $200 on their website. 2.5 weeks later and nothings been delivered. For 2-weeks I could never get anyone on the phone and emailed them numerous times. I finally posted on their facebook page asking for a response and only then did I hear back and my comment was deleted!! They then decided to tell me I hadn't included enough money for delivery but that if I sent more money then it would be delivered the next day. I paid the extra money and now 5 days later not only have they not sent the food but they haven't even responded to my messages asking when it will be delivered. I emailed the owner asking for a refund.... No Respone. I finally disputed the charge with the bank tonight. The food may be good but I'd stay away from the catering business. The. Best. Kosher. BBQ. In the whole world. It's ineffible. In. Effing. Effable. I'm talkin' giant smoked Turkey drumsticks that taste of the apple wood they were slow smoked on. I'm talkin' pulled brisket incred-o-sammiches with fresh brilliant slaw concoctions and fresh lime-ade. This is the real deal. Better go to their site and find out where they will be next. Had the shredded barbequed brisket with coleslaw and pickles on the side at the street fair today. DELICIOUS BRISKET! Some suggestions to the vendor: - Season the coleslaw better; it tasted like watery cabbage - Serve more and zestier pickles (Jews love their pickles and these were underwhelming) - DISPLAY YOUR BRAND. I had no clue who or what "Wandering Que" was. I actually thought a bad speller was telling patrons that there was no real line, but to just walk up and order. After five minutes, I realized the play-on-words (wandering Jew) and that Que was short for BBQ and figured you guys didn't have an actual store front, but just frequented various street fairs. Easily the best barbecue I've ever had, and hands down the best in NYC. On one hand I wish it were a brick and mortar, but on the other hand if it were it would easily develop into an addiction and I'd be twice my weight. Ari has been doing his Wandering Que pop-up restaurant throughout NYC, and after a few months of waiting I was fortunate enough to partake when he brought the Wandering Que to The Bayit in Riverdale. I walked away with brisket, burnt ends, beef ribs, turkey legs, and lamb shanks. The brisket was the most moist and least dried out smoked brisket of any restaurant i've been to (Including Hill Country), and the beef rib was freaking amazing; it had an incredible sweet/savory/smoky bark. The lamb and turkey were both smoked perfectly as well. I nearly forgot the lamb belly bacon beans, which were also fantastic. I'm glad I bought extra because I'm going to crave this bbq for a while and will be sad when it's all gone. read more

They were set up at a shul in crown heights for the past 2 days. This food is so good, words can hardly describe. I went 3 times in the 2 days they were there. I had the pulled brisket, pulled chicken, lamb belly bacon baked beans, spare ribs, cornbread and burnt ends. Fan-frickin-tastic. read more

My overall experience was very disappointing, but some of the food is quite good. The turkey legs are tasteless and chewy. The lamb shanks are tasteless, tough, and very overpriced ($25-$30). The rib is good, but INSANELY overpriced. They charged me $45 for ONE RIB at a street fair. Has anyone ever paid $45 for anything at a street fair? Of course, they didn't tell me the price until after they charged my card. The only delicious dishes are the pulled beef sandwich and the smoked beef sandwich. The coleslaw is terrible, as is the service. The prices are not displayed well, they are all too happy to squeeze an extra expensive item onto your order without warning, and the owner is rude. Although I had a terrible experience, and the owner explicitly told me he has no interest in improving his MO or taking constructive criticism from customers, I may go back for one of those sandwiches, at some point.
