I started with the coffee which is usually good This time every blend had no " nose" there was nothing to awaken the senses and say pick me. Moving on through the store the shelves were bare, quite unusual for Stews. Of course there were samples to entice purchases. The main reason for going this trip was for their version of the Carvel flying saucer. Its excitement and overstimulated sights and sounds all around..... You don't know where to look next, there's soft serve plants, veggies needs seafood merch, even a well-stocked spirits and wine store off to the right at the entrance. The staff is friendly, the food is fresh. Was in Yonkers with some time on my hands after my appointment. Figured while I was in the neighborhood I'd stop at Stew Leonard's - Yonkers. I was always impressed with the service, the selections available and quality. The saying " you get what you pay for". The prices are maybe, a little more expensive, but I've never felt cheated. I've been going there for over 20 years. Never disappointed; until today. I've always found Quality, I'm able to find just what I want and in quantities that are not warehouse sized. Tried the one in Norwalk, a few years ago. That one was very disappointing, even the parking is a bit of an annoyance. Picked up a little over $100 in groceries. Saw the veal scallopini; in the meat case great for a classic Sunday dinner. Asked the butcher if they were sliced thinly? He said yes. Great! Up in Dutchess County, sadly, It's almost impossible to find somebody that knows how to do it properly. When I got home and opened the package, there was one that looked like somebody hit it with a shotgun. See the most recent photo. 7/6/25 A child could've done a job better with a scissors. One of the others was a little bit too thick, almost like a thin steak. I could sit here and whack it with a meat mallet; hoping to get it thin enough. But, why should I? And demand a rebate or properly cut veal scallopini. But, a little over a two hour round-trip drive, 120 miles, plus the wasted gas makes it prohibitive and disappointing. What should have been a simple, peaceful visit turned into one of the most uncomfortable and hostile experiences I have ever had in a retail setting. At the Yonkers location, I encountered an employee named Melanie at the ice cream counter whose behavior was not only unprofessional, but openly hostile. Our order was taken incorrectly multiple times, and when corrected, her demeanor escalated. Melanie displayed an angry, aggravated expression paired with a sarcastic smile that made the interaction feel intentionally disrespectful. She handled items aggressively and served food carelessly, creating a mess on both myself and the counter. When I asked for assistance, Melanie told me to handle it myself. The situation escalated further when her hostility continued in front of other customers, including families and children. Even after a manager intervened, Melanie refused to step away, continued smiling and laughing in a sarcastic, demonic, and dismissive manner, and showed clear disregard for leadership. That level of insubordination, combined with visible hostility toward a customer, is unacceptable in any customer-facing environment. As a result, I was unable to enjoy my purchase, and my father chose not to receive his order at all just to avoid further interaction. That speaks volumes. This was not a bad day or a minor service issue. This was a complete breakdown in professionalism, accountability, and respect. They have a great deli, bakery, and a good combination of in store products and brand name favorites. They are more expensive than Trader Joe's but their prices are much more reasonable than Whole Foods and some local grocery chains in the NYC/ Westchester area. I still enjoy shopping at Stews because the food is fresh for the most part but as of late, I have noticed that they tend to put meat products on sale with a 1-2 day expiration date and at times, the date is not accurate and the meat might turn earlier than, or on the expiration date. I have had several occurrences where I have had to return meat or seafood because it was off and I did not want to ingest it and get sick. I have never been met with a problem until today and because customer service has always been on the side of the consumer (as per Stew's own commercials), I always felt like they were eager to rectify a situation. I purchased some bone-in New York strips on sale and the sell by/use by date was a few days away. I planned to used it within the time. I cooked one pack with no issued but when I went to open the second pack on the expiration date, the meat looked odd and the odor emitted was horrible. My family moved back to the Bronx so it's difficult to run to Stews when I have to return something. I'm the past, I've never had an issue with a return of an item, especially when it went bad, even after the use by/sell by date. It hasn't happened often but the few times it has (bad shrimp, bad steak, bad ground beef, bad whole chicken), I was never met with any issue at customer service. I also was never informed of any policy regarding returning items. When I brought this particular steak back, it was a few days after the use by date, the earliest I could bring the item back. A manager was called and she informed me that their policy will not allow an exchange or refund for turned items unless the customer either calls in or emails the company to inform them of the issue. When I asked how long this policy was in effect, she stated that she had been working there for two years and it was always in effect during her employ. What's odd, is that one of the employees in the customer service area actually took care of a similar return for me a year or so prior, and he never informed me of this policy. He allowed me to exchange a product that had gone bad, for a fresher package. While they did give me a "one-time" (apparently) refund, they would not allow me to exchange for a different package that was fresher, at the sale price. I was disappointed because it's a drive to/from Stews during most hours of the day, and had I known about this policy, I would have called/emailed when I first observed the problem. Stew Leonards prides themselves on customer service. They even have a plaque that states that their first rule is the customer is always right. Obviously, this should be taken with a grain of salt but within reason, I think they should have allowed me to exchange the product. Firstly, we purchased meat the went bad too early, secondly, the day the meat went bad, we had to find an alternative to dinner (delivery), and lastly, I had to schlep back up to Stews with dank and rotting meat, not even knowing they had such a policy. I'm sure the customer service employees I interacted with previously likely just gave me an exchange/refund because they either just wanted to take the easiest course of action or did not know the policy. What the company should do is post this policy information in their stores and ensure that all customer-facing employees are aware of and practice the policy, as well as inform their customers. read more

I never thought Stew Leonard's would succumb to what many other supermarkets are doing with regard to higher price, less excellence, and less amount. I recently bought two baguettes from the Yonkers location and was surprised to find an insect lodge in the bread. I was busy taking a bite and something told me to look down...to find this creature. I immediately sent a feedback email to the Stew Leonard's team. Their response was so lackluster, all they said was send a copy of the receipt to get a refund. No cause for concern at all. We try to make it here at least a couple times a month if not more everything's always fresh they have things for the kids and the adults to spend $100. You have an ice cream or coffee on your app which is easier to use. We love coming here, the service is impeccable the staff is wonderful and there's always tons of things to do that involve food, which is one of my personal favorites in a supermarket or take things home they're already prepared. The layout is a curvy lane that takes you through all the departments (meat, fish, bakery, etc.). Some of the staples such as creamer have a limited selection of brand options and household items like soap and detergent are not sold at all. But that's not why you come here. The fresh and unique items and the discounted wine makes this a fun experience. They even have a coffee bar, an outdoor garden center, and an outdoor grill that sells burgers and bbq. Stew's in Yonkers is great. Their prepared foods are so delicious and their bread and baked goods far surpass private bakeries. I had some catering done by them recently and everything was excellent and reasonably priced. By the time you shop and prepare, having them do all the work was more cost effective. I find this establishment to be awesome. I also like how the place flows. Its like I'm in a barn going in one direction but coming out from the same end. Kind of going around in a circle, a huge one. Anyway they have alot of good items here. From fresh bakery treats, fresh veggies, nice fish market area, great cheese selection, good meat area, and not to mention prepared food items, so diverse you are sure to find something you like. It really is a great market that reminds me of a farm inside a barn if that makes any sense lol, with farmers market items and produce. Not to mention the great wine area they have inside the place. You can find just about anything here and the prices are pretty good compared to regular grocery stores. They also have hot or cold prepared meals and make their own dairy on site. Some other nice features are a huge variety of fresh meat & seafood, an ice cream stand outside, large attached liquor store with an impressive selection of wine.
