This place is awesome! Especially if you live in south Austin, you don't have to drive as far to tame your Halal Bros cravings. Taste wise it's pretty similar, prices are cheap for the portion, and they are open late. My favorite thing to get is the gyro over rice. They even have the gyro meat on the spinning block so you know it's good! Always ask for red sauce on the side because it is pretty spicy. This place is a hidden gem. NYC has spoiled me for halal food trucks and I've had a tough time finding one here in Austin that perfectly captures that level of flavor and spice. Halal Gurus is in a gas station Parkin lot, but don't let the location fool you. They serve up authentic gyros and the portions are terrific! I always go for the gyro wrap with double meat and extra hot sauce. Their baklava is delicious too, just the right amount of sticky sweetness! They open daily at noon, just in time for lunch and are services by grub hub if you need delivery! I recommend going in person though, because the guys who work here are so nice and they remember your order and even throw in a free bottle of water! read more

I don't understand the hype and all three of my friends were completely disappointed. Maybe there is another location (maybe east that is better)? The food was a total meh. We ordered the chicken over rice and the gyro- to be honest - boring food. I won't order from this place again. Pretty flavorless grub - not fresh, and to have chosen this for a little fun birthday lunch for everyone to eat with me was quite disappointing. It was so bad I almost drove back to get a refund, but it wasn't worth the 15 minute drive to invest back into this place. I tried the combo rice plate with the gyro and chicken and good lawd it was so damn good. They gave a very generous portion and everything was seasoned perfectly. I followed a reviewer's advice and asked for my meal without the salad and asked for extra white sauce. The quality and quantity has been great so far until recently. I am a regular at halal gurus. They are reducing the quantity of rice every time. Whats great about Halal gurus, their rice but it seems they are reducing the size of rice servings. 1 order of falafal over rice use to feed 2 people, now its not even good enough to fill up one person. 4.5. This is tasty food man no lie. I would eat here again. When you're from NYC you've had the best of the best halal food fresh from the cart with the epic white sauce. This comes very very close. Honestly this is better than the Halal Guys that onde started as a staple cart in NYC and grew into a chain. This is way better than that. I'm comparing this to some of the others (Adel's famous or Sammy's in queens), hence the 4.5 and not 5 but this is still solid Halal Food for a good value and great taste. White sauce isn't bad - it's creamy but missing something. We got the regular chicken and rice and chicken shawarma - both were good! I like that they give the salad and I don't like that the pita is extra (at least for me pita was an extra side) whereas I'm used to it being part of the meal, arriving drenched in white sauce The hot sauce - BOMB. Love the hot sauce. But the aforementioned are just little gripes - big picture is if you're a fan of halal street platters this is not a bad. So I never had halal food before trying this place and now it's all I crave! I ordered a number 12 which is the combination of lamb, beef, and chicken on pita bread with cucumbers, tomatoes, and this amazing white sauce. Gosh it was so good!! And the service is excellent and the workers are really friendly. In my opinion, they're definitely better than The Halal Bros because the Bros don't have a combination gyro on their menu like the Gurus do. read more

I had been wanting to try this place out for some time and finally gave it a go last Friday. Food was just okay, but even more horrific was the cleanliness of the place. You can't tell from the outside but when I went to pay I noticed that the grill was disgusting and covered in random meats scattered around the pots and pans. I was honestly terrified but starving so I ate about 1/3 of my wrap and threw it away which was cold to boot. Clean it up guys or I'm sure more people will complain. read more

Never again. We've been wanting to try this place. Their on-line order form from their site charges $1-$3 per item above their cost AND a service fee. My bad for thinking the app on their site would be the same as their menu since they charged a service fee. (Like Thundercloud subs which doesn't rip people off.) It would have been okay this one time had my food been ready in 15 minutes like the app said but he didn't even have my order pulled up. I said it was ridiculous that I paid $8.50 over the menu price so my food would be ready but had to wait 15 minutes for him to make everything. He yelled and said I should have called him and the third party app charges what they want and I have have to wait. Zero customer service. I want my tip back. Food wise - chicken plate was good and so was the eggplant dish. Falafel was dry and bland - 4 in a foam box with nothing (adding pita could have helped keep them warm). Dolmas was not good - cold, hard, tangy and so poorly packed that the juice got all over everything. It's like they were spooned out of a jar. Received one pita bread. So disappointed. read more

Best gyro I've had in Austin, by far. The menu says they use pita bread but it's really flatbread, which is infinitely better in my opinion. The gyro meat was delicious. Great amount of sauce. Word of caution, their hot sauce is extremely hot. So if you prefer a less spicy sandwich, get the hot sauce on the side. My only slight issue was with the hummus and that's only because I prefer a chickpea heavy hummus and this one has a lot of tahini. If that's your thing, you'll love it. Very pleasantly surprised. I give an extra star for the very convenient South 1st Street location, the interesting yet friendly vibe of the people lounging around Texaco gas station, and the late hours. Halal Gurus did brisk business on Friday the Thirteenth. Their loyal fans were determined to get their Middle eastern fix come hell or high water. Luckily there was only one person in line ahead of me but after i ordered there was steady traffic; the #4 (chicken & gyros with rice) was the crowd pleaser, at least at 11:15 pm. Falafel wrap and gyros wrap--which took a mere 10 minutes to be lovingly created-- were fresh and tasty, with a delicious dressing/sauce enveloping the lettuce & tomato, and inhaled instantaneously. The tasty pita/naan which tasted home made rather than factory-made was the *clincher.* The hot sauce was super hot, maybe akin to sriracha? A 5th star would be warranted had the gyro meat been sliced in slabs (it was diced into morsels/cubes) and the falafel had been served in patties/balls rather than crumbly&browned. I would have liked larger portions, next time i gotta try the french fries. A bit odd that they sold NO beverages, but, hey, you could get those 2 ft away at the Texaco station, right? But during COVID it would have been super nice to be able to buy a Topo Chico or equivalent directly from the outdoor food truck of Halal Gurus. Not so much of a guru! I ordered the chicken shawarma wrap and it was a disaster. First of all shawarma is middle eastern food, not Indian food! The guy that made it was Indian not middle eastern at all. Also it took forever to get the order, he said it would only take 10 min and I was waiting for 20 just for a wrap. Then when I opened it to eat it, it had carrots on it?! Shawarma isn't supposed to have carrots on it, it was disgusting. Then the white sauce he put on it tasted like the sauce they put on coleslaw which is disgusting as well. If your going to have a food truck serving middle eastern dishes you might want to know how to cook them first! Definitely will never go there again!!! I've been here quite a few times but mostly out of convenience being so close to home. The plates have some solid flavor, with the meat and rice. I rate them 3/5 due to their gyros being mediocre. And the costumer service isn't that good either. AND they don't give you extra pita bread with your plate. There are plenty of other halal food trucks around Austin (Gyro Express off dirty sixth and Kurry Takos off east Cesar chavez) that have some amazing tasting gyros, excellent plates WITH a side of pita bread AT NO EXTRA COST. Pretty good from my experience. I'm not seasoned in Halal food at all, so I don't have anything to compare to like everyone here comparing to New York Halal Bros or whatever elite New York stunt they are pulling, but I do like the food. I can't say the beef shwarma was all that good, but the lamb and chicken is delicious! Their falafel is definitely some of the best I've had.
