There was still a line at 11 PM, which tells you everything you need to know. It's a little hidden on the corner of a gas station, but don't let that fool you. I wasn't a fan of the red spicy sauce, but the tzatziki was delicious. Next time, I'm trying the tabouli. Great food, open late, and I'd definitely come back. read more

Options are classic like chicken/gyro/combo over rice with perfectly tasty sauces that compliment well. Meals are reasonable with generous sizes. Everything comes out quickly and piping hot. It is an amazing go-to during the week, providing high-quality food, extended hours, and quick service! I typically order the chicken over rice since it is so delicious. The quantity of food is just right, the white rice is well made, the chicken is marinated perfectly, and the white sauce is to die for! The salad is also a nice addition to the meal. For roughly $12, the price is worth it. The staff is always very kind and quick to make the food. I usually call ahead to let them know that I am coming so I have a shorter wait time. Unfortunately, the location is not safe and very sketchy. Recently I have seen more police nearby which makes me feel more safe. Man, Halal Hub is too good! This spot really grew on me after the first time. So simple yet so good. Quality rice, delicious proteins and an amazing white sauce and red sauce to pour over it all. Everything here is good, chicken is extremely tender and delicious. I order the lamb shawarma quite a lot with extra meat just because it is so good and I like a lot of protein. Meats are flavorful and rice compliments them so expertly. Salad is refreshing, lacking a bit of flavor but I find mixing it in with rice and having white sauce with it seems to be the best way to enjoy it. People who run the truck are very nice and food comes out quick every time. My girlfriend and I eat here almost once a week and for the price we love this slightly healthier treat for an impromptu meal. Only downside to this place is the area is pretty sketchy especially at night. Keep that in mind but often there are cops around which is nice. My sister and I placed an order for pick-up as a Friday night treat before watching Rings of Power. We each ordered a #2 Gyro Over Rice (lamb/beef mix), as well as an order of pita, baklava, double meat, and Baba Ghanouj. This location is a stationary food truck located outside of a spirits (liquor) store. Unfortunately, I do not recommend the location at night as it felt a bit unsafe and there were a lot of people milling around. Parking was easy enough and the area had very easy access as it is located on the corner. After picking up our food and coming home, everything had been very neatly organized and nothing was missing, etc. A successful food pick up! The food was decent but nothing to really excite the tastebuds, unfortunately. The meat was delicious, but that was really the only part that felt worth it to me. The baklava was not very flavorful, the Baba Ghanouj was incredibly oily and lacked any kind of flavor - I ended up seasoning it at home to make it have a taste. The pita was fairly standard. As an aside, the "white sauce" mostly tasted like a buttermilk or ranch sauce and the red sauce just tasted extremely spicy/hot, but otherwise my palette was not refined enough to pick up any other flavors. I'd probably come back for a main meal, but wouldn't add anything extra to my order. And would plan to have another sauce on hand - although I enjoyed the main meal just fine without any sauce. read more

A more rickety truck can not be imagined. The wood picnic tables are warped and falling apart. The pillars holding up the roof in front of the truck are leaning at all sorts of crazy angles. They are not long for this world. The Halal Gurus (Hub) are so outstanding - they deserve a crystal palace ... not just a truck next to a convenience store. * * * The cuisine is a fusion of Middle Eastern and Malay/Indonesian. The mains are standard Middle Eastern food - falafel, gyros, pita. The sauces are Malay. The red sauce is a classic sambal. The white sauce may be of their own creation but I suspect is simply a Malay sauce I have never encountered before. Imagine a Tzatziki Yogurt sauce made with mayonnaise rather than yogurt and spiced differently. The red sauce is to die for. It is utterly magnificent. The white sauce is to die for. It is utterly magnificent. It does not hurt that the gyros are halal. Halal meat is simply better than plain old American meat. You would want to eat halal even if you had no religious reason for doing so - because the stuff is not factory processed, and the steers eat a real diet. This is simply tastier meat. Falafel is always halal since it is vegetarian. Their falafel crumbles like a good hamburger but is first rate with whatever texture it has. * * * This may easily be one of the top twenty food trucks in Austin. I give it an absolute top recommendation. That said - Two rules to follow here. a) Gyros do not wait. Do not even think about loading these dishes into your car and eating them at home. The time to eat these is the minute they hand their food to you. You are eating on that rickety picnic table under that rickety roof. If you think there is going to be an earthquake, move away from the roof. b) Ask for both sauces and dump all the sauce you can on your food. Implication: your meal is going to be messy as hell. Pretend you are Tamil. You wash your hands before eating. While you eat, your hands become completely covered in sauce . You wash your hands after eating. Since they don't offer a pitcher of water and a wash basin at the food truck, bring a great big fat roll of paper towels with you. (A fresh package of napkins can do the job too.) You will be going through a lot of paper towels or napkins before your lunch is over. * * * But the food will be so amazingly good that you just won't care. read more

I was craving some mediterranean food and remembered this truck off Oltorf, S. 1st. Being intrigued by the long lines they have late night, I decided to stop for early dinner. So glad I did! I throughly enjoyed a combo Gyro/Chicken over rice plate. A very generous portion served with a simple, crisp salad and all the yummy garlic and spicy sauce you can handle. I saw someone ask for any good Mediterranean spots online and I offered my suggestions. I then got a hankering for some myself and happened to spot this truck closer to my new home. I tried placing a phone order, but kept getting a busy signal. I finally got through right before I started heading that way. Turned out they didn't have my order ready and I kinda figured there might be an issue since the phone dude didn't even ask me for a name and I was too high to remember to tell him. My window order took about 10-15 min with no line. I can wait for freshly made grub, so no issues. It was way worth it in the end! I took a bite of the lamb gyro on my way home and I'm not sure how I managed to save the rest till I got home! The darn fluffiest pita I've had in a while! Not a huge amount of meat, but that's probably cause I'm a fatty American and would prefer more meat and french fries in mine! Hmm, maybe that's going to be my next request when I go again soon! Since moving to Austin. I crave certain foods that were a staple from my days in NYC. One is The Gyro. Whether it is pork base, beef, lamb or a combination of all three; I love my gyros and shawarma sandwiches. The guys at Halal Gurus do an excellent job. The beef and lamb gyro have that right combo of spices. It was moist. It had a perfect ratio of veggies to meat to pita. Did I say very tasty? After a few adult beverages, a gyro from The Halal Gurus hits the spot. Very good sandwich. A few days later took the wife to a fabulous dinner at this food truck...lol. We had two gyro plates. Again, a nice ratio of ingredients. Plenty of meat. Plenty of salad. The basmati rice was absolutely delicious. Very filling and awesome flavor. All their meals come with sauce on the side. The standard white sauce is the yogurt base. The hot sauce is five stars hot. I mean really hot. Lots of fire flavor. I had an order of falafels; very tasty. Crispy outside and flavorful center. Not oily and very moist. The Halal Gurus will be part of my go-to spots for food. It certainly has that NYC and Queens feel to halal food trucks and carts. The flavor profile is down pat. The white sauce tasted like thin cafeteria-style ranch dressing rather than an authentic, properly tangy, taziki or yogurt sauce. Red sauce was indeed red but lacked heat. KabobZi on Guadalupe at 29th is operated by a Lebanese family and their food is far superior, although it is a sit-down restaurant and not a trailer. read more
