We bought chicken from this place today to celebrate Mother's Day. Six people ate the chicken fresh out the oven and six got sick. We will report this supermarket to the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. Halalco started out as an ethical supermarket, but now that it has high foot traffic, the quality of their meat dropped significantly. They've been putting out bad meat on the shelf and now they're making people sick! Be ware! read more

OMG, I just recently discovered Bulgarian feta cheese, made from sheep's milk - YUMMY IN MY TUMMY!!! Crumbly, salty, delicate, delicious, and very tasty in tomato salads, with a sprinkle of salt (sparingly), ground pepper, lemon juice, olive oil,and sliced vine ripened tomatoes. The selection at the store is pretty good but their business practices seem a little dubious. First of all, barely anything has a price on it & even when it does there are times the cashier will put in an incorrect price at his own discrection. My wife bought a box of kabobs for $7.99 but the cashier thought it was ok to punch in $10. Just today I saw Shan masalas for $1.19. There was a "Buy 2, Get 1 free" pack. I went to checkout & the pack was ringed up at over $4. They basically charged more for the 3 pack even though it was"Buy 2, Get 1 free". They charged more than the standard $1.19 per pack & also sold the free pack. The store is good overall but make sure you ask the price from before & check your receipts. read more

Let me tell you first and most importantly I am very much surprised that these people are still in business.The selection at the store is pretty good but their business practices seem a little dubious.I'm Turkish I've been going to Halalco(included old location) over a decade for my Turkish Grocery.This morning I stopped by to get a few things from there and while I was shopping I couldn't see "MB Low Salt Black Olives" on shelf. So I stopped one of the store employee(Hassan)to ask if they have it.He looked at me with an angry face then responded "do you actually want the product itself or you just want to know the price?" I asked what do you mean?he repeated it again, then needless to say I got angry and responded to him saying "first you show me the product then let me decide whether I want to buy it or not".He said " look brother you have a long history here" what he said didn't make any sense to me so I asked him "what do you mean by that" then he said if you want to talk about it wait in front so we'll talk. After 30 minutes of waiting and still not knowing what I have done wrong. But thinking that I must have done something significant so the store employee dare to say to a customer "look brother you have a long history here". In the mean time I was trying to get the store owner's name so I can talk to him about his employee's action. Finally I found Management Office and explained to them what happened.Then that employee showed up and three of them started talking in their own language.Suddenly the employee turned to me said " I wasn't accusing you for stealing" at that moment I've seen where this was going.I asked what are you accusing me of then? He said "I've watched you in your previous visits and you were writing prices on a piece of paper while you were shopping" I was trying to make it a sense how would that make him upset. By the way the reason I was doing that because most of the time price tags on shelf didn't match up with the prices at the cash register.Either product didn't have a price or the price wasn't right in their system which I have never made a big deal always thinking that no one is perfect mistakes happen here and there and hoping they can get better one day.(I must admit that they are fairly better organized now in their new location than old location, but still some of the items don't have a price tag and clutter) But of course I was still writing prices of my grocery on a piece of paper just to make sure that I won't get overcharged for the products I purchase. When I explained that to the owner's grandson he has started attacking me saying now you are accusing us,we never overcharge,our prices match with the price tags on display blah blah blah(Yeah sure! keep dreaming maybe your dream will come true one day).What he was doing trying to turn the story around to make it seem like I'm at fault deflecting attention and blame away from them to make me feel guilty.Then they started giving me many excuses how other competitors come to their store to check on their prices they thought I am one of them etc.etc. in that point he got me even more angry trying to justify his employee's offence.He told me if I don't like it not to come back to their store again. I said for 15 years I didn't have any issue despite of you are one of the worst,disorganized,sloppy store in Falls Church,one small apology could have calmed me down instead of justifying backing up his employee's wrong behavior.Then he told me "don't tell me how to run my business just don't come back again".These people are ignorance,rude, arrogant, they have no clue whatsoever about customer service and they profile their customers. Please do yourself a huge favor don't shop from here.Trust me I've never written a bad review about any place, but after I left from there I was sick in my stomach, I felt obligated to open a Yelp account to put a review about this store.I wonder even if they care and read Yelp reviews, because when I was in store they acted so innocent and played dumb, but it looks like I am not the first one who noticed that they overcharge in checkout, so many shoppers put bad reviews also about how they get overcharged. But in the past few years this place seems to be getting worse. a very rude assistant manager who took forever to ring me out cuz he was complaining about the lady before me for asking the real price for an item. I found a shelf full of Milka-brand chocolate bars in flavors such as yogurt filled, raspberry cream filled, etc, I almost bought them but I checked the expiration date and they had all expired between one and two YEARS prior. Such a find! It is like going into another country. It is probably the best halal market in the DC area, if not the East Coast. I am not Muslim but enjoy the variety of halal foods from all over the world. They are pretty strict on that, halal. The buffet is tugged away, behind the Muslim bookstore and apparel area. The goat curry and grilled chicken are delicious. The buffet is great. They sell halal meat and chicken too. This place may be under CIA surveillance. My imagination runs wild when I noticed a few American guys with their military hair style checking out the Quran books. One even walked to check out the buffet area. When I left the store, I saw a pitch black limousine sedan parking further away from the store under the tree. Interesting right? It could have been a part of the Bourne movie. Oh Well... I can't believe it has taken me this long to review Halalco! I LOOOVE this place. It's like a halal meat-lovers paradise! If you're unfamiliar with ethnic groceries, particularly halal grocers... let me tell you, these places normally STINK!! Halalco is super clean and is well-stocked. I drive out of my way to come here to load up on choice cuts of meat whenever I get a chance. They have a lot of variety in frozen meats (hot dogs, turkey bacon, burgers, etc) and a great selection in fresh meats as well. Aside from the regular choices beef, goat, and chicken, Halalco also has more "specialty" choices that are pretty much unheard of at regular halal meat stores. I'm talkin ground chicken, fresh beef or chicken sausage, ribs, thin strips of steak, and other stuff I haven't explored yet. They also have a great selection of sucuk (Turkish sausage), bologna, and some other pre-packaged deli-style meats that I don't know what to do with. I wish they had a better selection of fresh deli meats but occasionally they do have some really nice thick turkey slices. This isn't just a meat store though, there's also a full section of cheeses from the Middle East, some fresh veggies and herbs, plus the typical spices and foods that you find in an indian or arab grocery store (spice mixes, daal, cookies, etc). As if that wasn't enough, they have a HUGE section (like half the store) dedicated to Islamic books and paraphernelia (for lack of a better word). You can find prayer rugs, tasbi (prayer beads), clothing, jewelry, tea sets ... you get the point. If you're looking for halal meat (or anything else under the sun), this place is worth the trek. I have been a customer for over five years. Unfortunately, my last negative experience overshadows any positive experiences I had with this place. I had to return food items that were spoiled and moldy. This wasn't the first time other time I threw away a moldy package of olives. The cleanliness is questionable, shelves are dusty and unorganized, it takes forever to find certain items (spice shelves especially). So many items missing price tags or is marked with the wrong price. (The price tag says one thing the register shows another) I constantly have to bring several items to the register to find out the price which is annoying. But I was tolerating all that until my stomach was turned by opening a package of moldy fillo dough. When I returned to get a refund for the items, no apology was given. As a grocery store freshness of the food items in their stock and the cleanliness of the sales area should be given the utmost care and priority. I may still be back for non-food items and good priced hard to find spices but I am pretty turned off as a customer. read more

Found this place by chance and I 'm hooked. Needed fresh lamb to make a Lebanese dish. Meat was so fresh and tender. Real butchers with a very deep knowledge of different types of meat including goat! If you're looking for Middle eastern spices, bread, etc. Plus everyone who works there is so friendly! After going next door for years to the Red Hot and Blue in Falls Church; I finally gave in and went into the HALALCO Supermarket. I know its been there for years but I was also very timid in the idea of going there. I felt like it was a place that was completely off-limits. Surprisingly it was actually a decent supermarket. Err... Department store. They had huge secetions dedicated to Gifts, clothing, art, books, movies and CD's. This isn't your Tower Records (RIP) it's aimed at the Muslim community with a strong emphasis on Islamic studies. They had a large selection of books to teach both children and adults. Other than that it had a typical ethnic oriented supermarket. Lots of Middle Eastern provisions. Fruit and vegetables seemed to have been out for awhile. Some of it was already passed its ripeness. Some vegetables I couldn't even identify. I was really happy to find Vegetable and Beef Samosas. They're like empanadas only in a tetrahedron shape. They have a huge Halal Meat market with all types of cuts of meats. You can see the butchers ardently at work slicing and dicing the pieces. Today though I went to the restaurant in the back of the supermarket. They have a buffet during the weekday and weekends. I was a little hesitant from ording as there was no one in the "cafeteria-style" restaurant. They just had bubbling vats of food on the buffet. A few minutes later someone did come in, it was one of the butchers who waited for me to get my food and ring me up. I don't know what came over me but the air started to fill with this delicious smell. Too bad my eyes didn't agree with my nose. The food wasn't pretty but it had this awesome consistency. Available today was Goat with Green peppers, Cow feat (like my mother makes with Sopa de Tripa), some more beef, chick peas, salad, rice, mixed vegetables and some other thing I can't remember. The names were written in english letters but spoken in arabic. So I don't know. I was lucky to know what Cow feet looked like when I asked the butcher if it was what I thought it was. The butcher was probably the only guy who actually acknowledged me the whole time I was there. But he seemed really nice, telling me what the different foods were. Taste was Delicious. Didn't leave a morsel in my take out box. Beef feet were succulent. I had never tried goat but it was actually really good. It all had this nice flavor. The spices weren't overbearing like some other places. Price was relatively good. Considering the time of preperation and ingredients. Take out was $5.95 Lb. I have to say it was a good experience save the fact that the place was cluttered and did not get acknowledged by anyone until late. I work nearby so this will be one of my places to go when I need some middle eastern fix. read more

After searching the world over for decent kabob skewers (by decent I mean like the swords they use at kabob restaurants) my search has come to an end at Halalco! They have such a great selection of skewers and other cooking implements. Of course I decided to take a look around to see what else they have. They have a restaurant with a buffet (wasn't open while I was there), tons of middle eastern clothing, CDs, movies, and books, as well as a fairly extensive halal butcher area. They also sell tons of sauces and spices, though the arrangement is a bit chaotic, and it's not the cleanest or most orderly of places. If you're in need of some middle eastern imports, chances are they will have it here. The food has to be good so I'll definitely try to come back some time and check out the restaurant offerings. The owner of this place really tries to keep things in order. The prices are very good when you come here the people who work here are very nice. You can get different things that are Halal for a good price. I've tried their Sujak others might have an opinion on it. But I like it you can get lamb stew meat there for a good price. To others might say it's disorganized and out of array. But I will give it to these guys they really try to put it back into order. The customers are not respectful of things and don't know how to put things back properly and don't think of the people who put things back in order. The butchers are phenomenal and the meat is fresh. You can also get Halal Ramen. Halal potato chips. Afghan bread rice and pasta spices. Pepper paste olive oil's. Halalco has a wide selection of middle eastern products and halal meat. Their prices are also reasonable compared to other stores. The one star is for cleanliness, service and organization. First, their store does not have automatic sliding doors, in my opinion , a must in grocery stores. Second, when you walk in it is chaotic everything is a mess. The vegtebles are mixed with old and some fresh, very unappetizing. The floors and shelves are dirty and there are boxes stacked in various areas in the stores. They also sell some expired products so you need to check the dates. I have returned on one occasion chicken that had a bad smell. Cash registers are also old and outdated. I hope the owners make the necessary improvements to the store before they lose more customers. read more

Ate the lunch buffet here for the first time today with my mom. Overall, I enjoyed my experience. It is certainly a no frills place, but the food was tasty and it was all you can eat! It actually was bit hard to find the restaurant but when you enter walk straight towards the back and you will see it partitioned from the rest of the store by curtains. The man who helped us was very kind and let us stay past the closing to finish our meal. At 8.95$ for the weekday buffet, it's a pretty great deal. read more

I bought "Naan" bread this morning from Halalco and when I opened it later to eat it, I found it disgustingly moldy. I took it immediately back to Halalco and gave it to the man on the cashier. I was expecting him to say "sorry" and give me back my money or ask me to get another one, but instead he turned to me and said, "didn't you see it when you bought it". I was shocked and said what do you mean? He arrogantly said, "did you check it or nor when you bought it?" I told him, No I did not, and it is your job and responsibility to take rotten products off your shelves. At this time, the lady next to us said, yes I wanted to buy this bread and I found it all moldy. The cashier handed me the money and said, "Ok, you have your money back, go now". Halalco, you're incredible! It's a market that is a little tight around corners but they have an endless supply of goods. The meat selection is wonderful, it's a clean halal butcher shop in the back. The selection of pre-packaged meat is outstanding. They have tons of spices, south asian and middle eastern goods. Vegetables, cooking trinkets, bathing supplies, Islamic supplies. You name it, they almost have it all. The staff is very polite, very quick to get you in and out. Nothing is really overpriced either. I find most things are reasonably priced, like you would find in a super market. I will definitely be a returning customer to this location! read more

I went here for the buffet 'experience'. The place had such good reviews and I was so close I tried the lunch choices anyway. The choices were a lamb curry, garbonzo bean dish, lamb feet, rice, and a mixed veggie dish. ALL the dishes were extremely oily with oil floating on top. I didn't mind that as much as some people do but I thought I would mention it. The overall room for dining was not clean but I noticed more and more questionable things the longer I sat there. The food was adequate at best. The lamb 'feet' (that's what we were told) was just grizzle in an oily sauce. The beans were ok as was the curry-- but nothing stellar. I finally left when I realized there were little brown things on the floor (mouse poo i suspect) but when I saw a few of these gems on my table under the napkin dispenser (which was full of finger prints and grime) I got up and walked out. I can't imagine how this place passes health inspections. It seems people like purchasing meat from the deli and other food stuff. But if the 'restaurant' is so filthy I would suspect each area of the market is also as unclean. Tear it down and rebuild a place that is clean. YUK. read more

Awful Customer Service I have been to this store 3 times and I noticed the butchers are so rude to me. I ask them to cut fresh meat for me but they insist that I take from the one already cut in the fridge. I tried the already cut and it has lots of bones and barely any meat. This is a con shop. I was buying Goat meat from here for the last 10 years. For the last one year I have been noticing that when we prepare goat meat it releases 60 percent water and meat pieces shrink by 70%. I bought meat from another place today and it released only 10% water. This guy feeds salt or injects water into goat before freezing them. That inflate weight by 60% and when you deep fry the meat you will realize it released 70% water. Dump this guy ASAP. It is a con shop. read more

In my opinion, this is the best Middle Eastern market in the DMV area. The meat is always fresh and amazing, they have all the spices, snacks, drinks, and anything else you can think of. As a bonus there are books, clothing, and my favorite of all ... THE OILS. I have been coming here with my parents since I was young, and I shop here now as an adult. Love it read more
