We ordered the pickles but returned them as we expected gherkins but they were sliced pickles similar to the ones in hamburgers. I would highly recommend the nuts though! We didn't come with much appetite but the glaze on these made them so addicting. Knocking off two stars from My original review. Went on a Saturday with my wife after hyping this place up to her for years. Saturday at 7 and they were out of lots of their wines and the food was meh+. Like a lot of wines were unavailable . They didn't even have a Pinot noir after I struck out on 3 different wine choices from the menu. Slow service given they weren't very busy. Asked for an extra roll and I get they press it on their electric panini press but when I ordered it a second time bc of how long it was taking boy was this other waitress annoyed as she was working on heating up the roll. Just give me the roll so i can dip in the sauce and feel somewhat full after dropping $150. We seemed to be there between rushes. They weren't even that busy but the service was really slow and the staff seemed to be stressed and not very welcoming. The music too , not that this impacts the food, but the music used to be great here and now it was like Miley Cyrus and Call Me Maybe. It was kind of a confluence of all poor changes. Really let down. Things change. They've become overhyped and complacent. At least it the food could and vibe could have been salvaged by the friendly and non pretentious staff I had experienced 2-3x in the past. Alas, nahh. I wanted to try something unique and hit the bullseye with haley.henry. It's small, which makes it charming and it's not on the main drag, but not too far off at all. Their selection of wines was extensive, and we weren't sure what to order but they did the best thing ever...everything can be ordered as a half bottle! So we felt okay if we didn't really like it. We ended up loving ours which was similar to a pinot noir. The food was excellent. The sliders, deviled eggs, olives, charcuterie, and the tinned fish...all a huge hit. We went with the mackerel in piri piri sauce as they recommended it, and I'm glad we did. I was worried about an anchovy experience and that wasn't it at all. I will be back. I get that it's warm out, but if I'm paying to be somewhere I want to be comfortable and I wasn't. It was so hot to the point that it made us want to leave. The food: great wine selection. Decent prices. We tried a few meats which were very good. I got the mushroom toast and I do not recommend. The sauce on it was weirdly, overly sweet and the bread was very meh. If you've ever been to Nathálie in Fenway, this is their sister restaurant and you definitely get similar vibes and intimacy level between the two. I'd describe Haley.Henry as a bit more raw in terms of it's aesthetic but the layout and everything matched that of the other restaurant. The space itself is super small so I would not recommend going here to more than a party of 2. The food was very very good. Would urge you to try the tinned fish, we had the smoked trout and it was a build-your-own open-faced sandwich thing going on but it was so delicious. My suggestion would be to eat it quickly since the bread is toasted and once sitting out for a little while, it did get a bit chewier. The downside of the experience was with the server and just how hot it got being at the end of the bar with no ventilation or fan. The server wasn't super attentive or good at giving us wine suggestions (which is what I would expect of a wine bar). When he asked him for tips or suggestions on which orange wine to get, he just said "any of them". Then proceeded to say he knew exactly which one we should get and didn't go on to explain the wine or anything. This happened on two occurances as we started with a half bottle of orange and ended with a half bottle of white. Wasn't super impressed with the overall experience even though I would rate the food itself as being wonderful. For the price, was assuming I'd get more from it but no complaints overall. read more

I came here for a post work glass. I originally was going to make a rez but decided to walk in and they had a window bar spot for 2 which was perfect. This is one of the coolest wine bars I've ever visited! I wasn't sure about tinned fish but took their recommendation and had the smoked sea sprat- totally delish. Not super Smokey but with a gravalax type texture. They serve it with chips, salt, butter, fresh dill, lemon and pickled onions- and recommend eating it all on a chip with a bit of everything. I could skip the butter both otherwise it's totally divine. Then i had 2 cheeses and the chicken liver mousse- also delightful. The only negative is I'm from CA and the wines were as big/earthy as I'm used to (typical of everywhere so far in NE) but honestly the wines were still SO good! We had such a great time here! We had a great chat with the staff, and they made great recommendations and had a lot of knowledge about all the menu items. The ambiance is also really cool, perfect for a date night. My favorite out of all the things we got was the lamb tartare: it was so flavorful and tasty, I almost ordered a second! The anchovies were also incredibly delicious- they were not fishy at all, and paired really well with the butter and bread. We then got the pick 3 charcuterie board: prosciutto, pecorino and a soft sheep cheese. This came with a lot more than we had expected, and with a little pairing for each item (mustard, nuts, jam). The dessert was only okay- we got the chcolate trifle, which was a bit too rich and cake-y for my taste. Overall, I'd definitely come back here again! read more

I had a reservation for 9pm on Saturday night with my husband and a friend who was visiting from out of town. We were excited to try haley.henry, as we'd heard great things about it. Unfortunately, our experience quickly took a turn for the worse. When we walked in we had a bit of a wait since one of the hostesses was seating someone, not an issue. We were waiting for a few minutes and a server (later to find out is named Meg) was looking over at our group while she was using the POS system that was directly in front of us. I assume she was inputting an order at this time. As we were waiting for the hostess to get back, my friend needed to use the restroom. As he was walking towards the restroom located across the POS System Meg in what seemed like a panicked matter asked "Do you have a reservation with us?" Confused because 2 people prior to him passed her to use the restroom and weren't questioned, he responded "Yes. my friend did". We were eventually seated outside and told Meg would be our server. During the 10-15 minutes we were seated, Meg attended to the table directly in front of us, the 2 tables behind us, and another table that was near the entrance, but not ours. We understood she needed to check on other tables and take time to speak to the notes of each wine, but not acknowledging us or letting us know she'd be with us shortly felt rude. This lack of attention made us feel disregarded, so we decided to leave. I went inside to inform the host, who was very kind, that we were leaving. He informed Meg, who only replied with, "I'm doing my best," and shrugged. She and I were able to speak for a little bit and she repeated the same thing to me. When I expressed that even prior to sitting down it felt weird she only asked my friend if he had a reservation she didn't seem to think that it was. Overall I'm upset we weren't able to try this place but the remaining staff we interacted with seemed great and the other tables around us seemed to be enjoying their night. Maybe it was just a one-off incident but being what seemed like the only Asian party at the restaurant, being treated the way we did felt a bit off. read more

Very good first experience at Haley.henry wine bar. Simple great bar snacks on the menu. The place is tiny...very limited seating. We waited for 2 seats, had wine while we waited standing. The server (hostess, somolier, server, jack-of-all-trades) took my large and bulky winter coat away to hang out of the way...thank goodness because there is no room for it in a standIng-room-only space. The server was knowledgeable about all natural wines, none of which I recognized as familiar from the limited Whole Foods natural wine section (natural wine = low sulfites = less hangover potential), and knowledgeable about the tinned seafood. As a tinned seafood newbie, I tried the smoked oysters in habenero, the mackerel in peri peri, and the octopus. All was served with chips (literally a small bag of ruffles) for the oysters, and good crusty bread, butter, fresh herbs, and lemon wedges for the mackerel & octopus. All 3 were good, but the oysters were outstanding! Also had the winter citrus salad which was excellent. The only thing that was a tiny drawback was where we sat...along the bar facing out to the street. The view is of the top half of the inside of a Walgreens, with very bright, very offensive to the eyes lighting and the tools of shelves of the interior of the store. It's deeply special yet refreshingly simple, a much needed change of pace, a site for connection--with the friendly barkeep, with the person next to you, with yourself (a great place to go alone if you'd like to). haley.henry is doing the lord's work, serving responsibly sourced, natural, small-production wine and turning under-appreciated foods like tinned fish and deviled eggs into crowd pleasers, with confidence. Have heard great things about HH and reserved for a special birthday outing. It seemed like the Emperor had No Clothes. Tiny cramped venue, lots of energy from all the people. Very few wines by the glass, but our waiter told us they had 30+ open bottles (ok...random choices here) or if we ordered 2 glasses they would open any bottle. Basically you're asking the server for ideas and they bring you tastings. And you're paying $20/glass. We tried a couple sparkling wines and settled- not great. The fave of our server was like an opaque cider. I was looking for a real champagne with complexity but didn't find it. Moved on to a Malbec, and an alternate, a cab franc. Both very tight, young wines and not enjoyable. When you look at the wine menu it seems fascinating but it's challenging to find a pleasing wine- you're not going to ask the server for 6 tastings til you win the lottery. Servers were very attentive and helpful. The appetizers were good but not generous- trout pate with roe was excellent, mushroom toasts interesting but very vinegary. Cheeses were good but again, skimpy, with a tiny bit of jam, some hazelnut butter and lots of bread. The clincher was using the one tiny restroom and finding the seat generously sprayed with urine. A woman-owned and empowered place but gross bathroom, I don't get it. read more

Full disclosure, I am a whiskey drinker, but I like to think I know good booze (and good food, of course). Ended up getting a glass of red wine to drink, and to eat Muva's Prime Rib Slider, and the Lamb Tartare. About the wine: the server was extremely knowledgeable in their offerings, and helped me as best he could to choose something I'd enjoy. I also got to sample some of the offerings from the by the glass section, which was nice before committing. I seem to recall the glass I had was something that resembled a sour beer, a little on the dry side, while being light, somewhat refreshing, and smooth (if that term can be applied to wine). Muva's Prime Rib Slider has meat the consistency of roast beef... I take a bite and in my mind I go "Holy $#**". The roll is small but light and airy, though it's what's on the inside that counts. The prime rib was melt in your mouth, and it was enhanced by the mayo and cranberry sauce (I think) on either side of the bun. They both added an amazing combination of creaminess, acidity, and just the right amount of sweetness. The Lamb Tartare is a little harder to place a grade on. I will give them massive points for making what is essentially raw meat much more approachable. It was served on a piece of toasted bread with some other fresh toppings and a light dressing of oil, I think. Now I do feel as though the other ingredients took a little of the spotlight away from the lamb, and I would have liked a quarter teaspoon less oil. However, this did not make the dish any less delicious, and if I am to play devil's advocate with myself, it makes it more complete overall than a small cylindrical stack of raw meat and dressing. The location is small, quaint, cute, and clean. The service is extremely polite, and considering the size of their kitchen, very fast! I visited here on a rainy Saturday afternoon with a friend from work. It started off great but ended strange, leaving a bad taste. When I walked in, I was immediately enamored with the decor. It is quaint and cute but has fun details like the coffins above the bar of their broken wine openers and the back of the bathroom door as a chalk board for messages. The bartender guided us through what wines we might like based on our preferences and let us try a sip of a few before determining which one we would like a glass of. We decided to get a few small bites and built our own cheese board, got the pickles and the mushroom toast. The cheese board was good but a bit overpriced for what you got, the pickles had a strange flavor profile but the mushroom toast was the best app I have had in a long time. The bartenders were attentive throughout but towards the end it felt like we were being pushed out the door. They asked if they could clear out dishes when we still had some of the apps left on them, we politely declined since we were still chatting, drinking (my friend still had at least half of their wine left) and snacking, and they proceeded to continue to ask multiple times about clearing the plates. They gave us the check while we still had wine and we paid but stayed at the bar to finish the wine we had remaining. Before we left, someone (maybe a manager) with an iPad came over to "just check and make sure that everything had been okay" at which point we said it was and promptly left. The wine glasses made me feel super fancy, as did drinking red wine in general poured from a decanter by bartenders who seriously knew their stuff-- from the regions in France where wines were from to the history of the restaurant. My only complaint are the $$$ prices (the online menu cleverly omits price so I was drawn in by the name, "Bone Thugs & Charcuterie")-- $22 for a plate of 3 mix-and-match cheeses/charcuterie (although charcuterie and cheese boards have to be the biggest markup of all time so I can't say I'm floored by the price). The prime rib slider, $7, was to die for! Seriously, it's a must order: very fresh and unique flavor. A charming wine bar serving a great variety of wines carefully selected from all across the globe along with tasty food. We were visiting Boston and staying near by and decided to pop in for a late afternoon glass of wine after reading all the great online reviews. As it was 4:30 on a winter Friday, we were the only customers for a bit and got a gracious and warm welcome. We took 2 seats at the bar and got some great help from the staff on the wine list. While they only have about six wines by the glass, the REALLY GREAT thing they do is that you can order a half bottle (2+ glasses) of any wine on the menu -which means they will pop open any wine, serve you half and hope to sell the other half later-so unless you are there solo, this is a great option. We got a half bottle of one of the more expensive bottles ($84 for bottle, $42 for half) which was perfect. We also ordered a little cheese (local, organic from New Hampshire) that was a wonderful accompaniment to the bold and flavorful wine. This is a warm and cozy place owned and operated by some really nice ladies who are way into canning their own fruits and vegetables which line the shelves of the small space and find there way into their food in clever ways.
