Stopped by here early morning on my way out of town. About 1/2 the shelves were empty and still being filled so my choices were limited. Blueberry scones were incredible. Donuts were normal, average donuts. Pumpkin loaf was kinda unremarkable. Ok, but on the dry side, I was hoping it would be really moist. Will be back for those scones for sure. read more

We're from out of town and make a special trip just for the cookies because they're that good. The bakery has a great variety of treats, everything we've tried has been delicious, and the shop is always clean and inviting. What was really disappointing was the customer service. The woman working at the front wasn't kind or welcoming in any way. We weren't greeted when we walked in, and she seemed genuinely annoyed that she had to help my family and me. The entire interaction felt rushed and unfriendly, as though we were inconveniencing her simply by being customers. She was also tossing the tip jar around while checking us out, which made the experience feel even more uncomfortable. It's unfortunate because the quality of the bakery is excellent, but friendly service matters too. We love the cookies and will likely be back for them, but I sincerely hope the customer service becomes as enjoyable as the baked goods. read more

Half Moon Bay has a nearly century-old bakery in an idyllic coastal town. Regrettably, on my visits, I've found myself wondering whether the bakery is nearly as interested in baking as I am. Half Moon Bay Bakery has occupied Main Street since 1927. The storefront has the kind of authenticity restaurant designers spend fortunes trying to manufacture. You approach imagining butter, yeast, espresso and warm bread. Instead, I found Doritos. There was Red Bull. And behind the counter, a microwave. Normandy this is not. I've tried the baked goods here repeatedly because I genuinely wanted to like this place. Unfortunately, I've found much of what I've eaten unremarkable. Some items have struck me as designed more for durability than the fleeting perfection one hopes for from a bakery. That's ultimately subjective, of course. Your carbohydrate mileage may vary. What frustrates me isn't that every pastry fails some impossibly precious French standard. It's that this location deserves something extraordinary. A bakery makes one of civilization's loveliest promises: flour, butter, sugar, salt, fermentation, heat, time and skill. When I enter a nearly century-old bakery, I want evidence that somebody woke at an indecent hour because dough required attention. I want bread whose freshness announces itself before I've even ordered it. Instead, the experience has left me supplying much of the romance myself. And that's baffling because Half Moon Bay is practically begging for a magnificent bakery. Cold mornings. Tourists. Surfers. Cyclists. Families wandering Main Street. Visitors coming over the hill. Locals who would happily make a fresh baguette part of their evening routine. Put an exceptional boulangerie here and crowd control might become a matter for City Council. Imagine baguettes emerging throughout the morning. Croissants shattering beside proper cappuccinos. Jambon-beurre wrapped in paper for the beach. Fruit tarts made that morning. Pastéis de nata honoring the Coastside's Portuguese heritage. This isn't asking for molecular gastronomy. I'm asking a bakery to make me excited about baked goods. And that's why I'm so critical of this place: I don't want it to disappear. I want it to be wonderful. A historic bakery isn't merely selling carbohydrates. It has the opportunity to maintain rituals--the Friday loaf, morning coffee, Pumpkin Festival pastry, the cookie somebody remembers twenty years later. Nearly a century on Main Street is genuinely remarkable. But longevity alone doesn't make the food good. History is something an institution inherits. Legacy is something it earns. There is a beautiful old bakery here. I just wish the experience coming across the counter lived up to the extraordinary place surrounding it. read more

IMHO On the day before the big Half Moon Bay Pumpkin Festival, my friend and I managed to slowly drive down Main Street. Everyone it seemed was here to enjoy the town before the crowd converged on the weekend! Miraculously we found parking right in front of Half Moon Bay Bakery!!! I immediately perused the baked loaves and decided on the last Lemon Poppyseed loaf, $7. I also chose a Raspberry Crumble Cookie and a Walnetto Cookie, both $3. Both cookies were "good", but not great. I think they needed a little more butter or sugar for my taste. The Lemon Poppyseed is in the freezer, so I hope it doesn't disappoint. However, I'm sure I won't bypass this bakery the next time I visit. read more

came by bakery about 4:20 pm on Thursday 7-30-26 after enjoying a late lunch at Sam's chowder house, anyways on the way back home to San Jose we me and 3 other family members decide to buy some sweet at HalfMoon Bay bakery, when we arrived there was one customer already paying and getting ready to leave, the young girl behind the counter was in a very bad mood, when we started to order our sweets her fave never changed from being upset we purchased twice different items and every time she grapes the tip can not jar and slam it next to the POS machine, always with a upset look we never gave her reason to be upset at us, I even thanked her for fattening the items and she never responded a thank you, when she handed our box and bag of sweets I told her thank you so much and bye. And we walked out without a word from her. Bad business indeed if she doesn't like what she is doing, she needs to look for something she likes. I'll be back but try the other bakery down the street. Wandered in for some baked goods to take home. The choices are plentiful and it was difficult to make a choice but the nice female behind the counter recommended some items. My friends and I did a 20+ mile walk from the Sea (Redwood City) to the Bay (Half Moon Bay). When we arrived at Half Moon, I was very excited to check out this bakery as bakeries are one of my favorite things. Huge selection of so many goodies. Everything looked great. I love this store for the fresh baked pumpkin loafs. I was there this saturday afternoon. I have to say besides the pumpkin loaf everything lacked flavor. This use to be one of our favorite stops. I ordered the pumpkin loaf and as usual was outstanding. We got an Italian lemon cake and it was so dry and tasteless my wife threw it away. We got 2 melt away (round with powder sugar on it) and they lack a buttery flavor. We got a raspberry cookie and the same thing was it lacked a buttery flavor it should have had. We ordered 1 tuxedo cake slice, 1 eclair, and 1 chocolate cake slice. The chocolate was decent and moist. It seems like anything non chocolate didn't taste very well. Not sure if they are cutting back on some ingredients or going with a cheaper version, but it's starting to taste like it. Next trip to Half Moon bay we are going to try a different bakery. Not sure if they changed ownership but the taste is just not there anymore. read more

I recently visited the Half Moon Bay Bakery to purchase cookies. I have noticed the cost of half moon bay cookies (dipped and chocolate chips) have increased by a $1 each in the past year. Pretty outrageous. We also requested a plastic bag for our purchase. The clerk never mentioned the bag costs $.25. Incidental. But annoying never the less. This is the local bakery and it's located in the heart of the Half Moon Bay. It is run by locals and I enjoyed interacting with them. They have selection of cakes and cookies. And everyone were going for cheese cakes, we got a turtle cheese cake it was yummy. It had caramel, pecan and cheese cake. The staff was super friendly and helped us pick the right cake. We came in after dinner with multiple people each wanting something different. I wasn't expecting much, and it is a standard bakery. I'm not a fan of a $3 cookie, but it is what it is. Everyone enjoyed what they got. My son got a donut, and I was very surprised that it was still a perfect texture that I'd expect for a morning purchase (if that makes sense). Randomly wandered into this establishment after eating a mediocre lunch down the street and was looking for coffee and a sweet treat. Saw they had affogato so I had to get it. This was the prettiest and tastiest affogato I've ever had. The bitterness of the espresso shot mixed with the sweet of the ice cream was perfect. The shot wasn't burned and had no nasty aftertaste just pure deliciousness. Service was great, the co owner brought out the affogato and we learned that the place has been around for about 30 years and that he and his father took it over about 7 years ago. They have a small menu of savory items like wood fire pizza, burgers, salads and sandwiches. Ambiance was interesting as it was a mix between ice cream parlor and pizzeria but held a mom and pop vibe. 10/10 will be back! read more

This is the epitome of the small town bakery. It is right on Main Street. It was jammed, I mean out the door, on Sunday morning at 7:30. There is a reason for that; fresh hot donuts! The counter man was working as fast as he could. The store only holds about 10 people on the customer side of the glass cases. The smell was intoxicating, well it was for me. I am a life long fan of the bakery arts and this place is the temple! The fresh jelly donuts nearly made me faint when they brought a tray out from the back. I asked for a fresh loaf of rye bread but that is special order only. I settled for the fresh sourdough and it is delicious! read more

We stopped into this small, local bakery during our stroll through downtown HMB. It's definitely a hole-in-the-wall, with very limited room inside to accommodate more patrons. They have quite a large selection of both baked sweets and savories to satisfy all cravings, and we wound up leaving with a few pastries in tow. Due to the limited room inside, there is no dine-in option. So simply place your order, and grab & go. Ordered my daughters birthday cake from here on a Friday and picked it up Monday morning. We just got a 10" rainbow cake and had it pre cut. We had it at another party before and my daughter kept requesting this for her bday. It was $85 which wasn't bad as it served 15 people but we cut the slices even smaller since they were little kids. Pre cut saved me time but then I realized I couldn't write hbd on it or really decorate it. It kind of moved around in the car but because it was refrigerated I easily scooted it back together. In the mood for some goodies we were inspired by some good reviews to stop by the Half Moon Bay Bakery. Even though it was mid-morning on a weekday, there was a steady stream of locals coming in - a good sign. We were pleased that they still had a nice variety of wares available. My wife and I selected a few items: two breads, the apple cinnamon and artichoke pesto; an apple fritter, a chocolate old-fashioned donut, a beignet, and a bear claw. Prices were quite reasonable compared to some recent bakeries we have been in. The chocolate old-fashioned donut was delicious, light and fluffy, as was the beignet. My favorite was the Apple Fritter, covered in a sweet glaze it was to die for! The apple cinnamon bread was wonderful, with coffee it made for a perfect motel breakfast. The lady at the counter seemed extremely annoyed that my husband had the audacity to ask for a pastry box that fit the fruit Torte we purchased! The one she provided would not close. Luckily, we parked close and have a cooler in the car, so we were able to store the Fruit Torte safely. The Fruit Torte was delicious. The fruit was fresh, and the custard was not overly sweet.
