Dr McKell is a solo practitioner and I've been going to her for many years She's caring and explains everything she does or suggests as I'm an adult; I've never felt talked down to. She knows her stuff and has referrals if needed. She's a down to earth doctor who doesn't put on airs and she understands what it's like to be a patient. She has helped me through issues with chronic pain when others couldn't or wouldn't and has been very patient with all the side effects I've experienced because of it. I decided to get myself a local doctor for family practice/general stuff since I don't really have one....my insurance doesn't require a PCP and I hate going to the doctor, but every now and then something stupid like strep throat comes around and you need one. I came in over the summer actually because I had had a persistent sore throat and wanted to make sure it wasn't strep. My appointment was with Dr. McKell, a new practitioner who has been added to the office. She is absolutely amazing, I might add. She's got a wonderful bedside manner, is incredibly friendly, and will actually listen to you and make you feel like your input is valued. Nowadays, that's rare in a doctor. I've been in several more times since then and had the same great experience. Dr. McKell is patient, knowledgeable, and helpful. I can't recommend her highly enough. Their new office is located a little ways down Main St (across from Cetrella). The little parking lot off to the side usually has plenty of spaces. The staff is polite and professional, and the waiting room is clean & bright. Reminds me of the down-home doctor offices of my youth. read more

I liked Dr. McKell, but I would never go back. Her office staff is horrible. I was charged for the same charge three times. They made a mistake in scheduling and I could not get clarification, so they charged me a late fee. I paid my co-pay months ago, but I am still getting billed for it. If the office can't schedule appointments correctly and can't accurately do billing, then you should not see the doctor. Horrible experience! read more

If I could give zero stars I would. McKell is a D.O. not an M.D. which would not be such an issue if she didn't try to use ineffective physical/massage techniques instead of actual treatment. She also was very OVER reactive to the Covid 19 situation to the point of paranoia and would expect you to re-use the same mask that she gave you over and over saying you could leave it out in sunlight and sanitize to use for future office visits. My initial review of this excellent doctor was more than two years ago, and after my appointment yesterday I want to provide an update. I've now been seeing Dr. McKell for almost three years. As mentioned in my previous review, I'm dealing with a difficult, complex, painful disease called Ehlers Danlos, and I'm so happy that I have Dr. McKell on my team. Recently I've been having more than the usual medical problems, which for me is saying a lot. Living with a chronic illness can be difficult and this was just "one of those weeks". Dr. McKell could tell right away that I was in pain and not doing well. Here is the important quality that sets Dr. McKell apart from others. She not only listens patiently, but asks relevant questions and is truly committed to helping me stay as healthy as I can. Dr McKell works tirelessly on my behalf, and I'm certain for her other patients as well. She does a great job of using their patient portal, and is usually back to me within a few hours of my reaching out. I don't know about you, but I have a few doctors who sometimes take days and reminders to even call back. Not only did Dr. McKell take action to help me feel better immediately, she helps keep my other doctors informed and even took the time to find me a specialist as I had just been too tired to get it done myself. She cares about her patients physical health, but also understands the mind/body connection and always works to bolster my spirits. Between all the Hippa regulations, paperwork, coordinating, and hoops from insurance providers, a doctors job is no walk in the park. Dr. McKell has shielded me from insurance run-arounds, and is always focused on finding solutions and on me, her patient. We are so lucky to have Doctors of Dr. McKell's calibre here on the coast to take care of us. I have seen / continue to see Dr McKell for weekly treatments to keep pain from chronic back issues and fibromyalgia manageable. Dr McKell provides osteo manipulative therapy which is a specialized treatment that includes intuitive healing and addressing painful areas. I couldn't be happier with the level of care Dr McKell provides! She stays up to date on the latest info and techniques regarding my condition. We are truly partners in my health. Absolutely the best physician in the Bay Area. She is thorough, really listens, explains treatment options, is caring and respectful, and goes out of her way to help you. I had severe sciatica for more than a month and have multiple back issues and I don't know if I could of gotten through it if not for her. She is an expert in osteopathic manipulation therapy (OMT) which made all the difference and which helped me avoid using any opiates for pain. She also taught me gentle exercises that really helped. I made an appointment to see the dr and was told my appointment was at 10:40. Then I received 2 emails stating my appointment was at 11:00. One was an email asking me to confirm my 11:00 appointment. I took the day off of work and drove 30 minutes to get there. I show up at 11:00 on the dot and the receptionist tells me I'm too late. Wait what? She then tells me I'm supposed to get there 15 minutes ahead so my vitals and weight are done and i can be in the room for dr to see me at 11. If they took me now the 10 minutes it would take to do vitals would only allow me 5 minutes with the dr. So the actual time with dr. Is only 15 WTF? There was nothing in the emails that tell you to arrive 15 minutes early. Nothing on the website, no one told me. I've only been there once. I didn't know. They told me it's in the office policy you signed. So we reviewed the policy I signed and it said "arrive 10 minutes before your appointment but if you arrive more than 10 minutes late they won't see you." So no later than 11:10 - I got there at 11. The woman who made the appointment told me I told you 10:45 - and I said, no you said 10:40, BUT the 2 emails said 11. I thought you misspoke. And she actually says - I would believe the person not the email. You mean the email confirmation from YOUR appointment system? Seriously???? Then she tells me I can see the other dr. But not for an hour. I said I can't sit here for an hour - I'm sick and want to go home. So she's says wait a few minutes, then nothing. I go back and she's like no. You won't be seen until the other dr can see you at noon. She refused to put me in the room. I left. It's ridiculous. It's absolutely absurd that they wouldn't let me see the dr. when I clearly was within their own office policy. If they're this ridiculous about the appointments and time - I don't want to know what the care and treatment is for their patients. We're just a 15 minute time-slot for them. read more

Excellent bordering on magic. A good friend had intractable sharp burning pain between the shoulder blades for several months. No relief from meds, massage, heat, ice, stretching, exercise, physical therapy or chiropractic. Unable to sit in a chair or a car for more than 10 minutes without a lot of pain. TWO visits to McKell fixed it, with very specific manual medicine techniques. DOs have tricks in their bag that other docs simply do not. And Dr. McKell is a very skilled DO. I am quite late in writing this review of Dr. McKell at Main Street Medical. I first started seeing Dr. McKell last year when my primary Dr. retired, and I decided that a local doctor would be so much easier and save so much time driving. What a blessing Dr. McKell has turned out to be. I'll save you the boring minutiae of my medical issues, but I have Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, a group of hereditary disorders that affect the connective tissues that support the skin, bones, blood vessels, and many other organs and tissues. Net/Net - this is a rare and complicated disease that requires a doctor who is not only multidisciplinary in approach but one who keeps up on the very latest research. (Of the seven doctors I was seeing at the time I was diagnosed, only three knew of the disease, (other than the diagnostician obviously) and only one was well versed - that doctor was Dr. McKell. Dr. McKell has all of the qualities you want in medical care; knowelegable, patient, attentive, persistent and caring, I've not had a single issue with my care and have been impressed with the lengths Dr. McKell is willing to go to find solutions to my problems. For instance, three years ago I had to have both knees replaced. In the time since, neither I, nor my league of physicians have been able to get the scars to heal, resulting in bloody open wounds (a great look if you can carry it off!) Dr. McKell was able to recommend a treatment that took into affect my disease, allergies, and fragile skin and within a month both knees looked better than they had in years. I'm sure you can imagine that a doctor willing to put so much time into such a small problem truly excels when it comes to handling the big issues. Most importantly, Dr. McKell truly cares about her patients and getting the best possible outcome. Because I can go from "perfectly fine" to "looking like roadkill" in a matter of days, Dr. McKell makes sure that I get in as soon as possible, even if that means staying late. She communicates with my other physicians, and when I need a specialist, not only provides great recommendations, but follows up to be sure I was treated well. The office staff at Main Street Medical is also excellent, as is Dr. Carrington, their family physician who sees my husband and children. The coastside doe not have the necessary population to support more than a handful of local doctors and we are truly blessed to have both Dr. McKell and Carrington as exceptional patient advocates. read more

I realize that in Half Moon Bay, we locals are tempted to visit a physician that is close and conveniently located. I was a patient of the sweet kind hearted Dr. Penrose that retired about 2 years ago, for 20 years. Dr. McKell replaced her and is from out of state. I am a retired nurse. I was forced to retire because of a severe back condition which has left me unable to lift or at times lift my legs to walk up steps. I have known hundreds of doctors and understand how important bedside manner is.This woman gets a Zero where patient compassion is concerned. I have seen her approximately 6-8 times. I kept hoping that my appointments with her would improve however yesterday was the final straw. These are the reasons I recommend you never step foot in the door. 1) Twice she has literally raised her voice and yelled at me for "being late to my appointment." I was completely on time. With a lobby full of patients she raises her voice to say "You were suppose to be here 15 minutes early!" I had a 0830 appointment and I was there at 0825. The very kind man that works at the desk finally jumped in and said "Dr. McKell, she was not told to be here 15 minutes early." She turned on her heels and walked to the back of the office never apologizing. 2) I have literally heard her belittling her own staff in the presence of patients. I have also heard her in adjoining exam rooms giving other patients a hard time about being late or cutting them off when they are trying to explain symptoms. 3) She is condescending and rude when you try and talk to her about why it is that you have come to see her. She does not allow you to finish telling her your health concerns. 4) About 4 months ago I had nausea and that lasted about a week. I had no other symptoms but was concerned that it had gone on as long as it had. She quickly took my temperature and said "there is nothing I can do for you." I brought up another problem I was having and she quickly dismissed it and said "You came in for a stomach ache, if you want to talk about another issue, make another appointment." I was dumbfounded as she had only spent less than 5 minutes with me. You would think a doctor would be open to listening to one more concern. 5) Believe me when I tell you that this woman is all about the mighty dollar! I had routine lab work done after my annual visit. 1 week later the office called me and said that Dr. McKell needed to see me regarding my lab work. Of course I was concerned and very worried for an entire week. Expecting bad news she comes in and proceeds to tell me that my vitamin D level is low. I literally and out loud said, are you kidding? My point here is that she just could not resist collecting my $30 co-payment and then billing my insurance company $185 dollars to tell me something that could have been handled with a simple 3 second call. She makes her patients worry, unnecessarily so that she can fill her schedule. 6) I have been looking for a new Primary Care Physician for about 2 months now and actually called to request my records from her office on Monday. One of the office staff told me that she had been spoken to about her behavior I spoke of and that I would be pleasantly surprised. I decided to give her one more chance yesterday. Being I have such a bad back including a bulging and herniated disc, degenerative disc disease and Spondylolisthesis, I have steroid epidural injections about every 4-5 months by a very experienced anesthesiologist. I had one 10 days ago however this time, the doctor was not able to get into the location the medication needed to be injected into. I saw that doctor on Monday. He rescheduled another epidural for me next week. He knows how bad my back is and made a suggestion about a pain medication that he felt might be helpful. He wrote a prescription for me but I decided not to fill it. I felt that staying close to the coast was more convenient for me as it is an hour and a half round trip to see him. Yesterday when I told her that I had an epidural and that it was not successful she said that it was not true as she had no record from the anesthesiologist. I said, why would I make something like that up? No response. Then I gave her the script that the other doc had written and asked if she could follow me on this new med. She threw the script back at me and said NO! Says I could lose my license. I tried to ask why and she had no good reason other than she was not familiar with the med. I asked if she could look into it as it was not a fire drill. She drones on again about how she could lose her license? Do Not see this woman. She treats you like a second rate citizen. Her behavior is rude to patients and she belittles her own staff whom are clearly on edge as they whisper as soon as she walks away. Stay Away from her. Make the drive over the hill! I recently wrote a review for Main Street Medical, the office in which Dr. McKell practices, and said how much I like this place. I really like Dr. McKell too. She spends time with you, asks the right questions, seems empathetic to your situation, and acts like she cares about you. I was very skeptical at first regarding OMT, as anyone may be with something they don't understand or is new to them. However, after dealing with continuous neck, shoulder and back pain, and all the associated problems that go with it, I figured I'd give OMT a chance. I can't speak for any other physicians results, but Dr. McKell's approach and execution works. After just one treatment I experienced remarkable results. I have never met such a rude doctor. Several members of my family were patients of Dr. Penrose for many years. She was a wonderful doctor with a great bedside manner. After several experiences of my own and witnessing the way that she treated my grandmother, I am done with Dr. McKell and she will not ever treat another member of my family. While I can appreciate a doctor who is attentive to time, keeping to your schedule is not more important than meeting the immediate needs of your patients. I want a doctor who will listen to me and not cut me off every time I try to speak because they are worried about the amount of time that they are spending with me. Saw this DO because it was close to my new home. Scheduled me for holistic healing session for a neck injury. Very unimpressed with a 30 minute $300 visit. She wanted me to come back for 2-3 more treatments, no thanks! I headed to a massage therapist next day who was 1/3 the price and actually helped. Felt rushed and noticed attitude given at the front desk with rolling eyes. New to town but will not return to see this lady. By the way.. She is listed as a surgeon..
