I mean yes the workers can be kinda quiet and quirky but that's the reason they are working in a book store lol try talking to them or ask for help! They are the nicest people there! I only came here to buy, so I cannot comment on selling here, which seems to be the topic of most of the negative reviews. But if you are looking to browse books (or DVDs or music), this was a good experience. The staff were friendly and willing to give recommendations. I have been to most of the HPB in DFW, and I visit four locations on a regular basis. HPB Ridgmar's selection is on the bigger side, enough that the categories get as specific as "quilting" and "Texas football." (In other words, there are a zillion books here). Honestly, it's a bookworm's delight. I found several books and DVDs from my to-read/to-watch lists. The prices were on par with or beat the same items from other HPB locations. This HPB location also ranks toward the top in cleanliness and organization (books kept in alphabetical order and easy to find despite constant client browsing). The children's area is clean and inviting, with stuffed toys to entice kids in. The store also has a few tables and chairs, which I appreciate more the older I get. read more

This took place on Thursday, May 14th, 2026 around 7:45 PM. I have been a customer of this store for more than ten years. During that time, I have consistently chosen to support this location and have recommended it to others. My most recent visit, however, raised concerns significant enough that I no longer feel comfortable returning. I am low‑income and shop exclusively in the clearance section. On this visit, every item I selected was clearly marked clearance. At checkout, the cashier (name on tag: Ivane) isolated one book and stated, "You have the wrong sticker on that." The statement was delivered in a manner that was abrupt and accusatory. Given that all of my other items were clearance, the implication that I would intentionally misrepresent the price of a single book was both illogical and inappropriate. When I asked for the correct price, the item increased to $39.98. I declined the purchase. As I exited, another employee offered a "bye" that was noticeably forced and insincere. The overall atmosphere -- from the register to the door -- conveyed discomfort rather than customer service. I was wearing a visible Star of David. As a Jewish customer, the tone and conduct of the interaction left me feeling singled out and unwelcome. I cannot speak to anyone's intentions, but the experience did not align with the standards of fairness or respect this store publicly promotes. After more than a decade of loyalty, this experience was not only disappointing but concerning. I will not be returning. Given the seriousness of this incident, I am currently evaluating my options for addressing it further. I would prefer to resolve this directly with management before taking additional steps. I am open to being contacted so this matter can be appropriately addressed. read more

I went to sell a book. A very rude white male with glasses didn't even greet me and snatched the book out of my hand. This was 5 years ago and I never returned, and I used to come here weekly prior to this treatment. Some of the staff here are incredibly racist and beyong rude towards Asians like me. read more

Well I was going to donate them anyway But I should have gone to the library where kids and others could enjoy them for free. I really knew better but I have been driving around with these two big boxes of books in the car and needed to empty the car. I had two boxes of nice condition books mostly coffee table photo books on aviation, whales and dolphins. They paid me $6.41 for all of it. Wow! I should have said no but I have a broken leg and it was a huge effort to get them inside from car and I finally emptied the car. Additionally I was going to donate them anyway. At this point I am sorry I didn't get them to the library I would have felt better about myself. $6.41 is really insulting, so much so I will remember it every time I think of going back to 1/2 price books. Im not sure why Im so upset about it because in reality Im 641 pennies ahead but some kid doesn't get to learn about some cool stuff. WARNING! Brought in several first editions of J.R.R Tolkien books- Lord of The Rings, etc. The intent was to sell them. The employee at this location told me that the books were water damaged, and thus they had lost their value. I believed them, and they offered to take them off my hands to be donated. I went back two-days-later, and found my books in a glass case for $249.98 EACH! All seven of my books were in that case! I asked to look at them, to see if they were mine, and sure enough they all had the same initials and damage on the front. Very, very disappointed in a company that says they strive for greater justice. I feel violated. read more

I've been to most of the Half Price Books in the DFW area and this is one of the best locations I've been to. The store has a huge variety of quality inventory - I had to practice self restraint because I found so many books I wanted to buy! Perhaps the most amusing and slightly random thing about this location is they have enough books about Princess Diana to dedicate and entire shelf to her. read more

I read a lot, so I found this book store which is close to me. I found several books to read, so I bought them, read them and decided to go sell them back. WHAT A JOKE THEY ARE ON BUYING BOOKS. I paid over $26 for these books (7 of them), you'll never guess what they offered me. The books were in the same shape and condition that I bought them, no pages bent down, no writing in them. They offered me 28 cents. I told them what a slap in the face that was to know what I paid and they only offered 4 cents a book to buy back. Needless to say I didn't leave the books and I won't be returning to buy from them, I mean Walmart is only a dollar or so more and I can always give them to others to read. I didn't expect full price back on them but at least half of what I paid, I would have turned around and bought more from them. I'll just go get a library card and get them free. read more

I have shopped at HPB for over 50 years. I especially enjoy the big flagship store in Dallas. Lately I've been collecting audiobooks on CD. You can certainly get them cheaper there. Saturday I chose 8 audiobooks. The cashier accepted my cash and handed me the receipt. I asked for a sack because the slick covers make it easy to drop one. The cashier responded in a snotty condescending tone, "We don't use sacks". I then realized HPB had the woke virus. As if mortal mankind really had the power to wreck the planet, or "save" the planet. If Earth needed saving, God could do that. After all, He created it and only He has the power to save it, if it needs saving. So don't go to HPB unless you have a reuseable bag. read more

Don't expect much money for trading in books or records. Sell them online. Not all of their books are half price. If you frequent there stores you will find some bargains. I like happen to like book hunting. There are a lot of recent comic books mostly a dollar each. There is a nice selection of used dvds records etc. read more

Great prices! Employees are plenty and more than willing to help. Having said that, they mainly leave you be to browse and are not pushy in the least. This was my first time in here, and I unknowingly spent a good hour in the cooking section alone. There are also DVDs, Vinyl records, CD's, stationary, and puzzles for sale too here. The quality of everything for sale is practically new and/well kept. I really enjoyed this store and will definitely be back, if not become a regular. read more

Older employees in 40's-50's with tattoo sleeves was very rude and arrogant, he butt in when I was talking to another employee while I was asking a question, and he was trying to sell a used manga box set for 200$ when it sells/retails for less everywhere online, when I just bought a box set at a different half price($87.50) for over 1/2 off retail 20 minutes prior, this guy is a joke and so rude, definitely delusional, he couldn't even understand me speaking. Never had a horrible experience and half price, all the other locations in dfw are always so nice and always do they research on books before they speak! It's called half price books for a reason why would you charge more on used books then buying it brand new haha this guy must have hit a meth pipe before walking into work. We brought in 4 large boxes of books and magazines. One book was autographed. We need a cart to bring in all the books. Some of the magazines were current, and the others were (for the most part) popular topics. What they paid us for them was less than $10. Wow. They paid maybe .05 for each book/magazine and sold them for 10 times that amount. Not many businesses can sell their inventory for a 10X markup. * I'm factoring in that some of those books wouldn't sell, or would be given away. Don't expect all the books to be half price or less. Such is not the case. Some are only discount 10-15% off list price. The store has a decent selection of books, and new titles show up every day. The average business has an employee retention rate of 90%. Though I only visit this story every few months, it's new faces most every time. I've visited other HPB stores and noticed the same thing. Think of the last time you visited Costco. How many smiling employee faces did you recognize? A polo with a HPB logo would be a huge step up for their attire. When a person goes to a Best-Buy, McDonalds or Chick-fil-a they are greeted by a courteous and clean cut person. HPB is like night and day. I'm not sure why they don't allow people to carry concealed handguns in their stores. 1. In this state, to get a license to carry a concealed handgun, one must go through extensive classroom training, pass a written test, show proficiency on the shooting range, have a background check, and get finger printed. These are licensed and trained "good-guys/gals". 2. If a person with concealed carry license tries to enter the store, and sees the official "no concealed handguns allowed" sign, they have to go back to their car, try to hide the gun (hope nobody sees them in the process and steals the gun) and then they can enter the HPB store. What is safer, a loaded gun hidden on a trained person, or a loaded gun in an unattended car? 3. No matter ones feelings about guns, the facts are clear, the number of crimes committed by people with a TX license to carry is almost "0". 4. Many gun crimes are committed in "gun-free" zones, because the bad-guy knows he is less likely to encounter a good-guy with a gun. For these reasons, I feel nervous and unsafe every time I enter a 1/2 Price Book store. I really enjoy the eclectic supply of books, even more eclectic background music, and coffee at the coffee bar, when it's available. I also like that I can search online for books and find a local store that has the book, or have it delivered to a local store. read more

This is a smaller HPB location, but they have a nice selection and a good staff. Trying to add this in by the website, it lists the address as "Sherry Ln", so that's what I put. But I never actually saw a sign that said Sherry Ln anywhere. It's near the new(ish) Target, behind the McDonalds in one of the newer shopping centers. Near Party City. I went in with three books, one of which is 85 years old, another of which is 100 years old. I put them on the buy counter and showed my ID. I started to walk off to browse when I was called back almost immediately. The young man standing at the buy counter turned a few pages in a book, glanced through one other, and didn't even touch the third. He looked almost disgusted as he said they couldn't take my books because of "condition", and that they'd be happy to send them to be recycled! Excuse me? You barely even glanced at my items, made a hasty decision (Because you were up to your ears with other offers - so, clearly, no consideration for my time was given. My offer was beneath HPB, and this is honestly the impression I got.), and, essentially, told me my items were garbage. One book cover is a little faded and the spine a bit worn, but I've seen items in worse shape at HPB! My books are in good shape considering their age. He should have taken into account the age of the items presented before blindly spouting off about condition; the amount of time he spent examining was piteous! I'm incredibly disappointed in the poor customer service, and offended that my books were not given proper consideration. Never ever tell a customer that you'd be happy to send their items to be destroyed; nobody wants to hear that and, frankly, it's bad bedside manner! I'd driven over 30 minutes to see if they had a record I'm looking for and thought I'd try to sell, too. I will never sell to this location again! And after this encounter I certainly wouldn't have purchased said record if they'd had I'd it, even though it's harder to find! read more

The nicest employees of all the HPB's. One of my favorite HPB's. It's a hike for me to get to this location, (it's near my brother and sis in law) but they have tons of titles the other stores usually don't carry or have in stock and lower prices. Have found some serious treasure at this location. Have not sold books at this location. read more

I really liked this location over the one on Hulen. Its clean, fresh, and the staff was not only friendly, but very helpful. I got tremendous value on my trade ins and was able to find many books that had topics that I had been looking for... Scotch! Stop by this location for sure. One of the great things about Texas is that they have Half Price Books. When I first moved here, I was looking for bookstores and I stumbled upon this. Books for half the price? BOOKS FOR A DOLLAR?! WHAT?!! WHO DOES THAT?!?! Half Price does. The staff is great. They have an amazing selection of books from authors even ones that you wouldn't think of. The only author that I still haven't found is Haruki Murakami, but to be honest, I'm not surprised. Also, sometime last year, I believe, they now have free Wi-Fi! It's great because I can scan titles or add books that I want to my Goodreads account in-store without having to take pictures and do it later. Go fall in love. With books. Or people. Buying books in this store is one thing. Getting books from the store bought from you is a whole 'nother ballpark. They completely rip you off. They tell you one thing and then another. For example, I had brought in very expensive artbooks, equaling over a $100, and while I didn't expect to get that at all, as I'm aware they sell the books half their listed price (this is one version I've heard), they literally offered me $12.50. I look at them and say, "you are joking right?" I tell them about the listed price and how it works (I've always heard this story from them) and then they go, "well actually, it's based on how well it says, not it's listed price" which doesn't make any sense since it's "HALF-PRICE" books. Never EVER bring any books to sell there, they will only rip you off. The employee even said, "yeah, it's a pretty low cash-back, I wouldn't take it". This is coming from their own employees! They base the price on how much they sell it for which is ALWAYS half of the listed price but lie to people who try and get a decent deal for expensive books and say, "it's not that, it's this other bullshit excuse we made up to rip you completely off". read more
