I love having a used bookstore nearby. I far prefer browsing in person to shopping online for books. You never know what you're going to find! Prices are great. I regularly take a bag of books to the Buy Counter and turn them into cash. (They offer way more than places like Decluttr and Eagle Saver, which I used to have to use because I lived somewhere without used bookstores.) My husband is not a reader, but even he finds DVDs and games here that he loves. Win for everybody! read more

If I could give no stars, I would.. the buyback guys are wannabe elitist snobs.. RUDE AND DISRESPECTFUL...they JUDGE you by appearance and change your prices based on whoever is back there and in a good mood or not.. they dont care about you...especially if you go to sell...they seem miserable and will make sure you absorb their crappy energy too. I will never sell here again nor support another Half Price again...and you should boycott them too! They think and act like their ish doesn't stink and offering a chump change on rare books and brand new comics I bought and paid full price.. then giving YOU attitude when you act shocked at the low ball amount they want to give you and if you want certain things back because you know their value, they give you more nasty attitude.. take the attitude and shove it and find a better job if you think you can treat people less than because you work at a book store...I could sell or even donate to places that would actually care..they want to give you pennies and then they TRASH what they don't want.. you heard correct.. they do not donate.. they toss your hard earned money in the bin in the back.. because its a corporate wasteful company and what little they do donate is tax deductible and you do not get a write off..this company has sold out years ago..corporate washouts and employees that are never nice. I checked out their clearance.. hardly a clearance section when the cheapest books are $4 now..they are so expensive yet they receive FREE books daily and throw away most of them.. they make three piles..and they bid low prices on what they want to keep personally. Always love these locations. We aren't huge readers, but our intentions fill a small library in our home, and most of our books have come from this business. We've sold some and bought a lot. They have have games, records, CD's, Videoe's and other items as well. We stopped in for the puzzles today and we were not disappointed. They had a LOT, a full shelf system full of puzzles, some still shrink wrapped, others opened but still in the plastic packaging that holds the puzzle pieces, and yet others that others have sold. Prices were awesome even for the unopened puzzles. Always very happy here, staff is always kind and helpful. read more

I really enjoy Half Price Books. I have bought and sold books here, so let me speak to both aspects. Each time I've sold books here, the wait is not very long. Only on one occasion did I have to wait an hour and that was because it was a busy weekend and multiple people had come in with more than 30 books. I get a fair price for the books they accept. I usually research online before I go into the store so I can know what "fair" is. They also accept books that an online book buyer may not take. The workers who give me the offer have never been rude and despite always being busy when I'm there, are in a pleasant mood. I bring in some books that I no longer want, and then I get a fair cash payment for them. Wahoo! Buying books at Half Price Books is pretty darn easy. If I am looking for a specific book, I will usually call ahead to ask. If they do not have it, they check surrounding stores that have it in stock and inform me of their address. If the book is available for store to store shipping, they set that up for me and call me when it's available. A very easy process! Most of the time, their prices are a little higher than online, but the benefit is knowing the exact condition of the book and the immediacy of the transaction. This past week though they had an awesome sale. A couple of days were 30% off your highest price book and it gradually increased until Sunday, which was 50% off! Pay attention to sales and get an even better deal on books that you want. Overall, Half Price Books is a solid place to buy or sell lightly used or new books. Customer service is everything I could ask for. Only reason why I am not giving 5 stars is because most of their regular priced items are higher than online book sellers. read more

I've never sold books here, I've only bought them! I love a good Half Price Books and have for as long as I can remember. No matter the location it always feels like home here, it's cozy. This HPB is nice and clean and quiet. I can spend forever browsing books, movies, and journals. I might not always leave with a new book but I ALWAYS end up buying a new journal that I think I'm going to do something special with. The prices here have remained pretty low, and I usually find something I didn't know I needed. The staff here is friendly, although I felt like the wait at the register was a little too long. Half Price Books is my happy place. I could spend hours here. Today, I was searching for one specific book, and decided to ask for help instead of wandering aimlessly. The employee asked me for the title and found me the one and only copy in only a few minutes time. It was priced $3 below what it is posted on Amazon. Score! Rude and disrespectful! Offered less than 50 cents per Blu-Ray I brought in, despite they will be selling at what looks like about $5-$7 each given the prices for the same titles on their own shelves! And they were very rude when I asked if they meant for a limited number of the title brought in, and they said, nope, for the entire pile! 30 hit movies and $5 & small change was their offer! The associate that I asked for help didn't seem like she enjoys her job and was inconvenient for her to provide assistance to me. I was browsing their cooking and health sections. Most Half price books have some of the authors I usually look for, but this one has none. That's ok though, just look for another store until you find your favorite one. read more

I think I have found one of my new favorite stores! The place was clean, well organized, and true to their word... every book was half off of the original price! The books they sold were all reasonably well-taken care of, which is something I'm a stickler for. They even have older text books! We love Half Price Books, and this location is our favorite. If you're looking for big comfy chairs where you can lounge and drink your latte for a few hours before leaving to buy your books from Amazon, you need to head to the closest Barnes & Noble, which are going out of business because of too many people doing just that. At Half Price Books, the deals are excellent, the variety unbeatable and a diversity of music, movies and books with an excellent children's section and a continually changing clearance department. You can even get current magazines for a buck each. Not sure about some of the complaints about the staff, because I've found the folks here to be great. Man, if you dropped me into this store without telling me where I was I'd swear this was the Irving location (they look pretty alike from the inside). It's really hard to review a one Half Price Book store over another since some of the content changes from one store to another and the kind of content they have can be subjective. But, what I'll say is that I really enjoy browsing this and other Half Price books when I can (usually for CDs). The store is maintained well, service is typical, and you'll be able to get your hands on over 20 copies of the same Better Then Ezra album (LOL). My only minor complaint about Half Price Books is the strange new products they offer. I don't know if you've noticed this stuff too, but they all offer these poor production quality CDs, DVDs, and various other items on different subject matter. You can tell because it's nothing you've seen anywhere else, and they will have a ton of the same stuff (plus it's usually shrink wrapped). I glance right over these products, and I have a hard time believing that they're moving this product out the door (since, like I said, they have a ton of it). People may find it hard to believe, but after stopping in at Half Price Books, but I'm actually excited about a book store! Clearly not your everyday book store. This is almost like a movie trader or a pawn shop for books, movies, vinyl records, video games, computer software, and more... but mostly books. The store is broken up into traditional sections based on genre and then into styles or content. The biggest thing though is that the books actually are HALF PRICE! I have no idea how they manage it, but I'm nearly pissed at the money I have spent on other books in the past at big chain retailers when i found the same exact books here for 50% less. And it was every single book at one half the cover price! Again, no idea how they do it but I'm okay with it. There was a section for first editions in case there are collectors out there (noticed a Bible printed in 1840). Other sections, as already mentioned, include video games and computer software, CDs, DVDs, and TV series, and even vinyl records. If you have old books, movies, and the above listed, they offer a cash/store credit option to trade in or sell your goods to them for resale. All that while you peruse the shelves. My favorite book store chain since I was very young, searching through one of the original stores on mockingbird lane. This location, which used to be across the street, now resides in the old Sound Warehouse address. As with most hpb locations, the staff is friendly and knowledgeable. The store is clean, well organized and inviting. Their selection is slightly better than others (locations closer to colleges tend to get more interesting things). We went in the Saturday after Christmas. HPB was rocking an extra 20% off your total purchase deal that we looked to take advantage of... us and about a gazillion other bookworms. That place was packed. To the employees credit, the books themselves were really organized and the aisles were clear. The hazard came when it was time to check out. The registers framed a square shape and there was just not enough room for all the people standing in line. It ended up being awkward with people "cutting" in front of each other and cashiers waving their arms from the other side of the square 'I can take next in line!' And then four people try to be next in line. The good prices and well stocked stacks made it worth a trip, but it kinda stinks that the chaotic check out is the last memory. read more

I've been a fan of Half Price Books for years as it provides a fantastic selection of gently used books at great prices. I wish the store was more centrally located, instead of past I-20--us urban folk need affordable books too! You won't find every book on your wish list, and the selection of new books is extremely small, but you're almost always bound to find bestsellers from the last 15 years in stock since so many people buy them and sell them in the first place. The best part is that many of the bestsellers are usually hidden in the clearance center in the back, marked down to just $1 or $2. This particular location doesn't have a database of books in stock, so you're pretty much on your own in finding a book, but the staff are helpful and friendly and will do what they can to assist you! Also, Teachers can get books for their classroom for free with a principal's note/request on school letterhead (I used to teach in Houston and received 6 boxes of young adult books! It was awesome). I haven't confirmed that the Hulen location does this, but I believe this is a company policy so if you're an educator wanting to stock your classroom library you should investigate. read more

Good location! I agree with another reviewer who stated that is hard to judge on HPB location over another because their inventory changes so rapidly. What I can tell you is that this store, compared to the other locations, is medium sized, clean, well-organized and has a great selection. The staff was friendly, and check out was a breeze. Their selection of used records, and children's book was a bit lacking, but overall the store is a great place to buy used books on the cheap. One more tip: Get on the HPB e-mail mailing list. They routinely send coupons including the occasional "50% off of a single item" coupon which is a great excuse to buy that 1st edition in the display case you've had your eye on. read more

As a voracious reader, I am hesitant to pay full price, or even B&N's discounted prices, for a brand new book that I'll finish in three days and put up on a shelf. Enter Half Price Books... Obviously not meant to compete with B&N, or Border's, but targeting cost conscious readers and listeners, HPB lets you find everything from the latest releases to obscure classics to reference books for a fraction of the price. Not only are you saving money, but you're giving these books a second lease on life. The next time you're on south Hulen, check this place out. Really one of the coolest places ever. As long as you know they are not going to give you much of anything if you are trading in you will be ok. My favorite sections are the military history and computer section. Books on WW2 and Adobe products aplenty! Go and take the time to explore. read more

I love all Half Price Books, but over all this location is a bit smaller than most. The staff are all really nice and helpful. They have a wide selection of books, music and movies but that's all half price books. So that's not really saying much. One problem I do have with this location is they never have coffee or tea. And remember they will buy old magazine. If they can't give you money they'll recycled them for you. read more

Very good place for cheap books. There was a specific book I was looking for and had gone to Barnes and noble where the book was about $16. I couldn't afford it so I went to half priced books and found it for $8 and was able to get 2 other books with it. Only downside is I sold a book to them and got like $3.50 lol oh well. read more

Good selection. Absolutely terrible service. Rude and unpleasant. My dad is possibly their best customer and is a regular. Many times he has asked for items to be held for him and they offer him very little flexibility on when to come by. It has been extremely frustrating dealing with them. Unusually bad attitude as far as half price books is concerned. Unpleasantly surprised with the unhelpful service here versus at other locations. Will not be frequenting the Hulen location.
