I sold 2 boxes of good books to this chain. One set of books on TCP/IP alone costs over $200 on Amazon. Most of the other books were also high quality in-demand books. Many 100's of dollars. HORRIBLE experience!! My husband and I brought in some of our old books and a text book so about 15 books in total. The textbook was $70-$80 when I bought it and I was thinking I would be able to get at least maybe $25 for that book alone. And maybe another $20 for the rest of the lot. NOPE. I was a regular at this store for over 10 years. I would shop there like every other weekend. Buying CDs, DVDs, comics and collectible hardcover books. However recently it doesn't feel as welcoming anymore, most of the regular employees don't seem to work there anymore. I also couldn't help but notice they welcome in certain ppl, but not othersI happen to be part of others. I got no welcome in again ..so I can't believe it's not deliberate. I was a Half Price Books addict for years, both in Texas (LOVED the flagship store on Northwest Highway... went almost daily and stayed for hours) and in my current home of Washington State. My best friend took me to this location when I ran out of stuff to read and I really liked this store. It was very clean neat and organized, and I love that the buying counter was on the front instead of way in the back like most stores I've been to. I almost left without buying anything but at the last minute ended up buying three books from the Little House On The Prairie series and a really cute Van Gogh bookmark. Total for all of that was only around $17. Such a bargain! The associate who helped us was very friendly and knowledgeable. Unfortunately I won't be able to visit this store again before I fly home to Washington but I hope to come again on my next trip. read more

Last month we did a lot of clearing out of books, cassette tapes, DVD's and VHS tapes that we had accumulated over a period of about 30 years! I went to three different Half Price Books locations with three different huge loads of books! I was pleased with the process of selling my good old books etc. The main location on Northwest Highway in Dallas is awesome! Great coffee shop to enjoy a beverage while waiting for a quote and the store is huge if you're a book lover it's a great place to visit and find your next read or listen! read more

Well that was embarrassing. I'm moving soon so I decided it was a great time to downsize my bookcase to make room for future books. So I carried in like a thousand books (exaggerating by a lot) in blazing Texas summer heat (not exaggerating at all) to be offered $1.00. Most disrespectful human beings who should not be in a service related field. Let me first start by saying my wife is very pregnant, and while I don't feel this should necessarily warrant special attention, it does make this whole thing all the more ridiculous. 1:15pm We show up with a huge box of books. It's just heavy enough where I am struggling with it, but still light enough that it's still reasonable I could carry it up to the sidewalk so my wife could get a cart. As I struggle to carry it, my back spasms and I just about drop the books. The whole time, the half price books guy is watching us from just inside the door. My pregnant wife hurries to get the cart and I struggle to get the books on top without completely throwing my back out. At this point when we go to push the cart inside, the hpb worker finally decided to end his silence and say, we actually don't do buybacks until 2pm and pointed to a sign. Yes, we should have seen the sign - but did you really have to wait and watch us struggle before coming out to tell us that? Ugh, fine - I say, ok, since we got them up here, can I leave them inside until 2pm? I figure that's 45 min - we'll grab food - nbd. Of course we can't do this. I ask if we can wait inside the store with the books - can't do that either. Even though the store is open... Fine. At least he let us roll the cart back to the car. We'll get food first. 1:58pm We pull up to half price books after our meal, we get a cart, I put the box of books on, and I push the cart to the desk at 1:59pm. The guy takes our name and phone number and says stick around the store. I ask how long and he says, "well, there are quite a few people in front of you - maybe 45 min to an hour?" How the h*** is anyone in front of me when you turned us away 45 min ago because you refused to take books until 2pm and it's friggin' 1:59pm so there shouldn't be ANYBODY IN FRONT OF ME! And then you have the nerve to tell my pregnant wife that she can't leave your store in that 45 min period, in which you have NO CHAIRS FOR A PREGNANT PERSON TO SIT?! Nice jobs half price books, nice job. read more

This is a great HPB location. The first thing I noticed - the staff really like one another. They were attending to the customers, but conversing among one another as well. It made for a lively atmosphere. I was there on a Saturday about 12:30. It was pretty busy. I was hoping to check out the Sociology section for some Social Work Theory books to add to my collection, but that carve out had 3 unrelated adults and 2 strollers. The remainder of the well laid out store was less busy. I came in with a list from Esquire listing the 15 top short story collections. Some were from 2017, another was much older (40 years older, I believe). Of the 15 I was able to find 4, and of the remaining 11 I was able to find multiple other works for 5 of those authors. The 2017 listing wasn't as easy to find, but I expected that. I just realized that I forgot to check the DVD section for the Tales From The Crypt series.... The taste of defeat. The selection of new releases was great, but not overwhelming. I saw a few that I may pick up when I go back. There were a couple of tables and some chairs. It was not as many as Northwest Hwy in Dallas (of course) or Hurst, but still enough. The cashiers were great, and I got a good deal. I let them put my email address in the system and got 40% off of my highest priced item. I left with some great books. Now I just need to go back for that DVD set! read more

I've been meaning to check this location out for some time, but am always on my way somewhere when I drive by. Bookstores call to me like a siren, so I'm glad I finally made it in. I actually stopped by to sell some books because we're trying to clear out the clutter, but more on that later. It also doesn't hurt that HPB is more in line with my book budget than Barnes and Noble. This location is very conveniently located. It's off 3040/Flower Mound Rd between MacArthur and Rockbrook, so there are lights on both sides. This makes entering/exiting easy and safe and you can quickly get back on the road east or westbound, regardless of traffic. The strip mall is huge, with plenty of parking and other shopping and dining options nearby. There is a ramp in front of the door for handicap accessibility and using their flat carts they let you take to load up at your car. It would be even better if they had automatic doors. This location is a medium sized Half Price Books, I've been in smaller and larger locations. They had a really good selection of books with smaller selections of DVDs, CDs, records, stationary, games, etc. This location is well lit, well organized and the aisles are a good size for plopping down on the floor and reading- book lovers know what I'm talking about. The signs are clear, the areas are well maintained and the displays are spic and span. The only area I saw with even a little clutter was the hallway where the restrooms were- stacks of boxes of books that hadn't been opened yet, but they were stacked neatly and this speaks to their selection. Lots of eye candy here and a nice, calm atmosphere. The aisles being extra wide make it easy for the small shopping carts they have at the front (in case a basket is too small for your goal:)) to maneuver around anyone absorbed in their book. The books were in very good condition, many looked new, very few had the tell tale break in the spine. I was trying to unload books, not deal with the accusatory looks from my husband and dogs when I come home with more, lol, so I was just planning on browsing and determining if this was a good spot to come back to. I browsed around for 6 or 7 authors, and though they may be missing a book or two in a series, they had almost everything for some authors and definitely had everything by others (Grisham fans can rejoice). I even came across new work I hadn't been aware of. Subject matter sections seemed to have a lot of variety from what I saw but I spent most of my time in literary fiction and mystery/thriller. They carry a lot of hardcover books compared to some of the other locations, but plenty of paperbacks. It's priced as expected but I did come across quite a few that were several dollars cheaper still. Some were in line or cheaper than kindle prices and I'm very tactile so I prefer having a book in my hand, especially when I'm relaxing or on vacation- it's easier on my eyes too and allows me to read longer than a screen does. Outside they had about 8 book shelves marked clearance $7 and under. These included a lot of popular titles and stuff I know was going for $28, yet most of the hardcover books I sorted through were $3-4 and I discovered some stuff on the cheap from an author I had heard of, but hadn't read before. A great clearance section is such a wonderful thing. Just felt a little weird looking through them outside. It's almost like I was hyperaware of making sure no one thought I was stealing! If you are going to sell, please do not expect a lot of money. They sell books half price or even less, and they have a business to run. Hardcovers in good condition are your best bet, but even then a box of those may just get you lunch. The great thing about selling here is they take everything off your hands and donate anything they can't sell. Maybe it would be more satisfactory to donate to your public library yourself, but on the upside you can put whatever you make as a credit to your purchase or get a cheap lunch. I brought in almost 4 boxes of books and barely made it in the double digits, but more than half were paperbacks (donated because they were well read) and my purpose was to declutter my house (I have four times as many books as I do shelf space... I have a problem) and not have to make separate trips for the items that were too used to sell. For me, this was an ideal option, but if you are hoping to get a lot of cash, I hope I have given you a fair expectation. They gave me a ticket that I gave to the cashier and after my new purchase (shhh), they gave me the remainder in cash. I found every member of the staff I spoke to friendly and helpful.This is a great place, I could easily spend a day here and lose track of time! I wish I had done more browsing and can't wait to come back and make some more purchases... just don't tell anyone at my house. :) read more

DO NOT SELL ANYTHING HERE!!!!! They WILL rip you off. I brought a brand new AP Chemistry Test Prep Book, originally bought for $20, and approximately 24 other children/teen genre books. All books were in great conditions and were handled with care. The price I received in return: $5.80 They put all the children's books on clearance and would not tell me how much each book sold for. Very suspicious and inconsiderate. I do not recommend selling anything to Half Price Books for ANY reason. read more

I could get lost in this small store for hours. The NW Highway has always been my favorite bookstore. But, since moving to Denton, I do my shopping and browsing in Lewisville. The selection of clearance books was amazing the other day. I walked out with 15 books for $19. Buying them for more than that makes no sense. I donate them to a nearby thrift store for others to enjoy. read more

My boyfriend and I went in to sell his books and as soon as we walked in, an employee looked at our basket of books and said that they don't do BuyBack on Thursday's. We thought that was kind of weird but we said "okay our bad," and walked out. As soon as we did we looked at their hours because we were sure they did buy back every day. Sure enough the sign on their window says "Buy Back hours 12pm-7pm all day, every day." (It is 2:42) Very disappointed will not be coming back. read more

Nice selection and very good customer service

This location has a decent selection of books, and the employees are usually pretty nice. The biggest downside to this location (as opposed to some other 1/2 Price Books) is that they never tell you if they have anything in stock if you call ahead of time. Every other store I've gone to will check on the availability of a book for me (either in a computer system or physically go check)... but this one just says, "Oh well we don't keep an inventory, so we can't check." So this location is hit or miss. I had a good hit here last month. I figured for sure they wouldn't have a UK edition of the book I was looking for, but they did! I hadn't found it at any other 1/2 Price, and stopped in here on a whim (as I knew calling wouldn't do any good). Voila! There it was! Like I said, hit or miss. Cook book selection is good, good records/CD collections, decent fiction selection. Just don't try to call ahead of time to see if something's in stock. read more

I brought a bag of books in for purchase and they only bought maybe 1 book and offered me $1.90. I was very surprised by this and they offered to keep the rest of the bag of books. I asked what they would do with them and they stated they would either be recycled or donated. Ok, so I took them back and I'll try another location. Also surprised by their inventory for purchase. They have a lot of kids book options, but all books looked new and I could have went somewhere else to buy new books closer to home. read more

I came here for the first time last week looking for a specific book, and I was a little confused by the layout. But that could be because I was looking for a book on dance, and it ended up being on the complete opposite side from the sports section. I could've saved time, if I could've easily spotted an employee other than the busy cashiers. I love this store. Been coming here for years to hunt for CDs, DVDs, and books. Sometimes I don't know where to look for something, but the staff are always super helpful and nice. I love their clearance CD section - huge, super cheap (like $2), and fun to hunt through. Even if a CD has 2-3 good tracks, you did good for $2. :) Excellent selection of kids' books. Good place to bring old books, CDs, or DVDs and get a little store credit or cash for. Also a good place to hunt for odds and ends, like thank-you notes or calendars. And they special order or transfer stuff all the time if they don't have what you're looking for. Only other comment: not everything here is bargain bin stuff. They do price according to the market and supply and demand. If a kids' movie is super popular and a hot seller, that DVD cost might reflect it. Also, to be clear, they have Bluray and DVD (plenty of Bluray), so I'm using the term DVD generically. read more

This is my first stop for books. They have a huge selection and most times a specific book that I'm looking for. It's sometimes hard to find things, but the staff is always very friendly and eager to help. They have great prices, which is the main reason that I go there. The kids section is huge. My kids always find numerous books that they want to take home. The food, health, and sports sections are also large which is where I spend most of my time. Tons of fiction books too. It's always clean inside and well kept up. I love this place and usually spend an hour looking at different things. read more

The process of selling books here or at any of their other locations is somewhat mysterious. One can never be certain that when one comes in to sell something that what is purchased by them is offered a fair value, nor is one guaranteed that when an offer is refused and you want unsold books back that they will be returned to you. I have sold many old books here over the past year and, most recently, sold five old volumes for a whopping $2.13. When I took back what was not purchased, some of the books I came in with were not returned and no explanation or apology offered. This may have been an oversight. You will receive pennies on the dollar and the payback rate seems to be decreasing each time I return, which is a deterrent for me selling anything here. What you are really doing is probably wasting your time and gasoline trying to clean out your shelves and basically giving your books away for the price of a gallon of fuel. It might be better to donate them to a local library or charity to make the act more meaningful. While your take from selling here may be better than mine (I tend to sell less than popular items), I wouldn't expect to get a lot of cash selling books here. You won't. read more

Half Priced Books is my happy place. I could spend hours there picking through the stacks, buy 20 books and barely spend $40 bucks. I love it. This particular location has a GREAT cookbook section as well as a great variety of movies and records. This ones fiction section doesn't seem to have as much turnover as the Preston location- but great nonetheless! read more

I went to the Lewisville location yesterday & took in 4 boxes of hardback books in perfect condition. They only bought one box from me. I took the remaining 3 boxes to the Frisco location & they bought everything!! They were shocked the Lewisville location didn't want the books. I also located a book to purchase. When I had the Lewisville location look up the title the day before they said none of the locations in the metroplex had that book, but Frisco had multiple copies in stock today. read more

My mother told me for years I need to go to half price books & man I should've listened a long time ago. I love love love to read & sometimes it's sooooo expensive to buy books. It's paper that's typed on for crying out loud. I went here recently with my daughter just looking for a couple books for us to delve into & I swear I walked out with a couple BAGS of books for less than $50. We got look & finds, flap up books for my toddler, some chapter books for my 10 year old, & a couple of series' that were recommended to me but so pricey I never thought of buying them.
