Went in to sell a bunch of books and records today, and left with more than I sold. I'll take it as a win! I don't know if book/music people are just the most interesting and unique people around or if HPB just finds this amazing crew - but such a great staff from the buy counter to the check out lane. Love spending time here with my teen flipping through vinyl and finding the best obscure books. Haul today: Vinyl: patsy cline, Belinda Carlisle, and the doors Books: space and mythology tomes for my teen We won't talk about my vinyl bill, but it was definitely better than retail! Half _rice Books is a great place to browse when you have a general interest in mind but not as much as when you're looking for a specfic book. They have a great selection and great variety of books but finding a specific book is a bit more challenging than browsing and seeing what catches your eye. Overall, their prices on used books is pretty good. They advistise that they also "BUY" used books but I would urge caution when trying to sell books to them. They offer pennies on the dollar and the last time I took a batch of about 25 books in and got an offer of less than a dollar, I swore I'd donate the books to Goodwill or Friends of the Library rather than hauling them in here and being offered next to nothing. Summary - a great place to find good, used books priced pretty inexpensive. Bad place to try and sell used books. read more

I absolutely LOVE half price books! Their selection is usually pretty robust and typically will have what you are looking for. If they don't have it in stock then they can more than likely have it shipped from another store for free or a small fee. Mainly, I go for the board games and video games, but I have purchased plenty of books as well. The only reason I give a 4/5 is that selling things to them is typically not worth it. You may get $10 for your 25 books, but unless you ask about each item, you would never know that they just gave you $9 for one book, and less than 10 cents for each other item. I'm a big fan of Half Price Books. I prefer hardcovers, but I like to buy them at soft cover prices. They may not always have the specific book you're looking for (I'm trying to complete my Jack Reacher series), but you'll surely find something of interest. The only downside? I really like this location of Half Price. Pretty much whenever we are in Springhurst, we make a stop in here. This location has a bit more space to it and is easier to maneuver around. What I like most is that it's very easy to tell where everything is. You've got games to the right, movies to the left, and books in the back. Another thing to note is that this is the only location where I've noticed that they have a labeled clearance section for movies. I love Half Price books! I remember when they first constructed this shopping center and the Starbucks drive thru over there wasn't even in existence. It's gotten busier and busier now. Sometimes finding a parking spot can get tricky. They share with other businesses and the lot fills up quickly! I love coming here to find classics, recipe books, and DVDs of old shows, especially Dawson's Creek. I found seasons 4 and 6! It wasn't super busy when I came in early afternoon on a Friday. There were a good handful of people in there. They were having a 20% off sale of stuff just outside the door. The guy told me that they do sales throughout the year and that there's an annual sale they do late September at the Expo. Very cool! There wasn't a line so I went straight up to the counter. The service here is always great. They're really nice and seem to enjoy making conversation! I've sold books and magazines here before. It's also an easy process. My wife and I love Half Price Books, and it's a frequent stop when we're in the area. The reasons we visit, however, are different. My wife usually has a certain book or author in mind. Me? I head straight for the Vinyl and start perusing the albums. The 45s not so much because 98% of them have no sleeve and are in a pile, but the 12' vinyl is what I take my time going through. I've found some pretty awesome selections, but you wade through a lot of mediocrity in the process....and I touched WAY too much Midler for my taste one day. I think it might be the largest HPB in Louisville (but don't quote me on that). One of the things I like best about Half Price books is the amazing variety of merchandise. It's not just books. It's *Books *Books *More Books *Comic Books *Books on Tape *Books on CD *Music on CD *Music on Vinyl *Movies on DVD *Television on DVD *Entertainment related toys collectibles *Some electronics *Video Games *Books *Books Seriously, if it's media-related, chances are they have it here. I have yet to run across a staff member who isn't knowledgeable about where anything is, or what they have in stock. They have a book buy-back program where you can take your old books in and they'll give you store credit for them. Don't expect that to add up to much unless you bring a shit ton of books, however, as they're pretty stingy with the in-store credit thing. They also have a loyalty club that is a "spend $20 and get a stamp on your card" thing, but that's only one stamp per visit on purchases over $20. Because of a distasteful misunderstanding and rude incident between myself and a former employee - who embarrassed me in public over a small matter and my response to that humiliation - at the Hurstbourne store five years past, it seems that I am no longer welcomed at either stores in Louisville. Which is most odd, considering the fact that what happened at Hurstbourne had absolutely nothing to do with my business relations with the Westport store. Especially after a friend of mine who worked at Westport was fired from there last year. Until today, I had good relations with the staff at Westport. They were always helpful and polite. But after hearing this disturbing news today, I can now honestly say that the staff at BOTH Louisville stores are people who would fall under the categories of rude, unprofessional, and disrespectful. Especially in their treatment of a now former loyal customer who has autism. Honestly, what happened five years past at a different store SHOULD NOT have any relevance with a different store today. Apparently, and this is what I was told by the store manager(someone that I thought was very helpful), after some issues they have had over the past year with the public, their management has decided that if one person is no longer welcomed in one of their stores, then that former customer is no longer welcomed in ANY of their stores nationwide. SMH. I've heard of a store's right to refuse service, but this is really giving a new meaning to it! After this unpleasant experience, I WILL NOT EVER step into ANY Half-Price again!!! NEVER EVER!!! Half priced books is a great way to find almost any type of media. The workers are nice and are very willing to help. The only reason I give a 4/5 is because if you're looking to get some money from your books, board games, etc. you might want to look elsewhere, you wont get much money for a lot of books there. read more

Great place to purchase old games, movies, or books. I enjoy three things about this location. The atmosphere, the staff, and their products in general! I have been going to this locations since they opened up and they relatively have everything I'm looking for. They even sell Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh,and magic cards! The atmosphere and their general organization is great! Everyone is smiling and there are decorations everywhere in the building! I enjoy the posters and family friendly environment! Everything is organized. They have a book , movie, video game, board game, comic, and card section. They are in alphabetical order which is a plus! The staff is great! They answer your questions with great responses. When you sell them your old products they are honest about the quality and the price they offer you. They don't take advantage of you! I have heard people try to argue with employees about their old book being worth more. Some people are hard to please and they respond to them professionally. (Note to difficult customers : not everything you sell is worth a lot of money) I love their products! The movies are well priced. The retro video games are locked up which is great. They have NES, SNES, N64, gamecube, Wii, Wii U, playstation 1, 2, 3, 4, and all the xbox games you can imagine! They have guide books too! Even retro ones from the 80s. They sell consoles behind the counter. They sell cards near the checkout counter! They have comic books which range from old to new! The board games are great too! This is my favorite book store in town. I usually come here every weekend to get some comics or magazines. They have tons of comics on clearance and magazines for 50 cents and great deals on books whether it's hardback or paperback. I like that HPB is categorized very well granted you may have to do a little digging but the deals are so worth it. The staff is very helpful here. They assist me right away. HPB will also buy your books, TV shows, DVDs, CDs, vinyls etc. pretty much anything they sell they will buy. So if you got old books or any of these laying around home that you don't need stop by HPB and get some cash or in store credit. Not to mention special sales like holidays around the year. read more

Today I went in to look in my favorite section the African American fiction section just to find out that they got rid of it . The lady said "they are just in with all the regular fiction books now". It will be w/ less frequency after walking in w/ 4 cartons of books- (half of which were current sellers other half history) and walking out w/ a mere $35! When I politely inquired why the prices were so low- that ordinarily I'd be offered in the 50-70 range .. I was told "glut/ market flooded!" Previously I was told the offers were based on % after checking ISBN - a fairer measure than " market trends" To his credit, the clerk admitted their refusal rates have risen 20% cuz regular customers are insulted by their offers! They won't need to insult this former customer again any time soon! read more

I needed something to read with him over the weekend since we were just about finished with The Little Prince. I went in with the intention of buying him one book and one for me.Well, two books for him;two for us both;two for me;and a Creature Comforts DVD later we were on our way home.Most expensive book was a hardbound copy for $9.98. Staff was helpful and friendly.It could be easy to get lost perusing the aisles for hours.I had to pull myself away from the CDs.We will be back. read more

I'm going to preface this by saying I'm a total nerd but I LOVE this store. I've been a few times before and I always end up staying and browsing for much longer than I anticipate. Went in this time to look for one thing and stayed over an hour. They have such an array of new and used books, along with used movies/tv shows/music. With people constantly buying and selling books here what is in stock is constantly changing. I actually enjoy this aspect because you never know what gem you may find. I always end up finding so many different books that I want and often times for even cheaper than amazon! The plus there also is you get it instantly and don't have to pay shipping on a $2 book. This time around while shopping I walked out with two new to me books and a brand new 300 drawing prompt sketch book for under $10. I'm super excited to get to reading and doing some daily drawing! read more

As far as Half Price Books are concerned, this one is just like any other one. However, the service here is good and I've never run into someone that didn't try to help when I had a question. I have to be careful when I come into this store.... I always walk out with much more than I "needed" to buy. The atmosphere is very nice and although they could have a few more chairs and/or sofas, there are enough seating places available throughout the store. Although this store is pretty big it doesn't have that "big box" feel. read more

The vinyl selection saddens me and is over priced (seriously, no New Arrivals section?), plus there are very minimal vintage games available. I loooove me some HPB! Great selection of just about everything you can read or play with. Fun atmosphere and knowledgable employees. My only faults are the lower than expected buy prices but I do overlook this because they will take it all and they give a lot of books to kids and charities. The only real gripe is that there is not a computerized inventory. It'd be nice to look it up online and go pick it up. I will say the employees are knowledgable and will help you look but I'm the type that feels I should not bother them so they can help someone who really needs it and not me. My bf and I wee asked to leave the store because they had video footage of someone that looked like us (interracial couple) do something wrong from the previous week. We have not visited the store in several months therefore definitely was not us! Was given no real explanation as to the occurrence. I will admit that I may not be the most cultured or enjoy reading like other may, but I have to say these stores are incredible. The whole business model of bringing in old books and getting either store credit or cash is great. I enjoyed picking up some business books and checking out new genres I wouldn't normally read. First off, I don't buy books. Who reads anyway? I LOVE Half Priced Books for their used movie/dvd selection. Front and foremost, this location has a far superior used Dvd selection when compared to Louisvilles S. Hurstbourne Pkwy location. Not to mention their prices are substantially lower. On top of that, they stay loaded with discount movies priced at just $1.00! In general, Half Price Books carries much more than just books... so don't let their name keep you away. But BE WARNED!!! This place is way far outside what I consider to be "actual Louisville"; however, they have a 20% off vinyl records night every Friday night that I can occasionally be made to attend. If you sign up via their corporate website you can also get coupons and deals (that cannot be added to the 20% deal but the offers you'll receive will make it easier to drop in on alternate nights). According to the site blurb about the vinyl event (which includes playing records in the bookstore), this offer doesn't apply to the Hurstbourne Lane shop). read more

Best location to go to! For some reason the prices are a lot better than the hurstbourne location! It is also much more organized!
