I was especially impressed by the staff picks - y'all got some good taste! We spent over an hour here browsing, and I picked up records by 100 gecs, Troye Sivan, and Mitski, while my cousin got a record by The Smiths. The people at this shop are very helpful, willing to talk to people at their other place or give names of other stores that may have what you want. They sell record players, not old-fashioned ones but all-in-one types, and they are good enough. They also sell old and new vinyl and though I don't know firsthand, apparently have a great event on record store day. Tremendous record store and arguably Frankfort Avenue's crown jewel. From standard operations to Record Store Day releases, they have it all down to a science and truly place the local community first. When Steely Dan's reunion albums were reissued on vinyl, Guestroom kept their copies allocated for local buyers despite immense demand from online shoppers. I spin those records often and think of Guestroom's generosity every time; I wouldn't have stood a chance at getting them around MSRP otherwise. The variety is off the charts and this is undoubtedly the Kentuckiana hot spot for new releases. In particular, it's a terrific resource for newer R&B and indie releases. They receive an ample flow of trade-ins as well and price used records reasonably. Beyond the vinyl racks, you'll also see a robust variety of new and old CDs, and Guestroom Records merchandise items that run the gamut from mugs to novelty socks. You can spend a lot of time digging here, and it never feels cumbersome thanks to the well-organized layout and mindful upkeep. This is the kind of record store that every city hopes to have. This was a super cool record store located on Frankfort ave across from the silver dollar. I loved the vintage feel to it. Not only do they have an endless of selection of records, they have cassettes and cds as well. The store owner was very friendly and offered help if we needed it. The selections range from popular artists, to Metallica, TLC, etc. I also found it very neat that they had a section for Louisville local musicians as well. This is definitely a place to come and check out some great music and enjoy what music used to be before streaming. read more

Really enjoy popping into this shop for browsing and of course the occasional buy. Occasional because I will say the pricing is a bit on the up side, you can definitely find records cheaper other places. Hence the 4 stars. But the selection here is great, some unknowns and indie bands I had never even heard of. Also the employees are very helpful, I asked for a couple of specific records and the gentlemen at the register looked them up for me no problem. Looking for some additions to my record collection, I walked into Guestroom expecting a small vintage collection at the most. Boy, was I wrong.. For a small shop, this place has a HUGE selection. Categorized by genre, you could honestly find just about any artist. Heck, I even stumbled upon Justin Bieber and the soundtrack to Napoleon Dynamite... The staff member in the shop went above and beyond to help me out. He immediately came over to make sure I was doing alright, and joined me on a scavenger hunt for some good classic rock albums. He fished out AC/DC's Rock or Bust, which instantly made my day. He mentioned to me that about 70% of the store is full of new records, while the rest are used. If you decide to buy a secondhand one here, you can get a lot of them for around 5-10$, some even cheaper. While at the register, he even went out of the way to show me a great online site for buying records (I had told him I buy most of mine online.) I will definitely be back soon. I really appreciate how much help I was given while I was here, and I can't wait to get my hands on more records from Guestroom. read more

I first heard of Guestroom Records when Jack White's Third Man Records sent their Rolling Record Store to make an appearance on their curb. (It's a van that sells TMR specials and merch.) Wow, am I glad to be turned onto this place! Opened only this year, Guestroom Records fills a void left behind by the dearly departed Ear X-tacy. Though several nice little shops have sprung up in Louisville since, Guestroom Records has the vibe the other places are missing. Settled in a cool little neighborhood with street parking, Guestroom offers new and used vinyl as well as CDs and music DVDs in a generous retail space. I visited the day after Black Friday, hoping to find some leftover Record Store Day specials. They not only had exactly what I was looking for, the walls were lined with new releases and specials. I managed to pick up the "Loser Edition" of Soundgarden's "Screaming Life/Fopp" reissue and found a nice Elvis 45 of "Can't Help Falling in Love." It was probably in my best interest I did not have much time to spend in there, because I could've taken up a good hour browsing through all they had to offer. What makes this place truly great is how they present their stock. I'm a stickler for condition, and I appreciate how their used vinyl is in clean, cared-for condition and are tucked in sleeve protectors. The 45s were all in clear plastic sleeves and ORGANIZED, which gives them major props in my book. I will definitely be coming back here and will make sure to give myself plenty more time. I especially enjoy checking out the new arrivals section and listening to some newer stuff on the listening station. I could spend 2 hours just browsing records here. So much fun! I do wish the alphabetical filing was a bit more obvious, with letter place holders to guide you directly to the letter you are looking for. Guestroom Records, located in a cool part of Frankfort Avenue. I think the CD section is too small, although the market for CD's says it's probably too big. But this is a great store with terrific people who love music. In store events are not frequent enough for my taste, but when they do occur, are a real treat. I love Guestroom Records. It is my favorite record shop in Louisville (RIP ear-x-tacy). I think they have a great selection of music from different genres. They also will order anything you want if it is not in stock. Guestroom hosts lots of in-store listening parties and exclusive performances. They also have concert ticket giveaways if you follow them on social media. Street parking is normally available pretty close by so it's easy to get it. Honestly, you don't have an excuse. I was one of those people who dropped a LOT of money at Ear-X-Tacy in high school, college, and afterwards. Its closing left a major void in Louisville's record store scene and in my own life. Guestroom Records comes closest to filling that void, especially when it comes to having a great selection of used records. The staff is friendly and has gone out of their way a few times to help me out. Chief example: I purchased a new record from them, but didn't get around to opening it and listening for about six months. Upon doing so, I was disappointed to discover that it was warped and didn't play correctly. I mentioned this to Guestroom the next time I was in the store and they gladly accepted the record back and gave me a refund, even though it had been months since my purchase. Their selection of new records is excellent and their used selection is constantly cycling in from their sister stores. I've found lots of old progressive rock records here that I never thought I would see in person, and have been pretty satisfied by the playing quality of used records purchased here. As someone who's been around long enough to have seen the peaks and valleys of the local music scene, I can recognize a peak when I see one. It was hard to foresee how briefly the grief of losing Ear X-tacy (first in my immediate neighborhood then for good) would last. We are in so much better shape now. I have a friend who argues that the demise of Ear-X was because they didn't take vinyl seriously enough. Or maybe that resurgence, in which every real record comes with its download coupon, hadn't been firmly established. Or, and this is where Guestroom comes in, maybe Ear-X had scaled too big for it to remain feasible. Guestroom is of a size but not large, and it is closer to 100% vinyl (whereas Ear-X shoved vinyl into a room upstairs). Staff here know records and are friendly about it. Record Store Day here was the most well organized and likely the most well-stocked. I plan to spend more time here as I recently got back into the hi-fi pursuit after some tragic years away (from vinyl). read more

This place was well organized and had a large selection of fantastic vinyl. Every type of genre you could imagine was available and easy to find. There is a wall of new releases on vinyl which included FKA Twigs. There is also a huge selection of vinyl under a few bucks to certain for something great. Not only did they carry new releases, but older music from years ago and music from 20 years ago was available for purchase. The staff was friendly. The area was neat. There were several vinyl's we wanted to purchase but stuck with one. We will be coming back here to shop for our next record. read more

Last time I was in there, they sold me a totally solid condition Godspeed You Black Emperor 2LP for like $10, honoring the more or less "mistaken" price tag on it because, hey, that's what it says. I'm a vinyl (and music in general) junkie. I lived in the Ville for a bit back several years ago when there were only a couple of record shops the biggest of which is now out of business (RIP Ear X-tacy). I was delighted to find a dozen or so active record shops in the Louisville area now thanks to the boom in the hobby/medium. While I found a lot of great records at a competitor of Guestroom Records the afternoon I dropped in, I didn't see much at a price I would be willing to pay here. There are some quality albums to be found, that's for sure. But when I go record shopping I want to see a variety of used, trade-in, rare, and new items competitively priced as well as music and vinyl ephemera, etc. I don't just want rack after rack of crammed in newly pressed shrink-wrapped vinyl most of which is over $40 a pop--I can typically get any new album I want delivered safely to my house (and thus less handled) for less than half that. I know new vinyl isn't cheap--heck, used vinyl is going through the roof as more folks flock to the hobby--but even the "clearance" section at Guestroom consisted of albums "marked down" to often no cheaper than $18. I wish them the best b/c the more record shops the better, it's just that I didn't see a whole lot to compel a purchase for me here. read more

As a jazz collector, the stock was limited to mostly broadly available, over-priced, new releases. I was able to find a couple re-issues that were priced to sell. The staff was friendly and helpful when I asked about their carrying less common inventory. I would recommend the shop, especially for those with alternative/current music tastes. They took the time to chat and even recommended some cool places around town for us to stop by.... Truly made us feel welcome in their shop, as well as Louisville in general. The selection leans heavily towards modern rock and indie... But they do have decent metal section... Jazz and oldies are curated well, but are a little on the small side...
