Great Selection- Many Good DVDs and good selection. Very Clean. BRING YOUR BAG, they charge $1+ for their designer bags. Was even denied a bag after spending $15 and told the cashier I was walking (went next door to Dollar Tree and they were happy to give me a free bag) And their magazine selection was extremely poor compared to the other Half Price Bookstores. Didn't have much as Magazines go and were all priced at $3.95 where all other Half Price Books only charge $1.00 for donated older magazines from a month old to 5 years old. Bought 40+ books here in one visit. At checkout I was told they don't use bags. Okay fine. Then I wheeled my cart toward the door to load the books in my car, but was told the carts can't leave the store. So how do I get the $400 worth of books I just bought onto my car? Had to carry them out armful by armful. If you don't allow bags and you don't allow carts outside, then staff should probably help in some way, rather than laugh and chat as the customer carries armloads of books out the door for 10 minutes. read more

The service here is not considerate of the customers at all and they will make that very clear by treating as if you don't matter. They have tons of books and etc here which makes for a great selection, but meanwhile offered me less than .10 cents for books that they will easily make 50-100 times profit on. The value is awful and anyone is better off buying there books online or at a small business book store. I was basically being robbed and then the staff tried to convince they had a reason to offer me so little for my books which is that they need to profit a lot, they have several copies of books like these and that they aren't valuable while they are selling books with several copies for 8 dollars and more. Always a great selection and I never fail to find something interesting... That said, it is a very poor place to sell your books. I was thinning out some of the books I've accumulated over the years. I had two large boxes that I brought in on a two-wheel cart. I wasn't expecting much - maybe around $20-$30. Ten minutes later, they made me an offer of $3.00 cash or $5.00 store credit! I want to be completely fair with my review. This store is excellent for BUYING books, in particular kids books and games/crafts...I've bought many and always have had a good experience from that end. SELLING here is a joke. DO NOT. Just don't. I brought in a few new books from 2021, bestsellers mind you, and received exactly $2. I mean...they will sell them and get about $30 and that is what they give you. You will be far more satisfied simply putting your books in a Little Free Library instead. I would also like to make a note that the staff that works in the selling section at Golden Gate is rude. One lady in particular...rude. Should not be working with customers, can't make eye contact, speaks slowly and deliberately at you as if to indicate you are of lower intelligence simply because you can't quite comprehend why and how someone can be that unfriendly and appear to hate their job that much. I feel for her as it's probably not that fun, but come on, that is the point of Half Price Books. Where would you get the darn books if you didn't have us bringing them in? You know what? I really like this store. A lot. A fantastic selection of books, magazine, movies and games. All previously used and as the name suggests, at half the cost. Half Price Books is basically a thrift store for the media savvy audience. Each trip is an exciting expedition of sorts. A treasure hunt to find that one hidden gem. I like how each visit is sure to reveal a different find than the previous. I've never purchased music here, although I have noticed they do have a collection of vinyl as well as CD's. The wall of movies vary among VHS, DVD's and even Blu-Rays. As for the books, I've discovered quite a few great finds with the most recent selections varying from a Harvey Pekar graphic novel to the latest Tony Bourdain diatribe to a random Michael Ruhlman novel about a first hand account of the culinary world. It's also important to remember that this store exists solely based on how often customers recycle their stuff. The return isn't great on trades, but it sure beats having your old, ignored junk gather dust at the house. Plus, if they can't resell it, HPB will recycle or donate to a non-profit organization. read more

Thank god there's still a Half Price Books in the area. I loved the Mentor store and was sorry to see it close but I think I like this one even more! It has an amazing assortment of manga and comics. The record selection is well organized and I found Fleetwood Mac's "Rumors" in great condition FOR ONLY 4$. I also got the original Broadway cast recording of "Cabaret" for 8$. Tell me those aren't great finds! They also carry unused turntables way cheaper than retail stores like Barnes and Noble and Target plus they occasionally send out coupons if you sign up for their email list. So...... I think it is fair to say this is a tale of 2 stores. From the merchandise level it is awesome with a great amount of "stuff" to buy.... I always want to walk out with 10 books. The part that is irritating is the selling part. So.... I took in a rubbermaid tote full of books (probably 30-40). There was multiple best sellers, some textbooks, but q good amount were a notable Christian author. I have bought some of these books there (when I can find them) for 10 dollars a book. I had probably 20.... they wanted to give me 6 dollars.... for... the... whole.... tote..... Now I expect them to make money, but seriously? This author never makes it to their clearance area because they are highly sellable.... so I took my books back and probably wont go back for awhile.... read more

This is NOT the store for you or any family member or friend that may have any sort of disability! My disabled brother who is mentally handicapped and visually impaired asked an employee for help finding an item (turned out to be the assistant manager). She was EXTREMELY rude to him and refused to help him. The assistant manager was also rude to my mother who asked for an explanation of why she refused to assist my brother. When I go into a store where they sell video games I expect those games to be authentic and if they are not marked as non- original copy. In my past few visits I've spotted multiple fake or not authentic goods being sold at outrageous prices. This is illegal according to the US government. When I have mentioned/ pointed out that there are fake goods the employee told me okay I don't care. This employee also has been very rude and stood right behind me and invaded my personal space and constantly asking what I was doing as it was clear I was looking up prices on the games and also checking if it was authentic. It was clear she knew the games I was looking at were fake as well as the games being the worst fakes I've ever seen. read more

During my first few visits to this location, I was pleasantly surprised at how well groomed the bookstore was, and how much it looked like a local library. Additionally, I thought it was wonderful that they were willing to make you offers on just about any CDs, DvDs, VHS Tapes, Albums, Cassette Tapes, Books, Records, or Magazines that you no longer want or are looking to sell. However, upon further review, I see that you can get more money and better offers for your items; if you list them to sell on Amazon or Ebay's websites. And oftentimes, you can also purchase items cheaper on these sites. After only being offered $1.25 for my two large bags of books, magazines, DvDs and CDs I said forget it! Bringing items in to sell there isn't even worth my gas money! Furthermore, I was taken aback to see that a large number of the items that they only wanted to give you a grand total of $1.25 for, are heavily marked up and resold on their store shelves. read more

I wish this wasn't so far away from my place and that the drive there wasn't filled with the stop-and-go traffic on Mayfield Road, because I really enjoy going here. The selection is great and they've got a fairly decent selection of newer books too. Seriously, they have SO many books here...if you're looking for something by a well-known author, it's probably here. They also have CD's, older computer games, DVD's (although the prices on DVD's aren't that great), a few video games, calendars, and other goodies. You can find some real bargains in the cheap section if you look hard enough! One thing I really appreciate about their book buyback program is that they'll take *any* book, even textbooks that college bookstores won't buy back. I just took a load of books there and received $15.00; sure, it's not a lot, but keep in mind that most of these were rejected by Case's bookstore. Half Price Books is a decent book and media store. There are always odd ball characters posted up on the stools like some frogs in a bog. They get in the way of browsing the shelves of books. During my last visit an older woman briskly walked past me and almost shoulder checked me. She was sweating profusely on a 40 degree day and headed towards the exit. My guess was that she was in the Romance Novel section and needed a breather. Lakewood Public Library Book Sale is going on this Saturday. If you're looking to buy books, this is a good store. But if you want to sell, this is a complete rip off. We brought in about 30 books to sell and they took all of them only to offer us $1.77. Seriously??? They gave us less than $2 for 30 books, which were all in very good if not excellent condition. They will probably make well over $100 selling these, but this little pathetic amount was all they would give us. This "selling" books to them is a complete scam. You would be better off selling with Amazon or another selling site rather than bringing your books here. read more

I LOVE a good bookstore. In the absence of the main stream booksellers of a few years ago, going to a place where you can immerse yourself in prose, both old and new, is a pleasure. I've loved the Golden Gate location for years, and you can find a variety of media, from audio books, to older (and sometimes newer,) software and music. I am a fan and I think I will be forever. I don't know what it is about this place, but I get a special feeling every time I go in. Sometimes I'll be driving by Golden Gate and I just can't help myself. Even though this store is all the way in the back, I'll make the trip to check out what they have in. They're always getting new stuff and with their prices literally being half off, I always walk out with something for myself and my children. Even just looking around the store is worth it. The employees seem to have the greatest job on earth sifting through the new items they get in stock. The store is clean and really nicely organized. Plus they have more than just books. E-books are great, and libraries are great for saving money, but there really still is something special about holding a book in your hand and owning it. Try it. You won't regret it. read more

Half Price Books is like a maze. A wonderful, reasonably priced, book scented maze. I get lost in it, I lose hours in it, and I only spend a few dollars in the end for a significant addition to my book collection. Who can beat $2 non-fiction or $1 fiction sales? $2-$5 brand new books? Everything else half-priced? Reading lists for school that would cost hundreds of dollars end up being in the double digits or less--perfect. I can never leave a book store without purchasing something, so the dollar rack is a lifesaver for someone without literary self control. I have never been disappointed with this store and always find something new and exciting when I go. The only problem is that I'm sad it took me so long to discover it. This is by far my favorite book store I have encountered in Cleveland purely for the books and the prices. The staff is always super friendly and let me browse in peace which is nice. I always get a nice greeting when I walk in the door, too. This past time I was there, there was an issue with one of the registers and the cashier that rang me up apologized multiple times (I didn't even need one) and seemed to truly feel bad that my service wasn't perfect.
